Fortunately, I thought better of that, and called ASAP. They're true to their name: they could have come out the day I called them. When I asked for a ballpark cost, the man I spoke to told me that the most economical solution for me would be if I bought the motor, and they installed it. And here I was bracing myself for their upcharge on the hardware. Impressive. I scheduled the appointment for the next day and picked up the motor at Home Depot. Alan, the technician, was excellent. He called before coming over, and he was done in about an hour. He also gave me advice on the 25-year-old door, making it clear that he wasn't trying to sell me a door. The charge was $283, which was a little less than I expected (the man on the phone told me it would be $275 plus tax). Highly recommended.

What should have been a simple garage door job turned into a ridiculous number of problems, return visits, and time I had to take away from work. First, they tore down my weather stripping even though they were NOT supposed to touch it. While doing that, they scratched up the aluminum around my garage door. They then had to come back to replace the weather stripping and repair the aluminum they damaged. When they replaced the aluminum, they installed the WRONG COLOR, so I had to schedule ANOTHER appointment for them to come back and fix their mistake. Then the garage door started making noises, came off the track, and almost fell. Yet again, I had to arrange another service call to have them come out and fix it. As if all of that wasn't frustrating enough, they also completely NO-SHOWED for one of my scheduled appointments. I rearranged my schedule and made myself repeatedly available for appointments--all of which were only necessary because of their own mistakes. After all of these issues, I asked for a reasonable adjustment to my bill. Considering the damage they caused, incorrect repairs, repeated service calls, no-show, and the amount of my time that was wasted, I don't think that was an unreasonable request. Instead, I was extremely disappointed with their response and lack of accountability. One mistake is understandable. This wasn't one mistake. It was problem after problem after problem. When you hire and pay a professional company, you shouldn't have to repeatedly take time off work so they can come back and correct damage or mistakes from previous visits. Ken (company owner) answered our call the first time we called, gave us a very reasonable quote for labor, came by our house to measure the garage door the next day and had the door installed the day after he measured! He even picked up the door from Menards and took away our old door for no additional cost. His attention to detail was very impressive and he went to great lengths to explain the nuances of the door, opener, sensors, springs, etc. He seemed to genuinely care about our costumer satisfaction and not just getting the job done. Ken's grandson accompanied him on the job. Not really relevant, but it struck me as cool. I highly recommend going to Menards to get your door and have KB install.
