Same for Xbox and other systems, even handheld. If you're looking for a hard to find old disc game this is your place. They host tournaments as well. Alot of tvs setup for gaming competitions. The staff is knowledgeable, but some are aloof on their phones at times. Great place for some old arcade machines but mostly catering to Japanese style arcade with DDR and other similar machines. I went to this place and bought 3 games, I bought pokemon Y for the 3DS, Wii play, and new super Mario bros Wii, All were overpriced. when I got home I tested all 3 games Mario bros was broken Wii play disc was from the wrong region and worst of all pokemon Y was corrupted the service was terrible, it took them 30 minutes to process a trade in of one game. They open at 11 but were 15 minutes late and it was very dirty I will not be going back and would not recommend this place to anyone, I can't believe I'm saying this but just go to GameStop. read more

I've been looking to get some early 2010s NHL/NBA 2K games so I called this place. I first asked if they sell Xbox 360 games in general since the website didn't have much info on their actual stock, the guy answered "we do". Sounded somewhat disinterested but whatever. The guy who runs this place is awesome. He is extremely friendly and will help you pick out the game you are looking for. Their selection is a mix of gems and standards. They also offer trading cards and other gaming relating items. I am also a big fan of the arcade machines set up for playing and the event space. To quote my tech geek 13 year old (among other things he said) "This is AWESOME"- he is a boy of few words but they are usually to the point. I am not a tech geek, but this place had a lot of stuff that would make any gamer - young or old - sweat. The staff was super friendly and indulged my son's every question and fascination. My son was in search of a PS1 memory card and we found it for $5. The prices are not super cheap but it is on par with what I have seen on-line and at other used gaming places. They also have new games, but still not bargain prices. I agree with Jeremy K. that it could use a cleaning (I also suggest a small sitting area for disinterested girlfriends and patient moms). Been going here since i was a kid, owner is super nice and they have the best selection of imported Japanese arcade cabinets in the area.

It really depends on what you are looking for when you come here. We stopped in to check out the retro game selection. For DS games they had a pretty decent selection, same with Playstation 2/3 games, but the rest was lacking. We did get a good laugh at some of the playstation games were someone redid the covers of some games with ridiculous art and descriptions of the game. There were some arcade games, not a ton and we couldn't figure out how/where to get tokens. There were also several broken games. We were a bit surprised when we saw a much larger retro game selection when they were at PaxEast convention Expo. So I am not sure if they have more and just don't have them on the floor or what. read more

C'mon guys... 4-5 stars? You've got to get to more retro game stores! I've now been to pretty much every retro game store in this area, (and by area am referring to the greater Boston area... Seekonk and the Time Capsule, you're next!), so I know a little bit about this sort of store. I know what you can expect for prices, for selection, and whether frequenting a place like this is worth your time (and hard earned dollars), especially if you're into collecting those sorts of games or whether you're merely looking to snag 1 or 2 games in hand that day without worrying about Ebay's turn around/shipping times. The major boon I can heap upon this place is it's location as it resides in a rather neat and unique place at the bottom of a stairwell in a small commercial building complex right off the highway. I liked the sort of vibe the place gave as it wasn't a typical kind of storefront, and the arcade machines definitely bumped that uniqueness up a few pegs. Kudo's for that idea! Besides that... I found this place's prices woeful, and that's what this sort of place boils down to I'd say: whether you feel like you can adequately stretch your money for your hobby. I don't bother with newer systems so cannot speak about their prices for those games, and although their selection for the older systems (Playstation 1 and older) was pretty good, their prices were very high. 125$ for a PS1 Suikoden 2... ok on a good Ebay day I can see that... but 25$ for a loose Golden Eye N64 cart?! Umm, no. I saw similar bloated prices for their NES/SNES carts (which were all individually priced fyi). I literally took a look around and walked out. 2 Stars, 1 of which is for having Arcade machines in the store. I would recommend Sudden Impact in Winthrop, or Replay'd in Allston/Brighton over this place in a heartbeat. Or if you're out west, stop by That's Entertainment in Worcester. If you're an active fan of this place, Game Zone in Salem would love your business I'm sure. read more

The owners are nice. They used to be outside attached to the mall and the only way in was to go outside the mall as there was no inside entrance. I'd say the games are a little pricier than other mom and pop joints I have been to, some games are way off. The selection is pretty good, a lot of Xbox 360 and before Cd main stream systems in here. Not a lot of variety on genesis and snes games though. Kind of hard to shop when there are people playing some of the arcade games that are really ear shattering loud. Was trying to talk to a friend about a game but had a hard time over the Japanese girl voice on a machine that wouldnt stop talking and the girl that was playing the game jumping out of control everywhere. Was here on a Friday with some friends by suggestion of my boyfriend. Not too crowded, and since it was nice out, the storefront was totally open. The arcade games are more towards the front, and the have tournament setups for Smash 4, Melee and Street Fighter (?) in the back - rows of long tables with TVs. As far as buying games goes, they have plenty of retro and used games, all fairly priced for what they're worth in my opinion. We were there mainly for the games. You can get a bonus amount of tokens if you get $20 worth, which was plenty to go around for all 7 of us who were there. They have a nice selection of arcade games, with lots of classics like shoot em ups, table hockey, pinball, and crane games. For me personally, the highlight and what sets them apart was the amount of Japanese arcade games they somehow imported (even though they aren't made for use outside Japan). They have DDR and the Korean pop version of DDR, both complete with the handlebars that you get with the dance pad in arcades. They also had other Japanese rhythm games that I had never heard of that were fun with single or multiplayer. I will definitely be back here! read more

this is now what game universe once was, long story short, universe went chapter 11 and underground was founded by an employee. same inventory, same smell, same nerd factor 5, well 4 in this case. i will say that this place needs a cleaning, fresh start? well its the same location, same everything, but it is dirty and grimey, but it is one of a kind in these parts so listen up underground, clean up your act and yea shall receive thee coveted 5th star! oh, and get some fracking pinball down there already!! read more

Arcade portion - 5 Stars I'm from Dallas, TX and here in the Boston area for a business trip and wanted to take advantage of going to a real arcade. Sadly we haven't had a "real" arcade in Dallas for over 5 years. I'm covering my bases by saying over 5 years since I can't remember 100% accurate dates, but I think it's actually 7 years or more. Dave & Busters and Main Event both suck and cater more to ticket redemption games and the few arcade cabinets they do have worth playing are more often than not in horrible shape. If I wanted to, I could probably rant about the lack of arcades and how crappy the ones we have are for a couple dozen paragraphs but I digress... Except for the DDR machine's screen, every thing was in perfect working order which is a rarity for me. For the Bemani players out there the closest Beatmania IIDX and Pop N Music to Dallas is in Austin (as of today... maybe in the future it won't be the case) which is 3.5 hours away so you're stuck playing at home which is still fun, but it's just not the same. Another highlight of the visit was meeting the players there. I spent more time chatting with the Bemani patrons than playing the actual games, who surprisingly enough knew some of my Bemani friends in Texas and across the US both in real life and online. The arcade commodore is something I've missed quite a bit, being an arcade regular for as many years as I was. They also host fighting game sessions Tuesday and Friday nights (Friday nights are streamed), so that's another plus if you're a fan of the Street Fighter series, Marvel vs. Capcom series, or any other fighting game. ------------------------------------------------ Game section - 2 Stars I'll admit I didn't go here for the retro gaming section, but I did look around to see if there's anything I wanted to add to the collection. They have a pretty decent selection for the size of the shop they have, and it's neat that you actually have to climb down the stairs to the underground area to play/shop. Granted I didn't look at every single game and compare it to every single shop out there, but all had the eBay/niche store effect on pricing. For example : Persona on the Playstation for $74.99 + tax? Yeah.... that's totally a fair price and the going rate for it. read more

If you don't know your stuff, they will swindle you. Sold me a cheap SNES imitation for $50. It still works... usually. Also sold me a "Pokemon Shiny Gold" bootleg copy (illegal) without warning. Occasionally, sketchy people spend time there. Would return, but with caution. EDIT (5/19/14): Some employee threatened to sue me for slander or something for this review... I guess they're not a big fan of the truth. But listen, I recently returned, and they seem like the business they do is legit. I just have one thing to add: If a customer is standing in front of the register with an item, go to the register and take their money in exchange for the item. That's called "selling" something. Don't just give the customer a blank look, there are like three of you in the booth, I know one of you can get off your butt to make a sale. read more

Fat G. coming back from a long hiatus. Winter is unmerciful. A friend of mine was able to hitch me a ride to check out this place that supposedly was a haven for gamers. Game Underground on Rt. 9 - could it be that answer? It's located at a strip mall around a high traffic area on one side, and a residential area on the other. One first enters Game Underground by, not surprisingly, going underground. A set of stairs lead you to the store. There are a couple of shelves with all types of video games. A small list of what they offer: Xbox and 360 PS1, PS2 and PS3 Wii/DS/Gamecube SNES/Nintendo Genesis PSP Basically it's the offerings of Gamestop with a slightly larger library. They sell old game systems as well. I spent some time looking at their inventory. Some of the games I was looking for weren't there, but they had the popular ones. There are also arcade machines. Some are old school, while some are imports from Japan. They also have a couple of screens and TVs for playing video games there as well. They seem to cater to the casual gamer, and the place is pretty chill. No high pressure sales tactics to buy something or get out. They also host events throughout the week, ranging from game nights, to an all day arcade binge. It's kind of out of the way from Boston, but if you're looking for a place to hang out, enjoy some games, this is a place to go. read more

This is a store that grows on you big-time with repeated visits. I'm an old-school Dreamcast gamer and it's getting harder and harder to find games for that particular system. They have DC games at Game Zone in Salem near me but they tend to hard-line on all of their merchandise/pricing which is EXTREMELY high to begin with. Pricing is on-par and generally very fair at Game Underground, comparable to the lower end of Amazon and eBay pricing Selection at the store is hit-or-miss but that's the plight of any classic console forager. The bottom line for me is that the owners are great and love to chat about gaming, will make a fair offer to you whether you're buying or selling, and make it a fun experience instead of one where you just feel like you wasted your money. If anything doesn't work 100% correctly, you can return the items, and they'll also clean/resurface games too. If the game you desire is not in stock at the store, they'll put you on a priority list so that when the game comes in, they'll call you to let you know. I'd say it's best not to go in there looking for a specific game, per se, just see what's there at that particular time. Also, there are some awesome arcade machines there to play too (mostly of the music and rhythm game genre) but i've never tried them myself...yet. read more

You got to love store that the employees have a real passion for the industry that they work in. I braved rt. 9 traffic to check out the used games systems that they had here after my old xbox red ringed like champ. It turned out they didn't have a used xbox with the HDMI port what I was looking for, but they tried really hard to make it happen. Even going around to the store to check the systems they have set up for league play. In the end they gave me some solid advice on why to get a new system with out trying any pressure for me to get it here. Its a fun place with a ton of throwback game stuff, in case you need to replace your Dreamcast's scratched Power Stone game. read more

I've been going to games underground for like 10 years. Since they were in Framingham, literally underground. I hate that they moved.

"Don't you want to go where everybody knows your name? And they're always glad you came."? And you can play any game you can think of to play. Or watch someone beat the heck out of DDR? Or just hang out and talk? Or talk to someone who actually owns Mother 3? In Japanese? Wouldn't you rather play your games or talk about the world of gaming at a place where the staff actually know the plotlines of games, and how they get written and even know some of the sci-fi writers whose works are being referenced? Or feel like you're not a weirdo-geek who cares passionately about Persona 4 Arena? Or if you are aforementioned weirdo-geek, well, everyone else there is too. The genius of Game Underground isn't in its shelves full of games, or in the widescreens and XBOX, Wii gaming area. It isn't even in the staff's knowledge of obscure games and how to find and play them. The genius of Game Underground is Jamie and Alana and Paige. It's Sean and Ryan and Kirsten. It's a hangout, a neighborhood, a family. Game Underground is home for gamers. What can be better than that? read more

Kind of a weak experience overall. The game selection is OK, but not great (I saw Mega Man 5 which is cool because it's relatively rare, but no Mega Man 2 or 3? Come on man). Furthermore, I feel like the venue is having a bit of an identity crisis. Is it trying to be an arcade? Well, it should have more games and fix the ones that are broken (and remove skeeball as well) and possibly remove the tournament area to add more cabinets. If it wants to be an eSports venue, it shouldn't call itself an arcade. Don't get me wrong it's not bad by any means, it's just that there are a lot of other more viable options. read more

This has been my favorite game store in the metrowest area. The selection of old school games is excellent. The arcade machines have a good selection of nostalgic games. I especially like the deal where you pay ten dollars to play on their plasma tvs all day. The help is very friendly and knowledgeble. It is occasionally hard to be served when it gets busy. Best store ever! I love skeeball I love being able to rent a tv and play on systems I don't own!!! This store is amazing!!!

Arriving at the store at opening time of 11am on a tuesday i found the place closed. no big problem as i had breakfast nearby and came back at 11:30. At that point the door was unlocked and I walked down the stairs, opening the 2nd door I noticed the shop was completely dark, deserted and some kind of alarm sounding - so I walked back out. Siting in the car someone, presumably the owner, walks out and back in so I finish my phonecall and re-attempt. Again the place was deserted but this time with more lights but with all the games and arcades still switched of. Making some noise I walked around in the shop for about 15 minutes checking their game making sure I would have been seen but nobody arrived ever. After 15 minutes of mindless walking around in the store all on my own I just left, not coming back. read more

i wish i could rate this place higher because i love supporting local businesses and i hate gamestop, but these doods need to check the products they're re-selling. since back when they were game universe, i have purchased a sega genisis, SNES, and xbox (all used) and every single one i have had to return and replaced because something was wrong with them. the AV plug on the genesis was messed up so there was no color, the SNES flat out wouldn't turn on, and what do you know, i just get home from making the trek to framingham to plug in my shiny (dusty) new (used) XBOX1 and play my favorite non-backwards-compatible game (Unreal Championship), but alas, THE OPEN BUTTON DOESN'T @&#*ING WORK!!!!!! i specifically asked the dood, "will this work?" "oh ya we test everything before we re sell is" well clearly you don't, considering a copy of halo 2 is still in the XBOX THAT WON'T OPEN. luckily i can return it and get my money back/ a new xbox, but unfortunately I'll have to go an hour out of my way once again to do so, and i'm also gunna have to be a douchebag and make the store employee test it in front of me. None the less, this place still gets the 3 star rating from me. GEnerally the employees are very friendly and very knowledgable. I believe I've dealt with the owner before and he knows his stuff, and seems just as disappointed as me when i have these problems. I also do realize that these consoles are a thing of the past, and i should expect issues. Plus, where else can you even find these kind of games anymore? Despite my issues, i hate gamestop enough to keep going back to game underground, but I've learned my lesson; make them test every used item in the store before i buy it. read more
