One thing I like about Gala Bakery is the texture and firmness of their sandwiches/bread. Unlike other Vietnamese-style bakeries in the area with bread hard enough to cut the roof of your mouth, the bread at Gala is firm, but soft at the same time - it's hard to really describe, but what I found to be "perfectly pleasant". You can tell it's fairly fresh. I like to get the Banh Mi Thit Nuong (BBQ Pork Sandwich) ($2.50) - there is a English and Viet menu for those who only speak one or the other. Gala is generous with their meat fillings and stuffs your sandwich with cilantro as well as pickled carrots/cabbage. The Cafe Sua Da/Vietnamese iced coffee ($2.50) here is decent - not as strong or rich as other places, some may prefer Gala's due to its sweetness vs. bitter taste that other iced vietnamese coffees have. I also had two triangular pork pate chauds ($1.50 each) and while the first one was great, the second one had a slimy, spoiled pork filling - which sort of turned me off on the whole thing - so the pate chauds here are a hit or miss. Service is friendly and prompt - cash only. There is no indoor/outdoor seating, this is a grab and go sort of place or eat in your car. Parking can be messy at times, so if you want to check this place out, go during non-popular hours like after breakfast/before lunch hours. read more

the 4star is given mostly to Gala's wonderful and creamy iced coffee. one of the best iced coffee i have had anywhere. my other recommendation is their pate chaud. other than that, not much to talk about. this small rectangle location does not have a lot of pastries for a bakery. the sandwiches are really hard french bread. not that many desserts to pick from. but when i'm in town, I am there once a day for their iced coffee. if it wasnt for the coffee, i would give it a 2 star. read more

Im not sure if the square and the triangle are the same type of meat and its variety size or the square is the chicken and the triangle is the pork?? I practically live here. Worship this place and come here religiously. It's THAT good! Their cafe sua da is so rich and sweet. I love the aroma everytime I drink it. I strongly feel like my life without Gala coffee is no life at all. This is a must have!! Since it's kinda out of my way, I usually buy the half gallon and keep it in the fridge. Last me about one week. Worth the whole $18 bucks!! I wish I wasn't addicted to coffee though :-( everywhere I go I have to buy some and freeze it to go with me.. It's not too thick and not too strong like most Vietnamese places have it, that's probably the reason why I like it soo much. It's easy to drink and so delicious! Their mung bean drink is also yummy! Wow I was having such a great day with my yogurt find and now I'm disappointed. Granted, I only came here for the coffee before (which is really really realy greally good) but is this location even the same owner as Gala on Brookhurst? Or is it because I came at 4PM? Dude, bread was TOUGH as a rock, and the chicken was plain ol' shredded chicken. I rummaged through my sandwich to find the green sauce I hear everyone talking about but I found maybe a few dashes of it. It basically blended in with the veggies you couldn't even tell. The carrot and daikon weren't too pickled. It was a bonus I actually got a long slice of cucumber in it. Ham & Cheese Crossiant. I had a bite of my friends and for $2.50 they give you tons of ham but not so much on the cheese. It seemed like they were being stingy on the butter hence making the croissant not as flakey as others. Even donut shops have better flakey croissants. OMG I'm so sad right now. Occasionally when I need a Vietnamese Coffee fix, this is where I get my coffee from. Although I don't get coffee daily, they remember that I take my coffee with extra milk. Their Cafe Sua Da is definitely my favorite! Not a big fan of strong coffee so the way they make it has just the right amount of sweetness. You can also customize (black, black sweetened, less sweet, more sweet, etc) Fortunately for me, I live down the street and it's convenient for me to stop by here on my way to work. Only costs $2.50 for one cup. Be careful if it's your first time drinking it as you WILL feel like you're on some type of speed for the next few hours. Not only will it help you feel awake and refreshed, it also acts as a great laxative! The only other item worth getting there is their green drink. It's called dau xanh (just say green bean drink, they should know). If you've never had it before, the texture might weird you out a little bit but I promise it tastes good! Onto the subject of their sandwiches, I really don't like their sandwiches AT ALL. There's been a few desperate occasions where I got a sandwich with cha and pate and there is literally one thin slice of cha folded in half. Very disappointing. They have the BEST CAFE SUA DA hands down in the OC. I guarantee that you will love it. It's smooth and does not give you a headache unlike Lee's. Their shrimp eggrolls are sooooo yummy. The bread/bagguette is awesome and so crusty and sweet. They use quality ingredients and you can totally tell the difference from other places. They've got really good Cafe Sua Da (Vietnamese Iced Coffee)--sweet and refreshing, yet not too strong. The Green/ Mung Bean drink is also very delicious--it tastes like that green ice cream bar you buy at Vietnamese markets for 75 cents back in the day... The Banh Mi (Vietnamese sandwiches) here are also very good--the bread itself is soft, warm, and tasty. It's nothing like the gum-shredding bread you'll find at Lee's sandwiches. The meat and ingredients they use are fresh and well flavored, although they do skimp on the portions a bit. One time, I asked for extra pickled carrots and radish and the man said "Yeah no problem! Growing up in Little Saigon I have to be picky about my French Vietnamese foods and even more selective about my Vietnamese coffee. This is definitely one of my preferred spots for an aromatic and deep coffee for a reasonable price. Not the absolute best but $ 2.50 for this quality is well worth it! Iced is better than hot here surprisingly. Their Vietnamese baguette sandwiches are one of the rare ones that my food elitist father actually eats, a right balance of meat, veggies and flavors on not too hard nor soggy bread. The chocolate croissants are my choice purchase here. They're rich, decadent and fluffy especially when you get them fresh in the morning. If you can't make it early they will warm any of the pastries you request. The croissants here are near the top of the line in little Saigon, rivaling any authentic French bakery. They certainly beat every American bakery around. Tiramisu here has delicious cream, accurate to the honored and famed dessert even if the actual cake and layers aren't exactly right. Actually it's more like a simple cake version of tiramisu, but the cream is what makes it so good. Fruit tarts and other cakes are alright, overshadowed by the the croissants and large savory pate chaud. Just watch out for their limited parking space and use other streets besides Bolsa to get there. ;) My happy quick lunch: Iced Vietnamese coffee, Pate' Chaud, a croissant for later and maybe if I'm extra peckish, a rich little pudding/flan. A small little Bakery with a small menu filled with much love for their food. The owners were my neighbors in the late 70's. Something baking in that little apartment that set it apart from the rest of the pastries I've tasted. This, the beginning of Gala Bakery. Cafe sua da is spot on. They do it a RIGHT! Came here after hearing all the hype about their coffee from my boss and it is AMAZING! There is something about their coffee that is so different from other Vietnamese coffee that I cannot put my finger on it. Their pate chaud is also one of the best I've ever had. Their egg rolls are always sold out because they're a hot commodity. Everything I've had here is amazing-- I have yet to try their banh mi but my boyfriend says they're pretty decent but it isn't what they're known for.
