Very disappointed with Gargiulios. As a former Brooklyn restaurant, I thought that the food, service and treatment would be exemplary! Unfortunately, due to large number of people, 23, they put us in a back room even though we made reservations beforehand! Waiters ignored us, we had to get and distribute our own menus. No bread was on table and when it came, no seconds came back as other restaurants do! When a waiter showed up, the appetizers took an extraordinary long time to be served. As for the dinner, the waiter told us that they did not serve pizza which was for one of the kids. We later saw that pizza was served to a table in the outer real restaurant! For me, my Chicken Francese was dry with no sauce and lacked flavor, should have ordered the Chicken Parmigiana so sauce would have made it softer and palatable. There was a 25 percent mandatory gratuity charge when the bill came. May be that would have been warranted if the waiter really came back and served us, i.e. more drinks, etc. Gargiulo's did not live up to our expectations! If you go there with more than 6 people, stress that you don't want to be in a back room. It was expensive, considering the quality of the food and service! We dined here many years ago and had fond memories of the restaurant. We were in the neighborhood on a recent Sunday afternoon so we gave it a try for an early dinner. The ambience and service were still great but the food was terrible. My hot antipasto was re-heated. My wife's fried calamari was re-heated and served lukewarm. My grilled pork chop was uninspired and came with bland vegetables. The sauteed escarole was tough and tasteless. The place certainly has expanded since the last time I came here -- there is another room that was gorgeously remodeled and it had a sky window. It's great that the business is doing great, but today I certainly didn't feel their dish was worth another stay. I came in with a party of 11, the wait seems to be long for some reason. By the time we were seated we saw 7 tables empty...why did we have to wait so long for a table then if you have so many open tables to fit 3-7 more parties?? It makes no sense. They have a live musician playing too, looking carefully he really didn't play any of the notes, it was just prerecorded. if anything was authentic it was his singing. At least when the music was playing you could at least pretend to play the instrument to the music too. The menu was just the worst...just because it was mother's day we had a 3 course pre-fixed menu...meaning everyone has to order 1 appetizer, 1 entree, and 1 dessert for a fix price. And no you can't just pick one, you have to have all 3 for a whopping price of $55-$95 per person...PER PERSON I SAY. The food wasn't even good nor proportional to the price the meal cost. For a 3 course meal, I was still hungry. I had the Pennette Pasqualina (it was good, but i was promised there was prosciutto in there, must be very little b/c i didn't see any in the pasta), the Veal Marsala with Mushrooms, (this was shit, I could cook better than this in my kitchen), and Spumone (This was actually delicious! I loved it. The only best thing I had for the night. But I had a piece of the Mousse Cake from my mom...this was more like it was store bought...pretty disappointed). Not only that, they barely came back to refill our water pitcher! What?! are you mad, there's 11 people and you can't check up on us for water? How are you still in business?! Anyways, so the bill came... and it racked up to be ~$600. This was outrageous. No way I would come back again after this. The food quality and quantity were so poor, especially for a meal on mother's day, Take notes Gargiulo's, don't serve us a 1 star dish if you're gonna charge a 3 dollar sign priced tag, it leaves a bad taste in our month. My husband and I went there for my birthday and we were both disappointed, I had the veal parmigiana with vegetables and he had the chicken parmigiana with saghetti, both tasteless! If we didnt have the ceaser salad with some bread, and our favorite drink(amaretto sour), we would have both left on an empty stomach. For what we had, we do not recommend. Overpriced specially on Valentines day they double the prices, food wasn't that great and getting charged 35 dollars for a piece of steak and no side orders except a small potato crocket. Cavernous banquet hall type restaurant that specialized in Italian food ... For appetizers, we had the stuffed mushrooms (yum!) and the fish salad (not bad but we've had better) consisting of octopus, calamari, conch, shrimp, scungilli, celery, lemon juice and olive oil ... Our main courses consisted of the broiled chicken (a little bit dry) with a side salad and a flat iron steak (pretty good) with mashed potatoes and mixed veggies ... While Gargiulo's has a good reputation, dinner was average but the prices were reasonable ... my main complaint was that the waiter desperately needed to clean his jacket as the food stains on it have apparently long ago set in ... kinda gross! ... This place is definitely geared more to wedding receptions and events rather that those for the casual diner. read more

What a gem! In 10 years I've eaten here, I can't ever think of a less than stellar experience. The food is absolutely delicious. It's not the most cutting edge Italian menu on the planet (Babbo or Marea it's not), but they get by just fine producing solid classic fare. What sets them apart, however, is the stellar service. It's always nice to be greeted by any of the several waitstaff that I've seen there over the years. They are formal to the hilt but are never overbearing or snobbish. This Saturday we went to Gargulio's to celebrate my sister's birthday. My son, a police officer who was injured on the job had just had major surgery and was unable to put pants on over his brace. The owner told us he was unable to eat at his restaurant due to the dress code which does not allow shorts. There were at least 3 women who were wearing shorts, as well as a boy. All of them were welcomed and seated without comment. When I questioned him on this he said, shorts are the same thing as skirts. Therefore, women are allowed to wear them. Then he proceeded to say,(sarcastically)" If your son chose to wear a kilt, that would work." After a great deal of back and forth, we were seated in a back room, secluded from the rest of the patrons. We tried to make the best of it, but I will NEVER go back there again! THE WORST RESTURANT I HAVE BEEN TO IN YEARS. My family went there for lunch last friday. We were in the area and I had heard the food was good. The place looks nice but the ten old couples should have clued us in, even the maitre'd thought we were lost. The service was terrible. We looked at the menus, when the waiter returned I handed him the menus and asked if we could order, he said yes, then walked away from the table!!! It was laughable, he was gone over ten minutes. I ordered the penne ala vodka, when it came the sauce was an unusual color, I asked the waiter why and he informed me that to make their vodka sauce the chef merely mixed plain tomato with cream sauce. bleech. My sister in law ordered the ravioli, four of them were still frozen in the center, when she pointed it out to the waiter he told her she should have eaten the ravioli more quickly "when it was hot" it was ridiculous. I would just like to first point out that I would give it zero stars if that were an option. This weekend my husband and I went to Gargioulos for his aunts birthday. When the reservation was made we were not informed of the dress code. My husband had knee surgery recently and has a brace on his leg that extends from the upper part of his thigh all the way down to his ankle. He is not allowed to bend it and therefore putting on pants is impossible for him to do by himself, and just as impossible with the help of his wife who is 6 months pregnant. He put on a nice pair of khaki shorts and a button down shirt. Upon arrival we were told by an arrogant and rude man who ended up being the owner that shorts are not allowed in the dining room. He became belligerent and argued with us. He did not care that my husband just had surgery and was ignorant enough to say that if he could get shorts on surely pants would not have been a problem. Now I understand that Gargiulos is located one block off from the beach but there is a distinct difference between walking off the beach in board shorts and wearing khaki shorts and a button down shorts in the middle of summer. The ignorant owner of this establishment also proceeded to say that women are allowed to wear shorts because he wouldn't turn them away in a skirt so why should he turn them away in shorts. He went on to say that if my husband had worn an Irish Kilt he would have no problem. That seems illogical and further demonstrates just how ignorant and disrespectful this man is. It baffles me how he has run a business without falling on his face thus far. We finally did get seating after this ridiculous and unnecessary exchange. The food was not great. Describing it as average is a compliment. The only saving grace was our waiter who was a pefect gentleman. It goes without saying that we will not be returning to this establishment. Since my father happens to be a prominent businessman in this city, one who often goes to Christmas parties at this place I will make sure to pass this on to him. If your Christmas schedule gets a little thin this year maybe you will think twice about how you treat your customers and maybe you will learn to have respect for members of the NYPD who risk their lives everyday to keep this fine city safe. read more

I have hosted 4 parties at Gargiulo's in the past 4 years, ranging from 70-116 guests. Whether it was my retirement, my 70th birthday, a "friendship" party or this most recent one, to celebrate my completion of 5 months of physical rehab, the events could not have been better. The food is always spectacular--and this from a Neapolitan who LOVES eating! Beyond that, though, the concern of the Russo Brothers- which governs every aspect of every event, whether large or small- makes me feel each time like I'm a member of their family. The wait staff and bartenders are excellent- never overbearing, but always attentive enough to quickly care for every guest's need or desire. Lucy, the banquet manager, can read my mind, knows exactly what I want and makes menu and décor suggestions that have taken every party to the next level! My guests have been waddling out the door at the end of each of my parties, filled with both huge amounts of great food and happy memories of wonderful nights spent dining with friends. I have been to gargiulos many times. however, i have found that the menu has changed and many of the old standbys no longer exist. they used to have fabulous lasgna and manicotta. I wonder if they disappeared because they weren't bit dollar items.. the food lately is not something i would write home about.. it was okay.. definitely not great. the service was beyond slow.. i suspect they didn't have enough staff... it was amost as if the waiter disappeared into the great beyond.. at times he diefiniely forgot about us. Located in the heart of Coney island; the restaurant has recently been renovated and it looks better than ever. Have had several parties at this wonderful establishment and I plan on hosting more. I just had my engagement dinner this past weekend and everything was top notch. The owners take pride and the show it with the service that they provide. The food is wonderful as always. I'm surprised when I read negative reviews because I have had great experiences and great memories to cherish from here. It truly is a diamond in the rough. Wife(pregnant) and I flew in from Japan to celebrate my grandmothers 90th birthday(group party). Everything was good until the end. I deliberately left half my food (steak) to take home because I was the one to drive my wife, mother, and grandmother back home which was an 1.5 hour drive and I knew with the big meal and jet lag (flew in from JAPAN) would of caused issues. The wife also did not finish her meal and wanted a to go box. The rest of the family had their meals boxed in front of them and my wife had noticed ours being taken away (I left the table to take pictures) after I had asked it to be boxed up. when I asked the waiter where our food was he said they took it by mistake and he would prepare a new meal for the both of us! 20-30 minutes pass and he comes back apologizes once again for the mistake and I thank him graciously without checking the contents. Fast forward to 10pm and the wife and I want to finish our meal and to our surprise it's our leftovers... assume the worst! It's a shame because this was my grandmother favorite restaurant and she has stories for days about it and the family which she loves. read more

I went back after the restaurant reopened after hurricane Sandy. I had a bad experience in the catering hall but decided to give the restaurant a try. Upon walking in the front bar and lobster tank are a mere memory and are now partitioned by fake walls. It kind of looks like a Dr.'s office. Sat down with a group of friends and was handed the menu by our waiter. I was agog when I looked at it. They are charging Manhattan prices for Coney Island. Are they aware that I passed 4 homeless men on the drive in! We ordered fried calamari which were alright but to salty and oily. I had the chicken Parm and I've had better at pizza places. Well in all the years I have heard of this place but never made it to here. Went to a business lunch today with two others. Decor is simple but elegant. We were seated right away and had a very attentive waiter. I ordered the minestrone soup and with the mushroom risotto, while the others had the clam appetizer, chicken Luigi and snapper. To end it all we had espresso. Everything was spot on right down to one of the owners stopping at the table to check on us. My only real regret is not eating here earlier. read more

I called Gargiulo's several weeks ago to set up a time to see the party room, for my son's bar mitzvah, which I'm planning for next May. The woman said that I could come in any Monday-Thursday up until 9pm. I decided to go one evening when I was free, and called ahead. The man on the phone (didn't tell me his name) told me that it was too late that evening (I called about 8:30 pm and I was already around the corner from the place)..he wanted to go home..it was a long day...and I should come in another night. He suggested that I look on the website for pricing, and call another day in the future to set up an appointment. I was turned off to the place at that point, but willing to give it another try being that they supposedly have a good reputation. Well, I called tonight again, and the woman on the phone said I could come in up until 9pm. I arrived at 8:30 and was greeted by the same man that I had previously spoken to on the phone (I happened to recognize his voice)....He looked disheveled, was extremely unfriendly, and had a very poor attitude. I told him that I was there to see the party room, and I had called ahead of time. He said that the room was not available to view because he had "150 priests in there for an event". He went on to say, that he could not let us in to view the room while the priests were in there, because "the way we were dressed" was not appropriate for that. He repeatedly insulted us by talking about the way we were dressed (in casual attire, for a 90 degree summer evening). I asked whether I could just peek into the room, without walking through it, and he refused. He walked away for a moment to get us a brochure, and when he returned he said "and also, we don't do Sweet 16's on Saturday nights". I told him that were interested in doing a barmitzvah, and not a Sweet 16. I took the brochure, and on the way out,called him an "a$$ho*e, because that's exactly the type of person he was acting like. I have never been so insulted before. And this was coming from a man who was sweating profusely, sloppily dressed, and made a very poor, and UNAPPETIZING, appearance. My family and I walked into the parking lot, got into the car, and realized that we were followed out by this man. He came over to me, and I actually thought he was going to apologize for his rude behavior. Instead, he had the audacity to ask for his brochure back. He said that after I called him an a$$ho*e, he would never do a party for me. I told him that's fine, because I would never have a party there after my experience. I then told him, that he should spruce himself up before greeting customers, because he is a sloppy, sweaty, and rude man. Very bad for business. I don't know if he is one of the owners, because I find it very hard to believe that someone would actually hire him as a salesman. He had a very cocky attitude, and didn't care one way or the other if he lost business or not. This place may be here for many years, but just like the old saying "nothing lasts forever"....and if this is the way you choose to do business, eventually it will catch up to you. I Give this Restaurant 3 stars because of the service. The food was great, but the host and hostess came across a bit racist. When we arrived they seemed to be taken of guard when we walked in, the host asked "Can I help you with something?" As if I was lost and stumbled into their restaurant. I told her we had a reservation for 3, it was girls night. When they seated us, we were brought to the back far left corner to a table that wasn't set yet. Mind you the restaurant is empty and has about 30 tables already set with China and a small boutique of flowers, our table was bare. The food is good the waiter eventually warmed up when he realized we had class but the overall experience was very off putting and shocking. If your a Minority STAY AWAY!! This restaurant is a hidden gem in Coney Island. My wife and I came here on our first date 6 years ago and have been coming back frequently ever since. The one thing that many restaurants fail to master is consistency. Usually most of the restaurants that I frequent will have an off night where the service is off our the food is sub par. I've had excellent food and service everytime I've been here. The portions are generous and all of the food is cooked to perfection. The staff is also very hospitable and the owner Anthony is usually the first one to greet you when you arrive. I came here with my boyfriend for a Christmas party. I must say my experience was great. The staff is sweet, attentive and friendly. The food wasn't anything incredible if it were ordered, but for a buffet style event I found it to be good. Coat check was fast and attentive as well as the valet. Other then the beautiful atmosphere, my favorite was the subtle heated lamps in the entrance where you smoke cigarettes and wait for valet to bring you your car. I had heard about Gargiulo's for years and was thrilled to finally try it. This place is overrated. The Chicken Francese was in a brownish sauce that just wasn't good, so I tried different entrees on subsequent visits but never really found anything great.
