The app says at the top that I might consider "Food", "Service", and "Ambiance" in writing this review. I would consider all of those things but that would be unfair. Because I didn't experience any of them. I've lived in the next town for almost eight years. In that time I've eaten at the New Canaan Diner AT LEAST 100 times. This night was not special; just looking for a late night hamburger. It's Friday night, May 9. It's raining. The sign in the window says that they are open until 9 pm. I walked in at 8:40 pm. Ok, a little late, but I just wanted a hamburger. More than half of the tables were filled. All of the seats at the counter were filled. People were eating. All good signs. The waiter said, "We're closed," and immediately turned his back to me. Not "Sorry, we're closed." Just "We're closed," and I got his back. I looked around the room at all the people eating and said to one of the other waitstaff, "You're closed?" She looked embarrassed and said, "Well, the kitchen is closed...." She seemed to understand that her colleague's behavior was inappropriate in a retail eating establishment. He shouldn't leave this job to be a greeter at Walmart. He would be bad at that. I nodded and walked out. I'm having Japanese food across the street. I really didn't want Japanese food for dinner, but the food is always good at Hama and the hospitality is always superior. All the chefs at the sushi bar bow and say "thank you" as I leave. I'm sure that their gratitude is not deeply sincere, but it beats "We're closed" followed by an abrupt about-face. I came for weekday breakfast and there were only a few tables occupied. Kitschy old school diner vibe, with frankly minimal service. Our server only came to take our order, deliver food, and hand the check (which you pay at the register). I ordered the Post Road Breakfast Burrito under their "breakfast creative omelettes." It would have been dry if it were a standalone omelette, but satisfying slathered in sour cream and salsa. If you are looking for acceptable, no-frills diner food, this place meets those expectations. read more

Came here tonight for the first time. Was in the area and needed dinner. I ordered the Thanksgiving dinner in a wrap. Turkey, stuffing, gravy, and cranberry sauce..wow was it delicious!! The only thing I would have liked more of was gravy and cranberry sauce. I was gonna ask my server for a slice, but she never checked on us. I also ordered cheese and gravy fries.. unbelievably delicious. I didn't want them to end, lol. The gentlemen that cleaned my table, gave me a menu, and brought me a drink was very kind and attentive. On the other hand, our server was not good. She literally just took our order. She never checked on us, and I had to go ask her for the check. She should learn to be more attentive to her tables. Especially since it's a tiny diner and wasn't slammed. Unpretentious and open in the early morning -- if you're planning long walks in the area, this is where to tank up on carbs and protein. Staff is in the business of promptly delivering your omelet, not judging whether your sweater is a appropriate brand to wear on the yacht. Breakfast is solidly well-prepared. My waffle exactly fulfilled the parameters for being a waffle. Given that I ordered the one with ham (those breakfast slices that look like Canadian bacon), scrambled eggs, and (looks like a Kraft singles mozzarella slice) cheese on top, that it was not greasy becomes a more impressive feat, the more you think about it. The cook is a champion egg-scrambler who could teach Gordon Ramsey a thing or three. Prices are extremely reasonable for the location. Interior is one of those Martha Stewart-esque blues that is incredibly soothing in the early morning light, as you sip your coffee and watch the narrow street outside. read more

It was GREAT and met the standard on all three fronts. I was greeted at the door with a warm welcome. The waitress who took my order passed the person bringing my order to me as she took my order to the kitchen...... OK, that's not really possible, but you know what I mean. Fast service. This diner is pretty cute on the inside, it has a classic diner feel. It is pretty cramped at times especially when it's busy but not too bad since they also have outdoor seating. Believe it or not, my favorite thing to get is their guacamole because it's extremely fresh and they serve it with homemade chips. I've also had breakfast here and it was good, pretty typical, nothing special. Worth a try but it is typically filled with families, children, and groups of teens so it gets extremely lively at times. The only reason for 4 and not 5 stars, the French fries are awful. How awful? I left 70% on the plate. They were coated with some lumpy stuff that stuck them together in big lumps. New management - SAME PROBLEMS! I have never ordered take-out from this restaurant without having a item or two missing, and something be wrong. Tonight they left out an item and BOTH of the main dishes we ordered were wrong. The new owner asked if we would like her to drive them over, but no. We want it right the first time, especially in the wake of having it wrong consistently over the last 3-4 take out orders. I also don't want the food sitting in a stranger's car during a Covid surge. Then she asked us to text her photos of the food we told her was wrong and our receipts as if she didn't believe us when we told her the food was wrong! She refunded the missing item, not the main part of the meals which were incorrect because the staff either doesn't listen or doesn't care. It's a problem in this restaurant where they care more about charging you for moderate diner food than they do your customer experience. That is how you lose customers and the diner. This place is an exercise in futility and frustration - even under new management - go to Cherry Street East instead. They would NEVER do that to a customer. read more

We were on our way to Bridgeport during a here sous traffic jam and took a detour. Yelp to the rescue to get dinner and wait out the traffic. I found a great place with 4 starts and as we pull up with my 9 year old she really really really wants to go into the diner. I check the reviews and they are not so hot. Oh well let's try it. Basic diner food that hit the spot. The malt was super yummy with banana and chocolate. The ambiance: the diner is small and super cute. It was full if teens, parents with kids (like me) and some older folks. What really stood out for me however was the cleanliness of the place. It was spotless! That is a huge feat for what I usual think of when I think diner, greasy. Not here. Seriously look at the salt shakers, the counter where they make the shakes or anywhere for that matter. I saw the staff wiping things down when they were not helping customers. The cashier was cleaning the plastic folds where you get your bills. I don't think I've really ever even seen that done at a restaurant. It's really super spotless. The staff was nice to us and it was a really easy choice. The New Canaan Diner. It looks like it is straight out of the same idyllic movie. I open the door, after an uncomfortable 2 minutes, the employee bruskly says "sit anywhere". A few minutes go by we get menus, it is massive- they have everything. You name it.. turkey sandwich, 7 types of French toast, milkshakes, platters, breakfast... it's epic. A thought hits me, how the hell would anyone know how to cook all this. I push it to the back of my mind and think.. it's a diner- get diner food. It will complete the 1950's movie scene perfectly. I order corned beef hash, 2 eggs and hash browns, my companion orders a smoked salmon bagel with capers and onion. 2 coffee and OJ. We are excited, the anticipation for this meal is building. 84 seconds later the food appears. The corned beef hash is right out of a can, the eggs are fine, the hash browns are flavorless cubes of carbohydrates. The salmon bagel is a monstrosity that defies adequate explanation. It's a block of cream cheese - not spread, wet red onions, giant capers and tons of messy smoked salmon that looks like something which you feed to Shamu to make her do flips for the crowd. To summarize it was truly horrific. We consume portions of each, lament our poor choices in life that led to this moment, and realize our idyllic movie was really a good nightmare on elm street. It looks just like a vintage diner inside I was in love when I came inside. Music selection was michael Jackson/prince/queen which I loved as well. The waffle fries were probably the best waffle fries I've ever tasted, and the grilled cheese with bacon lettuce and tomato was just as delicious. I just noticed that I have a pretty unfavorable review of NC Diner here. It's four years old, and I think it's time to re-review (especially given the number to times I've been there since.) It's still expensive, but it's the New Canaan, so what can one expect? That being said, the food is good quality, comfort diner food. The service is very good and the staff friendly. You need to be careful about going in on the weekends for breakfast, as it's a bit small & the Daddies taking their kids out for weekend breakfast (and giving Mommy a break) can make the place a bit loud. I wish they'd have the shredded type of hash browns, in addition to their home fries, and that their breakfast sausages were the little small links I like, and not the big ones they have. The ambience is very cute. The diner is a very small hole in the wall on a lovely little streets on the edge of downtown New Canaan. Downtown New Canaan is itself very quaint and cute. I had a breakfast meeting with a colleague from White Plains, and it worked out to be a pretty good mid point. The menu has a lot of interesting choices. There's even a full page of Milkshakes. We were there for breakfast and and there were a lot of really interesting choices. That said, I ordered two eggs poached on the toast with potatoes. My standby very regular breakfast. Everything was prepared just the way I hoped service was friendly and quick. The only drawback was that the coffee was terrible. Everything else was great. I'm willing to overlook the coffee. Has all of the typical greek diner fare that you'd expect to find at a place like this, but at a markup that is fitting for the neighborhood. I was in the neighborhood one morning and decided to stop for breakfast. So I sat at the counter and ordered an omelet which came with home fries and toast.
