This is long overdue. A little over a month ago, my wife and I were headed to Southern California for a memorial. We were staying in town and when I changed to go to dinner I realized I did not pack my pants for the memorial which was the following day. I called Garys roughly 30 minutes prior to their closing for the night and a nice associate answered, I wish I could remember his name because he was great! I explained my dilemma and I said I wear a 34 in a particular brand. He replied with, "no problem, I'll set aside two pairs of pants with your name. Be here at 10:00am and we can probably have our tailor hem them for you in no time!" You've got to be kidding was my thought! We headed to Gary's at 10:00am, the pants were laid out with my name and Todd was there ready to help. Todd was extremely helpful, got me fitted right away and helped with some other items that I didn't need but could live without! 20or so minutes later I had pants!!! I really don't know many places that can offer that sort of drop of the hat service; but Gary's did and I am very appreciative. Todd and Co. thank you for the great service! Went into Gary's a few weeks back needing suits for a corporate trip and figured it was time to get some expert help. Michael absolutely delivered. I told him what I was looking for, and he quickly pulled together several great options -- all better than I expected. Go to Gary's and see Craig Nakada for all of your men's suits and mens furnishing needs- you will thank me later. I have been a client of Craig's for over 13 years. He is very professional, knowledgeable, and overall a first class and consummate gentleman. ANY self respecting man will buy their suits and everything they need at Gary's. Their selection is fantastic and they carry lines that most stores do not. You'd probably have to go north to Sausalito (gene hiller) for the good stuff- that's if you don't shop at Gary's! We are lucky to have such a fine establishment for all of our men's suits/furnishing needs. Everything is priced reasonably. You get what you pay for, and that is a quality product and a first class experience. If you want cabin class, this place isn't for you. Shop at Gary's if you consider yourself a man with good taste or if want your man to look dashing and debonair like Cary Grant and Humphrey Bogart. I have been working with Joe Vasco for well over a decade now. I'm surprised I haven't written a review yet. Over the years, he's been consistent with helping me pick out great pieces and stay somewhat current with the ever evolving Newport trends. Gary's has a great selection and Joe knows where all the good stuff hidden in the back is. You pay the same price that you would add a larger department store, but get extremely customized service. Find Joe and establish a relationship with him and you'll have a personal shopper and friend for the rest of your life.... or at least until he retires, he's getting old ;) read more

I see a lot of similar negative reviews. I want to share feedback regarding my recent visit to your Newport Beach store last Sunday. I was there with one of my sales directors visiting from our London office, and we were looking at blazers. While we had seen some options at Nordstrom, I suggested we also visit Garys. Our experience in the suit section with a sales associate named Nabil was unfortunately quite unpleasant. When we inquired about non-Italian made blazers to accommodate my colleague's budget, Nabil's initial response came across as unwelcoming. He then showed us a Canali blazer, which is also made in Italy, despite our expressed preference. We had just seen that brand at Nordstrom and were not interested. We attempted to continue browsing the store, but Nabil began to follow us closely throughout the store. (I would suggest reviewing security footage to verify this.) He later brought over another blazer that my friend was considering. When my friend asked for my opinion, Nabil interjected with a very condescending tone, asking me, "Can I ask you something? Are you a stylist? Have you worked in retail? I'm the professional here..." The Funny thing is that he's the worst dressed person in the entire newport beach fashion center. Can't even wear a right sized suit! I was quite taken aback by this attitude. As a frequent customer at stores such as Zegna, Berluti, and Brunello Cucinelli, I have never encountered this type of behavior. I had always considered Garys to be a store of similar caliber, and this level of salesmanship was truly disappointing and uncalled for. read more

There's a salesman that'll be all over you like a used car lot! There's also a small portion of the store that's actually fashionable, the other stuff is the same clothing they've had for years and won't move on from. Hard to have up to date fashion when they won't move on from designers who's clothing was hot 10-15 years ago. This Men's store has lost touch with today's fashion, it needs a major fashion makeover. My company's expensing for several new suits and suggested I go to Garys Newport Beach at Fashion Island. I had a couple shirts that needed minor alterations so I called Garys yesterday and spoke with the Tailoring deportment to see what they could do. The Tailoring department informed me it should not be a problem, come into the store, pick out the suits, and they will deal with all my tailoring needs. I arrive at the store today and spoke with a sales representative who right away asked about the shirts I had in my hand. Before I could say much he instantly made a 'Cooking cabbage face' followed by a hiss. I asked him what the problem was and he said, "GARYS does not do any outside alterations." I informed him I called Garys yesterday and confused why I was not told about this policy over the phone. To which the sales rep made another 'cooking cabbage face' followed by a hiss. At this point I told him, "Look, if all I'm going to get from you is a smelling shit-face instead of assistance, I'll take my business elsewhere." he replied OK, I thanked him, and walked out the door. I have informed our company executives of what happened, (all had a good laugh) and then presented me several other names/phone numbers businesses to try out who are more professional. Been coming here for years whenever my travels take me to this part of the world. Upscale men's clothier with some of the best designers. Excellent selection of casual including Nat Nast and the shoes, oh the shoes...Holy Moley. For a shoe guy, this is Nirvana for non-bespoke shoes. They change their inventory regularly, they have awesome casual clothing and their staff will move heaven and earth to ding you the best threads. They have a wonderful selection of socks and accessories, plus they are not in a hurry to sell you something you don't want. The leather goods are particularly noteworthy as Larry defies you to find a better selection of outerwear anywhere. Love this place and their team goes the extra Mile for service. Yay. read more

They have you covered from head to toe and you will definitely walk out with the perfect outfit from the help of the friendly staff. I love this store. Old world charm with all the new brands and designers. I'm sure the sales staff could tell right away that I'm not a wealthy person but I was treated like a king. I wanted to buy a nice suit and price was a consideration. I never felt that the person helping me was trying to upsell me while showing me items in my price range. I settled on a nice suit that fit well BUT it was the tailoring that made a nice suit a great suit. I worry that places like GARYS will be harder to find in the future. They sell Alden Shoes. That should tell you right there - this place is special. The man in the shoe department was impressed with my shoe knowledge and was super efficient in anticipating my needs. I understand there are two Gary's locations - one in Fashion Island in Newport Beach, and a second Gary's location in Old Town Tustin. I don't live near Tustin, and I am rarely in Tustin, but I was there recently for a meeting and stopped into Gary's and bought my husband a Robert Graham designer shirt that I fell in love with! Unfortunately, the shirt was too small, so since I work in Newport Beach, I thought I would take it to Gary's Fashion Island for an exchange or refund. I was promptly told that Gary's Newport Beach does NOT accept exchanges for purchases from Gary's Tustin. I asked if they were the same store, and was told yes, they are the same company but they won't accept returns from the Tustin store. The associates in Gary's Fashion Island are uptight old geezers. Well Gary's Newport Beach, your customer service sucks and your employees portray a very snooty and condescending attitude. You'll never achieve customer satisfaction with your elitist attitude and unfriendly policies regarding exchanges or returns. read more

Just walked in, had Corny help me find two gorgeous pairs of slacks, and the tailor measure me on the spot, and walked out within 15 minutes. At the same time I never felt in a rush. Corny simply understood exactly what I wanted in terms of fit and color immediately (not at all the case with Neiman's or Bloomy's staff) and their tailor was always on hand. Gary's doesn't stock too many brands or styles - just the the ones you want for any occasion. I look forward to coming back many times! read more

I went to Gary's a few weeks back and had the worst experience. I've never had the best service, but after this last time I will never step foot in the store again. I needed to buy my husband some clothes. I like to walk the stores first before asking for help. When I did finally ask for help the salesman said he'd help find me some outfits. When I asked to see if he had anything, he dropped a few things off very dismissive and said he was helping someone else-please note that he wasn't helping anyone else when when he first agreed to help me. I was so put off that I left the store so annoyed and sick to my stomach. How can people one treat other people like this and two when it's your job to be helpful! After I left, I went to Neiman Marcus, where I have someone I shop with on a regular basis-who is always friendly and willing to help. After all is said and done-I left with 5 dress shirts, 2 dress slacks, 2 dress shoes, and a bunch of t-shirts-Thank you Neiman Marcus for always being amazing. read more

I walked in here not really expecting to buy anything. I quickly found a jacket that I really liked and a salesman quickly appeared by my side as I was trying it on. I decided that I liked it and he gave me a larger discount than listed because he wanted to sell it. That was nice, but it kinda felt like I was purchasing a used car (something I've never done before, but we've all heard the stories). I have bought a number of suits, sweaters, and sports coats at Garys over the years. They have amazing quality and amazing service. It should be noted that the clothing is very expensive, but you get what you pay for. If you shop their regularly, the sales associates will call you when they think they have something that will suit your tastes or before a big sale. They do a very good job of getting to know their regular clientele and it can be really helpful if you are not a person who loves to spend hours shopping. read more

One of my worst experiences in a men's store, a store that tries to pride itself on men's fashion and being a modern day haberdashery it is far from this. The store is more like a used car sales lot. I would recommend going to a true men's store established in 1818 across the walk way. This particular time I had stopped in for a custom shirt that I had been seeking for my wedding. I had already been to all the major department stores and started to come to grips this would be custom order. I was upfront and needed the shirt in a short period of time (one month to be exact.) The previous stores all said they would love to help but one month was just too short of a time period. I thanked them for the honesty and service then moved on. I finally got to Gary s where I walked though into the store where one of the store associates was already assisting another customer. I patiently waited for another associate to assist me, a gentleman walked up and asked if I needed help. I said I was looking for a shirt and possibly a suite, but my initial need was a shirt with a specific collar "traditional rounded collar". At this point the associate stopped me mid-sentence and went back to help the other customer he had been assisting. It took a few discussions and eventually a drawing to explain what type of shirt I was looking for. Another associate made a comment about how it is not a fashionable shirt in a derogatory tone. Even another customer commented how he felt the Gary's associates did not like my taste in traditional suite shirts. This was a shirt I needed for a themed wedding and I was willing to pay whatever cost to have the correct attire. My sales associate proceeded to stop me again and go assist his first customer who had come out of the dressing room and was complaining he was not getting the attention he deserved. His customer was upset he did not have the cloths pulled off the shelves and his customary drink waiting for him. I was starving since it was after 7pm I said I would be back after ate and he had finished with his first customer. He begged me to stay and he would be done in just a few minutes. I walked into Gary's and found the sales associate I was working with. He seemed hesitant to work with me; I looked though the samples fabric and discuss the logistics of having the shirt completed in time. He said he would still have to call the manufacturing rep and discuss the chance to have the shirt fabricated in time but assured this was possible with a rush order. I was tried to understand how he was assuring me he could have it finished but needed to talk to the rep the following day. I chose 2 fabric swatches and begun the fitting process, I tried on a shirt with the correct neck but the shirt itself was made for someone 3xmy width. I was looking for a fitted tailored look, I had 6 inches of material on each side under my arms that needed to be taken in. He fed me some line about only being able to take a ¼ inch of material from under my arms and could not provide a tailored look. I saw the quote page for the manufacturing company and it had up to 4 inches to be removed from under the arms. If I was going to spend almost $300 on a shirt I expect it to fit better than a circus tent. I should have known that a sales associate who can only tie a half Windsor knot and his shirt half tucked in and barely acceptable for clean shaven at a man's clothing company would not be a good to assist me in finding a tailor made shirt. In a good twist of fate the demanding customer who the sales associate who was helping at first returned to the store and said he wanted to return his whole purchase because a large department store had a better price and more desirable items. I decided this was not going to be a good choice and it was too risky for me to rely on all the variables to align in such a short period of time for a single shirt to be made. I gratefully thanked my sales associate and said this would not work out for me. As I walked out the sales man followed me out and was saying how I had unreasonable expectations. I was clear up front about what I needed and understood it was short notice. He said I did not understand what a fitted shirt was. I thanked him and said I would see my haberdashery in Los Angles the following day. He began to take small pot shorts on a shop he did not even know and said there were no fine tailors who could do a better job than Gary's. I stood there and took a few minutes of him venting when I had to ask him to calm down and stop leaning in my face as if he was angry. His words had escalated and he was speaking to me as if I was a child. I began to leave again when he followed me closer to the door and kept talking to me. I stopped tried to thank him and leave but he started to lecture me about clothing again. I finally had to just leave the store. I walked out for the final time and will never return to Gary's again. read more

My Father in law introduced his sons to Corney and he has been taking care of the whole family for years. The clothing Corney has sold as from Gary's is beautiful and you don't see in every dept store and they are true quality. My husband was wearing a beautiful cashmere Blazers Corney suggested that we were apprehensive about when we first purchased it and he knew we would get many wearings out and he was he was absolutely right, ten years later...LOL and it so gorgeously classic like the first day we bought itthanks to both corny and Gary's. They have extremely nice clothes across a broad age group from traditional to trendy. Be careful of some of the sales Associates in the main section of the store... They can be a bit pushy and hover to a level of discomfort. Maybe some of the customers like that, but I prefer someone who gets me pointed in the right direction then lets me look, and offers honest opinions when I ask for one versus just trying to sell me the first thing I look at. I dodged the last person I worked with and found Colin.... He is awesome and gives you enough space to breathe. read more

This is a very impressive men's clothing store and I am glad I found it! If you have a great sense of style and prefer quality versus quantity, this is the store for you. Chris N. provided me with great service, and gave great recommendations . The store also has a small nook, specifically for formal wear. This area Included a fine assortment of formal hardware such as cuff-links, bow-ties, belts, velvet slippers by Magnanni and Ferragamo. From A to Z and even a selection of cologne you can have your needs met with no problem, no matter the event. I really appreciate the service, as well as the free tailoring with purchase. I've been shopping at Gary's for a few years now, I went in on Tuesday and wow have things changed. I was looking for some shoes, when we walked in to take a look I was approached by an older gentleman (black curly hair and tinted glasses) that asked if he could help me, I then proceeded to tell him what I was looking for and what color I preferred, before I could finish I was told "there aren't any shoes in those colors, I've been doing this for over 25 years." So my fiancé and I explained we have seen them online and in magazines we were just wondering if you carry anything close to this. His response again was "no he has been in the shoe businesses for 25 years, that doesn't exist". So then I took out my phone and showed him 5 different pairs of them and at that point he said "well those must be Italian". So I said "OK" I will just try on these Ferragamo's in a 9. He then walked away and came back and said we don't have those in your size and he walked away. Needless to say the service has changed I would not recommend them for anything at this point. As I was walking out I saw a gentleman on the phone that worked there and asked him if he was the Manger and his response was no but can I help you I explained what happened and his response was "would you like a cocktail?" Wow how about, "well let me see if I can find you some shoes that you like." Well I walked over to Neiman and was helped out by a gentleman, Chazz and he found the shoes I wanted and was happy to spend $850 on the same exact shoes Gary's had as well, I will from now on be going back to Neiman they have a larger selection and are truly helpful. read more
