What a delightful place! Brought my mom here post Mother's day and she was like a kid in a candy store! She literally said "I want to work here!" which is probably the highest compliment she could give. Met up with a friend here and the three of us walked all the aisles and all the sections picking up the plants that struck our fancy - from flowers, to vegetables, to ground cover, to air plants, to houseplants, to fruit trees - they've got it all! Good service, clean and organized and super reasonable prices. This is far enough for us that we won't be coming here every weekend, but certainly worth making a 1-2x year trip to stock up, learn and get inspired. read more

What would have otherwise been an enjoyable visit to HMB Nursery was tainted by the incredibly rude cashier (older guy with dark hair and a serious attitude). I'm a patient person who gives folks the benefit of the doubt, but he was quite blatantly unhelpful and condescending. His behavior encouraged me to write this review and to take my local and frequent business elsewhere - and encourage others to do the same! Just got back from Half Moon Bay Nursery, and I'm still in a state of bliss! I've always been a superfan of HMB Nursery, but today I was talking to one of the friendly workers, and they told me that there are new owners of the nursery. I noticed that the nursery was popping with color. They reframed the environment in the most gorgeous way, and it is still my oasis. My happy meter hit an all time high! I'm so grateful for my friend who took me to this wonderful nursery, which I may have never discovered otherwise. There are several in a row on the way to HMB and this is one of them. The prices are so reasonable, staff is helpful and friendly and the plants are beautiful. I wasn't planning on getting *another* plant, but then I fell in love with a $7 philodendron. Okay, at the risk of alerting everyone to what I feel is one of the Bay Area's best kept secrets, here is my review of Half Moon Bay Nursery! We come here every year for what my husband calls my "birthday shopping spree." We bring the big car, and he does extra push ups to make sure his arms are prepared to push a giant flatbed cart up and down the gravelly rows. We also make sure we are dressed for the cold, as it can get unexpectedly drizzly, windy, and chilly in Half Moon Bay regardless of the season! The staff here are AMAZING. Many of them still wear masks during the flu season, which we really appreciate. The watering staff are always calling out friendly "hellos" as you enter, you will be greeted by beautiful opera music playing over the speakers, and the grounds are littered with gorgeous hummingbirds who follow you around as if to say, "Welcome to our magical home!" For those interested in "just the facts," the nursery is always well stocked with healthy plants, they have an indoor plant greenhouse, potting and gardening supplies, fertilizers, and the most glorious hanging baskets. To top it all off, the prices are absurdly reasonable, and you can drive to beach afterwards! What a paradise! read more

This nursery holds a special place in my heart. It was one of the first places I visited after moving to the Bay, and it's been a wonderful experience ever since. I love wandering through the aisles of beautiful plants, discovering new ones to bring home. Whenever I've had questions, the staff has always been helpful with care tips. This is the place to go for plant lovers. They have lots of varieties of plants in a range of price points. There's something for everyone here. The nursery is off of hwy 92 and it's a pretty sharp turn into the parking lot so pay attention as you get closer to the area. I would suggest coming early because the parking lot is on the smaller side. I recently came on a weekend an hour after opening. By the time I left, I could see the traffic of cars coming up hwy 92. It can be overwhelming coming here because there are just so many different varieties of plants... trees, flowers, vegetables, citrus trees, bonsai, succulents, cactus, etc. In addition to plants, they have everything else you might need to keep your plants alive... pots, tools, plant food, books, etc. When checking out, our kids each received a few pumpkin plant. Wish us luck. Maybe we won't need to buy pumpkins come October. P.s. Be sure to wear old shoes because some paths are dusty/muddy. read more

Just the happiest place! If you love plants and want to fill your home with the healthiest plants - this is the place I'd recommend. Great soil, great plants and lots of tips from the staff. I find the prices very very good and super value for money. They have all types of plants from indoor plants to outdoor trees and the drive to the nursery itself takes you past the crystal springs lake. We had a wonderful experience exploring and purchasing California native plants for our landscaping. We are from an indigenous tribe in California, Amah Mutsun/Ohlone, and were so nicely greeted by the staff to help us out. They even offered to stay in contact with our tribe as we do a lot of land stewardship in the Santa Cruz hills to restore and replace invasive and alien plants to bring back to native Californian. There are several nurseries in this area, but this was the best we've found. Excellent selection, beautifully arranged, and everything is easy to find. The staff were helpful and friendly. You can ask for help, but I also enjoyed just wandering and seeing what there was to discover. Did anyone else notice, that under many of the flower beds are mossy green brickwork and mini plants? This nursery is located in such an idyllic setting with perfect weather, cool sea breeze and mountain backdrop. I loved browsing this nursery so much and can't wait to visit again next year. Had so much fun looking at their gorgeous selection of plants, flowers and trees. Brought home the biggest blooming hydrangeas, pink apricot Begonia, 2 heirloom tomatoes plants and 1 really unique orchid. So pretty! Spent an hour here but easily could gaze at all the different flowers for another hour! My mother when she first came to the United States years ago worked at a nursery here in Half Moon Bay. My father met my mom here and bought her flowers daily. He eventually walked into the nursery and told the manager at the time that my mother would be resigning as she is now moving to San Jose with him (which was also news to my mother). He swopped her away and that was that. Now, over 35 years later, I am married and my wife talks to my mother about stories like this. My mom raves about the beautiful flowers they have all throughout Half Moon Bay. For Valentines Day, I took my wife here. We came here not only to get her flowers, but to also get my mother some as well as she is my Forever Valentine. The nursery is massive and has everything from succulents, to trees, bamboo, flowers, herbs, EVERYTHING! The prices are incredibly affordable. Just walking around, you can spend hours looking at all the beautifully grown plants. The people that work here are also very friendly. Overall; I highly recommend this nursery. I was looking around all over for a western redbud to plant in my backyard, and found that HMB Nursery has an amazing selection of trees and plants of all kinds. The staff is very helpful and friendly, they even set aside a nice tree for me. I figured I'd pick up a fuyu persimmon tree as well while I was there. They took great care to make sure that since I had to lay the trees down in my minivan that not too much soil was spilled. Would come back here for all of my needs. read more

We have been coming to the Half Moon Bay Nursery for almost 2 decades now and there is a reason why we keep coming back........ First and foremost that have an expansive selection of plants, trees, orchids, succulents, etc. It just goes on and on. They also have a very cool bonsai section. The sheer size and selection can be a bit daunting at first, but if you do your homework you will be fine. They also have informative labels on almost everything to make sure that your choice fits your space. Fear not however if you have no idea as the staff is excellent and provides recommendations on what to get and more importantly what not to get depending on your growing space. Parking can be a challenge on the weekends as can the traffic as it is right on Hwy92, but we almost always go during the week so its never too bad. The cat is pretty friendly as well read more

I came here with my mom who loves gardening. I was mostly following her around and not really shopping for myself, but still, I was really impressed by the wide variety of plants they have to offer. They sell everything from pretty flowers, to shrubbery you'd find in a hipster café, and vegetables. They have these large garden carts that you can push around as you shop, which honestly were not that easy to use so I was not a fan. Plus, the carts were HUGE so pushing them past other customers in the cramped aisles was a struggle. If you're lucky, you can also score some cardboard boxes to place your plants. My mom bought enough plants to fill two of those boxes, and the total was only like $50 ish dollars, which she tells me is very affordable (idk man, I'm not a plant person). There was this cute kitty taking a nap near the cashier; many kiddos and myself were free to pet the kitty while she napped hehe. I'm giving 4 stars because I believe there were only two employees working (they might have been the owners? unsure) but it was really difficult to flag them down to get help because there were so many other customers. Also, it wasn't made clear to us how we could take our plants to our car after we had purchased them. Pushing the cart would have been too difficult. I ended up stealing another carboard box lying around to help my mom carry the plants to her cart...not sure if those are meant to be taken from the store...sorry! Bring your own little boxes just in case if you're coming to buy plants for a more convenient transport. read more

This is probably my favorite nursery. I don't go as often as I would like because it is a little bit of a drive to Half Moon Bay. This nursery has an amazingly huge selection of plants, succulents, and trees. Their prices are extremely reasonable, especially compared to their local competitors and farmers' markets. I mostly purchase succulents and they are always high quality. They usually carry the most common succulents, but every once in a while, I will find an unusual or rare succulent there. Prices are reaonsable. With the exception of checking out, I don't usually have much interaction with the staff, but the cashier is usually cool. read more

I love plants! We happened to pass by this nursery on our way to visit some reposed loved ones at Skylawn Memorial Park. Hubby said we would stop by on our way back. After our stop at Skylawn, as promised, he took me here. The nursery is huge and well organized with plenty of signs directing visitors to the types of plants whether they're outdoor or house plants. If you want to start growing bonsais they have the 4" starters here. Lots of species for different types of weather. Since I live in the valley where we experience hot climates during long summers I went straight to the cactus plants LoL! Over across are the succulents. I was excited to see this as thought of my youngest daughter... she loves these plants so I took pictures of a few and sent her the pics. She chose one and I bought it for her. Hubby, in the meantime, was intrigued with the Venus flytraps. The staff are friendly and helpful. Fast service too. Would love to come back in the springtime when the flowers are in bloom. As a lover of plants finding a nursery that offers beautiful healthy plants with a good inventory is a must. This prompted my visit here. I came by right when it opened. It's a large nursery with all types of plants both indoor and outdoor. I saw several staff filling the nursery with inventory. I received no greeting as I walked past several of the staff. I couldn't find the indoor plants so I had to find someone and ask for help. Indoor plants are behind the register. I walked in and expected a large selection of items. I was disappointed with the lack of inventory. All the shelves were bare. An item of each here and there. The plants didn't look healthy at all. I couldn't find anything. Very limited indoor plant inventory on my visit. If you are looking for outdoor plants they have a lot of inventory. I walked up to the cashier and asked if they had a plant I wanted and she let me know they were being brought in. A man was putting prices on them and wasn't welcoming as I tried to look at the plants after I asked if I could while he was pricing them. I picked two of the ones I liked, paid, and left. Anytime I asked for help or had a question the staff was very dry. If the customer is greeting the staff instead of the other way around then service is already lacking. The drive all the way there was not worth it. With so many nurseries both near and far I recommend you find the one that meets your needs and is welcoming. read more
