This was one of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had. I am a repeat customer, which made this experience even more shocking. We wanted to cancel our fly fishing trip because of bad weather (rain and snow), and the conditions were not what we had expected for a fishing trip. I called with more than 24 hours' notice, yet the owner insisted on charging a $500 cancellation fee. When I tried to have a respectful conversation and ask if there was any flexibility, especially as a returning customer, the owner became angry, started yelling, and actually told me to "suck it." I have never had a business owner speak to me that way. Having a strict cancellation policy is one thing. Treating customers with complete disrespect is another. The owner's behavior was rude, immature, and completely unprofessional. No customer deserves to be yelled at or insulted for asking a reasonable question. There are plenty of fly fishing outfitters that value their customers and know how to communicate professionally. Based on this experience, I CANNOT recommend this company and will never book with them again. Proceed with caution!! read more

Our group had a wonderful experience- had 12 people - owner did a great job dividing everyone up and selecting guides. We had 6 kids - ranging from 5-12 years old. Ended up pairing 1 kid + 1 adult + 1 guide. The guides were patient and fun with them all. They adjusted the teaching based on skill level and age. Our expectations were low (because fishing is fickle), but everyone had success catching multiple fish - even the littles! Taryn and Jake were my immediate family's guides and they were amazingly knowledgeable about the area / how to fish it, silly with the kids, and easy to talk to. We really appreciated the experience - it was one of our favorite activities during our Big Sky visit. Thanks again! I have been to quite a few fly shops all over the southeast and a few in Colorado. This shop stands out for sure. Fantastic attitudes from employees in the store and the guides coming in too. I didnt get a chance for a guided trip but the clients coming in looked like they had a blast. Prices were very fair and the staff were super helpful. I absolutely recommend them. I would highly recommend Wild Trout for your next fishing trip. There are a lot of guides in the area that have great reviews as well, but you won't go wrong with Wild Trout. We had a group of 6 so we did 2 guides for walk/wade in the Gallatin River. One group of 3 had Mike and our group had Luke. I would highly recommend you request Luke for your trip. He's been fly fishing for 30+ years, and is a great instructor. As first time anglers, we learned a lot from Luke and were able to catch a relatively good amount of fish! He is very knowledgeable and patient. We had such a great time and already are trying to figure out when we can fly fish again. Worth the time and money! There are extra fees but they are clearly stated on the website. It's $20 to rent equipment, a 4% resort fee, $52ish fishing license. read more

Wow...instead of insulting any reviewer that is not 5 stars (and yes you have for every single one on yelp) - maybe take some constructive criticism because no one is perfect, including you. Dropping my 3 stars to 1 because you really shouldn't treat customers horrible. NEVER did you or anyone mention in multiple conversations or e-mails that 4 hours was the same as 2 (if you'd like me to post all our correspondence here I'm happy to do so). IF WE KNEW it would cost the same, we would have 100% stayed an additional 2 hours. If we knew that one person fishes at time (also never told us or listed anywhere on website), we would have ABSOLUTELY stayed an additional two hours -- so glad you are listing it on here so people know in the future. I understand safety ....but the adult in the group who could clearly handle himself in the river was also not invited or allowed too fish. SO this isn't just children --- i guess adults all need to wait their turn too - who knew NOT ME...becuase not mentioned or listed anywhere. The real estate company that recommended you will now also be hearing from me. Next time maybe just say, glad you had fun and sorry it wasn't everything you dreamed about. My review wasnt even bad - but it is now. AGAIN FOLKS- 600 bucks (plus plus) for not even 2 hours of fishing (which time to and from counts as you have to scale someone's personal property to get where you need to go) - 2 snapped lines and obviously horrible customer service by the owner. Brenden was our guide for this half day wade and walk from 730am-12. JD and Brenden provided everything we needed for an enjoyable day fly fishing. I highly recommend Wild Trout Outfitters for your Montana fishing experience. My husband and I recently traveled to Yellowstone and Big Sky. We decided to go fishing in the Gallatin River. We picked Wild Trout Outfitters because the drive from Bozeman wasn't too far and they had the most inclusive pricing. There were other companies that had much higher prices of rentals, but Wild Trout's rental equipment prices were very reasonable. They also helped us know what to wear and sent us a link to get our fishing licenses. When we got out there, our guide Mike started with the basics. We caught a fish on one of our first casts. The shop is only about 15 minutes down the hill from the Big Sky resort. J.D. does full and half days, but after landing 30 fish between 12:30pm and 4:30pm, i think a half day is just right, particularly as it was 20 degrees outside and we were wading in 35 degree water. I brought my own rod and wading boots, but he can provide it all. JD had me on fish on my third cast with his "secret rig" which was devastating. The Gallatin is catch and keep so the fish tend to run on the smaller side (6" - 12"). However, this was a nice 15" cutthroat that hit the rig like a truck. Within an hour, I had the grand slam of cutthroat, brown, rainbow, and white. All 30 fish in the day were released unharmed. A half dozen were good size (12" - 15"), the rest were smaller but nice fish. The shop is well equipped, JD's been around for 20+ years and knows every cut and ripple. I was pleasantly surprised to find that guests can usually land 14+ in an afternoon even in the winter. He can also go most anywhere in a 90 min radius from the shop. I stayed close to Big Sky and fished 3 nice spots within 4 miles. If you want to rip some lips and take a break from the bumps and jumps, give J.D. a call. The best couple hundred bucks you can spend to round out your ski week. read more

I do not typically write reviews but I had for this one. The fishing experience and guide were very nice but we feel like we got totally ripped off. I was under the impression that this 4 hrs experience will cost $395, mind you we had two small kids and this was our first time trying it... so when it was time to pay the bill, the bill went up all the way up to $600. Be aware that the equipment rentals and license cost extra $200. We did not know and the owner did not care to let us know. Left the experience feeling very soar and unhappy. read more

Spent a day on the Madison River with another couple and two guides (Tom and Sam who were both fantastic!) My wife and I were first time fly fishers - Tom was an expert guide who was extremely patient with us through the day. He has tremendous passion for the sport and by the end of he day we caught around 15 trout and whitefish of various sizes. Midday we parked on the side of the river and they set up a mini picnic table and provided a fabulous lunch (so good that I requested and received some recipes!). Not only did we learn, but we learned while drift fishing on the famous Madison River with the absolute BEST fishing guide, Sam Geppert with Wild Trout Outfitters. We met at the shop at 7:30am and didn't get back to the shop till around 7pm. The price was $475, plus the gear rental and much earned tip for Sam. What a deal to get the best guide, learn how to fly-fish and drift down the scenic Madison where we caught so many fish that I actually had to take a break from fishing! Sam is just an all around great and likable guy to be around. He was patient, fun, funny, chill and an excellent fisherman! He knew all the "honey-holes" (aka: best places to catch fish) and got us hooked up with some beautiful trout! We had rented gear from JD, the owner of Wild Trout Outfitters a few years ago. We enjoyed talking with him and playing with his cute dog... so we knew that every time we visit Big Sky, we'd support JD and the fine business he's been running for years! On August 12, 2018, two Texas ladies were absolutely thrilled with our Wild Trout Outfitters fishing trip. Our guide, Joe, was amazing. He was knowledgable, not only about fish and fishing, but also about the history and geology of Montana. He's a wonderful teacher and guide. I give the experience more than 5 stars if possible. My dad taught me to fly fish when I was a kid, but that was decades ago. While on the river my mind was flooded with pleasant memories of fishing with my father. Just like my dad, Joe tied my flies, removed the fish from my hook, and knew just where to cast for a likely bite. I caught 22 and enjoyed every minute. All guides are knowledgeable, friendly, professional and PATIENT. I emphasize patient because I am from California so I don't do much fly fishing. Whether you want to fish the Madison, Gallatin or Yellowstone, Wild Trout Outfitters is your go to fly fishing outfit. My trip on 7-7-17 was with Dave. My sister and I did an all day float on the Madison. On the way to the river, Dave pulled over on Hwy 191 when he spotted an adolescent Cinamon Bear. Dave had seen the bear on his way out to the river the previous day. It was so cool to see the bear forage for roots. We saw pelicans (yes) floating down the river. We saw two eagles and a gaggle of geese. He gave us some information about the area on the way to the boat launch. To top it off, we caught a lot of brown trout, whitefish and rainbow trout. I brought my girlfriend on a guided trip hoping that she would catch a few fish and have a good time. Needless to say my expectations were blown completely out of the water. Sam took us to the Madison river where we caught fish all day long! We were catching so many fish that when we looked at the watch thinking it was about time to break for lunch it was already 2:30 in the afternoon. Ate a delicious lunch prepared by J.D's wife and went back out to continue catching fish all afternoon. J.D. and the guides at Wild Trout Outfitters could not have been more helpful. after our guided trip we tried our hand at fly fishing on our own. We stopped into the shop every morning for advice on where to go and what to use. This was the first time I have ever had a very successful day of trout fishing without a guide. Stopping back in the shop after fishing each day to show off our pictures and exaggerate our stories was almost as much fun as fishing. The atmosphere in the shop and the helpful knowledge of J.D. and the guides made it feel like we had all been long time fishing buddies. Regardless of your skill level these guys will sit and talk fishing all day and make you feel completely welcome. Sam Geppert, our knowledgable and friendly guide pulled out all the stops to make sure we had memories to last a lifetime. When we arrived, we were quickly fitted with premium gear and Sam asked us what we were looking for during our trip. When we let him know we were first timers, he helped us map out our spots in and outside Yellowstone and create a schedule. He spent extra time working with my 13 year old son on his technique which was priceless to me because I know my son will remember his wonderful experience. We took the whole family on a full-day drift boat trip on the Madison River. There were 7 of us, and 4 (one lady and 3 kids 13 and under) had never fished before. Our 4 guides, Matt, Joe, Tom and Nick, were superb with the rookies. The youngest of us (aged 7) caught the most fish, so obviously he was well-schooled. Everyone, including all the rookies, caught fish. The trip went off like clock-work, and we all had a blast. JD runs a tight ship. We totally enjoyed the whole experience, caught fish, had fun and will go again. The girls among us were enthusiastic about returning to Montana and fishing again. Don't have any idea what prompted his abusive demeanor, since he was rude before I even spoke. There are the big box shops and then there is Wild Trout. Where do you go to rent equipment? Where do you go to buy gear? Where do you go for local information? Most importantly, where can you walk in the door in the middle of a winter evening and be welcomed for an hour of conversation and laughs? Wild Trout. As 2 of my traveling companions were without gear, we randomly stopped in and my buddies were styled out by JD with top of the line rod and reel, boots and waders (for a fair price!). The shop is clean, well stocked and inviting. There was a down home feel the moment we walked in the door, and though expertise was clearly evident, there was not a bit of snobbery. I highly recommend Wild Trout for any of your Big Sky fishing needs. Our experience has undoubtedly made our trip a success and I will plan on coming back over the summer for a guided trip on the Gallatin. My friend who has done some fly fishing in the past set up a half day with Wild Trout. This was my first time fly fishing and it could not have been better. JD sent us out with Dave Williamson who was very knowledgeable and friendly. He got us on the fish in a matter of minutes. My friend and I both caught the slam, cutthroat, brown, rainbow, and white. We tried a few different guides/outfitters in Big Sky. We settled on Wild Trout Outfitters as our go-to. I've now been on 5 trips w/ 3 different guides, these guys are great. I sent my Baby Boomer cousins on their first Fly Fishing trip, they caught fish, had a great time and are still raving about it. I've fished on guided trips in Wyoming, Utah and Montana and am really impressed with JD and his team. The best river-side lunch in the industry and guides who are good people and great teachers.
