I'm so glad I didnt listen to the reviews!!! The food was very taste (so taste I didnt have to add any additional salt or ketchup ). I order the two eggs with bacon, potatoes, and rye toast. The coffee was also really good...not the best I ever had, but far from horrible. Two things to know before you dine. - the eggs do come slightly runny like people say. If you don't like this, ask them to scramble harder. - they force a 15% tip on you. Which is the reason I knocked off 1 star...I was annoyed by this. I guess they don't trust us to tip??? On our way out of town, we enjoyed a last meal at the Garden State Diner in Newark. We both had average food (him a gyro, me a beef dip). It was a step up from the no-name fast food pizza places and the McDonalds. The service was a bit slow for an airport (really, doesn't everyone have someplace to be?!). My Yelp List, "Celebrities Who Eat" should probably be renamed to something like, "People you might recognize from TV, probably a low-rated reality show eating some food". Excellent service. About $16 for a burger and fries. The fries were perfect: Thick, potato-y, crispy, lightly seasoned. The menu is uninspired but if you want a diner standard, they've got it. Cant speak to the quality of their beef burgers; I ordered The Happy Cow, which is a very basic (lettuce, tomato, red onion) sandwich with a vegan patty. It wasn't bad, but I would not come here for their vegan patty. It tastes and feels like mashed vegetable--definitely not a meat imitation and not something particularly tasty in its own right either. But the fries were perfect. read more

I was really surprised to find this little gem in Newark! Hands down, THE BEST service I have ever had in EWR. Usually the service in that airport is so bad it's almost not even worth eating, but this time it was excellent! The young woman who waited on me seemed actually genuinely happy! The menu had a nice selection and I enjoyed the diner's decor and music. I ordered a turkey club and was pleasantly surprised when I saw the affordable price!! My food came out quickly and the sandwich was on par with any other diner in Jersey. The best part is that they also serve beer! I will definitely be back! Grabbed a beer (see pic) and then ordered a perfectly executed Cheese Burger Deluxe (see pic). It was cooked to order as I watched. Service was super attentive. I understand an airport get super crowded so I don't ever expect quick service at and airport restaurant. Yet, when other larger orders are placed after mine and given to customers then you know something just isn't right. This diner is one of the last places to eat when gating near United gates 22-25. Prices are very expensive. Yet, it's the airport so it's understandable. Cashier was quick placing our order and ringing us up. She explained the sandwich options located by the window and the drink options. 3pm and they had ran out of orange juice. We ordered two sandwiches but only one was given. As I questioned for the other they told me to wait and I could see the employee walking over to crab it from the fridge and "warm" it up. Within a minute or so she brings it out. As we walk to our gate and began to eat the last sandwich, it was still cold! The cooked bacon still tasted cold. The cheese was no where near melted. Wouldn't recommend anything located in their window area. The cheese steak was freshly made and delicious. Note to place: sometimes rushing isn't worth it. Apologize to costumers when you're at fault and get their meals right. read more

I've been bummed by my last few airport meals. I don't know if anyone else out there has noticed but airport food really sucks now. I'd imagine it was much better in the glory days of flying (1950ish). Either way it was lunch time so I had to fill my belly and popped into the garden state diner. I think it's current grade of 3 is fair. I ate the entire burger and didn't think jeez this is bad once. It's your classic mediocre airport burger but still beats having a pre-made turkey sandwich with soggy bread that you choke down with a Luke warm Diet Coke. Anyways I digress, I'd recommend this place but stick to the basics like burger, blt, turkey club etc. read more

Should have known better after reading all the other reviews. I got pancakes. They over cooked them. Could not get my servers attention to do anything. Not even get the original glass of water I asked for. Made the best of it and ate some of the food since i was starving. Ran out of syrup and still could not get anyone attention. I got up and asked the host to get me water and the bill. Waited 5 more minutes and the original Server Alejandro came with the bill. Still no water. I asked for water the 3rd time. And after 5 more minutes, finally got it. Warm bottled water. Awesome! Alejandro and the rest of the servers were behind the counter laughing and cracking jokes the entire time the customers needed Service. Horrible service. First time EVER that I left a zero tip. I left a note explaining why the service was crappy and why there will be no tip. Doubt anyone cared. Will never go here again, since i do travel in and out of Newark quite a bit. read more

No wonder there wasn't a line. Tables were filthy, no one cleaned them and it took 15 minutes to get acknowledged by our server. Btw, if your server is JOhn, get up and leave. You will be glad you did. After 15 minutes John came by and seemed angry that we had questions and then decided we weren't ready, so he left again without even taking a drink order. When he did come back he had a very specific way of taking our order and going out of turn, asking a question, or anything outside of this was not allowed. John actually didn't give a crap what we did, because there were 5 of us, he already had a guaranteed tip. Boy was he lucky. He dropped off drinks (with no ice), and didn't ever come back until he gave us his bill, and then he never cam back. 15 minutes later we had to ask another guy to help us cash out. Nowadays EVERYTHING is done via an IPad at the airport if you want anything to eat or drink - well after downloading the menu and attempting to place an IPad order 3 times I picked up my stuff and found this little gem around gate 106 terminal C - great breakfast, large cup of coffee and the nicest staff ever! I wasn't expecting much but they surprised me. I ordered the Denver omelette and it was tasty. The side of sourdough toast was done just right, especially after putting butter on it. I usually don't eat the potatoes but they smelled good and was crispy. Spouse ordered the Denver burrito and said it was good. So if you find yourself in Terminal C and your flight leaves from gates 100 to 115, this is a good stop. Afterwards you can walk further down and get coffee from Dunkin near gate 112/113. read more

I grew up in Jersey, there I said it... So of course I'm very familiar with all things Diners. Jersey Diners are famous for it's 40 page menus and the ability to cook you almost anything... How about a table of people and the first order is a western omelet, then a prime rib dinner, burger and fries, a Gyro, pizza, pierogis, fried chicken, eggplant parm, sushi, almost anything you can think of except maybe Chinese food, maybe? Granted most of my memories with Diners revolve around driving home with a group of friends after last call or a smoke filled concert with a case of the wicked munchies and throwing down a healthy plate of French Fries with gravy that tasted awesome and had the double effect of soaking up all those amber colored beverages consumed. These places almost all have bakeries and a display of sweets that make you drool at 2:30am...mmmmm, lemon meringue pie! I'd probably remember more, but again look at what time I was showing up. That being said this location in the airport had the look but a much smaller menu. The food was pretty good and I never expect much from airport food so I enjoyed my meal, then again this may have been one of my very few sober Diner moments. Service was great, and I got to watch the ballgame while I awaited that boarding call that so many times starts with... and now your departure time will be... Oh well. read more

Having passed through Newark Airport a couple of dozen times now, I've gotten pretty familiar with the food choices. Garden State Diner in Terminal C is one of the best of an admittedly not great (if diverse) set of options. I'll be looking for this place on future trips. You can usually get a seat right away. It's got full-on black/white/red diner decor, and is fairly comfortable. Service is a bit slow, even though there seem to be plenty of waiters on staff, so I'd be sure to let the host(ess) know if you've got less than 40 minutes before you need to head to a flight. Breakfast is served any time, and there are many options. The Denver Omelette was good -- nothing special, but then special is probably not what you're looking for when you order a Denver Omelette, is it? Most of the rest of the menu is burgers and sandwiches, around 20 choices. I've also had the Turkey Turnpike (cheese/bacon/bbq sauce on a turkey burger), which I liked a lot. The main things you can't get there are big green salads and organic ingredients. Of course, in general the options for those are pretty slim at airports. Alochol is also served most of the time (from 12pm on Sundays, from 9am on other days), for those that feel the need to drink before flying. read more

The food is actually decent for an airport diner. The salads, while a touch limited in selection, are fresh. The breakfast foods--a staple of any diner menu--are on point, with a nice variety of omelets, good enough pancakes, french toast and waffles, with all the right sides, and a nice variety of fresh fruits. The sandwiches are all decent. The burgers are only so-so, the kind that taste good enough going down, but seem to repeat on you for hours afterwards. The main caveat here is the service. Way too slow for an airport diner, where people are often in a rush to catch a flight. It's a definite step up from the fast food places in the food court. A place where you can bring the entire family and get a decent meal, when you're stuck within the confines of an airport. Not quite a diner I'd go to as my regular place, but definitely my go-to place if I'm in need of a pre-flight meal. read more

What an epic train wreck of a place. I don't expect top notch food or service from an airport establishment, but people should know to avoid this place like the plague. Here are the short points: - my sunny side up eggs were very undercooked. Runny and nasty on top - the eggs had some shell in it. Yep. - I asked the girl managing seating who happened to walk by if she could get me some hot sauce. A simple request. She scoffed that my waitress would be by soon, and walked off to go chat with one of her co-workers. Classy. - the waitress who served me was entirely confused by my request for "the corned beef hash with sunny side up eggs". She eventually figured it out after I pointed to the menu. She then forgot and came back and asked how I wanted my eggs cooked again. - my toast was served separately, because they didn't finish it along with the meal - the toast was not only burnt, but cold. Wow. - the potatoes/onions/peppers side that came with the dish had raw onions and peppers, instead of actually letting them grill. In case you need a little taste of Jersey before leaving the state, there's a classic diner right here at the airport. Don't eat here if you're in a rush, though; service can take a while. For example, when we ordered chicken and waffles, it took them about 15 minutes (of us waiting in anticipation for delicious chicken and waffles) to let us know that they were out of that dish. Although we were disappointed at the lack of chicken and waffles, the food that came out was pretty good. We tried the Popeye's omelette with deli turkey and spinach. They don't skimp on the filling! Most breakfast options come with a choice of sides, such as a banana, fruit cup, hash browns, or home fries. There are also a bunch of individual breakfast sides that you can order, which we helped ourselves to. The pancakes were solid, fluffy diner goodness. The corned beef hash was really good, very beefy. Lots of onions and bell peppers, too. And yes, we couldn't leave New Jersey without having a dish of taylor ham. You can tell that most things here are probably cooked on a flat top. The prices are a little inflated compared to your typical Jersey diner, but I'll chalk that up to airport inflation. Garden State Diner is a notch above than your typical food kiosk choices at the diner. Worth a try, but only if you have time. Don't miss your flight! read more

This place was horrible, and I set the bar really low for airport food... like, a toddler could jump over that bar with room to spare. I got a cheese quesadilla, hold the chicken (it still cost full price...) and the yucko cheese was not melted properly, the tortilla was stale and weird-tasting... I mean it was just inedible. Great option when in the United terminal. Good service and quick too. The food here is nothing more than your standard diner fair. Breakfast is pretty decent too. A little pricier than your typical diner, but it's in the middle of the airport, so understandable. Let's just start out with me talking about how much I despise the Newark airport. It's just so dirty and gross and unfortunate. Garden State Diner wasn't terrible, however. It seems to do the diner thing right for a pretty good price. I ordered the Route 22 burger with fries (sauteed mushrooms, caramelized onions, and Swiss cheese) and my friend got the burger with the jalapenos and onion ring on top. Most importantly, the burger was cooked medium rare, as asked. Was not expecting them to actually get that right. The burger itself was pretty good, albeit a little greasy- I had to keep cleaning up my hands with a napkin from the buttery bun and grease from the burger. But hey, it's a burger. The fries were boring and bland and our service was a little off with little interaction. I would never rave about this place (They have a Smashburger as well, which IMHO cooks up a meaner burger for less money) but I wouldn't be incredibly opposed to going here. If you find yourself hungry with time to kill in EWR, stop in at the Garden State Diner. Their prices seem a little high (it IS an airport), but the portions make the prices ok. My husband had the blueberry pancakes, and I had the Elvis fries (fries covered in beef and bean chili and monterey jack cheese). We also split an Oreo shake. Everything we had was delicious, including the chili. I was sort of expecting that to be subpar but it had lots of flavor and tasted great on the fries with the melted cheese. Service is a little slow, or at least it was on our trip, so keep this in mind if you have another plane to catch in less than 45 minutes or so. Recently ate here during a long layover in Newark. I was seated promptly and service as a whole was decent and efficient, though not overly friendly. The menu is relatively large with a main focus on traditional diner food. I ordered the soup and salad combo which was just ok. The salad was dismal and extremely soggy, but the soup was surprisingly decent. Prices seemed to be fairly reasonable and I appreciated having a sit-down option rather than the typical fast food joint. I'd recommend sticking with the basics (i.e. burger and fries) - they looked much better coming out of the kitchen. read more
