I brought my car in after it broke down on the road and set fire. I was told from another mechanic it was the transmission. I brought it here and Tomas was more than helpful to explain about common transmission issues and my options before looking at it. Honestly one of the nicest people at a shop I've met in the Bay Area especially Oakland. After finding the problem and suggesting a rebuild I decided to just get a new car rather then spend on a whole rebuild. Two years ago I took my 1962 Nash Metro to Edgar for a complete diagnostic. It had blown a rod and he had to drive all the way to LA to find a brand new Austin 1500 engine. Subsequently he replaced the carbueator, cooling system,radiator,and more. The restoration ended up costing around $10K but Edgar would cut me some slack when his bills came due. Excellent service and work. We had a work truck inspected by a different mechanic who wanted to replace the transmission and the engine. We took it to ER Transmission and upon inspection and testing they suggested that only the transmission needed to be replaced. They were correct and saved a lot of money. We picked up the truck over a week ago and it drives great. Just last week we had a different vehicle stolen. It was recovered on Friday evening just before ER Transmission was closing. the battery was stolen, the catalytic converter was cut out and the ignition was destroyed. ER Transmission had a towing service they work with tow it to their shop and waiting around on a Friday evening after closing to be sure our truck was secured in their facility for the weekend. ER Transmissions, Edgar Rodrigues cost me $2400 in extra repairs. My 1998 Dodge 2500 had a shudder in overdrive. We took it on a testride together and he confirmed that the tranny needs to be rebuild. A week later I pay $2000 and go on the freeway to check - shudder is still there - so he adds some 'additives' and let me go. Shudder is still there. He pulls the tranny again, inserts a 'new set of valves' ($200) and returns the truck. Shudder is still there. So he takes the tranny out again , changes everything again and the torque converter. Truck shifts fine this time. A week later, I drive to LA and on the way back on the Grapevine the tranny gives out - completely! No forward no backward - nothing. Had to have the truck towed to Bakersfield to a tranny shop there ($400 for the tow). Turns out this guy is also a 'referee' for the local bureau of automotive affairs and diagnoses and checks on issues with other transmission shops. His diagnose: Parts have been installed in the wrong manner/ direction within the tranny. So he rebuilds it again and now it had been working flawlessly for a number of years and miles. ($400 for rental truck and return train to Bakersfield) After the Oakland bureau of automotive affairs talks to ER transmissions, I confront Edgar with the findings of the Bakersfield shop and he promises to send me a check for the entire amount. I receive a check 2 weeks later but it bounces. By now he moved the business to San Leandro. So I drive by to talk to him and he tells me stories about his accountant screwing stuff up etc.pp. So he is not moving. So I move on to Small Claims court, get a date and he does not show up. With the 'title' of the smalls claims court verdict in my hand I try again to get my money from him - he does not react. Eventually, I gave up....... Now ER Transmissions is back in Oakland, near his old shop's address and I have to warn everybody to use him and his services. You have been warned! He does not know his trade and when he screws up, he runs!!!! read more

I had a very disappointing experience with Edgar and ER Transmissions. I got a full transmission rebuild on my van. However over the next few days I noticed that the transmission had the exact same problems as before. It became very clear that either NO WORK, or incredibly SHODDY WORK had been done on the transmission. Unfortunately, getting the rebuild was the last thing I did before moving away from San Francisco - and so I could not return to have it fixed or confront him in person for some time. We did talk on the phone and he promised to fix it when I could return. It was my only choice, and so I had to live with a car that had practically no reverse and that constantly slipped while in drive. I had a warranty for 1 year or 12,000 miles. I returned within the year and he refused to fix or look at it unless I paid for a whole new transmission. He said since it was over 12,000 miles he was not responsible for it. I reminded him of the fact that it was never fixed to begin with, but he wouldn't budge. I felt very taken advantage of and super disappointed that he took no responsibility for his work and didn't try to make things better. I have a real suspicion that he did NO work on it to begin with. I wouldn't risk coming here if I were you. read more

As has been said before These guys are crooks I paid 3k for a new transmission Truck was slipping and I took it back a week later they agreed it was broken and poorly done and needed to be rebuilt again They then took my truck back to redo. It sat in a parking lot for 2 months because they were in the process of moving the shop. They told me to take the truck back they needed more time before they could fix it Asked me to live with it for now. They never contacted me again. I tried to live with it until it got really bad. Finally I took it back when it was too broken to use and they said they switched management and won't fix it unless I pay full price again..... They just responded it was 5 years ago and I don't have receipt. I do have my record of payment, and when they asked to fix it later they didn't even meet me in person just promised they would fix it whenever I needed it in the future. Clearly I should have forced them to do it right away and not believed what they verbally promised. read more

I went to ER because my car had only been shifting in 2 gears for months. I had put off the repair because I figured it would be thousands of dollars for a new transmission and the car isn't worth all that much. I was basically ready to completely scrap the thing. I finally went in for a free estimate. Edgar said that it would be between $300 and $1500 dollars. So here's what happens next: 1:00 pm - Drop off car. 2:15 pm - Get a call from Edgar saying that he'll have to investigate further for an accurate estimate. I tell him to go ahead if the repair is cheap. 2:30 Go to a bar to steel myself for bad news. 8:38 am (next morning) - Get a call from Edgar. Car is repaired. Charge is $375 dollars. He informs me I can come and pick it up. I am pretty sure that I am dreaming. I went and picked up my car. He gave me the parts that he took out. I think it even smelled better when I picked it up. You've got to be kidding me. Any other shop can suck Edgar's sack. The only thing about this shop is YOU HAVE TO CALL BEFORE YOU GO DOWN THERE. Being a woman, I am very aware that some mechanics will take advantage of my gender when fixing a car. So when the alternator went out on my 2001 Ford Explorer, I called several auto shops first to get an estimate to figure out how much it would cost. As expected, the Ford dealership was very expensive and some auto shops were just as expensive or on the other spectrum very low. I stayed away from the low estimates because typically that is to lure the customer in and then the final bill is a lot higher. When I called ER Transmissions, the esitmate was in the middle. Since the shop was fairly closed to my house, I decided to go with them and I'm glad I did. The owner, Edgar, greeted me right away and explained to me what was going to be done. I decided to go to the near by Starbucks to wait and work. I eventually returned to the shop and he told me the results of the diagnostic test and that a part will be needed. I decided to go home and take a cab. However, I didn't have cash on me and Edgar offered to loan me the money which was appreciated. When I arrived the next day, I found out the wrong part was delivered so it wasn't until the next day until I could get my car back. Edgar immediately offered to take me home and pick me up when the car was done. By the end of the day, I had my car fixed and for just a little above what was quoted to me over the phone (I needed a timing belt as well). My car is running wonderful. Overall, I recommend ER Transmissions for their great work. But as a woman I highly recommend this shop for the honesty and will be my go to place whenever I need car work done. I brought my catering truck to Edgar from ER to have my transmission looked at Monday morning. He opened up the oil pan and noticed a lot of black residue at the bottom which indicates that there have been some heavy wear and tear on the transmission. This seems plausible since it was not going into gear and was producing heavy black smoke on the ride over the mountains recently. He said that it was pointless to just get a normal oil change since there may be major damage so he recommended that I get a complete rebuild of the transmission which would cost $1500. He noticed that getting the work on time is critical for me so he promised to get the job done within 2 days and would stay late Tuesday evening if he has to. A typical transmission rebuild takes about 3 days. Monday: I dropped by the shop a few times to check up on the status and was worried that he could not get it done on time. Tuesday at 6pm (when the shop closes), one of his mechanic is still working under the truck. Tuesday at 8 pm, his mechanic is still under the truck - a good sign that they didn't abandon ship and left for the night. Tuesday at 11pm, Edgar and 2 of his other mechanics are drenched in oil and sweat finishing off on the installation of the rebuilt transmission. I took it for a test ride with Edgar and everything seems to be working great so far. He gave me the final bill which came out to be about the $1500 that he quoted me with no surprises. Overall, I am very pleased with Edgar getting the work done on time and as promised. He definitely went out of his ways to make it happen. That night, the "ER" in ER transmission meant more like "Emergency Response" than Edgar Rodriguez and he sure pulled this one off in the nick of time. You can tell that the shop is associated with XYZ Motors near the Mercedes dealership on Broadway. They're great too. Excellent customer service as both places. I will update the situation in the office, though. There is no wifi or free coffee pod coffees in the office as previously stated in a review. Starbucks and the Korean grocery stores are a walk away and would be a great way to bide your time while they prep your car and finish the work. Great pricing and felt like it was all on the up and up. read more

A transmission problem with my Jeep was fixed by Edgar at ER Transmissions today and I am really happy with the way he explained what they did, and their very fair price. I was in the Bay Area for the weekend, but something happened to my car and it would not shift from first gear. I took it in to ER Transmissions on the following Monday morning. Edgar said they were busy, but could look at it for me. It took a bit longer than they originally expected, but I could see that they had cars up on all of the hoists with parts missing, so I think I was lucky they made time for me at all. Edgar showed me the damaged part, then offered a cheaper second hand replacement (I was thrilled at this offer, as it was only a basic electrical sensor, and it would have taken time for a new part to be delivered). We were told that the jerking & acceleration that we were experiencing on our transmission on our 2002 Chrysler Sebring. The mechanic we usually go to said it would be about $3,000.00 and up to correct the problem. I immediately went on Yelp and saw the '5 Stars' next to ER Transmissions, read the reviews about Edgar, and how cool he was and how he'd saved people from spending thousands of dollars that weren't necessary. We immediately made an appointment, Edgar kept the car, and said he'd found the problem, and my husband picked up the car. The cost was $550.00 for him looking at it, changing some parts/sensors in the transmission and, taking the car for a test drive. Unfortunately, when he was driving back to Oakland from Concord, the car started doing the same thing again. He called Edgar, was told to bring it back, but my husband told Edgar that the problem started on the freeways, after about 25 minutes-when the car was heated up. He then drove the car for 25 minutes before bringing it in for Edgar to look at. Edgar immediately took the Sebring out, and the jerking and acceleration started for him, so he could see exactly what was going on... He then said "I don't think it's the transmission, it's a module". He kept the car for a few days, on a 'scope' and sure enough, it WAS a module, NOT the transmission. He replaced the module, and when my husband went in to get the car, he asked Edgar: "How much do I owe you ?" and Edgar said: "Nothing".. A year ago my 07 mini cooper developed a small leak . After seeing that it was the transmission I brought the car to ER transmission. Edger said it might be fixable with a dab of sealant . This cost $80 and seemed worth a try , after all the car ran fine just a little leak. when i picked the car up it wasn't fixed in fact it was much worse . like picking at something now its weeping and I dint think its drivable like this . Edger says he has seen this before and the front seal needs replacement, it will now be $13.000 . I explain I'm out of work and I am wondering if there is any room in his estimate for a break . He says yes $100 dollars off . But that his shop is full and I need to reschedule . (This helps me too as i have to come up with 1200 dollars ) Three weeks latter I'm not liking taking the bus everywhere and am glad to get my mini in the shop . Edger says it will be 10 days to 2 weeks depending on parts . when the car was done I went with my $1200 to pick it up and edger says the transmission is in bad shape and I will have to "Take it easy" ? after over $1200 I'm supposed to leave with a now wounded transmission ? I thought will see if it works fine if it doesn't I'm not going to let that go for that much money. Oh and he didn't give me paper work up until now we have agreed with no paper work . I should have insisted after he said his copiers was down but I come from trusting people I suppose . So i leave with the car again this time it leaks worse and doesn't feel right . So I turned around went back and all the time wondered if they even test drove it before they called me . Edger says his shop is full now and i have to come back latter that afternoon. I ask him is it going to be OK to drive away with it feeling like this? He says it will be fine to take it easy and He will have my paper work also when i return. The car drove for two more miles then quit . I walk back to the shop Edger says he will have a wrecker go get my car and try to fix . My friends are telling me now to get away from this shop ,But I cant they owe me service that i cant afford to pay someone else to do now. when I call him back i get the word Edger says it my fault the trans was waisted from the git go and the new price is $4.200 . But he does say that I can make payments if need be after all "we know one another by now" . (I feel screwed ) But say go ahead and left without paper work sorta in shock . I wait through Aug, I wait through Sept . and then I start calling a couple of times a week I paid down all but the last 1300 worried that i would have a problem with cash and I didn't want anything to fall back on me .. In Nov. I call and let loose I tell him I have been taken unfair advantage of. How could it take this long ? He blames says the parts supplier .Dec more phone more excuses in Jan . He says 10 more days . After 10 days I call The Burro of automotive repair . I explain what has happened thus far and they tell me that Its my word against his for everything that has happened without paperwork , But that it is itself against the law . He calls ER transmission . Edger says he was trying to do me a favor ? and that it will ready in 10 days if i have the last $1.300 owed . ( that was never an issue BTW ) then Edger tries to chastise me for calling the authorities on him. So a deal was struck in 10 days I will pick up my running Mini with a six month warranty and all my paper work .Ten days latter The man from the automotive repair agency looks at the car and says its still broken and maybe I should get someone else to do the repair . Or sue him or both . He also stated that he would be a witness for the case if i decided to go that way. I tell ER to gear up this is going to be ugly er in court Edger blames me , the man from the agency , The parts supply , and says he wants 10 more days . In ten days I get a call from the agency this time they say the car seems to run and I should go by there and see if it is in fact now ready. There no way that he could test drive this car and tell me its ready . It will now downshift it self at high speeds and is a danger to anyone who tries to drive it Its been a year now without a car . I list it in CL and sell it cheap as its still broken . Edger says the part he replaced (The transmission he killed ) has a guarantee but he wants to spend another $140 on a wheel censer so he can do a proper check this does nothing and so he then wants to change the computer for another $200 . I list the car for sale cheap as it has issues now. Oddly enough someone wanted a cheap mini so they took over where I left off . It took a year and I never heard that car work well again . As for as I know ER transmission killed it . . As for as edger I road by his shop on my way home from the grocers while on my bicycle he was standing out side his shop and he looked right at me and said Wheres my money? ...after 4300 dollars spent. We own a homemade hybrid - it's a Toyota pickup truck that the previous owner installed a Volkswagen turbo diesel engine in for fuel efficiency. Most of the time we're amazed that a 28 year old pickup can get 45mpg. When it has problems, I'm reminded that we bought it from a drunken tinkerer who lived in the woods outside of Sebastopol. When the clutch started making bad noises, the first couple repair shops we talked to didn't want anything to do with our vehicle because of the conversion. Edgar wasn't deterred by the Toyota/Volkswagen mashup that was going on under the hood. He rebuilt the manual transmission and it works great. And they do a lot more than just fix transmissions! As some other bizarre issues with the truck came up (such as the weird wiring that made our radiator fan turn on in the middle of the night when it rained, and draining the battery), Edgar quickly diagnosed the problems and fixed them for an extremely reasonable price, usually within 1 business day. My partner and I both rely on our truck for work, and we aren't mechanically inclined with cars. So having a reliable and trustworthy mechanic for our homemade hybrid is invaluable. 100% recommended. read more

I still love my 2001 New Beetle VW. I mean, Old Paint has some dings and 124,000 miles on her, but the car's got heart. So when the VW dealership told me it needed a whole new transmission --$2,200 minimum-- to repair a complex problem with one solenoid--which they apparently didn't know how to fix--it was a dark day. I was in trouble with the worst luck. Both my truck and car was down on the same day with no way to get to work. The truck was suffering from bad smog repairs from another shop and the car had a overheating that another shop just could not fix and blew a head gasket on the way to work. I took first the truck...and then the car. Edgar sprung into action and did his best to get the truck rolling again so I can get to work. He replaced the alternator, fixed the exhaust manifold leak, corrected the ignition and timing settings, made sure there were no more oil leaks, and even fixed the hood cable. The truck was ready the next day. All done for a very reasonable charge. I am pleased, and I really appreciate the work on the truck. Thanks Edgar! He is still working on the car. I had the engine in my Dodge Ram 1500 blow up on me while driving at 2am and needed to find a shop to tow it to. I found XYZ Motors and had it towed there. Due to my financial situation they suggested Edgar at E R Transmission (something of a sister site) because he could work with me on paying for the repairs. He went out of his way to help me take care of everything despite some issues. He held on to my truck for a month in his secure lot while I was out of country, amazing. One day after I picked up my truck the transmission blew ( I know what you might be thinking but wait) I had him rebuild the transmission, and unfortunately due to a specific issue with Chrysler's the transmission fried within a week. I explained what happened and he took full responsibility, replacing the entire transmission a second time free of charge. I don't know anyone that has been to a mechanic and hasn't had problems but Edgar really handled the situation professionally and never made it more of a hassle. I would take my truck back to him for work or repairs because its ran great ever since and he was totally accommodating. read more

The worst service ever. 2 weeks ago, my father was referred to Edgar by our family mechanic. We were told he had the best service. Edgar asked us to bring the car in on a Monday saying he would have the transmission replaced by Wednesday at the latest. Not only did he NOT call to tell us he was keeping the car for a week, he had my father drive to his shop everyday after Wednesday only to be told it wasn't ready & to wait one more day. What a load of crap. After the car is finally given back, come to find out there is ANOTHER problem with the replacement transmission a week later. We took the car back again this past Monday. He said it would be ready today, Tuesday. He called & said he was test driving the car & would call us & tell us when it was ready for pick up at 5pm. An hour and a half went by with no call & no response when we called. Eventually we drive by to find his shop was closed for the day. Terrible terrible service. My car was having transmission problems, so I took it to the local Mercedes dealership. They quoted me $7400 to replace the "unrepairable" transmission. I called a friend of mine who is in the car business, and he gave me Edgars phone number of ER Transmissions. He said that he heard a lot of good things about this place. After a diagnostic test, Edgar explained to me that while replacing the transmission is always better, it was, in fact, repairable. I opted for the repair. 3 days later, I get a call from Edgar saying that that my car was ready for pickup. Total cost? $1500! I saved over $5900 taking my car to ER. I happen to live on the corner of Broadway and 24th and so I wandered in one day after my transmission wore out, expecting the same old shadiness from car repair shops, but alas! I was SO happy to have been met by Edger. He is extremely helpful, extremely trustworthy and gives great deals! In fact all of the people who work there are very nice, friendly, and trustworthy. I got my car back in record time! After my first experience at ER I got into a bad car accident where my axle broke and my tire popped. Again, my car was repaired within a week and is running perfectly now! I don't normally write reviews for anything, nor do I think most of them are particularly trustworthy because who knows where they really come from, but I felt a need to say something about ER. It really is an amazing repair place for any car repair really, but specifically for transmission repairs. I would recommend it to all of my friends and family no doubt and no questions asked! Great knowledgable transmission shop. I took my Odyssey to them after multiple dealer transmission replacements that never would last very long. They rebuilt my transmission with some minor modifications. Nearly three years now without any problems at less than 1/2 the cost of an original manufacturer replacement. read more
