I stopped in to experience their soul food and to see other items they have. I love a market that you can find nostalgic food items. I was excited to see their deli area with all of the meats and cheeses that we would get sliced back in the day and enjoy. They had everything from rag bologna, goose liver, liver cheese, lunch meat, and so much more! They also had the frozen meats that my husband likes to cook for Sunday dinner. Turkey necks, neckbones, turkey wings, etc. They have it all and at a good price. Now on to the food...although they were extremely packed they remain friendly and gave good service to every customer. They have a variety of options. We purchased two meals. We went with the smothered pork chops, cabbage, and spaghetti for one meal and turkey necks, mac and cheese, and greens for the second meal. The portions are huge! Gary's at one time had great food. Not today. They wasted the salt on everything, to the point I could not eat it. The turkey was burned and dry. I will try them again in a few months with the hopes of improvement. Stop poisoning us with the salt. read more

The food is truly down home soulful southern home cooked delicious food! But the Mac & Cheese today was disgusting! I was too tired to return it. It tasted like someone put vinegar in it. I LOVE going to Gary's to pick up a plate or two. I was recommended by a friend to this place. Location wise, I never knew it was there because I never go down there and wouldn't drive through there at night, but for lunch or early dinner pick up DURING THE DAY, that I can do. The service has always been good to me. The ladies are nice. The atmosphere is, well, it's a corner store with a hot food area.....it is what it is. I highly recommend the fried pork chops, greens, yams, dressing, and fried catfish. Anything else I can't call it. Lines are long during lunchtime, so it is best to go between 10:30am and 11am or after 1p. Otherwise, you will be in a long line. read more

My family ordered dressing for Mother's Day which we had before. However, we had trouble with the getting our order. After calling two weeks in advance and then the day before, the dressing was not ready. I was told to come back on Saturday and it was not ready. Apparently, the person that answers the phone is the problem. I believe his name is Charlie. I know from calling three times that Charlie is very unprofessional. He is answering the telephone while waiting on customers in front of him. However, he is not doing it professionally. He is screaming and using profanity on the phone, while I am saying "Hello" several times. Charlie, I hope you read this critique. You need to go to etiquette classes. The proper way is to answer the telephone and tell the person to "Please Hold" and then you tend to the person in front of you. I know this is a grocery store; however, people can stop ordering because of you. I was advised to speak with the Kitchen Manager or Kitchen worker. I will never speak with Charlie again. Smothered pork chops... Breakfast potatoes... Grits... Greens... Cabbage... Smothered chicken... Listen, I love Gary's. This is soul food at it's finest! Tender and juicy pork chops and breakfast potatoes that will make you slap somebody, okay? The area is dodgy, but seemingly safe. I always send my husband to go since he grew up in that area. I wouldn't go at night or even in the evenings lol. But you can't beat it for breakfast or lunch. They are definitely a hidden gem. read more

I heard about Gary's while making a visit to the Grizzlies Center on Ketchum and talking to one of the preachers who has moved back to the neighborhood he grew up in to give back to the community and reclaim the neighborhood. I listened to his conversation with with the mother of a young boy who also lived in the area and was signing up for a summer program. They both had "Gary's" in common. They went on and on about how great the food is and what large portions you get for your money. For those who are not familiar with Memphis I will just say this neighborhood is as tough as it gets. There is a Section 8 apartment complex just a block south which is fenced in and has wire around the perimeter. You will commonly see gang members walking around in this area. I arrived around 12:30 and Gary's had several cars in the parking lot. Gary's would best be described as a country store or sundry. They have your usual grocery items and a line had formed for the takeout counter where there were 3 - 4 people taking orders, packaging the to go meals. I asked for white meat chicken, cabbage, butter beans, and I received a slab of corn bread. The lunches are carefully packed with several layers of saran wrap so nothing drips. You can tell they have this down to a science. The employees were very friendly and thanked me for my business. After paying and leaving the store I arrived at my final destination and sat down to eat my lunch. After opening the package I had 3 piecies of fried chicken, with servings of vegetables that would be 2-3 times the quantity you would receive at a cafeteria for example. The vegetables were well seasoned, the chicken was good, and all for $6.50! This is not fine dining but just good Memphis soul food that workers and members of the community know about and go to frequently to get their lunch to go. I believe they have chitterlings on one day so I will make it back to try those. A colleague at work told me that the pork chop sandwich is a favorite of her husbands. read more

I work part time at the Memphis International Airport and have eaten many many times in my eight years while working there and still do. The staff and food are awesome. Todd is always a joy to visit with and catch up on the latest news. The spices that are put in each dish is what makes Gary's so different.
