Orders posted with time and specifications.

Here's the translation: "I am a Grubhub delivery driver, and most times I come here, I end up waiting longer than acceptable. I have to say, it's impossible not to notice the difference in treatment between a regular citizen from New Canaan and a delivery driver. I'm not accusing anyone of racism or anything like that, but I don't see any urgency in attending to someone who is working. I arrived here at 6:20 to pick up the order that was supposed to be ready by 6:23. It's now 6:50, meaning nearly a 30-minute delay. I'll attach a photo of the order, which is just a single dish. I regret having to make this post, but this issue is recurring at this restaurant."

"Crispy" Brussels Sprouts - Both burned and mushy.

Was a regular patron for many years. I work nearby and have ordered take out several times and each time there is an issue with my order. Tonight was my last try. Brussels Sprouts that were completely black char, covered in gloppy sauce and completely mushy. So inedible I took the time to walk back across the street and give them back. Had neither time nor interest in waiting for another order. No offer to refund, just a "look me up" from the man at the desk I gave them to. Also ordered a pizza that had nearly raw toppings and was undercooked. That I will take it home from the office and finish cooking it tomorrow because I didn't want to waste the entire $40 I spent for an inedible dinner.

The interior is gorgeous and has a very nice atmosphere. I appreciated the variety of seating options as it allowed us to sit somewhere we liked without feeling too crowded. The menu is on the smaller scale but there were a couple dishes that sounded appetizing to me and I'm happy with what I got. What we got: Lime, mint, & basil virgin mojito - 3.5-4* it was quite refreshing though definitely got watered down and less sweet. I wish there had been less ice in the drink to help prevent that problem and allow for longer enjoyment of the drink. I am grateful that they do have an amended price for the non-alcoholic version, not all restaurants do. Spicy Tuna Bowl with Cauliflower Rice - 5* this is what I got and I thought it was delicious! The cauliflower rice was so flavorful (you could choose between a few different base options). The tuna was also very good and the spicy sausage paired well with the dish. The pickled vegetables also went very well with everything. There were two big slices of radish on the side and it seemed like one of them had an old spot on it, so I just set it aside. Salmon BLT - my partner got this and didn't love it. He also wasn't as excited about any of the menu options. As I mentioned, slim pickings. I tried it and agreed that the salmon didn't really add anything to the sandwich, it was lacking in flavor and a little dry. The bacon was fantastic though. The fries that came on the side were average. Lobster Roll - my friend got this and said it was very good. Sorry I can't add more to the review than that, haha

What a great spot! I stopped in to Gates one afternoon for lunch and had a fantastic experience - I can't wait to return for drinks and dinner soon. The restaurant is huge with an awesome bar area as well as a stage for entertainment. Patrons and staff all were respectful, observing all COVID-19 regulations and guidelines. I had the Cuban sandwich and is was superb! The pork was so juicy and the portion huge; ham, cheese and pickles also added delicious flavor. The bread selected was a perfect fit for the sandwich - not too crispy but it still held the contents well. Sweet potato fries are a worth-it upgrade that made my lunch go from really good to great. Service was friendly and efficient, too. Can't wait to be back!

Update: new ownership has changed the formula, removed the garden room and ruined the menu. What a shame. We won't be back.

After exiting off the "always under construction" Merritt Pkwy (CT 15), I headed into the downtown area of New Canaan and decided on Lombardi's Ristorante & Bar, which opened recently in the former Papyrus space. This Italian restaurant and bar offers and cozy modern atmosphere with table seating along the right wall and a full bar with seating along the left side. They do have a dress code here including no hats, no hoodies, no sweatpants. The food offerings include a selection of crafted homemade pasta dishes, meat & seafood dishes, appetizers, salads, cheese & meat samplers, and dessert. The pricing is on the higher side and food is prepared to order. The bar serves beer, wine, and cocktails. I also called the restaurant to make sure they were open after 9 pm, when I would be passing through. I arrived here around 9:15pm, which was the perfect time when things weren't too busy. I left my cap in the vehicle and entered Lombardi's and took a seat at the bar. The bartender gave me a menu to look at and offered water. I decided on a starter, but the bartender helped me decide on an entrée. For a starter, the Frittatina Napoletana ($18 plus tax), which was a fried pasta fritter filled with linguine noodles, peas & ham in a cream sauce and topped with a white sauce. For an entrée, the Cavatelli Rossi Al Ragu Bianco ($30 plus tax), very firm hand rolled pasta curls, in a white veal ragu with dehydrated tomato dust & parmigiano fondue. Both the starter and entrée were fantastic choices with good hearty flavors. After I was done, I passed on dessert and got the check with Toast QR code which was $51.52 with tax and before tip. Overall, I enjoyed some great well prepared Italian dishes, nicely presented. The service was very good here. The bartender was able to keep an eye on things, offering water & drinks, making suggestions and also chatting about life. The food runners brought me the starter and entrée in timely order. I would definitely recommend Lombardi's for a date night, special occasion, or just wanting to enjoy some great food.

The one in Darien is relatively new and is very conveniently located right by the train station. The decor is stylish with a nautical theme that is very nice fitting for a seafood restaurant. They have outdoor seating and a nice bar area. We sat in one of the booths, which are high up but have a bar where you can rest your feet comfortably. James was our server, and he was great at explaining the menu and answered all of our questions regarding the food. I ordered the miso salmon entrée and my friend got the reel deal with salmon. The salmon was very nicely seasoned and cooked perfectly. The vegetables were delicious, cooked al dente so they were firm and full of flavor. I only wish they would have given a bigger piece of avocado since the slice was tiny. Prices are on the pricy side but not outrageous.

Because I didn't experience any of them. I've lived in the next town for almost eight years. In that time I've eaten at the New Canaan Diner AT LEAST 100 times. This night was not special; just looking for a late night hamburger. It's Friday night, May 9. It's raining. The sign in the window says that they are open until 9 pm. I walked in at 8:40 pm. Ok, a little late, but I just wanted a hamburger. More than half of the tables were filled. All of the seats at the counter were filled. People were eating. All good signs. The waiter said, "We're closed," and immediately turned his back to me. Not "Sorry, we're closed." Just "We're closed," and I got his back. I looked around the room at all the people eating and said to one of the other waitstaff, "You're closed?" She looked embarrassed and said, "Well, the kitchen is closed...." She seemed to understand that her colleague's behavior was inappropriate in a retail eating establishment. He shouldn't leave this job to be a greeter at Walmart. He would be bad at that. I nodded and walked out. I'm having Japanese food across the street. I really didn't want Japanese food for dinner, but the food is always good at Hama and the hospitality is always superior. All the chefs at the sushi bar bow and say "thank you" as I leave. I'm sure that their gratitude is not deeply sincere, but it beats "We're closed" followed by an abrupt about-face. The diner is dead to me. At least for a while.
