I needed to change my brake pads, so I brought my car in the Mount Vernon Washington shop. After their inspection, they tried to make me replace all rotors, all brake pads, and extra calipers I didn't need, totaling well over $3000. When questioning them about what repairs were necessary they said all of them. Needless to say I brought my car to a different place for a second opinion and turns out I did not need all those repairs. Stay far away from this place. read more

My experience with Gateway has been nothing but stellar. I have used them for oil changes rather than going to my dealership. And what I experienced was NO pressure on needing to change and cabin or air filters every time! I asked about them and they said they didn't need changing. The dealership pressured me EVERY time to get new filters. Last visit was for a Cooling system fluid flush and they changed the filters then, all at a reasonable cost and time frame. Avonly at the front counter is personable and friendly. On one occasion where I chose to wait for my car I watched her help customers and take calls. In one instance a caller wanted some sunroof help. She explained that they didn't service sunroofs. She referred them to another place that does and told them if they couldn't find help there they would take a look at it as a courtesy to see if they could help. Another example of their excellent customer service was after I had paid I happen to mention the spoiler on my Sante Fe hatch was loose and a nut had come off that secured it. She and another technician came out and in less than 10 minutes had it properly back on and checked all fittings to make sure it was safe. (no charge) I miss this kind of hometown service. These people are a ripoff! They just gouge and replace things that aren't broken. My 93 year old mother had the same bad experience that I did. My mom went to the Sedro Woolley location and I went to Mount Vernon so apparently it's their corporate culture to gouge their customers. I knew exactly what was wrong and I told them in advance. We took our 1999 Land Rover Discovery 2 to Gateway Automotive in Mount Vernon WA as we had been experiencing multiple coolant and oil leakage problems for quite some time. They did a very thorough inspection, complete with photographic evidence and suggested that we either needed a new automobile or a new motor. We love our Rover so we opted for a new motor although it would take some time to have one built. Land Rover built a new engine for us but it had problems. They expedited the building of a second one which, after thorough testing, performed wonderfully and continues to do so. It is like having a new car! Jeff Turner was a huge help. He kept us well informed throughout the process and the technicians we met were also super helpful and friendly. Our next visit will likely be for an oil change but with a 25 year old vehicle you never know quite what to expect. If I could give no stars I would They held my car for two months and never looked at it while telling me they had been working on it and it was going to cost $2.4K to fix but they recommended I replace the engine block that did not need replaced Now my car is full of rust and I have no choice but to replace the block and turbo They are not owning up to their mistake and trying to deny that made a mistake at all All they had to do is replace a gasket like they said they were going to do two months ago. Service was great. I went in for an oil change. They were thorough. The problem came when they brought me the bill. I had a coupon for $29.95 for the oil change. They knew that in advance. When the bill came it was for over $80. I told them that it was the wrong amount. My bill was refigured and I still walked out paying $10 more than I should have been charged. I was charged an unexplained fee of $8 and an unexplained surcharge of $1.23. It was like a bait and switch. Won't go back. read more

The first time I went here it was great. I thought they did a great service at a great price. I gave them a good review. (I had a new sensor put it and it ran a lot better). The last time I went there was terrible. First I should say I was in a time crunch, because I was only supposed to be there on the weekend, but on Thursday my car started overheating, I broke down on the pass from Spokane to Mount Vernon; I didn't really know how bad it was. I took it in to Gateway on Friday about 11am, explaining what happened. Could they help me get back home to work quickly? They are not open on the weekend but they did get me a discount on a rental car. The aren't open on Saturday and Sunday so they didn't even look at it until Monday. This "SERVICE ADVISOR" Andrea, is super rude. She kept sending me all this e-mail stuff without telling me (I was waiting for a phone call like most shops), then she could not or would not tell me when it would be done. We went into the second or third day and she got nasty to me when I called in the morning to see if it was done. It wasn't and I said "wow, I've never felt this frustrated at any other shop."I went to the library and waited and went back two hours later, paid the $1500 in cash and then she said " there is something wrong with your transmission. I never asked for a transmission test but they gave me one, and she said that they could fix it with a guarantee for another $3000! I said "no thanks, I'll take my chances" and she said, "well, go back to wherever you came from" in a really nasty tone. Then she wrote on her report that I was rude to her and they were "removing me from their database". Well guess what I'm sitting in a parking lot and my car is overheating again. Take your chances when you go there and bring your inheritance money! read more

Took my car into Car Care Clinic in Mount Vernon on Tuesday. Gateway Automotive Group. I was told if I did not receive a phone call that day it would be the next day. As best I can tell I was dealing with Max the unit manager. No one called I had to call them on Thursday to find out what was going on. Finally had to call them the following Tuesday to find out if the car was ready. It was not. Picked up later that evening. Never received a call when it was ready had to call back to confirm. The quote was a gouge in my opinion. According to the average for the service from other repair shops we are talking 78% more than the average, 20% more than the highest end of the average. I had no choice but to pay given the status of my car. Taking it somewhere else would require towing. I think they factored that into the price quote. After that he even tried to get an additional $150 for further diagnosis of what they were already charging to fix. The person I dealt with seemed to have an attitude from first contact to the phone call. Customer service not a strength for this individual. Customer courtesy not in his vocabulary. I remained positive throughout due to needed service regardless. I ended up paying $536 before tax. They charged $380 for labor which is very close to double what others have quoted. I would not adivse using these people. I chose them due to some of the positive reviews posted. Unfortuneatly not my experience. Pay close attention to the negative reviews you see as well to avoid a story like mine. I will not be going back to them other than any warranty claims that may arise. read more

THERE'S A REASON WHY THERE ARE VERY FEW NEGATIVE REVIEWS AS GATEWAY STAFF IMMEDIATLY REMOVES ANY REVIEW THEY DON'T LIKE. My previous reviews have been removed, so in the interest of honesty I'll repost my experiances. I took my car in (to gateway transmissions, mount Vernon, WA) for transmission rebuild, but soon 'butted heads' with Max the Service Manager as he apparently didn't like being told what he can and cannot work on. Once he had my car in his possession, he figured he could work on 'error codes' WITHOUT my permission. They also figured I wouldn't notice when they attempted to replace my transmission with an inferior aftermarket unit when we specifically agreed to rebuild mine. WRONG! I called for a meeting with the owner who put unlawfull limits on the meeting by requiring ONLY myself OR my wife could attend. This is clearly an intent to decieve and is specifically outlawed under Washington State Consumer Protection Laws and in clear violation of my Civil Rights. A lawsuit is currently pending. As a Disabled Veteran it is my right to bring my caregiver with me where and when I choose. The owner had no intention of even listening to my complaints and stated "see you in small claims court" as he knows the WORST that can happen is to be forced to return my deposit. To this day, Gateway currently is still refusing to return my $3175.46 deposit and has attempted to force me to accept a PARTIAL refund by fabricating an invoice for parts and services that were never done. Gateway has been able to 'cover their tracks' by deleting negative online reviews. Once my lawsuit is resolved, I will make sure the Public record is distributed for all to see. 'Auto Care by Gateway' is to be avoided at all costs. They took advantage of my disabilities and ambushed me out of over three thousand dollars. BEWARE! read more

My wife took her SUV in for oil change without getting quote. Other places have typically been $30-$40. Here? $19.95 labor, $30 oil and filter, shop supplies $3, haz mat $3.75, plus tax = $61.63. We were in trouble with a hurting transmission (an Allison) in our RV and managed to "limp" into their shop. They got us in right away, quickly diagnose the problem, ordered the parts and got us back on the road the next morning. The staff was very knowledgeable and worked well with the insurance company. Well....to be perfectly honest, I've barely driven my car since I had the whole freakin transmission rebuilt, but the customer service at Gateway was superb. I had been having transmission problems for months and had taken it to the dealership, where I bought it, and told them it was slipping but it wouldn't show up on the computer, and of course it wouldn't do it for the tech on several attempts ( isn't that how it always goes ). So I was sent on my merry way leaving service managers shaking their collective heads at the crazy person who keeps bugging them. So off I go and move to Mt. Vernon and the slipping now has gone from bothersome to frightening, Yelp to the rescue. I search for the best guys in town, and hands down the reviews on Gateway were astounding, and who am I to balk at 588 5 star reviews. Well I get there and Derek takes my car for the day to see what's up, and right away THEY get the allusive code from the computer that I wasn't crazy and a test drive soon confirmed something wasn't right. That's when Derek, who, unlike me, barely gasped, as he told me how much it was going to cost to fix it. Suffice to say, I was considering selling a kidney. It took a little more than a week to fix, and as I've said barely driven it before writing this review, but the guys there were very pleasant and professional, and I'm more than likely going to continue going there for all my mechanic needs......unless my tranny falls out on the freeway.....then I'll have to re-visit this review read more

Took my car to Gateway Transmission because my vehicle would make a clunk sound after 15-20 of driving. I did research and found that it was my shifter solenoid, I let them know. They took three days to get my vehicle in to check, afterwards they said that they would have to drop my transmission pan and it would cost 300. I said ok and the next day, they said that it might be a soldier joint to the shifter solenoid or it could be the shifter solenoid but it would take them 4.5hrs more and cost an additional 700. This was not the quote to actually fix the issue, this was a quote to get to another point where they could charge more money. This place is a joke and they take advantage of people. Dont take your vehicle to them unless you want to keep forking more money hand over fist. I told them to put it back together and I would cut my losses and be out 300. read more

Having a mechanic you can rely on is right up there with your choice of primary care doc and dentist. You want reliable professionals with good customer care in all cases, and I've found this at Car Care Clinic at Gateway Transmissions. I plan to continue bringing my vehicles to Bill and Max and their team of mechanics and technicians. Probably good competent service but 2 hours on those chairs made for a long wait, for just an oil change.

AVOID! I highly DO NOT recommend. 3 strikes and your out. First strike:Poor communication. I came into have my transmission that was shifting weird looked at and they sold me on parts i didn't need that didn't help. Second strike. I scheduled a oil change for a friday and they mistakenly scheduled me for the following friday and my radiator ended up blowing after they "tightened something " (they didn't mention exactly what) because they noticed the cooling system pressure was low. Third strike: once again they scheduled me wrong for a following friday that was not they one we agreed on . Bonus strike : after dropping my car off and putting my keys into there drop box they call me up and claim "they didn't find my keys" .I suspect they didn't want to work anymore because they squeezed me in that friday instead of the following friday that they messed up on the schedule.So now i'm down a spare key and have wasted so much time and money on this sloppy establishment. All i can say is STAY AWAY. These People Suck. Period. read more

I had a new clutch put in and then moved several states away. When it began acting up again after 5000 miles, I called and told them about the problem. They found me a local transmission shop to go to and paid for the repair with no hassles. The local shop said the failure was related to a defective part that they would have had no way of detecting and the workmanship looked good. They get five stars because of the service after the sale. read more

If you want to be spoken too like a idiot, charged far too much and wait 5 weeks due to "under-staffing" then go here. My trucks alternator went out and my engine was acting weird and they said they needed it untill tomorrow, 5 weeks later I'm in debt by quite a lot thanks to their CONVENIENT loan shark of a "small loan" application. $98/hr labor cost, horrible. This place bled us dry. We needed a new water pump. They said there was some others things that needed to be fixed. We said sure. 1200 was the price we were given. This was on Tuesday afternoon. We didn't get our car back till Friday morning. They kept trying to add more and more things to this car. It went from 1200 to 1350 really fast. Well they said that we needed new back brakes. Said it would be 2 hours and 200 dollars. SO I'm thinking 1550 right? Wrong. It all came down to 2140 something dollars. I am mad. My boyfriend is mad. My whole family is mad. We are never ever going here again. I suggest you don't even come near this place. Seriously stay away. read more
