There was nothing good about this restaurant. The service was slow. The waitress didn't even ask for my drink order. It seemed like my wife and I were an inconvenience to them. The owner used to work at El Coyote in NYC and the food reminds me of exactly that. Back in the day El Coyote was one of the first Tex Mex places in NY! Recently returning from college in Albuquerque in the early 70's I was delighted to find something remotely like what I experienced in New Mexico, I said remotely! That is exactly what Gaby's is remotely Tex Mex and I feel the same way I did back in the day, it is nice to have a decent place to get my Tex Mex fix 100 miles from NYC when we are in the country. In NYC it ranks average, a lot of sameness among the dishes, nothing really stands out. To be safe I usually get the beef burrito, it's made with grilled flank steak only it ask for ground beef because the steak they use is always tough and full of gristle. I had the chicken burrito recently and it was filling but lacked flavor, I had to ask for hot sauce to spice it up. The quesadilla's are good, (how do you mess up Mexican grilled cheese!). The guacamole is well done and it comes in a small Molcajete and it is as good as I have had anywhere, fresh and they taylor it to your taste. When I was there last I was facing to door and I have to say every 15 seconds hoards of people came in with children in tow, it is definitely a popular place in town, even though there are only 4 decent restaurants to speak of! I can't knock the place it is good, as I said in NYC it would survive but not do nearly as well as they do in Ellenville. The big draw are the drinks, wine and sangria, let's face it what else can you do on a Saturday night in Ellenville! The staff is OK, a little unfriendly and robotic in the way they ask you how your are doing etc, but they are fast to take your order and bring your food. I wouldn't go out of my way to get here, but if you are in town and you want Mexican you wouldn't be disappointed. read more

This is the best restaurant for miles. My husband and I are vegetarians and can't always find vegetarian Mexican food easily, but they have great veg options. Love the fajitas, chimichangas, margaritas, chips and guacamole. The ambiance is nice as well, probably the nicest of any Mexican restaurant I've ever been to - and I'm from NYC. We've eaten here several times and have never seen any flies - that reviewer must have come on an off day. The service is always good and the food usually comes quickly. Gaby's is one of the best restaurants in Ellenville. The quesadillas are amazing (Note: they will come with sour cream on top, so ask that it be on the side if you don't like that.) Great, newly renovated Mexican restaurant in Ellenville, NY. Open every day for lunch and dinner, we enjoy the friendly wait staff and reasonable prices. We ordered a Taco salad( $13 ), with ground beef in a fried tortilla bowl, and black beans on the side! The beans were creamy and delicious. Next time we'll try "Paella del Mar." We were camping locally, made our way into Ellenville and randomly choose Gaby's for lunch; how lucky we were. Everything about our visit was superb. I had the Quesadillas de Rancheras with Grilled Chicken Breast that was lucious and cooked to perfection. My dining-mates chose vegetable tacos, and burritos which by their description were also fantastic. Service, ambience and overall dining experience made our visit to the Catskills very enjoyable. I ate here recently. My review is based on only the 2 items that I ate, the guacamole and the steak tacos. I got the guacamole with medium spice. It was about what you would expect from any decent Mexican restaurant. I would probably give it about 3.5 stars. The tacos were the shining star however, and I would rate them at about 4.5 stars. The tacos had generous amounts of steak, and topped with a good amount of guacamole and salsa. It was also wrapped in soft corn tortillas, giving it more of that authentic flavor. These tacos were great and better than anything I have found in northern NJ. This was a nice surprise find up in a remote part of NY. read more

Great casual Mexican food. The margaritas are great (and we're picky). The burritos are delicious and filling, I can usually bring some home afterward. My office orders lunch from Gaby's at least once per month. We ordered earlier this week and the burgers were way over cooked, the bun was burnt and the cheese was brown and hard. They forgot my burrito and made me go back and get in even though my office was within walking distance. When I went back for the burrito they forgot to give me, I complained about the burgers, the woman said "oh those guys" about the cook. Never apologized or offered to provide better service. When I got back to work, the burrito was not the shredded chicken I was use to getting, it was a cut up, no flavor chicken breast. There's limited places to eat in Ellenville but I don't believe in paying high prices for below average food. read more

Was visiting nearby and pleasantly surprised to find Mexican food of this quality in Ellenville!! On a nice summer evening, all the outside seating was packed... we were one of the first inside tables, but soon after it filled up on Thursday summer night. Very large interior, so didn't feel cramped, and overall ambience is quite pleasant... somewhat Mexican cowboy. Food was overall good.
