The retail space is fine, but my advice: DO NOT BOOK AN EVENT HERE! I was quoted a starting price of $5000 for the event space NOT including tables, chairs, or BATHROOMS for my guests to use. Their entire event booking "process" was very poorly executed, bordering deceptive. Consider instead: Ampersand SF that charges $990 base price, amazing customer service, regularly does thoughtfully curated events, and has an honest, straightforward booking process. My experience with Garden Apothecary: The third-party event planners the owner hired to assist me were the most unprofessional, sketchy people of any profession I've ever encountered. I've never left a business a negative review in my life, but I've also never experienced such senseless mistreatment as a prospective customer. I originally emailed the owner in December to book the event space for my wedding reception (I am having a very casual wedding, more of an "elopement" or "microwedding" with 25 guests) in June. We requested the space to hold a basic dinner party and the consent to decorate (really, just set the table) ourselves with tableware we'd gladly provide. Again, all very casual, no crazy or rigid expectations. There was touch-and-go communication but she told me she experienced two difficult life circumstances back to back. I am also going through some very difficult personal/family circumstances. I was understanding, I was patient; I had no reason not to be, I trusted her. Ultimately, she told me she'd be enlisting the help of friends who are wedding coordinators. But these wedding "coordinators" have no website and virtually no information about their business available online besides an Instagram page that reads as personal. All of that would've been fine, but without a breakdown of price or full understanding of what we did/did not need we were told the "venue and coordination 'package'" starts at $5000. The very obviously hastily put together welcome letter from the coordinators (now suddenly calling themselves "Garden Apothecary Boutique Events"), with its first typo in the second sentence, only serves to breakdown two real offers: A. Use of the plant store that has plants and B. The "coordinators" are two warm bodies capable of hypothetically, maybe doing the things (which things? who can say?) you might need maybe...who knows? I was open and tried my best to understand, justify, the $5000 starting price. Clarifying the inflated language made me feel the most intense secondhand embarrassment. "What decor is offered?" "Uh...the plants at the plant shop." "What floral installations are included?" "Uh...the plants at the plant shop." I also had to clarify what was excluded and considered my responsibility; the bathroom issue was the real kicker. The welcome letter said, in plain English, "[Restroom] rental referral list available upon request" which was a flat-out LIE! When you request it, not only is it not available, it doesn't exist! They then, for a moment, with this one specific issue where they most obviously went about it the wrong way, lead with truth- this is all new for them. I would've loved to be forgiving and understanding but $5000 is not an "I'm new at this. Please be understanding (as I blatantly lie)." price point! I had no choice but to tell them as kindly as I could "If we're going to work together can you please cut the bull****?" and (appropriately, all things considered) they cut themselves out entirely. Their "offer" was off the table (the table that I would've had to provide myself, not included in the $5000 starting price). The owner's curt, passive-aggressive, and flippant response when I brought the fact that her friends are lying to her customers to her attention tells me she co-signs this behavior; she's fine with her business being represented so poorly. I find that shameful. The other vendors we were interested in hiring (baker, florist, etc.) in the Half Moon Bay community, a few of whom are very familiar with and otherwise fond of Garden Apothecary, are appalled at what they're charging. We asked for a space with a long table to set ourselves and were instead offered a "Bridal Party Concierge" (whose specific duties are, direct quote, "hard to be specific about"). A mandatory upsell through slick talk, a nothing-burger repackaged only with boujie adjectives from disreputable, unreliable, dishonest people is never worth a minimum of $5000. Outrageous considering that price point is comparable to the nearby luxury venues actually in the wedding industry. The worst part, the senseless and hurtful part, is I did not want a luxury venue, I didn't request a luxury venue, I didn't give any indication it'd be necessary to hastily and sloppily rebrand Garden Apothecary as a luxury wedding venue. I wanted very much to celebrate one of the most important and memorable days of my life at a quaint little local plant shop. I'll never understand why they chose to go about things this way. read more

What a lovey space. Their corner of HMB Main Street has had a lot of iteration but this is my favorite thus far. The space outside is inviting and full of healthy plants and herbs for a local garden. Then the inside space is clean and open and airy with lots of treasures. I hope they bring in even more fun items before the holidays to expand their selection. We ended up getting a few small items and a gorgeous, huge bouquet of lovely flowers that made our day and were very reasonably priced. read more

If there was a single word to describe Garden Apothecary it would be delightful. In trying to find the words to embody the feeling that this store is I find them fleeting, and yet somehow embodying what a garden can make you feel - grounded in the floating. Everything about the place is pleasant, from the colors to the sweet little finds, and even more so the interactions with the people. My memories of actually being here include a day when my car broke down in the pouring rain, in which everyone I encountered in the rest of town refused to help me. It was here I charged my phone to finally get rescued (nobody else let me), and more so how it was hear that the attitude was full of kindness and care. It is a pleasant memory in a very all around rotten day. When my Garden Apothecary fix is too far out of reach, I can read the emails from Jenn. They are such an authentic collection of tips beyond the garden and into care of self/environment. I love it when I walk into a store and it looks like I walked into someone's rustic cottage in the countryside. Garden Apothecary is a charming little store on Main Street that sells soaps, bath salts, and lotions on one side, and herbs, tillandsia air plants, and other home & garden items on the other side. They actually had their grand opening just this past Friday. The store smells really good (kind of like a spa) because of the blocks of french soaps that they sell here. This is a great place to pick up gifts (for others or for yourself!). I saw some one-time mud mask packs where you just add water - that would make a great addition to a gift bag for a party or bridal shower. There was also a chalkboard tablet which I thought would make a cute gift as well. This is a small gardening centric shop that also has a retail goods section located right on main street in downtown half moon bay. Parking is street only, but usually there is a spot available if not right in front then somewhere on main st. or one of the side streets close by. This is logically and physically divided into two sections, a nursery/gardening part which is the larger of the two and outdoor, and smaller super awesome indoor retail section which carries a good selection of botany inspired products-skin care, dietary supplements, scents and whatnot. The nursery side of things is prefect if you are needing to jump start up a herbal garden. The staff are more then usually knowledgeable about the care, feeding, environmental needs and other fiddly details involved in getting a healthy garden plot up and running. The retail section has a good selection of plant based skin/health care stuff, and a lesser selection of kitchen/home decorating stuff, also plant based. That is to say, non synthetic-wooden spoons instead of metal or silicone. They also have some of the usual small touristy items that everyplace in a beach town is expected to have-cards, stationary, small decorated shells etc. The skincare items are extraordinarily well made especially the lotions and soaps. The stock of dietary items-edible oils, extract pills-is not the largest, but what they do have is also of high quality. The cleanser alone is enough to make me throw out any cleanser I have in my bathroom. It smells good enough to eat, takes every stitch of make up off my face with out irritation, and when I use it with the rose toner and the serum, it's like my face has never had a pore. I could go on about the amazing qualities of the two different types of honey used in the cleanser, the rose essential oils in the toner, or the fact that the serum is a dry oil that leaves your skin baby soft and not oily feeling at all, but I suggest you go in and see for yourself! I love this shop! Jen and her staff are very helpful and friendly. I stop in when ever I'm in Half Moon Bay to buy gifts for my friends and me. There is always something new so it's worth it to stop in often. It's not just for the gardener. In addition to plants, succulent wreaths and gardening gifts, they have herbal bath and body products, teas, candles, honey, etc.. The shop has something for everyone! I really really wanted to like this cute little shop. Unfortunately, that was not the case. I came in on a weekday looking for a Valentine's Day gift for a friend. I had been in before, but this was my first time in with the intention to purchase something. The girl helping me was very sweet, and she suggested a few items before I settled on a small potted plant. I was a little taken aback by the $25 price tag for a very small perennial, but I figured that a locally owned place such as this could use the business. The girl explained to me that their growing cycles were short, but that it could be replanted in my backyard and that they would re-bloom about once a year. The plant was blooming when I bought it. She wrapped it for me in nice paper and I took it home. Two days later, the whole flowering portion of the plant was brown and dry. Yes, she mentioned that the cycle for blooming was short. However, I was planning to give this to my friend the next day, and was obviously not going to gift her a dried out, brown flower with a green stalk. After the holiday weekend was over (this was about 3 days later) I came back with my brown plant to ask for a refund. The girl I gave my plant to exclaimed that the plant looked like it had been "baked." No, I explained that this is what it looked like right after I bought it, and that I couldn't give it as a gift. The sales girl nodded and went back to get her boss (I assume). I explained my situation and the woman was quick to tell me that they do not accept returns for plants, and that I could choose a different plant or an item of similar value. Confused, I mentioned that there is no return policy posted, and I was not informed of one when I made the purchase. She told me that it is listed on the receipt. However, when I bought the plant, I used a credit card and was emailed a receipt. So, at the time I made the purchase I did NOT know the policy, nor would I have been rushing to check the receipt that had been emailed to me. She also told me that they could not know what had happened in between the time that I bought the plant and when I returned it, implying that I had somehow ruined it with poor care. I had kept the plant in my house out of the sun, just as instructed. I again explained that I had bought the plant as a gift, and expected that they would understand, especially considering that it had cost me $25. I was wrong. I told them that I did not want a plant for myself, and that I didn't even have a backyard that I could plant it in. The conversation began to get heated, and I finally agreed to just take a gift card for the same value. It is always my aim to give local businesses traffic whenever I can, being that I have lived in Half Moon Bay for 20 years now. It is very sad to me when I am forced into punitive situations as such, and would really liked to have had a good experience. I will leave this place to tourists and passerby's. read more

This quaint and charming shop is centrally located in downtown Half Moon Bay, and I love their eclectic mix of unique gift items, gardening and beauty products! Many of the items for sale are produced locally, and others are sourced from faraway places such as Belize, Portugal etc. I recently purchased a very unusual handmade ceramic container that I adore. It is a great place to browse - they carry their own line of organic beauty products, fair trade cocoa beans, high-end gardening items, and all sorts of unique merchandise that you cannot find at the mall! They seem to offer new items fairly frequently, so I usually browse the store every time I walk by. The owner is a lovely young lady who is extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about her products. On one occasion I was helped by an employee who was equally charming, friendly and personable. Garden Apothacary should be on everyone's list of places to visit when in Half Moon Bay. It is such a quaint shop right as you enter downtown. Just walking in the door is a huge stress relief for me. The shop is filled with AMAZING teas and skin care products that are actually grown, harvested and hand made in Half Moon Bay by the staff. Local as local can be. I purchased the Higher Ground facial serum and I couldn't believe how my skin looked ten years younger! The teas are absolutely delicious and refreshing. I would recommend the Summer Blend and Chai Tea for this time of year. Another huge draw for me was the awesome selection of air plants, all shapes and sizes. A new addition to the store is their Corner Garden Nursery just two blocks south on the same side of the street across from Moonside Bakery. Their plant selection is amazing and the plants they sell will actually grow on the coast unlike other local nurseries that cater to more of the out of town buyers. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable and the layout is so warm and welcoming. Another huge plus about Garden Apothecary is their involvement in the community especially the internships they offer for the AG girls program at the local high school. I just discovered this shop yesterday and fell in love immediately. It fits in perfectly with the charm you'd expect to come with a shop that's on main street! First, the second you walk in, you're struck with the most wonderful smells of lavender and other flowers and herbs. Second, they have an INCREDIBLE assortment of air plants (tillsandia)! Some of them are a little pricey- I will say that, but they are in great shape and some of them are hard to find so it was amazing to see a shop carrying a bunch of the less known ones! That being said, if you're looking for a lot of the more popular air plants, you can always check out Oddysea too. They are generally cheaper there (but again, they only carry a few, more popular, varieties... I love oddysea though and you should check them out regardless). I only bought air plants on this trip but plan on going back soon (or buying from them online) to try some of their home-made beauty products. I sampled one of the oils and it smelt just divine, but alas I didn't have very much money to spend... Also, random but really cool thing- They had this amazing collection (although pretty expensive, but I guess for good reason) of old mason jars that the sales girl showed me. We're talking mason jars from the early 1900's. Really neat collectors items for sure! Last but not least, I should probably mention the service. I was one of the first customers of the day, so sometimes that means you don't get much attention because the workers are trying to clean and restock things... However, that was not the case here. The woman who helped me (though I'm sad I didn't get her name to give her a shout out) was super friendly and very knowledgeable about all of the plants. She told me things that I didn't even know about air plants (and I do quite a bit of research on how to take care of mine)! She also told me a bunch about the store and how it came to be, and how they make some of the products. Truly a really great experience and I will be back! :D Highly recommend it too! read more
