They were part of a quote request through yelp for a repair/replacement of a bad install of a tub faucet (stuck on with a sharkbite :-/ ) Response was quick and was able to get Michael out for a quote within a couple days and the work done a couple day after that, in a quick manner. Out of the 6 quotes I got, their price landed on par with others. While it upset me that on the day of the work that they were late (due between 11-1, arrived close to 4) due to a previous call (which I understand and wouldn't want them to rush that job, or rush mine . . . it just put me on edge all day on when they would arrive - 20 minutes? An hour? Something to keep in mind if you have to take time off work.) I appreciated Michael's professionalism, knowledge, and, care for the quote and work he did (ex: During the quote, he explained how he'd perform the work with a tool to avoid damage to other plumbing components, and for the work he picked a part and explained intentionally why he had due it being the only part that was not all plastic, so it would last longer). With a name like Hero Plumbing & Drains, I figured someone was coming to rescue me from my perpetually running toilet. Turns out the only thing that needed rescuing was me from Hero Plumbing & Drains. Mike came to my condo last Friday, looked at my toilet and quoted me around $345. He told me he needed to order the parts. I gave him the days I was available, and about 40 minutes after leaving, he CALLED ME and said he'd ordered them, they should arrive the following week, and he'd contact me to schedule the repair. Almost a week passed. Nothing. I texted Mike Wednesday asking for an update. No response. So Thursday I contacted the company. This is where my toilet repair became an episode of The Twilight Zone. I was told that wasn't actually the conversation Mike and I had. Interesting, considering there were exactly two people involved in that conversation, and the person telling me this wasn't one of them. Then the owner, Matt, called. I assumed an owner personally calling meant, "Sorry about the confusion. Let's figure this out." Adorable assumption on my part. According to Matt, Mike said he actually HAD the parts in his van that day and that I told him I wanted two more estimates before deciding. Except...no. Had Mike told me he could fix my toilet immediately, I would've said GREAT, PLEASE FIX MY TOILET. Instead, he specifically told me he needed to order the parts and then CALLED ME afterward to say he'd ordered them. So either I hallucinated an incredibly specific plumbing conversation AND follow-up phone call, or somewhere along the way there was a miscommunication. Rather than acknowledge that possibility, Matt told me Mike is one of his best employees and gets lots of great reviews. Cool. I'm happy for Mike and his fan club, but I'm reviewing MY experience. Eventually Matt admitted Mike is human and makes mistakes, saying he's great "99% of the time" and I guess I'm the 1% where he messed up. THANK YOU. WE HAVE ARRIVED. Our hero's journey is complete. But somehow it got weirder. Matt questioned why I didn't have the written estimate and how I knew everything I was telling him when it had been verbal. Then came my favorite line: "Verbal doesn't mean anything." Sir. YOUR EMPLOYEE VERBALLY TOLD ME ALL OF THIS. At this point, my toilet wasn't the only thing running. Logic had left the building at full speed. Matt emailed me the estimate himself and suggested maybe Mike had my wrong email address. Except Matt's email arrived perfectly. Apparently my email address had also joined the conspiracy. Matt then asked if I still wanted the repair and whether I wanted Mike to do it. Absolutely not. Our versions of reality were already experiencing irreconcilable differences. Matt said HE would do it because he's the one who handles "disgruntled customers." When I questioned being called disgruntled, I was treated to a definition of the word. Thank goodness. I was worried I'd leave this experience with a broken toilet AND an inadequate vocabulary. Then Matt said once I accepted the estimate we'd be "bound by contract." I asked what that meant because I wanted to know whether accepting it created any cancellation obligation. Rather than simply answering, he asked if I'd ever had work performed at my house before. Yes, Matt. I have encountered both contractors AND the English language previously. When I clarified that I wanted to know whether I'd be charged for canceling, he asked if they had my credit card. No. "Then how would we charge you?" Thank you, Professor Plumbing. Class dismissed. I canceled and found another plumber who is doing the repair for roughly $100 less. The original miscommunication wasn't even my biggest problem. Mistakes happen. What matters is how a company handles them. Matt had the opportunity to say, "Clearly something got crossed somewhere. Sorry you were waiting for a call that never came. Let's fix it." Instead, I got an argument about whose version of a conversation was correct, a character reference for his employee, the revelation that "verbal doesn't mean anything," statistics on how rarely his employee makes mistakes, the definition of "disgruntled," and a condescending lesson on service contracts. All because I wanted my toilet to stop running. So unfortunately, there were no heroes in this story. Turns out not all heroes wear capes. Some apparently just give vocabulary lessons. read more

They showed up the following day (early) and were able to replace my water pressure valve that same afternoon. He even went to the effort of removing a broken valve and replacing it with straight copper pipe at no additional cost. The price quoted is what I paid even though he had to stay an extra 45 minutes because my water wouldn't fully shutoff from the street making soldering the pipe difficult. The previous homeowner piecemealed the toilets in the house and we were left with a Brady Bunch variety of toilets. We don't have a lot of bathrooms but slowly over time we could tell each toilet was like a kid: They had their own distinct personalities. We pride ourselves on upkeep and cleanliness and a number of years into ownership we realized these toilets needed to be serviced and/or replaced. During the initial walkthrough from each plumber they offered to fix/service a number of our toilets. Enter Matthew. Upbeat, down to earth and super thorough. On the toilets the other plumbers offered to fix and/or service, Matthew told us replacing the toilets would be cheaper altogether and even told us both prices. He even mentioned that if the toilets were services they would need repairs soon after so we went with his recommendation to replace them. He was so thorough that after the job was done he still insisted on a walkthrough to show the quality of workmanship. Honest, punctual and masterful is what comes to mind. I made a lot of phone calls to this company and they (shoutout to Saul) were super patient with me- taking the time to explain things in detail to me and being honest. I met Eddie, one of the co brother owners and one of the plumbers, and he took the time to come out to my property to chat with me in person about my issue. He gave me his honest assessment as well. In the end, I ended up not repairing my sewer line and instead getting it cleaned by this company. Unfortunately, they were unable to get their camera through my sewer line without removing the toilet but their rooter was able to go through to the end of my line so hopefully it's clean! Michael came out and gave both the free estimate and then returned to do the work once we accepted the bid. He arrived promptly around the times I was told by text message in the morning beforehand. Hero Plumbing replaced a broken spigot and added an additional spigot to our back yard, which had none. Although I had another estimate that was slightly less, I went with Hero because they listened to my description of what I needed and came up with a workable solution for the back yard (since I only need the back spigot during summer they were able to perform a less costly installation off my existing sprinkler supply pipe rather than run a new line through the house). Michael also pointed out there were leaves in the wall near where the leaking spigot was replaced. This helped me figure out that there was a hole in the wall near the spigot, hidden behind my electrical conduit, which is what let cold air in to damage my freeze resistant spigot. The new spigot is a high quality freeze resistant style as well, but I'll get the hole filled in before cold weather comes back. I'm happy that the work done was done in a timely manner and was tested thoroughly afterward. There was a small leak due to a defective part in the added spigot, but Michael was able to get a new part quickly and rebuild the new section of piping. Now everything is working great. read more

Matthew was a rock star! He showed up right on time and installed the US Water under-sink reverse osmosis (RO) system at my parents' house. It was the only one that we could find that was made in the states. I am sooooo glad that I didn't try to do this myself and went with a smaller family run business like Hero. It took him 3.5 hours! If I had tried it...eeeek...it would have taken me a weekend or more. It turns out that uncoupling 15 year old pipes that aren't leaking doesn't mean that everything will fit back together (after all of the rust and buildup have been removed) and not leak. To Matthew, it was water off a duck's back. He took care of everything. Matthew wore shoe sleeves/covers? to keep the floors clean, put down a drop cloth to protect the floor and cabinet, put the hose trimmings, part wrappers, etc in a trash bag, checked the system for leaks, and ran through everything with me before he left. Oh, and he was super cool and hauled off the big honking box that the RO system came in too. To say I would recommend him and Hero is an understatement. They were awesome, and we (myself and the Hong Kong Food Snob) would ask them to save our tofurkey (bacon for you meat eaters) anytime. read more

I had a terrific experience with Hero Plumbing. Plumbing is not an industry that has the greatest reputation for honesty and pricing. Hero is 5 stars on both counts. I had them come out for a free estimate to look at a leak that I suspected, correctly, was coming from the tub in the master bath. They gave me a $700 plus estimate. When they came out, it turned out the source was something much simpler. Michael was in my home for 3 hours and ran to Home Depot to get a part and charged me $170 total. That was above and beyond if you ask me. I will never use a plumber besides Hero from now on. Part of why I wrote this is that in three years or so when I have a plumbing need, I do not have to wrack my old brain to remember them. We recently discovered that one of our outdoor spigot had failed and caused us to have a leak that went unnoticed. Luckily for us Denver water noticed the jump in usage and came out to reread the meter. We found the leak and called Hero Plumbing for help. Matthew managed to squeeze us in the next day and even came earlier then expected. Hero Plumbing completed all the repairs and cleaned up after themselves. I hired Matt to install our new tankless water heater, and remove our old tank style unit. I had gotten a total of four quotes, 2 from big name plumbers and two from more local companies. The two big box plumbers were astronomical for price. One company quoted 9k if I bought the unit. The second company quoted 7k. Matt, and the other smaller company were very close on price. I chose Matt because he was a Master certified plumber and didn't try to sell me on unnecessary costs. Even though he was slightly higher, I was happy knowing he was very knowledgeable, and installing the supplied unit right the first time.
