Stopped by on Saturday to grab some banh mi, but there was a New Year festival happening that had the whole street blocked off. I parked in front of the store in a spot marked "store customers only," since I was planning to buy banh mi before leaving the city. As soon as I stepped out of my car, the cashier immediately told me "you can't park there", without asking whether I was there for the festival or to make a purchase. I responded that I was there to buy banh mi and if I can't park there then I'll leave, and only then did she say that parking there was fine if I was a customer. The vietnamese coffee is good. It's sweet and creamy. The coffee itself though, has an aftertaste of something that I can't pinpoint, either overroasted beans or dirty filter. But it's all good. Don't sleep on the mungbean drink. It's surprisingly good. It's creamy and sweet and has bits of mungbean. Yum. The color is so green though, it's kinda disturbing, so just don't look at it. We also got chicken pate chaud. It's flaky and the chicken ball is green-oniony-fragrant. Nothing too special but a nice snack for 2 buck. The lady is not very helpful and borderline kinda rude. I like the chicken one , the meat is evenly distributed to the bread . The chicken one is savory yet sweet , really good mixture in the pallet. Will return for more chicken pate chaud. Pork pate chaud - too much bread not enough meat. Cost more than chicken. Chicken pate chaud -perfect. Savory yet sweet. My buddy pointed out a unique quality to this pate chaud. I want to say this place is a hidden gem, but truly it's only physically hidden because it's located in a side ally by the Asian Garden Mall, however judging by the traffic this little bakery gets, it's clearly a local favorite. They are famous for their pate chaud and rightfully so. The outside is lightly crispy and flaky and the filling is moist and bursting with flavor. Personally I like the chicken flavor more, but the pork is really good as well, I'd highly recommend grabbing at least 3 per person because that has been the magic portion for us. Their Vietnamese coffee is definitely worth a mention as well, it's not quite the traditional French drip with condensed milk flavor - seems like they add a hint of hazelnut (similar to Lee's Sandwich). We usually grab extras to drink over the next few days. On the COVID safety measures front, I think they are doing a great job. The inside of the bakery is closed to patrons; there's a window where you place and pick up your order. The workers all have masks and gloves, there are signs requiring patrons to wear masks and they have a bottle of hand sanitizer on the counter in the window. read more

Service is nothing special but standard in the Little Saigon central area (which people who aren't used to it may call "rude service"). It's a true family-run business, as I usually see the same few faces of relatives cycling at the front counter. My family comes here often to pick up Vietnamese coffee, and it takes just 1-2 minutes to order, pay, and leave. The coffee is nice and strong such that it's perfect when the ice melts, and the drink isn't watered down until a few hours later. I can't vouch for any of the other stuff here, but the Viet coffee itself is some of the best in OC. $4 for one cup in 2023??? My favorite place to get Vietnamese coffee in California is Gala. If it weren't for my dietary restrictions, I would get Gala coffee every weekend. I like that the drinks come straight out of tHe freezer filled with ice and their silky coffee. I swear there is butter in the coffee. The roasted flavor is never overpowered by the condensed milk. Our go-to place for Pate Chaud. What's Good: The Pork Pate Chaud and the Chicken Pate Chaud. Get a couple of each for yourself and maybe a dozen more so you don't have to share. Gala's version is a step above the rest in OC, mostly because of the meat. Super juicy and flavorful. Balances well with the puff pastry, which is layered so crunchy on outside and chewy on the inside. All without being oily. The Chicken Pate Chaud ($1.50) is the typical square shape and smaller than the Pork Pate Chaud ($2.25) which is a larger triangle shape. It's a matter of preference between the two, so can't rate one over the other. They hold well too, so popping it in the oven for day-after breakfast is a good option. Other Notes: parking is limited but turnaround is quick, we've never had a problem. There's 2 location and this is the smaller one next to Dong Phuong Tofu, which we love, so go here mostly. read more

The coffee doesn't have too much ice, has great flavor without being too sweet, has a small bit of bitterness, and pairs super well with their chicken/pork pate chaud. I couldn't decide which one to get so I got both and both were really great. Both super juicy and flakey, honestly one of the better pate chaud I've had. It's cash only of course and the parking situation and the actual location can be confusing but it's not in the plaza on the corner but behind the plaza in a building directly facing the smaller street. My friend and I had gotten the meat pies from Porto's recently, and were feeling a bit let down. He said he was expecting something more buttery and moist, and was disappointed that the pies didn't heat up very well in the microwave. So I thought, "Hey, white guy, have you ever tried a Vietnamese meat pie?" Being the very whitest white guy ever, he unsurprisingly said no, and that's when I had the brilliant idea to use Yelp to find the best pate chauds around. The Yelp reviews led me to this place, and I was so excited when I read that there was ample parking. I would not have to spend time looking for parking while having a fit of hanger - SCORE! When I got to Gala, they had blocked off the entrance to the bakery and set up their register right in front of the door. I was pretty impressed at the clever set up. I placed my order for almost $20 worth of pate chauds - both chicken and pork. When the employee was done ringing me up, I had requested that she split the pate chauds into different bags, and she did so with a helpful attitude. I was very happy with the customer service. The pastry part was very flaky, rich, buttery, and moist, and the meat was nicely seasoned. I prefer pepper in my meat, but this was still nicely done. You get more pastry with the pork ones than the chicken ones, which are about the size of your palm. When I asked my friend what he thought of these meat pies compared to the Cuban style ones from Porto's, he said these were a 10. In fact, he was so happy he ate two chicken ones and a pork one. Omg, I'm so sad to write this review because I love gala. I come here religiously for their coffee and pate cheud, which goes hand in hand in the morning. I've relied on Gala for so long to set my mornings right. Usually it is perfection. I always order a Sua Da Dam (coffee easy on the milk), and the pork pate cheud. It costs a little bit more than the chicken pate cheud, but also is much larger in size. I'm literally about to throw TF up though because I just found 2 pieces of hair wedged in the middle of my pork meat. DISGUSTING. You have to take several bites before you get to the delicious meat filling, which is usually satisfying, but I don't think I will ever come around for the pate cheud again!!! Gala cannot come back from this for me. The coffee is amazing and I will still come here for that. I just pray I won't find something disgusting that will ruin the coffee for me too, for I will be very sad to part with that. So 2 stars just because I still love the coffee. On Saturday morning, it wasn't as new so it was slightly soggy. Still had good flavors. Eggrolls were fresh and he basically gave us whatever they had left because we had gotten so many. If I'm ever near the City of Westminster, Gala Bakery is on my radar for Vietnamese Iced Coffee. Mind you, these days I'm not much of a coffee drinker, let alone tea. Just been cracking down on the caffeine to a bare minimum. But, you always have to make some exceptions and this is one of them. Here's good reading from Steve N's review - "Everyone raves about their Cafe Sua Da. It's good but sweeter than I would like it. The secret to their coffee is the crush ice and they refrigerate it. When you order it, it's serve cold because of the crush ice and it's been sitting in the fridge. Gala's food is pretty solid." So the trick is all in the "Ice Ice Baby" - Vanilla Ice. I do prefer my Cafe Sua Da to be on the sweeter side. If I'm going to splurge, would I really let some additional sugar get in the way? Probably not. For me, this java tastes slightly creamy, while definitely packing a punch for my tastebuds. Coffee never really tastes this good, unless I have it from places like this. I can understand the situation about the parking. Just not enough spaces for the demand, with other businesses nearby. This place is CASH ONLY, but you won't need much of it. At less than 5 bucks for the regular or large drink, you're in and then you're out, with a much better feeling than what you'd get from a local Starbucks. The Pate Chaud here is big, delicious, and cheap! They keep several trays of pate chauds and other pastries warm. A large triangular pate chaud is only $1.50 and it tastes good! The crust is very crispy and has many layers. The pork meat inside is juicy and not as salty as other places make it. The Vietnamese Coffee, as everyone else has mentioned, is pretty good. It's more milky and less bitter than a normal cup of Vietnamese coffee. Vietnamese coffee is supposed to be very strong but Gala makes a nice variation for those who can't handle it. The place looks huge from the outside but it's pretty cramped inside.
