When you call Garvin's you get a cheerful bot who answers the phone with the catchphrase of "We clean out sewers, not bank accounts!" Well. My experience is ironic, then, yes? I was recommended to contact Garvin's by Groundworks, a company that strives very hard to do an excellent job for their customers. See, Groundworks had done some major uplifting of a broken basement wall, due to freezing, and they installed multiple steel I-beams to shore up the wall, then inserted epoxy into the cracks to finish the job. "Lou," a tech told me. "Upon finishing the work, we did a survey of the rest of the house and found that there's some concerning settling at the front part of the home. The north end. You need to get a water intrusion company to check that out. We don't do that." "Great," I sighed. "Who do you recommend?" "Garvin's." So, I called Garvin's, got the aforementioned bot with the promise not to clean out my bank account, and told the kind lady that I needed an expert in water intrusion. "Do you do that?" "We do!" she said. "I can have a tech out tomorrow!" "Um," I replied. "This is a long-standing issue. There aren't any pipes spurting water. It's not THAT urgent." "No worries, would you like a tech tomorrow anyway?" "That would be great!" The tech arrived the next day and called me. "Mr. Berger, I looked in the crawl space and there is water there, but no plumbing. So I don't know what you want me to do." "Oh," I said, taken aback. "I want you to find out where that water is coming from! That's why I hired you!" "No," he insisted. "We are plumbers. We only work on pipes." "Well, can you check with your supervisors? I was told, when I asked, that Garvin's does water intrusion detection." "Sure. In the meantime, I did notice soft drywall on the ceiling basement, which is wet." That was a slow leak when the not-often-used powder room on the first floor gets flushed. The leak was new to me, so when he asked me if he could cut into the drywall to determine the source, I agreed. He called back while I was on a conference call, didn't leave any voicemails, and when I got a phone call from their office manager, I had just hung up with the conference call. Long story short, the toilet needs a new wax ring and the shutoff valve for the toilet is old and no longer functional. The quote was $850, but I could have a $100 coupon discount if I agreed. "Send me the quote," I said. "That sounds a bit high to replace a wax ring, an intake valve, and the innards of the toilet tank. I could buy a new toilet entirely and replace it for that much." They sent me a quote and then, here's the point of the review, billed me $661, which they immediately processed against my credit card. What did they do? They poked a hole in sodden drywall, determined that a wax ring was needed, and repaired nothing. This review is 2 stars because they have the legal right to bill me for the two hours that it took while the tech awaited the ability to talk to me. The review is 2 stars because charging me $661 feels punitive in that I didn't meet the tech's expectation of availability and the company's willingness to, yes, clean out my bank account. I don't want a refund. I want everybody to know how Garvin's treats people. Like free bank accounts, withdrawal only. read more

I am a board member at a 148 unit HOA with tons of aging plumbing on the property. When I joined the board we had corporate plumbers who were gouging and taking advantage of our community. We interviewed over 8 different plumbing companies before we decided to work with Garvin's. The first time they fixed a leak it was not only clear they were more experienced and better equipped but also less expensive. Thankfully we built a relationship with Garvin's because a year later we had a water main break and we had to have their excavation crew come out and fix the break. They were super responsive and were on site within 10 minutes or less with a quote soon after. As an HOA we had to get multiple quotes all the other quotes were 3-5x the price of Garvin's quote and they were not responsive. There is a reason Garvin's is the oldest family owned plumbing business in Denver they take care of their customers and their community. Dennis from Garvin's showed up on time and got right to work. I should also mention that scheduling was an absolute breeze. Dennis got the job done and was pleasant enough. There was one major negative. Dennis got fingerprints and dirt all over our freshly painted walls going down to the basement. He did lay carpet down, but then proceeded to Get grimy dirt marks all the way up and down the stairs and in the bathroom where our toilet was located. Very disappointed with his cleanliness or lack there of. maybe wearing some gloves would have been helpful, especially if he changed them during his visit. That didn't happen and it took me two hours to clean up after him. I still can't remove all of the grimy marks that he made. read more

We had some problems with our toilet on the main floor. It would not flush properly. We contacted Garvin Sewer Service to see if they could send Jon Mac to come help us. We had used his service once before and he was very good. Besides, he lives in the same town as us. Jon not only showed up promptly but a few minutes early. We hate to wait for repair men, don't you? It only took him about 10 minutes to diagnose the problem and repair it. And because it did not take a long time, it did not cost us much out of pocket. I contacted Garvins to inquire about getting my kitchen sink drain opened up. I mentioned that I had tried all the "amateur" methods and was unsuccessful. They sent someone out and I was advised that it would cost $221. I agreed, the work was performed, and he handed me a tablet to authorize my credit card for $221. When I received the email receipt an hour later, the charge was now $285. When I asked why I was told it was because I had "used chemicals". This fee was never mentioned or alluded to during the entire transaction because I might have objected to spending just under $300 to clear a sink drain. I pointed out that it was not ethical to add a charge after the card has been signed but my protests were ignored. Not the integrity nor honesty that I had expected. read more

We have a 1926 house in Baker. We have a basement shower that has no "P-trap" and so sewer smell overwhelms the basement. We need someone to jackhammer the basin and install a p trap ($10 K at least)? We also have a kitchen sink main drain that is broken and needs a grease trap by-pass to the main sewer line however this means cutting through a concrete patio to get to the pipes (about a $20K job?). We have nearly $30K of business. We had one guy come over and look at both problems and he said he was sending his colleague over to scope the sink and give us an estimate on everything but that guy never showed up or called and neither did the first guy. I guess they have so much business that a $30K job is not of interest to them? Either that or they were offended by my gay flag and other anti Trump yard sign and decided not to follow through? In either case, it is unprofessional and we will call another provider. read more

I'm pretty disappointed in Garvin's plumbing. It used to be my go-to for helping snake the drains in my 1960's home. The last two services were my last straw. One of the last two services someone ruptured my bathtub pipe, and caused flooding in the basement. The very last service they failed to tell me how the prices went up when I booked over the phone. When the plumber came over is when I found out how high the prices were-- and they are shockingly higher than I have ever paid. So I took the day off to get the sink snaked for nothing, because I had to cancel on the spot due to the surprise price increase. I hope this business is able to go back to their original customer service and pricing. For now, save your time and money. read more

We had a leaking pipe from my kids' bathtub but couldn't fix it myself and was recommended (by a friend) to have Gavin's come out and take a look. James came out, assessed the situation and ran through all of my options. Not only did he explain everything in great detail, he also showed me the pricing and was able to SAVE me a some money in the process. He did exactly what he said he was going to do, and ultimately didn't need to do anything extra that we initially thought he was going to have to do.
