The first time we ate at Gabe's the food was decent. Stopped by on a Sunday afternoon. We ordered Chili Relenos. They were mushy, bland, no flavor. Mine was chicken. My husbands was supposed to be seafood. There was nothing but mush. Served ice cold. What a disappointment. Long wait for food, even though the place was not busy. This is a good, family run, home cooked restaurant. 1) Do not pass on the Guac. The best I've ever had-even when I've made it myself. The tableside (or within view) lets you see everything that goes in and it's STILL some kind of magic when you get to taste it. 2) Portions are big if you get the platter- so big that after the guac, we usually end up eating half and taking half home. Burritos re-warm up fine. 3) Fish tacos were a disappointment bc fish was minced and we prefer whole. And there wasn't alot of fish filling the tacos. 4) Agree with other posting re: the salsa verde- a very nice alternative to regular red. read more

This is a decent place...went there with my hiking group of 9 people and nearly everyone liked their dishes, with only one exception. The place was very clean and the staff very accommodating. The drinks came quickly, but food was a little slow to arrive. But the excellent chips and salsa kept us going till then. So if you find yourself in Ellenville, want some decent (not necessarily exceptional) Mexican food, then this place will serve you well. Took forever to get our food and we just ordered veggie quesadillas. There were only three other groups at the time. While we waited, we noticed quite a few flies hanging out by the table (we were sitting at a table next to the window). When food finally came, we couldn't eat it because there were about 5-6 flies that just kept circling and landing all over our table. Food definitely wasn't worth being terrorized by flies during our lunch. The servers also saw us swatting flies the entire time and just looked at us and looked away. We tried to flag our waitress down after about 3 minutes with our meal so we could get out of there but she saw and paid no mind. Finally someone just took our plates away and we waited another 20 minutes for our bill. Definitely not coming back here. read more

Gabby' s is just terrific Mexican food with a twist. The Guacamole is the very freshest and delicious. We have been here several times, ordered a selection of dishes and have never been disappointed. Looking forward to the new location...across the street from the old. Pair dinner with a show at Shadowlands Theatre and you've got a winner for sure! read more

Excellent food. Large portions. The prices are not bad especially in regaurds to the previous mentioned items. The owner can be seen here almost on a daily basis working with his staff to make dining here a great experience. read more

I have been to this restaurant multiple times and have never been disappointed. The services good, the food is great and the decor is superb. It is a little pricey for Upstate but it is a gem in a culinary wasteland. I will return! read more

I'm sorry to say, that I was very disappointed in the food. It was so bland no flavor at all. I had a chimichanga and it wasn't crispy . I make better guacamole there was no cilantro, salt, pepper and no lime in it, the woman that makes it looks like she wants to kill someone, she never said a word never smiled. Once again I made the mistake of going back somewhere I didn't enjoy in the first place thinking it couldn't be worse, but it could. Service was ok but they did get the orders wrong twice. The Caesar salad with grilled chicken was a bowl of romaine lettuce chopped and topped with about maybe 4 ounces of dry tasteless grilled chicken and a very small handful of croutons and heavy supermarket bottled dressing. The taco salad was a fried taco bowl filled with chopped iceberg lettuce about 4 ounces of totally unseasoned chopped meat and a 1/4 avocado. The enchiladas verde was only saved by the verde sauce because the chicken was tasteless. A shrimp cocktail was about 8 (hard to call them medium) but we'll give them the benefit of the doubt and call them medium and the side of guacamole was maybe 1/2 a cup. Again being generous. The best thing there was the chips and salsa. Twice burned never again. read more

They took my order on the phone, when I arrived an half hour later they told me to please wait my order was not ready, after waiting another 10 min. they told me that my order was never given to the kitchen. They never even offered anything to make it right I Left very disappointed if you oder over the phone make sure you tell them to be sure your order is placed. read more

I really think best Chicken Fahita I've ever had. Enjoyed a pitcher of frozen margueritas with very good food. I was with my husband and son and they were just as pleased. Nice ambiance and excellent service as well. Will be back! read more

The "new" Gaby's is in a beautiful , rustic open space with a fabulous bar and outdoor seating. The menu offers many options with a Mexican flare in addition to delicious fajitas and burritos. A friendly and attentive staff makes for a very pleasant dining experience. A good choice any day of the week! read more

Love this place! This is our "go to" restaurant in the area for Mexican food. The margaritas are awesome. I most recently had the chimichangas which are served with black beans and rice on the side. The food was excellent and tasted very fresh! Service is very attentive and friendly. They did a wonderful job with this place when they moved from across the street. Gaby's Cafe is hands down the best Mexican restaurant I've been to east of New Mexico.. I've had about half of the things on their menu. and everything I've 'ever tried has been delicious. That is with the exception of the rice and beans. Considering how delicious everything else is that comes out of the kitchen, it is hard to believe that the chef allows this dish to have his name on it. Absolutely no seasonings at all and the beans taste like tin can. This dish is the only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars. To get rice and beans so wrong baffles me. That being thoroughly griped about, my three favorites are the carnitas (pulled pork) tacos, pernil al horno (roast pork), and bistec a la Mexicana (Mexican style steak). They have a long list of available tequilas featuring a display that marinates fresh pineapple in tequila dangerously easy to drink. read more
