G u s t o r has no personality I was a hairdresser for 30 odd years owned to salons but my opinions didn't mean anything to him had my hair done 2 weeks before I met him went in to have a corrective haircut person that did it the first time highlighted and lowlighted and left the chemicals on my hair for close to two hours so my hair was damaged all the way to the root he left it much like the other person it's not happy at all with his work or his know-it-all personality everybody seems to love his work but nobody seems to put pictures these are my before and after please cancel my appointment in July I'll never go back read more

I am editing this review because apparently Yelp didn't push through a response to me until a little while ago. I see the response was sent soon after I sent in my request but I didn't have anything in my messages until about 30 minutes ago so I've kicked up my review to 4 stars and will edit more after making an appointment cheers and I am excited since all the reviews are such raves. It said response time within an hour, for requesting an appointment, it's been well over an hour. Pushing 2 and nothing. Quite disappointing considering the rave reviews. I guess it can no longer say 100% response. I even double checked the hours of operation on Yelp. I'd understand if they said closed today but it states they are open. First time with Gaston. After having been to five salons in Avondale and Goodyear with an average price of $45 for a haircut and blow dry, FINALLY found someone who could cut my hair correctly. I have naturally curly hair and if it is not cut correctly, it looks horrible. Well, Gaston is the one!!! Yeah! He is an expert in hair cutting, believe me! I am from Newport Beach, CA where you have a bevy of hairstylists, most of which are very good. I have not had a good haircut since leaving California 7 years ago. I HIGHLY recommend Gaston. He is not only an expert in hair cutting but very personable and LISTENS to what you need. I do not ever tell a hair stylist of his caliber what to do and how to cut my hair but what my problems are in haircuts and he gave me the best haircut in 7 years!!! THANK YOU. No one in the Valley can create magic the way that Gaston does. I wanted to let my hair 'go natural' to bring back a healthy look but didn't want my roots to show in the process. He stopped coloring it and just with semi-permanent highlights and lowlights, I no longer have to worry about my roots showing. And my hair is healthy again. I showed different pictures and we discussed what I liked about each haircut and how to adapt to my thick coarse hair texture. Managing hair color, with so much grey coming into the front only, is no easy undertaking. I had my hair bleached from black, at another salon. But, I was only half way there. My hair was four colors when I walked in! He listened to me, sat down and combed through pictures I brought in, and then spent FIVE HOURS correcting the color of my hair. I have been enhancing my color for over 20 years. As an active-duty military member it's very hard to get somebody that understands your wants along with making you look beautiful. He is Very talented with the red color. Gaston was an amazing experience. Also, he took a good amount of time consulting with me and made sure that I understood the process and that I felt comfortable with what he was going to do. Gaston was wonderful! You can tell he knows how to cut hair and what looks good on you plus a lot of helpful tips with taking care of your hair. He was honest with me about my hair and I respect that. My hair was a mess trying to grow out a bad perm. In the end I think it surprised him on how well it turned out and I really like it! I've been going to Gaston for a little over a year after getting tired of hopping between those budget hair salons. I wanted someone who would listen to what my hair goals were, take the time to actually look at my hair, and then educate me about how to care for it and create a plan to reach those goals. I have found Gaston to be meticulous about his work and I could not appreciate it more. He takes pride in his work and it shows with the fantastic work that leaves his salon everyday. My hair has never looked better thanks to Gaston and his expertise. Ok... I must share my experience I had with Gaston Hair! I have been looking for a hairstylist since I moved to Avondale less than a year ago. I started just calling around getting appointments and some were okay, some not so OK. I came across Gaston Hair, did my usual, asked if they had anything available. Unfortunately it didn't work with my schedule. So a week went by and I stumbled across reviews for Gaston Hair and how fabulous Gaston was. I called back and told Todd I wanted an appointment with Gaston and I would arrange my schedule. He informed me his next available appointment wasn't until August. Well, I would have looked like "IT" from The Adams Family by then. He said I could get in to see Rachelle, Gaston's assistant. I took it. She was awesome! Loved her and her work. After spending a few days with my cut, it just wasn't right. No fault of Rachelle's. So I explained To Todd what I was looking for and I made another appointment with Rochelle. It was important to Todd to "fix" it, even though it was my fault for not communicating with Rachelle. When I arrived to my appointment... low and behold, Gaston was there. I did not expect him to be there and was totally fine with Rachelle. Guys, Gaston had previous engagements he was required to be at. He took time out of his morning to come and meet me to make sure I got what I was wanting. It wasn't like he needed to calm down an angry customer, but showed up for moral support, some pointers and clarity. We all three figured it out together. I am so, so happy with how my hair came out, but more impressed with Gaston and his team. Gaston didn't have to take the time to be there that morning, but he showed up because he genuinely cares. He is so funny, he listened, and not afraid to be himself which made me feel so comfortable. Rachelle his absolutely amazing as well and Todd always got right back to me!! This team went above and beyond and took care of me. It wasn't even a bad situation. I just wanted it shorter and a little different. I expected to pay for another cut because it wasn't because Rachelle did anything wrong. I felt like I was the only client they had and it was all about me! I had a lot of bad experiences in Arizona prior to seeing Gaston on recommendation from a friend. I saw him twice for haircuts and one visit included a partial foil. I was generally happy and had future appointments scheduled. I went to Seattle in July for 2 months and was due to be home Sept. 19. I made an appointment for Sept. 24 before I left. Unfortunately I didn't have a note of the date with me but didn't think I would need to as I would be home. As luck would have it I had a back injury and could not return as scheduled. On Sunday I received my reminder text and realized my appointment was for the next day. Since it was Sunday I called first thing Monday morning and left a detailed voicemail explaining my circumstance and asked for a call back ASAP to reschedule (the reminder text said if you need to make a change to call or text). As there was no response after a couple of hours I sent a text as well. I got a return text from someone else stating they would make sure Gaston got the message. I did not receive any response that day. The next morning I sent another text asking for a response and to my great surprise I received a response from Gaston stating it was unfortunate I missed my appointment and his next appointment was at the end of the month but if I wanted to reschedule I would need to pay a $65 fee for missing my appointment without a 24 hour notice. Since I didn't realize I was going to miss my appointment until Sunday there was no way I could have left a 24 hour notice. I responded letting him know I would not be rescheduling and I felt this was poor customer service--not only the $65 fee but in not responding initially. I did not receive any response except an auto email informing me my future appointments were canceled. I have had amazing hairdressers in Seattle prior to moving to AZ. On very rare occasions I have had to cancel with short notice (life happens) and have never been treated like this but instead I was assisted right away in rescheduling. Because I have had great hairdressers I have always had to book pretty far out and I make it a priority to keep these appointments. I am not a flake. I had my own business as an esthetician and I too had clients have to miss appointments on occasion without a lot of notice. I would never have treated my clients this way. I understand he had a gap in his day, and this might have been an appropriate response to a client who had done this habitually but in my opinion this is just bad business. He lost a client who would have continued to be a client but apparently $65 was more important. I had already referred someone to him as well. Another policy I disliked is haircuts are $50 and if you wanted your hair blow dried it was an additional $10. I don't care if I leave with wet hair but in my opinion the hairdresser should dry your hair in order to tell what the final result is and that should not be an additional charge to the client--it should be part of the haircut/color. He isn't by any means the worst hairdresser I have been to--I was mostly satisfied but I have had years of exceptional hairdressers with a lot of training beyond beauty school and there is no comparison. read more
