Gardner Outdoor and Pool Remodeling has just completed remodeling our pool with pebble sheen plaster. This is the fourth time I've used Gardner to remodel a pool over the last half a century. On each of those four jobs, Gardner has done an excellent job without any problems or delays. Once you use a company and get good service, you are likely to use them again. That has certainly been my experience with Gardner. All of their employees did an excellent job and were respectful of our property. My pool service technician services 80 pools and he told me that our pool remodeling was the best he has ever seen. He told me a litany of horror stories about botched remodeling jobs and lawsuits that some of his clients have had using these cheap "fly by night" pool remodeling companies. This time, Gardener installed a turtle in the bottom of the pool that looks like a real turtle swimming in the pool. If you are going to remodel a pool, I would consider a turtle or some other sea creature. It really adds a nice touch to your pool. read more

Had hoped this would be a 5 star - unfortunately 2 star. Husband and I did a lot of research and choose Gardner - definitely not the cheapest a because they seemed to have a great reputation and did Pebble Tech. 1- their workers tried to get us to buy not one, but two special tools at the cost of ~$3,000 "if we wanted our job to turn out nice... um what? We had to bring it to managements attention and change supervisors, but the company never owned up to this and said it must have been a "language barrier issue." We feel they tried to totally take advantage of us and had we not pushed back they would have had us pay for tools they should have had. 2- no guidance on pool coping. After the fact, (many issues, stay tuned) they said "we would never actually recommend this product (it was a porcelain paver that was recommended by the pool supply company you have to go through) because it is too difficult to work with and chips." WTF thanks for the guidance!? They are supposed to be experts and we relied on them. They could have informed us. Now I get to worry for the next 15-20 years that I'm going to have crappy looking coping that will chip. 3- the coping.... They received chipped and broken coping from the manufacturer and installed it, tried to get us to sign off on it!!! What!? I've leaned my lesson never to sign on one phase just to move it along. They even had owner out and he said it was "fine and how it was supposed to look." See pics and decide for yourself. Again, tried t take advantage of us... if it was broken from manufacturer it should have been on them to get new materials, not pass on a broken product to the customer. Just wow. See pics. 4- I had to be the one project managing this because of all of the issues. They would have charged us a bunch of extra money (and this was already a $50k plus job) and left us with crappy chipped coping had I not fought for it. At the end of the day, they ordered new coping and installed but still tried to sneak a few by us. I think the corners still look bad where they had to custom cut (didn't have proper tools to finish correctly) and there are a few pieces that they filed down (because they were chipped). read more

We had Tom Cox from Gardner Pools come to our house and advise us on our pool renovation. The pool was built in 2006 and the gray plaster had areas of fading. We also wanted a Baja shelf installed. We signed the contract, and a few months later the process began. Gardner has dedicated crews to each step of the renovation process. They executed their responsibilities with military precision! We had a 1980's style pool that was in need of an update. Although i had couple quotes, i decided to go with Gardner because i felt Kevin was honest and upfront. He didnt try to upsell me things didnt need or want. I had couple companies tried to upsell me on everything and it was a turn off. My instinct is right, throughout the entire project, every added item was itemized (new request) Kevin provided me an option for them to do it or I have someone else to do it. There is no nickle and dime on any agreed items. That is from contract side. If you are looking for a company to stand behind their work and deliver the product you paid 10s of thousands of dollars, for this isn't the one. Everyday I look at my pool I get to be reminded of this when I look at the glaring defect. And I just love it when people ask me why it looks like that. I paid the premium price to use Gardner because I was told I could rest assured the job would be done right and if anything went wrong they would make it right. Unfortunately that was not the case. Gardner decided to install the pebble plaster pool finish on a day with rain in the forecast even after I questioned them about it. Then when it rained that day and I called them to tell them there was a puddle building in the deep end of the pool there was no response and they didn't do anything. The issue immediately became apparent upon filling the pool. A BIG DARK DISCOLORED STAIN where the puddle was. The plaster hydration process "curing or what some might say drying" happened different there since that plaster was submerged. I was obviously not ok with that and notified them immediately. They requested to have me spend my first summer with the pool with the issue to see if it would go away as the pool cured further. And if it persisted they would make it right. Well it didn't go away or even dissipate and I kept sending them pictures showing them. After 6 months when I got them back out there they admitted it was a mistake and did not look acceptable. When I asked them to fix it their proposed resolution was to drain the pool and blow torch the area to try and fix it. A real half assed shortcut attempt of a fix. Anyone who knows anything about cement will tell you exposure to high heat is bad for it and deteriorates the longevity of it. I'm a project manager in the heavy civil construction field so quality characteristics of concrete and cement are something I'm pretty proficient with. But just to be sure I also consulted 3 materials quality control Professional Engineers and the owners of 2 commercial plaster companies and they all agreed that blow torching the plaster might work but would invariably effect its durability and lifespan. I told Gardner I didn't want them to attempt something that for 1 might not even work and wether it did or not, would risk the 20-30 year life of my pool finish I was paying $20k for. I told them if the didn't have a less destructive method then they needed to make it right and redo the plaster. They refused and said that was all they would offer, but they would extend my warranty to 5 years. Which is basically worthless since the problems would most likely arise 10+ years down the road. So that was it. I decided having a discolored pool finish was better than having one I might have to replace again down to road and maybe overtime it might go away. Well it isn't and like I said every time I look at it disappoints me and reminds me of how I got the screwed by Gardner. So take that for what you will. As a side note, the work they didn't mess up is good. And the field workers were good guys. But when it came time for ownership to step up to the plate and do the right thing they went for saving the $ and giving the customer the short end of the stick instead. read more

Gardner did an awesome job refinishing our pool. Their crew was on time, professional and did a great job. Their scheduling time had the different crews in and out quickly and right behind each other so the whole job (demo of the existent finish, a little plumbing and then a new PebbleTek finish) was done in just 5 days. Then start-up of the pool chemistry took about a week and the pool was ready to swim in. Right after demoing the existing finish they found some 'rebound' on our steps. They recommended re-pouring new concrete there before proceeding. It was an extra $1000 but it didn't delay the rest of the job at all and I trust their assessment. We opted for them because they were one of the few crews in San Diego that installs the longer-lasting PebbleTek finished. The one we chose doesn't actually have pebbles in it, it's similar to a traditional plaster finish but will last a bit longer. It looks great so far. They did a great and timely job. I'll definitely be recommending them to friends in the future. read more

We contacted Gardner to get an estimate for refurbishing our pool. We wanted new tile, new coping and new pebble finish. We were told that "Josh" would be calling us. He never called. We were told TWO more times that he would call, and never heard from him. On our FOURTH call to Gardner the woman answering the phone said that she would just schedule an appointment for someone to come to our home the following week. The rep came out, spoke to us briefly, and then told us we could "go inside and wait for her" while she measured the area. Not terribly friendly. When she finally talked with us it was to go over the estimate. We discussed materials, and she said that Gardner had a showroom with samples of tile, etc. if we were interested in looking at some options. The next week we were in the area, so we stopped by Gardner's office, expecting to look at samples. We went into the office, and the staff there seemed shocked to see us. We were told we would have to contact our sales rep in order to look at any samples. I contacted the sales rep with a few product questions and was told that the product we had chosen would not work for our pool. When I told her that other pool companies didn't have a problem with it I received a reply that really didn't make sense... At that point we decided that we didn't want to do business with this company. Their estimate was in the middle range of the quotes we received, but we were left with the feeling that they would not be easy to work with or to get in contact with. Our pool is now finished - by another company - and looks amazing - and we used the material that the Gardner rep said wouldn't work. I should also mention that in the 8 weeks from the time we first met with the sales rep until now, we never heard from her again to follow up. read more

Very poor service. We called for a pool remodel project and the guy who came out here, Josh , was the rudest , dissuading us from every remodel. He vetoed out every item except for cosmetic makeover of coping and tile. Looks like they are only interested in the light fluffy stuff and do not want to do any major work, quoting astronomical amounts for every other item and not even interested in giving a quote. Same yourself the time and do not call these people ever. I see the reply from "Mark". First off, we were never given a quote on anything except pool tile and coping replacement. We had never mentioned a budget amount but just let Josh the salesman know our requirements which he promptly began crossing out. His "I know it best" attitude reeked of condescension. We have since moved on to better contractors and have received favorable quotes. FYI, our budget was not limited to below 50000 as this guy put it across. Our 25 year old pool needed new plastering, tile, led lighting and seal because of the concrete separation over time. We had a re-design of tile on our fountain also. Every aspect was handled in a timely manner. They engineered the pool and we had a couple changes which they took care of without any hassles. I moved into a house in Mira Mesa that had a ratty old pool and spa that was in serious need of a resurfacing, retiling, new lights and new equipment. After doing a lot of research and fielding several quotes, I was torn between Pebbletech and fiberglass. I decided to go with pebbletech because while it has a lesser warranty, it looks better, feels better on the feet and generally lasts as long as fiberglass anyway. Pebbletech linked me up with Gardner and told me they would give me a good quote, and they did. Gardner fixed my coping, re-did the waterline tile, put down a PebbleSheen (Pebbletech) coating and installed new equipment and lights. They did an excellent job overall, the tile work was immaculate, and the PebbleSheen coating cured with easily and required minimal water rebalancing. I expected it to be a lot harder to take care of than it actually is. No major project is without a few problems. I don't believe a few issues negate a 5 star. Of the three issues I had, the first is that they didn't completely fix rust coming out of an old light fixture hole, and so there's a small more or less permanent rust stain on the bottom of my spa. Nothing too big, but it's enough to annoy me. The second is staining in my coping and deck. A red dye used on the coping cement stained my admittedly somewhat easy to stain bright beige deck ins reveal areas, and blue PebbleSheen dye and blue grout stains are also in my coping. Nothing major, but again annoying. The third was scheduling - there was one occasion where things went off schedule and took me several days to get a new schedule. I never really got any answer as to why, but it's neither here nor there. The work was done and I'm happy with it. Gardner also made up for these negatives with some significant positives I didn't ask for, such as being able to move my pool light switch to an ideal location. I would heartily recommend Gardner and I would use them again in the future. They have been around a long time and I figure they'll be around when I need to do this again in a few decades. read more

They did an AWFUL JOB!!!!! The day they left the plaster started to fall apart. They didn't lay the tiles on the interior correctly and had to come back 3 times to fix it. The seal fell apart and they had to fix that too. A year after the job was done the pool started to have holes in it and was leaking plaster. The owner tried to blame my pool guy who I've had for 20 years. I have had NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS with the pool since they did it. It looks TERRIBLE and I would DEFINITELY NOT recommend them. We needed to get our jacuzzi fixed as there was a crack. They came out on Tuesday, and tore the seating apart to fix the crack correctly...my daughter was having a couple of friends over on Friday. As soon as I told the person who came out about my daughters get together he made a number of calls and told me the latest everything would be completed was Friday morning and ready to use thereafter. Talk about pro service, someone who cared and promised me that he would keep an eye on everything to make sure it got done in time and correctly (and I'm sure he did). Thank You Chaz. Gardner did a great job replastering my pool. It looks terrific with Blue Granite PebbleSheen. They weren't cheap, in fact they were the most expensive choice but in this case I got what I paid for. I got two other bids (after interviewing 3 other companies). One of those was for a competing surface (WetEdge Pearl Matrix). They are very similar in look and feel. But go to the PebbleTec site and you get an easy to find history by clicking on "about," they've been in the US since 1988. Go to WetEdge and under "about" you get pictures of their people. At the bottom of that page they have a "resources" link but even that has no history. I could not locate a history on them anywhere on their site or on line. I discarded the company bid that was using that. The Gardener bid also included an option for other regular plaster. It would have been a considerable savings but we decided to upgrade from regular plaster to the PebbleTec. We chose Gardner over the other PebbleTec bidder based on referrals from a variety of sources including my local pool supply store, my pool guy and a friend who owns his own pool maintenance business. In addition to the pool work itself, Gardener helped us get in touch with additional services as needed. In our case we had to get some concrete work done and our tiles and stacked stone needed to be cleaned. Not only did they put me in touch with these companies, they adjusted their schedule so the companies could get their part of the job completed. I was pleased with all of their referrals. I felt that all involved went out of their way to make things work besides doing an excellent job. In the end my final cost was within 3.7% of their estimate. I expected things to change a bit as they demoed the old plaster and exposed potential problems. They actually deducted a planned repair that I had one of their recommended outside contractors do. They still had to add the cost of some needed repairs to the total. The last part of the process is the start up. I felt their start-up guy did a terrific job. Besides his usual routine he helped me troubleshoot an issue I noticed. Yes, overall this was a good experience! I highly recommend Gardner for your pool replastering. Sadly I had to change my 5 star review to 2 stars. Gardner came highly recommended by a friend . The salesman was great ( apparently not there anymore) 4 months after complete ..rebar started coming through and major stains appear on the bottom. See pictures .Call after call after call. It is not acceptable to me the way it is. I called the owner Scott out who was nice but not willing to budge . Seems there was no fix other than a re do. He also suggested pebble rec instead of plaster. I told him I was willing to pay the difference for the pebble tec ( he thought his salesman should have told me I would be much happier with pebble) so how about now? I was willing to pay the difference to re do it. NOPE the cost was so high!! He was obviously making big money off me... AGAIN He was obviously done with me. He should have broke even with me to make me happy. He lost many customers now. The original person won't use him, either will my designer. This company does fantastic work. They resurfaced my grandmothers pool about four years ago. The pool has looked amazing ever since. They laid beautiful brick along the edge, laid special sparkly stuff into the plaster, and when the sun hits it, the whole pool shimmers. The best part is the marble turtles that are enlayed on the bottom. It is really, really, beautiful. Unfortunately, when the pool was originally laid, the rebar was not deep enough and our pool developed a rust spot. :( since none mentioned it during the resurfacing, this company completely took responsibility for the issue, and graciously patched the spot for us. The customer service was not only excellent this time, but my grandmother has never had anything but great things to say of them. The guys that came out got along so good with her, that by day two of our patch job they showed up with a card for her, and she had coincidentally had hot muffins from the oven waiting for them. That type of thing is rarely seen from a company in today's world. I highly recommend them, and we in fact regularly have clients of theirs to the house to see the amazing work they do.. 5 stars all the way. read more

We are very happy with the remodel job Gardner Pool and Spa did on our pool. It started with a competitive job quote. Tom Cox, their pool specialist, made several trips to our home to drop off tile and finish samples as the office was closed due to covid. Once the job began, Saul had the work crew running like a well oiled machine. They were able to keep pretty close to their original schedule even tho several changes had to be made to the project due to the advanced age of our pool. I called to set up an appointment; i got 2 weeks appointment. On the day of appointment, their employee got sick and they couldn't send anyone else. The next appointment again is 2 weeks away. When calling them, no one picked up the phone. Waiting for call back took forever. It was too difficult to get in touch with them; maybe they are too busy and they dont need any more business. If it is this hard to get in touch, imagine how hard it will be after the completion of project and there is some issue. read more
