Months in advance, I ordered an Orchid of the Month Club deal by phone, involving 3 orchids to be delivered over a period of 5 months as gifts. I specified the dates which were special occasions, and they said there would be no problem in delivering them on those dates. The first orchid was delivered 3 days late, on a weekend, so that the recipient was not at her work address to receive the order, which had arrived complete with aphids, and had to be re-routed. The second order arrived 6 days early with no card. When I complained about their service, they were defensive and arrogant in their response, and cancelled my third order. I could understand if they had trouble getting the flowers there on time, but they should not promise what they cannot deliver, and they should at least try to communicate with the the buyer if they cannot deliver what they've promised.

They are small, and I brought one home a few months ago that after a few days I had to toss (after I realized) and also risked all my other plants. I stopped by early January and the tiny white fluffy mealy bugs were still very much visible. Really hope they fix this issue as I would happily spend a lot of money at this place!! Always fun to stop in. Staff don't really acknowledge your presence, but I actually prefer/don't mind that aspect. Please fix the mealy bugs situ so I can bring some orchid babies home!!!!

This is not a florist, it is a nursery with a specific focus on orchids. It was a little hard to find the first time I went there, but it was worth it. This place was made for orchid enthusiasts. They always have a huge selection of Phalaenopsis varieties (everyone does) in different sizes (miniatures and giants), but they also regularly carry Oncidium, Miltonia, Cattleya, and Dendrobium orchids. I have also found some gorgeous Paphiopedilum and Vendaeous specimens as well as many others, and the occasional surprisingly exotic and spectacular botanical. You can get beautiful potted gift orchids here, but their main focus is on growing orchids of all types and selling to both wholesale & retail customers and orchidists. If you like orchids, and are looking for rare and unusual finds, this is the place to go. To find them, follow your phone's map and you'll be led to a modest and understated sign with an arrow pointing up a hill. Proceed slowly and carefully up the hill and park to the left. You'll see 4 quonset hut-like buildings (green houses) and need to start in the left-most, which is their retail shop and has a sign on the door welcoming you. The right-most greenhouse is also open to the public, the two in the middle are not (they are growing greenhouses full of orchids that are not yet spiking). Keep in mind this is a working wholesale nursery, with a retail outlet attached (with better gift orchids than any florist), and not a flower shop, and you'll understand why it has a no-frills, utilitarian, green & organic, light-industrial feel to it. Once you get inside, you'll realize what a find this place is, with the best selection of healthy, thriving, beautiful orchids (many of which are unusual and rare) in the Bay Area. Oh, yeah - they're very reasonably priced as well!

Go to Shelldance and you'll be only 10 meters away from Dan's greenhouse. I describe how to get to Shelldance in my review of them. Dan's collection is spectacular. I think much of the collection is not for sale, but like Nancy next door, if the plant is big enough he will sometimes sell cuttings from them. Squeezing through the narrow walkways overgrown with orchids and ferns felt like pushing through the forest at Monteverde. The benches themselves are covered with orchids and ferns. I don't mean in pots, but the wood frames of the benches have orchids growing on them. And under them. Everywhere. Someday I want a place like this. He has a lot of very unusual plants, and species Ive seen almost nowhere else. Dan is extremely nice and when I go, I spend a lot of time just talking about orchids with him and feel guilty for taking up so much time. But I think he's like I am with other animals like snakes and lizards, where Ill talk to people for hours about them, too. Its really impressive how much he knows about all his plants: not just the species or where they are native to, but who gave him that individual plant, how long ago, where they got it, etc. I guess I know these things about my plants too, but he has two or three orders of magnitude more plants than I do. Anyone with a real interest in orchids beyond what you see at Home Depot or Safeway should walk around here for a while.

I have been buying orchids from Dan for over 10 years. He has very reasonable prices and fabulous plants. He is very good at sharing growing information. If you just follow 3 or 4 requirements for each orchid, you will find you can keep them alive and get them to bloom each year. If you are looking for something special or unusual, this is the place to go. The owner, Dan Newman, is extremely knowledgeable and one of the kindest people I know. If you tell him about your growing conditions, he will recommend orchids that will do well in that situation. He has everything from reliable windowsill growers to fussy greenhouse rarities. Just because an orchid is reliable and easy to grow doesn't mean it won't be spectacular when in bloom! If you don't want to go to Pacifica, you can call and ask him which shows and sales he will have a booth at - he may be selling some place near you. He doesn't keep a list of his plants on his website. You just need to set up an appointment and go and see for yourself. He also does orchid boarding, so if you only want your orchids around when they are blooming, you can arrange that also.

Honestly, I was sold before I even made it to the plants. The nursery itself has such lovely energy, with beautiful flowers, butterflies fluttering around, and that charming old-school neighborhood nursery feel. The people working there were warm, friendly, and genuinely helpful. I asked about orchids, and instead of trying to sell me something, they gave me the most honest answer: orchids are fragile, they die if you overwater or underwater them, so they don't carry them. I loved that. No pushy sales pitch, just real advice. Such a sweet, peaceful little spot. I left happier than when I walked in.

In general, I think the shop could have a larger plant selection (lack of selection could be a seasonal thing?). I liked a lot of the planters and option to mix and match plants in them but didn't see a lot of plants that caught my eye. I ended up going somewhere else afterwards and took home 7 plants. That said, I do think it's worth checking out. I'll definitely go back next time I'm in the area.

There are lots of plants to check out, along with interesting pots and wall containers for them. There's been a growing selection of carnivorous plants as well! Over the past few weeks I've picked up two Nepenthes (tropical pitcher plants) and a very small sundew, and I'm very happy with my purchases. They had some lovely sarracenias (North American pitcher plants) that were tempting but I didn't purchase. This year I've had a renewed interest in houseplants, especially carnivorous plants. My son and I have been trading tips and figuring out what conditions are best for each type of plant. The owner was very helpful with some advice for our fiddle leaf fig plant (in most cases the answer is more light, assuming you aren't overwatering). Once when we come in there were lots of cuttings of succulents being propagated and small sundews being grown; the shelves are full of little surprises like this. Looking forward to our next visit, since I still have room on my plant shelf for one more hanging plant!

The flowers are overpriced…read more I am leaving this 1/5 review, because during my purchase on a Sunday afternoon, the shopkeeper lost his temper and yelled at my mother and I. He threw his cap at the floor, walked away from us at the register, and tried ignoring us to make us go away while there were others in line. I asked him not to raise his voice at us too. This was after he had charged us more than what was stated on the price tag of the bouquet. We paid it since wanted that bouquet in particular. This exchange overall felt very disrespectful. We had bought 10 peonies here for $67 dollars. The peonies here are $30 a bunch (5 pc). This is quite overpriced, as they are resold from another vendor. The quality of the flowers was also not great. One bunch of peonies had mold growing on it, meaning it had been there for awhile. We have bought fresher peonies at Whole Foods before. I don't recommend -- buying flowers here ruined my day, and that's the opposite point of buying flowers.

That being said, I checked this out with my neighbor on it's opening day... and it's cute and I know they are just starting out, however the prices were a bit insane. I usually have NO problem paying a little more to support local, privately owned businesses, however I bought 3 little seedlings that had just barely begun to sprout.. and they ranged from $6- $9. I paid it because they had some plants that I had been searching all over the East Bay for... but these seedlings were BARELY 3cm tall. And when I say barely I mean they had barely sprouted. If I'm going to be paying $9 for a plant, I would expect it to at least be 6-8 inches tall at the very least. Also, if we want to encourage people to buy locally and purchase native plants, I feel like it needs to be affordable. I will keep re-visiting this nursery because I'm excited to see how it develops but I hope they re-think their pricing scales because these plants were not established and I prob won't pay that again. Happy to support their grand opening though.
