Trying to use these people for a FFL transfer is a joke. They refuse to send a copy of the FFL to the person selling the gun so they can provide it to their dealer, despite the law requiring them to do so within 24 hours of written request. Then after having their FFL contact them directly they wouldn't send a copy to him until he sent his first. how stupid is that? playing chicken with licenses. These people are a joke! read more

Find another gunsmith, this place is too busy & short staffed to keep up with the work they claim to have. They had my firearms for over 12 weeks to perform grip replacement, inspection, strip & clean as the guns haven been checked/fired in years. When I called to get an update I was told that my claim tickets were so old that they weren't even on the "to do" worksheet. I emailed them to have my firearms ready for pickup, only then I got told the firearms were inspected back in January but nothing done for another 8 weeks, makes no sense. Took my firearms to another shop for the same request & got them back in less than 2 weeks. Save your time & aggravation & go elsewhere read more

Since the early 70's and to this day, The Gun Doctor is family-owned and operated as a full service firearms dealer. Also providing in house gunsmithing services such as repair, restoration, refinishing and custom fabrications. When I happen to stumble upon The Gun Doctor's facebook post that they were now offering course training and certificates for the Illinois Concealed Carry I immediately signed up. For the last decade I have been actively working in parts of Chicago's southside neighborhoods that have been featured on the news for shootings and gang violence. Rather then being a statistic I felt as an educated individual to practice my Second Amendment Right with the help of professional instructors and course training via The Gun Doctor. Let me say this first. I have been to many other firearm shops and The Gun Doctor is my favorite. For those who are well invested in this hobby I assure you The Gun Doctor has treated me with kindness and respect as a beginner to this industry. The course instructors (Mike & Joe) are family guys just like anyone else with a massive amount of knowledge. I haven't set foot in a classroom setting since my college days and the 16 hours flew by quickly. The course is NOT about sitting down taking notes while the instructors lecture. They give real life situations backed up by a powerpoint presentation. My favorite part of the course was the hands on questions and group interactions with my fellow classmates. The course atmosphere was family oriented with students ranging from both male and female ages roughly 30 years to 70 years old. The course training broken up into 2 day classes included in the range firing pistols, lectures, safety and body mechanics while carrying. My fellow classmates and I were a real team showing comradery. This was an eye-opening experience into what I imagine soldiers develop in the military with one another. Upon completion of the course we graduated with our NRA Basic Pistol and Conceal Carry Training certificate. I want everyone to understand that Gun Safety is everyones business and proper use is only developed through continued education. read more

I had a great experience with the Gun Doctor. I had a very old shotgun that I had dissassembled to remove a stuck snap cap shotgun shell. It was old enough to have screws and internal parts that made it impossible for me to put it back together properly. They cleaned it and fixed it up for me at a fair price. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is that it took 2.5 weeks to make the repair. They warned me ahead of time that it would take that long so no big deal. I heard other people complain on Yelp that they take a long time and that seems to be true, but they do a really good job and I think they are just backed up with all the business they have. read more

I put money down on an AR.15 Mandy told me because it was a black gun/ rifle I couldn't put it on lay away for 30 days like every other gun shop in IL. I had to pay it off with in 2 weeks. I took my Model 1911 .45ACP to the Gun Doctor to have new sites installed... I had Micro Target sights installed on it years ago and I have had some issues with the front sight coming off, which it did again when I was out shooting a few weeks back. They quoted me a price for fiber optic sights and told me 2-3 weeks as they were backed up... "Fine, no problems" I said... After 3 weeks I called and a young lady told me: "it was on the bench"... "Fine, I 'll call back next week" I said, figuring it would be done by then... I called a week later and after holding for a few minutes I was speaking to the gunsmith, who told me that the sights that the young lady had picked out for my .45 would not fit... "Fine I said" being somewhat perturbed that it took 4 weeks for them to tell me that, "lets put on some other sights" I said, "maybe the ones with the white dots on them"... The gunsmith told me reluctantly that he would have to investigate it and get back to me... I had to ask all the questions even though he knows more about the job than I do - It seemed like he was very disinterested in doing this job... Maybe it wasn't enough money, or a large enough job, or he didn't want to fool with it - I'll never know... "Ok fine" I said... After another week went buy and I had not heard word one from either the gunsmith or the owner, I went over to the The Gun Doctor and picked up my .45 and took it somewhere else... Overall, extremely poor service and a total lack of follow up - I'll never go back!!! read more

Placed an on line order for my new pistol and chose to pick it up at Gun Doctor. It's close to where I work and I'd rather do business with a local guy than with a huge chain store. The price was great and the service was fine. There was a tiny blemish on my new hand gun and they pointed it out to me, which tells me that they are honest and not trying to hide anything from me or sneak anything past me. I took the gun, tiny blemish and all. The nice guys who work there are quick to chat and share info and that's just fine by me. Update to the last review... After retrieving my shotgun from "the gun dr." I took it to a guy in elmwood park. I personally ordered the "mystery part" on the internet and recieved it in less than 5 days. The gunsmith in elmwood park fixed it in a day!!! Oh, and he also replaced a couple of screws that "the gun doctor" forgot to put back after taking my shotgun apart, class... Keep up the good work gun dr. Steer clear of this shop!!! read more

I've done a few transactions with them over the years. There's a sign on the register about them charging a $25 fee for "rude customers". Whether it's tongue in cheek or serious, it's just not good service. How can someone expect good service from a place with that attitude. Gun stores are VERY intimidating places. They don't need to roll out a red carpet and give you a back massage when you walk in, but they also should have a level of welcoming. Its 2013. People are rude, obnoxious a-holes. There's no way to escape it. Customers expect more from businesses. Gun Doctor needs to get on board with the times and adapt to the way things are. Customer service is the cornerstone of any business. Their selection is too small to have an elitist attitude. The sign needs to come down, and management needs to accept the fact that they are not immune to rude customers, especially when people are spending $500-1000 a pop. read more

I have been a Gun Doctor customer for about 5 years. They have accepted shipped weapons for me as an FFL, I bought 3 guns, and they have repaired my shotgun. I am very pleased with their service. Their FFL fees are reasonable, and their in-store service is professional and polite. The most important thing to me is the gun smith service. Randy is a craftsman. He restored my Browning A5 shotgun that has been in my family for a hundred years. It was badly rusted and the stock was cracked. Randy restored that gun into a beautiful near-perfect piece of art. When I walk into this store I am immediately greeted by name. It's a cheers environment that always makes me feel comfortable when purchasing a new gun. I have shopped around on transfer fees and the Dr is competitive if not cheaper than all of the others. They also don't deny in stock transfers like Art2 and GAT. For the bleacher seats that's if they can stock the gun they won't let you transfer it in. Though I wish they had a range to test guns out I'd much rather be treated with respect than rely on the convenience of other shops. read more

I brought in a Remington 7400 back in June of 2011 to have my disconnector replaced. Calling numerous times about the repair, always getting told Remington set the wrong part. Finally went in June 30 2012 and got my rifle out of there, with the excuse it's a throw away rifle. Called another local gunsmith and he advised me to go on line and order the parts myself (Also helped on locating and getting the right parts needed) and bring it in for a quicker turn around. I ordered the parts on June 30, and received them on July 6 2012. Just brought the rifle in today July 7 2012, and he figures with his back up about 3 weeks. Took me a week to get the right parts, but my rifle sat here for 1 year, and missed a hunting season without it. Won't be going back to this place any time soon. read more
