Hi, this nursery is great and the owner is very knowledgeable and the prices are lower than other nurseries in the Bay Area. It's my go to nursery. I believe the owner is Ron and not sure of his wife's name. They have better quality and significantly more knowledge than Home Depot but they don't have 10 people working there. Someday we are all going to miss having experts and artisans. As you can imagine running a business is very tough especially a nursery where you have quite a bit of overhead and attention needed for all those plants and facilities. We all work hard keeping up our homes, imagine the work needed to run a nursery. Please be considerate with the negative comments and try to be patient if the few people working there are occupied. I'm so disappointed that the princess plant we bought and planted, faded in a few days. Thankfully we ended up getting the smaller $15 one and not the larger $45 one. We're reasonably experienced with plants, live in the climate zone and followed the planting instructions, so this is unlikely user error. Had hoped that it would recover from what we thought was shock of transplanting. Sadly not the case. We're unlikely to go back. read more

Zero. Plants are not in good condition. I've never seen more root bounds trees in my life. Looks like you're buying a bucket of snakes. The plants are rarely labeled with a price and definitely have no identification tags. Half Moon Bay Nursery is 2 minutes away and better priced. Bongard's prices were double hmb nursery for the items I was able to compare. read more

Don't let the carefree, and somewhat wild organization (and sometimes not so obvious staff) fool you - this place is legit. If you want plants that are well beyond the variety and size you'd find at a conventional nursery- you've come to the right place. And if you visit the office and chat with the staff you'll find they're keen to help, open to bringing in new varietals and happy to share a love of coastal plants who will thrive in our unique environment. read more

We were there on a Tuesday so the place not busy. We were ready to pay for our plants but the man inside the cashiers office continued talking on the phone and did not even acknowledge our presence, even though he saw us! He continued talking on the phone. Needless, to say, we abandoned the plants and left. He was so rude! read more

Bongard's is our go-to place for trees and plants. The guy knows his stuff and the selection is awesome. He works with local landscapers and often we just tag our purchases and the landscapers pick 'em up, deliver and plant. And as a bonus, they are on the side of 92 that makes it super-simple for locals to exit to return home, regardless of the day of the week or the time. :D read more

This is a VERY hidden nursery on 92....driving by, you see all the big nurseries on the south side, but Bondard's kinda just sneaks by. Which is a shame. They are by FAR the biggest nursery on 92. Easily 3-4 times bigger than the next one. And here's the scary part....their prices are awesome. Yeah...HMB nursery, prices awesome. Who woulda thunk. AND...ok, here's the kicker.....you walk in and ask for some abstract product that doesn't even GROW in HMB? Yeah, they have it. Go figure..... read more

The selection here is great. It's huge! We're sort of newbie gardeners, so we needed a lot of help which we received, late on a Saturday afternoon a few weeks back. All of the plants we bought are doing great and the guidance we received (how many plants for our space, how much soil, etc.) was pretty much spot on. We landed up having to move 5 of the plants after doing a little research and discovering the plants were poisonous for dogs. So, I wish we had gotten that guidance, but all-in-all, a good experience. Prices are a bit higher than Home Depot, but I prefer to shop from indendently owned business rather than huge chains. IMHO it's worth a little extra cost to know we're supporting a local business. read more

Large nursery is fun place to visit. We about about 20 shrubs/tress of various sizes 1 gallon to 15 gallons, spending about $800. Seems to have better selection than the 3 other nurseries I visited in HMB and the 2 Home Depots I visited. I'm just a novice gardener, but I felt this was the best place to start and end my shopping. read more

I'm surprised by the positive reviews. I went here looking for succulents and small pots. The succulent selection was so-so and the health of the plants was so-so. No one seemed interested in helping us, even though we were there for quite a while and actively went looking for help. We also asked them if we could have or buy some 2-inch plastic pots that were in their recycling bin. Not a lot--just 20 or so. They said they'd give them to us for 50 cents each--that's $10 for all 20. These are just those cheap-ass square pots that you can buy on eBay in bulk for literally 7 cents each. They were clearly just trying to take advantage of us. It's nice that there are a bunch of nurseries in HMB, but I like pretty much all the others better than this one. read more

Went to Bongard's today on the recommendation of a neighbor. I know absolutely nothing about plants, but my wife gave me task of purchasing ~50 plants for a project in our yard (she had obtained the list from our landscaper). That being said, I was completely lost as to what these plants were, what they looked like, etc, and had little hope that this was going to be easy. I was wrong. When I got there, Gala (I think?) took the list from me and checked to see if they had all the plants I needed. They did. She then proceeded to walk me around the nursery and helped me pick out all the plant on the list, while sharing information as to what these plants would look like when they grew, watering needs, shade/sun needs, etc. We gathered all the plants, then she had some guys help me load everything in my truck, rang up the total, and I was on my way. Thirty minutes, if that. Perfect! Absolutely 100% could not have done this without her help, and she could not have been more friendly and attentive. Their cat is nice, too. read more

We Love this place!!! Being a HMB resident it seems that everyone frequents the "other" to remain nameless nursery in HMB, but honestly, after being at Bongard's it is the only place we will now go to buy our plants for our needs! We found the owners and workers very informative and willing to answer every novice question I had pertaining to the items I was seeking. The grounds were well kept and the plants where very healthy. Everything we have purchased at Bongard's have done very well and look great in our yard! We couldn't be happier! read more

I'm sorry to say, I don't know how they stay in business. Sold us an expensive tree that was in bad health. The lady there couldn't even tell the difference between trees. And it was obvious she didn't know what she was talking about but acted like she did. read more

i used many places for my tree, but bongards are the strongest and thrive & fruit twice ad fast and yield much more fruit...we buy all our trees, now 48 fruit trees and veggies from them. don't know whaty he says to them ..but they grow so much faster and larger than anyone elses'. mike romano read more

Ron and his wife are AWESOME! We first came apon this nursery 3 years ago when we got started with becoming the avid gardeners we are now. We bought our very first fern from them "our girl" she is big and beautiful now and she has 4 more fern friends since then. We also bought two Buddha Hand citrus trees that are growing just as well. Over half of our garden (which is very extensive at this point) came from Bongard's. We have been to plenty of nursery's and met wonderful people at most of them but this is our favorite. And the prices are always fair compared to most. read more

Trees!!! I am in the market for larger trees and stopped by Bongards, right on 92. They have thousands of trees, especially pittosporum, redwood, fruit trees, cypress, bamboo, Palm, and many more. Plus shrubs and other things. All the 24" box trees (about 10' ft tall) are $395 and those in large pots run $100-125. The 4-5' redwoods were $40. I checked some other prices online for 24" box in CA and the going rate seems to be just under $200, so they are overpriced. I did want to ask if they have a delivery and planting service included in the price but I couldn't find a soul to answer any questions, other than the kitty who wasn't very informed ;). This place is huge, and the plants and trees looked very healthy, though the service was non-existent. With a few sales reps, and potentially lower prices, I would this this place should be a huge destination for tree and shrub buyers!!! 5 stars for their inventory and 2 stars for prices and service. read more

Ron is a doctor of all things green and has what seems to be a gazillion trees growing deep into the canyon. He quickly pointed out what plants and trees would do well for where I live and gave me great advice for long term care. Ron is a sole proprietor and actually lives on the property and like growing saplings, patience is a virtue when visiting. As a couple of reviewers have pointed out here, it may not be the place for those expecting prompt service, but the merchandise is priced commensurately. read more

We bought what we were told was an evergreen ash about ten years ago. It wasn't and isn't. For these several years since, it's lost all its leaves and seeds every winter. It's a mess. So, I curse Bongard at least once a year. read more

Today was the third time that I tried to shop at Bongard's (mainly because it is the most accessible driving west on 92). For whatever reason, the woman who works the morning shift did everything possible to *not* sell me plants. I asked her if she had any native plants: "No, none". She was similarly unhelpful finding us anything that was at least low maintenance and had low water needs on the coast. Could you sell me anything? Answer: shrug. read more

A neighbor - the HOA president - decimated one of my trees by pruning the major branches to reduce the size and destroy the tree because he personally did not like it. The HOA has agreed to replace the tree, and I was thrilled to find Bongards. Their assortment is terrific, and I should have no trouble finding a 13' replacement for my dearly loved 20-yr old tree. read more

Ron helped me pick some trees to create a large hedge. They have the best selection of every plant you could possibly need in the bay area, the prices for the trees I bought were well under the other local nursery prices (like $95 each cheaper for the 15 gallon trees) and the quality was better. Ron and his wife are extremely knowledgeable and can recommend all sorts of solutions to your garden needs provided you can explain the situation. Those expecting to be waited on hand and foot should probably go back to Home Depot. read more

Today was my first visit to Bongard's and wow was I impressed. This place is HUGE and has a great selection plants, trees and shrubs. We had to replace a Pittosporum Tenuifolium tree in our backyard. Finding one was a bit of a chore. We called around the peninsula and finally someone at Half Moon Bay Nursery suggested that we try Bongard's. This place had a huge selection. There were probably 8 or more to choose from. The man working that morning came over and helped us pick out what he thought was the best tree based on our needs and one of the workers (without us asking) loaded the tree in our SUV and strapped it down for us. We used Trent at Bongard nursery to create a vision for our landscape and to make it happen. He was phenomenal. he listened carefully to what we wanted, reviewed pictures we shared, and even drove around our neighborhood with us to make sure we were on the same page. He worked well with our HOA, creating a drawing that they approved quickly and then remained flexible in changes we wanted to make as he actually put the plants in. I really liked that they brought out a TON of plants and let us look at a version of the layout and then let us play with interchanging plants to see what looked best. That was so great. He even helped us with extras like getting a good irrigation person to do sprinklers and thinking through pest control in the upcoming months. He came out and checked on the new plants several times after the design was done to make sure the plants were all doing well. It couldn't have been a better experience. The before and after of our yard is incredible. It is a tropical paradise now. read more
