I had been wanting to go to the store for a couple years since it was a small business and I like to support local businesses but I really regret it. I bought two used controllers one of them work one of them was broken I lost the receipt but unlike Gamestop they don't save anything in their computer. Lots of stores nowadays lets you just swipe your card and they can find the transaction and give you your money back this place doesn't even have the technology for that so they wanted to buy back my broken controller for five dollars. That was Their best offer. I hope Gamestop put them out of business I don't know how they can compete when their return policy sucks. You can't even return used to games like you can't a game stop and like I said they can't track your purchases with your account or credit card. read more

I've been here several times, almost always for older games, and I have NEVER been disappointed. The store itself seems a little slow, so the staff is sometimes a little low energy as well, BUT they have always been helpful and ALWAYS been friendly. They always help out on what I'm looking for. Arkham City, Game of the Year edition, for 10 bucks. DONE! Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect 2, 4 bucks. DONE! I kept going back a million times for a copy of Ocarina of Time, which they never seemed to have until they finally did. Really pricey at 45 bucks, but it's a local store, and it's worth the price. They're so much better than GameStop, and all the nostalgia titles for my new Genesis and SNES are going to make this place a much better option. I highly recommend the place read more

Overpriced and a rip off for old school games Came here looking to pick up an old school nes game for a project I was working on, but they marked up the mario bros/duck hunt game way too much, it was $15 which I can understand if the following were true 1) game was in good condition; 2) supply was limited for that game. I'm not much of a hobby collector but I have a general idea that certain games even if old will command a higher price like the gold cartridge Zelda/Link game. But they're charging $15 for a game that they had in abundant supply and in varying conditions from good to bad, all $15 bucks. So obviously the owner is just greedy and shady like those stupid resellers buying up all the NES Classic Minis and reselling at over-inflated prices. He probably does that also. I found the game at other retail shops and ebay for cheaper (around $6-8). Save your money and shop elsewhere. read more

This retro game store is amazing, not to mention it's located in the city of Long Beach (which is one great city)! It sells a variety of games, DVD's, and Blu-ray's, and they also sell anime on DVD (and Blu-ray) as well as games that were released only in different countries (like Japan and Europe for instance) but never in the U.S.! Would definitely love to come back to this retro game store again, which is why I had to get a business card for it! Highly recommend it! Walked in, got a nice hello from the worker and a "let me know if you have any questions." Found 3 NES and 2 SNES games I need for my collection and asked the prices. Each quoted was 2.5-4 times more than it would be if bought online. I understand the extra costs related to running a brick and mortar store, but that markup was astounding. I'd recommend, if you're going to charge such high prices, you'd better find workers who will actually engage in conversation and show interest in your customers. "What kind of games are you looking for?" "Are you browsing for your own collection or for a gift?" "What games have you been playing lately?" Etc etc would be far better ways to engage. Once upon a time I enjoyed playing video games a great deal. But then I got old and video games got all new-fangled and shooty and loud. In any case I still proudly hang on to my SNES and my N64 and am so happy to see that Game Play has a phenomenal selection of these old school games. Even better? They'll buy your old ones from you if you're all done. Also, if you have a demon puppy who insists on eating your PS3 controllers - Game Play is a great place to buy a slightly used one for a great price. The only good thing about this store is that they offer a buy 2 get 1 free deal on all used games. That's about it. I went in to look for NES, SNES and N64 games and the variety sucked. The condition of the merchandise is very poor and good god almighty.... were the games pricey!! It was a major disappointment to find out that a retro game store so close to me overcharges on common games. I also took a couple of games to trade.... BIG MISTAKE. I couldn't say no fast enough when they wanted to give me a measly quarter per game. I started to chuckle when he told me, but I then realized he wasn't joking. This place is strictly for people who want a nostalgic feeling by seeing the stuff they played as a kid. Buying them is a whole different story. I would go elsewhere. I try to support the small mom and pops stores and not give my money to big corporations..... but the high prices and crappy trade in value of games reminded me like i was stuck inside a Gameshit. The only reason I drive 20 miles to Game Play is because they sell their games before the release date. As soon as their shipment comes in, they will let you buy it straight out of the shipping box, and this could be as early as one week. You can also pre-order a game for only $1, and they will call you as soon as the game comes in. There is usually a line for the popular games, so pre-ordering is a great way to go to avoid the risk of selling out. You can't pre-order over the phone, but you can still leave your contact information and they will call you, although probably after everyone in the line has already gotten their copy. Definitely the place to go for games, movies, anime, etc. Their prices are far lower than their competitors, at about $56 for a PS3 or 360 game - a full four dollars below MSRP (Take that, Walmart!) And if that wasn't reason enough to make this your one-stop-shop for all your gaming needs, you might be delighted to know that they also typically get games days, and even a full week before the official release date (I had CoD: MW2 a week early.). The staff is also friendly and honest. Most of them are just regular gamers and are more than willing to have a conversation about an upcoming release or their honest opinions of a game/movie. It's sad that local game shops like this are being overrun by huge shops like Gamestop and Best Buy, but if you take the little extra time to visit this shop, I guarantee it'll be worth your while. My bf has been struggling to find a video game store that has a great selection of old/retro games, and I think we have found The One. From the start, the employees were super helpful and nice. You can just tell that it's run by people who love games, for people who love games. We ended up purchasing a few games and a controller for PS2. The prices are very fair, and probably better than GameStop. Even if there is a slight difference, I would much rather come here for the friendlier, less corporate atmosphere. Sure, you might be able to find them cheaper online, but it's great to browse with no particular game in mind and find something cool. Plus, you'll have it ready to play right away! After being extremely satisfied with our first visit, we came back again with a huge box of old PS2 and Wii games to sell, and they gave us a good price for what we had. Not only do they have games, they also sell geeky memorabilia (Funko Pop, lanyards, Link mints) and DVDs. This will definitely be our go-to store if we need anything game related. It easily surpasses every other videogame store I've been to thus far in terms of game selection and customer service. read more

Good little independent game shop. On 06/16/20 got a major title release three days early! They called me and said it was ready for pick up. They only require a one dollar deposit for preorders. They have a solid mix of retro games and new stuff. Staff are friendly. Payment technology is a bit on the older side - their card readers dont accept contactless pay, something crucial since we are in the middle of a plague. But overall pretty nice little shop. A whole lot better than Gamestop and their aggressive staff who push you to subscribe to their crappy magazine. Will come back in a month for Ghosts of Tsushima. read more

This place is a rip off. Bought a super nintendo here but does not work on all games, and obviously has been dropped before I purchased it because the chassis sounds like something broken inside when I picked it up. I kept telling the staff that the same games worked on my retro system while not working on the super nintendo that I bought from them. The staff had no clue what to say except sticking to the games were dirty? That just didn't make sense when the games all work on the retro but not the original. Warranty is useless, I was told that there wasn't any system available? Wow, none of the staff actually wanted to help except one. The asian guy with the mustache himself just defines laziness. I spent $100 here and felt like I was scammed when the system itself does not work, yet they kept on telling me it's the games that had problems. So my boyfriend just bought me an N64 from Frank and Sons (a must see for nerds). I checked on yelp for N64 games and game play was the first place which popped up. It had a great rating so we decided to check it out. They had SOOO MANY GREAT GAMES for many old systems. This is a great place if you want to get back into your delorian for some old games/systems. I am simply amazed. They had some anime shows I've been seeking for forever at a great price. Their employees there maybe young, but they are truthful and very friendly. You can tell they enjoy their jobs. They also have some sweet treats. My only complaint is some of they games they are selling are a bit pricier then what Frank and Sons has them for. Bought a used copy of the first Devil May Cry a while back. They did not have it at this store, but the clerk volunteered to check their Los Angeles store and had it sent to this store within a day and it was half the price the Game Stop across the street was asking for. Came here for a Nintendo NES 72-pin connector replacement. They replaced it but the connector was very tight that it was a pain to remove my game cartridges and the games only played the first day, after that it stopped working. I called them and they went ahead and replaced the connector for a second time, same issue. I asked them if they can order a new connector from a different vendor. They said no. I asked for a refund which they issued and for them to install my old connector back - which they said yes. ********* I updated my review from 3 starts to 5 stars. After my 3rd time returning, they finally did order a new pin connector from a different vendor. And it worked like a charm!!! read more

When you go to GameStop, you're stuck dealing with people who only really know anything about current mainstream games they've seen videos or advertisements for. Beyond that, they know almost nothing even about those games. And they're always looking for a way to get you to spend more money and rip you off on trade-ins. Gameplay however is full of very friendly and knowledgable gamers who know what they're talking about and give you great deals. I've never had a problem when coming here and always enjoy it. I'd easily recommend it over Gamestop any day of the weak. They also do tournaments from time to time with a much better crowd than the gamestop ones. This is the very definition of a gamer's game store. I have been patronizing this store since 2002, and I have never EVER had a bad experience here. All the staff are sincere with their opinions of games,videos, etc. and even though I already know what I want when I go there, they are always up for a quick chat about anything new coming up. Their prices cannot be beat either. Usually a full four to five dollars off regular priced games at other stores (ex: 59.99 full price @ gameplay it's usually 54 to 55.99). Another reviewer also pointed out getting games early. That is usually a local secret but hey if it helps gameplay make business that for sure I got MW2 last year a week early. It was fun being able to play a week before most people. Their selection of used games ranges. You see mostly old sports games, but their are some gems that you find once and awhile, depending on your taste. Games are generally cheaper, and the workers there are really nice. They even have a FB page, in which they offer exclusive discounts. I highly recommend pre-ordering a game here. My first 3 visits were good, all three of the employees were eager to answer any questions. My 4th visit I came in to make another purchase but I also came in for a transaction issue in which I got over charged. James Thomas was working here and helped me through the process. If you're fortunate enough to stop by Gameplay and have James working then I can assure you, you will bring your business here time and time again. His attitude was exceptionally professional, polite and knowledge on the random questions I had were spot on. Ever since I pre-ordered Super Smash Bros 4 on the 3DSm I've kinda just flocked here instead of a Gamestop near my house. It varies day to day whom someone greets me, one strikes up a conversation while another one will keep to himself but is still insightful if I come up to them. They have almost everything I could want, from NES to Wii U/PS4/Xbox 1 but at a price I can't get. I managed to get GTA V $12 less than Gamestop would ever sell it at and also got Kingdom Hearts 2 at a nice $20 price. They've even held two 3DS Smash tournaments, both of which I've had fun but more with the second one as they had a better grip on what to do. I wished however I could get more bang for my trade-ins, giving them 2 3DS games that cost $35+ each, to get about a quarter of that price in store credit towards a game I've pre-ordered. Still, I'd rather be here than Gamestop. I can put down $1 for a pre-order and it gets even better when they get the game to the people who paid off their pre-ordered games early after they've sent out a call. read more

Oh Game Play, I don't know how you drag me 45 minutes away from my local area to come pick up games, but I do. The prices of games regardless of new or used are either standard retail or competitive compared to other retailers. (Competitive prices usually occur when they sell retro gear.) They also offer figurines and joysticks that most retailers won't carry. If you need the latest Hori joystick because you don't like how a Madcatz one feels? Well come here, they have those in stock. They also offer used DVDs, anime/gaming posters and even Japanese snacks. A big plus is that this place will tend to carry newer niche games. So if you were on the fence about a particular title such as many that Atlus provides, you'll probably find it here in stock. The best thing about this place is that I guess they're not required to ask you for preorders or subscriptions to anything, because it's not a huge corporation like GameStop. It feels like a standard mom and pop style place with a few more locations scattered across California. Speaking of preorders, they do take them here and they seem to be on the ball on it even if you don't put money down. Although I ended up picking Xenoblade on official launch date, they still gave me a courtesy call letting me know it came in when I didn't preorder. If you don't like the billions of questions GameStop employees are told to ask you, then Game Play is the place to be. However, the customer service varies. One day, you might get the awesome peppy person always ready to help you. Other times, you might get a condescending hipster who'll look at you as if you know nothing about video games. Interestingly enough, it's across the street from a GameStop, so if you prefer that kind of atmosphere, you can always take your business back. Though, my friends in LB often wonder if I'm really down there for Game Play instead of visiting them...(They aren't wrong usually..) read more
