After my experience before- when I married my husband and found out he hadn't gotten his wisdom teeth out so I sent him to Dr Potter. He was 29 and the procedure for all 4 wisdom teeth (my husbands choice to do all 4 at once, dr Potter also gave him the option to do one side at one visit and the other side at a second visit) and it took about an hour. 1.5 hours later he was back at work with no pain or complications. Yay! Thank you Gateway Dental for assisting in a loose retainer coming off of my bonded tooth and smoothening out the fixture! My general DDS when I inquired did not feel comfortable in conducting the service so I called around and Gateway Dental and Dr. Potter came through! I was able to call in and snag a 10:15am appointment with the ladies up front to assist with getting me seen. Polite and punctual, they were able to get me to fill out paper work, take me back where the dental assistant and I bonded over the cold weather, our husbands working night shifts at Samsung Austin with my wearing a SAS jacket and how they probably knew one another. She was able to remove the loose end and help me clean that straggler off, then Dr. Potter came in to smooth out the back so the rest of the wire would not poke through. Perfect visit, and done in less than 1 hour after paper work and waiting for Dr and assistants to all go through. The ladies conducting my insurance were diligent stating orthodontia wouldnt be OK but since I went through and did a small exam/buffering, ended up being OK. PS. They emphasize they are open Saturdays! It's a good thing I love my current DDS or the visit I had today may have swayed me over to their office. PPS. I didn't catch my dental assistant's name but she rocked and made my visit all the more great as a very first timer. read more

Dr. Potter has the experience that makes you feel comfortable. Initially, when I first came to this dental location, I felt a bit uneasy as their schedule was a bit off and they did not have a dental hygienist that was available to do the cleaning, x-rays, etc. So I had a new dentist that they just hired take on the task of cleaning... let's just say I've had better. In any case, I had to come back because of my sweet habits... On my second visit Dr. Potter was my dentist and he was pretty awesome. We talked about life and motorcycles and he made me a great recommendation on movies. "The Wild One" I will see them again because Dr. Potter is really good. read more

I've been to the office once, for a routine exam and cleaning, and was very impressed by everyone I dealt with. Glenda, queen of the front desk, is especially wonderful. Dr Potter does the cleaning himself, which I really liked, and he was friendly, funny, and fully professional. I've also dealt with them several times by phone on behalf of a friend with an urgent problem, and I was impressed with how helpful and accommodating they are. Great location, too. If I could leave negative stars, I would! James Potter started numbing my mouth before his assistant was in the room. I ended up swallowing numbing meds & when I stated that my throat was numb - he said "you'll thank me for that later" as he patted my shoulder. I was just trying not to have a panic attack. He did an AWFUL job on my dental work, even raised his voice at his assistant during the process. Didn't have time to finish everything before sending me or the door & said they'd finish in another TEN DAYS! I let them know that I was in pain & something felt off... they blew me off & said there was nothing they could do for me. THEN.... Dr. Potter has been my family's dentist for many years and he is, quite frankly, the best dentist I have personally experienced the care of in my life. He fixed my husband's teeth and cured our wariness of dentistry in general. My kids love going to the dentist. He's so amiable and good with them. He's also really cool, honestly. I love talking to him. He's been doing this for quite a while and he has the easy nature of a master of his craft. I needed a crown and I decided to go ahead and do a gold crown (I wanted a "pirate tooth") and Dr. Potter was delighted to do it because when he was in dental school, there was a big emphasis on the art of making and installing gold crowns. I put off getting that crown for SO LONG before I was in the care of this dentist. Very pleased with the results. I asked him if he'd do another tooth that didn't need a crown, but just for cosmetic reasons and he said he could do that but it'd be more like a veneer. Then I asked him about vampire teeth caps and all sorts of things. He is truly creative and if you have an idea for something (let me preface this with: I have a lot of piercings and tattoos), I am darn near certain he can help you attain the "look" you're going for. The staff is friendly and really works hard to be accommodating. It's a very nice office. The hygienist/assistant is very gentle and really great with kids. I hope she's proud of herself. She does a great job. One time I had an appointment and there was a lady with her newborn baby in the next room. I learned Dr. Potter does molds/plaster casts of their little hands for parents to always have. The mom let me watch the process and I observed a beautifully human moment. Makes me wish I'd done that with my kids. Dr. Potter is the Mr. Rogers of dentists here in Austin and that's just about the highest of compliments I can give to a person. read more

By default I went to this dentist since they were open on a Saturday when an issue came up. They ended up doing my root canal - felt everything during. The crown they installed came off twice in 2 years. The last time they reset it no one informed me there was decay. Now for the 3rd time I felt the crown was loose. I elected to try a new dentist. No high and mighty dentist or hygienists here. This office was AWESOME! I have a serious phobia of dentists and haven't been in a long while. They're not judgy and completely understanding. I let them know about my fears and that it's been a while. They went slow, talked through everything, and really put me at ease. No scolding, they're just happy your there and taking a step towards good health. I initially came here to see Dr. Potter based on friend recommendations and yelp reviews, but ended up with Dr. Ding. He's fantasic! He wasn't rushed at all. He really took time to just sit back, talk and answer all my questions. I'm in my late 20s and Dr. Ding is younger - it was nice to have someone who was closer in age and relates. Highly recommend Dr. Ding and also his hygienist Caroline! She was super sweet and gentle through the cleaning. She knew I was nervous so she took care, talked through everything, and went slow with me. Dr, Potter is ridiculously wonderful. My husband sheered off part of his front tooth last night, the night before an important presentation, and he really didn't want to show up looking like Jethro Clampett. So in desperation we called Dr. Potter after hours for help. Dr. Potter made arrangements to meet my husband early this morning prior to his presentation. When my husband arrived, Dr. Potter and his team (Angie and Glenda) were waiting. Within 20 minutes, my husband had a temporary crown, Mapquest directions to his presentation from Potter's office, and no longer looked like a Hillbilly. Can't get kinder... but I decided to go to different dental specialists. I decided to go to an endodontist, McGuire, for my root canal... which isn't always required but it was a molar and it is safer to go to a specialist. SOOO happy I did. McGuire rocks! I had major problems with the antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs not working. Unfortunately they weren't able to help solve the problem... so I started looking elsewhere. I'm happy I did because I found Rose Dental which so far I'm sticking with for my regular dental needs. I think the office personnel and Dr. James Potter are very nice, but I was just looking for more than that. Dr. Potter and his staff are the best around. They are very professional and friendly, making the dentist office seem far more pleasant than it usually is. My husband and I have both had great experiences with them time and time again. He has had more work done than me, and after shaking with fear in the waiting room the first time he went in - they have made him feel perfectly at ease. Dr. Potter seems to have a sense for nervous clients, and can talk you off the ledge before he starts working. They use x-ray machines so high tech that you won't even know they did anything until a crystal clear image of your teeth pops up on their computer screen. Dr. Potter is an excellent dentist. Not only does he do a lot of the teeth cleanings himself, Dr. Potter really guides you through proper oral hygiene and is not afraid to call you out on your bad habits. I also had all four of my wisdom teeth extracted here. After merely one day, I experienced no pain, swelling, or bleeding whatsoever. You can tell Dr. Potter loves his job and wants what is best for his patients. I highly recommend him. Glenda, the receptionist lady, is extremely friendly and remembers you by name. Not sure if she still works there but she definitely made going to dreadful routine cleanings more enjoyable. The office space itself is small yet clean and well-kept. As for an ideal time, try to schedule your appointment first thing in the morning because sometimes Dr. Potter is caught up with emergency dental situations that prevents him from seeing you at the designated time slot. We love Dr. Potter! I have always hated dentists but after coming here I never mind my appointments. Dr. Potter taught me the right way to floss, and that seems dumb, but I bet there are a lot of people who are not doing it correctly. Now I just come in for cleanings with the best dental hygienist Caroline! A tip to share, I also switched from a manual brush to a sonic-care and that has made it SO easy since it tells you how long to brush, and when to switch to the next section of teeth. One of the greatest parts about coming here is the availability of Saturday appointments. Jinna and I both work all week and I do not know about you but using PTO for health visits is not cool. They also are available for emergencies on Saturday so even if you do not have an appointment they will do their best to fit you in so people are not in pain or uncomfortable. Dr. Potter successfully removed the titanium implant surgically drilled into my upper jawbone by Clear Choice because of his poor judgement that the mold he was screwing into the implant for three hours straight just might be a faulty, ill fitting mold from a bad impression. He kept bragging about the effectiveness of his anesthesia that kept me from screaming as he dislodged my implant from my jaw bone. Potter is only good from overlooking the cleaning that his hygienists do. Anything more, his is not qualified and he is too arrogant and greedy to act as such. I think of him every time I run my tongue in the empty space where a tooth could have been. read more

I absolutely LOVE the staff at Gateway Dental. Today I went in for my first time at this place. I had a routine cleaning, fluoride treatment and another appointment later the same day to fill the gap in my front teeth. This doctor just wants to scare you so that he can make money even when there is no need for procedures. I asked to show me my wisdom teeth cavity before filling but he kept giving lame excuses. When I asked for 2nd time to show me, he lost temper and shouted at me - you don't need to see as you are not a doctor. Really, if you cant show me any evidence how can you fill the cavity. I am SO upset. I just called to make my cleaning appointment and found out that Dr. Ding no longer works there. The receptionist told me that Dr. Potter had him sign an agreement saying he wouldn't see any of the Gateway Dental patients until after April 2017. I asked what if I officially was no longer a patient at Gateway Dental and she told me it didn't matter and that I would have to wait until after April of next year. I am so sad. I love Dr. Ding. It's so hard to find a dentist you click with. I have seen Dr. Potter before and we did not click well at all. I cannot support this office in the future. The staff makes agreements they do not keep. The dental office is a hole in the wall in a strip mall. The staff will tell you anything to book an appointment. The dentist Mr. Potter is mediocre at best. Very uncomfortable while he's working on you, no consideration for the patients comfort. My last appointment I was in pain for a tooth extraction. After the procedure some jaw bone spurs came up. I arrived on time waited an hour to get in the chair. Finally when I saw Mr. Potter he said the procedure was going to take an hour and if wouldn't mind coming back; I noticed a full waiting room and figured he'd rather make money then alieve my tooth situation and pain. read more

I stumbled upon this place last Saturday, due to a molar that cracked- this was the only place open and it was an emergency. The people in the office are nice enough. The dentist will talk your ear off. However, I went in for a normal check-up cleaning, as a new patient. I have this recurring problem that any other of the dentists that I have seen in the past have not been able to diagnose. Dr. Potter thought it might be a fractured tooth and wanted to take out a cavity that was already there to take a look around. So I went in for him to do that, just to have him remove the cavity, say that its not a cracked tooth and fill it back up again, without any further diagnosis. He exclaimed that my recurring problem could be just food impaction. Hm, wonder why the many other dentist, endodontist, periodontist and other specialist, didn't think of that, yet however found definite problems upon testing, just inconclusive. My concerns about Dr. Potter is that he may have done a procedure on me that I really didn't need just to get the money. Another concern is that he's an older gentleman, not necessarily making him a bad dentist, but that he's not as up to date with newer technologies. He still flourided my teeth. I haven't had that done since I was a kid! And to top it all off, a couple months later, the cavity that he filled just fell out! Definitely not going back here. read more

Doctor Potter is outstanding! I called today, a Saturday, at 1:30 PM because I was in pain. I didn't think there would be any chance they would get me in on the same day but I was desperate. The receptionist, Olga, was very friendly and willing to help me. I admitted to her, that even though I brush and floss daily, it had been a while since I had seen a dentist and I was embarrassed. Olga reassured me that it would be alright and scheduled me for a 3:30 PM appointment. She also warned me that I might not be seen right at my appointment time and that it would only be an exam because they were squeezing me in. When I arrived, I received a warm greeting by Olga, who gave me a first time patient package, which to my surprise was straight forward and only three pages long. The waiting room is comfortable and neat. I did have to wait, but it wasn't long. Since I was a last minute appointment at the end of the day on Saturday I did not expect to really see the dentist. I figured a tech would perform the x-ray and then the dentist would come in and say schedule her for an appointment next month. Boy were my expectations wrong. Doctor Potter greeted as soon as he finished the client ahead of me and said he'd be right with me. He returned quickly and took me into the room himself. He asked me what brought me in and he really listened. I explained that I was really nervous and embarrassed because I knew I should have seen a dentist sooner. His reply echoed Olga's and he said not to worry I was taking care of it now. After the exam, he said that x-ray and exam pointed to pain coming from two different teeth and rather than charging ahead and doing an unnecessary procedure he recommended I wait a couple of days before he performed a root canal. He told me how to manage my pain and gave me prescription. Then he told me that if the pain became worse to call him he'd come in and take care of me, even if it was on Sunday. Also, he said we would come up with a plan to get everything taken care of and he hugged me at the end of the appointment. Even though it was my first visit he and his staff made me feel like a long time loyal patient who they really wanted to help. I have never felt so comfortable at any doctor's office. I am now, and forever will be, a dedicated patient of Doctor Potter and I will tell anyone who is looking for a dentist to visit him first. I found Dr. Potter last year when I had a dental emergency early on a Saturday morning and needed a dentist that was available. I have been seeing him ever since because he is simply the best. I've had terrible experiences with dentists in the past. That has kept me out of dentists' offices for years and I'm definitely paying for that now BUT I feel relaxed and at ease when I go see Dr. Potter because I know my visit is going to be pain-free. He's very kind and funny and it's obvious that he knows what he's doing and really cares about his patients. Gateway Dental is a great practice, the staff and the facility are wonderful. I have never had a better understanding of the procedures about to take place. Doctor Ding explained what was going to happen before the procedure which is something no other dentist has ever done. I was relaxed and at ease Something that no other dentist had ever offered. The assistant Amber is knowledgeable and efficient. I drive all the way from Corpus Christi just to give you an idea how lovely the practice is. Doctor Potter goes above and beyond for his clients. I don't mind the 400 miles it's worth it in my book. I have recommend this practice to all my family and friends in and around the Austin area. Looking forward to my annual visit! read more

This place is awesome. 3years without a dentist visit resulted in 2 teeth broken off which ended with 2 abscesses. Called on a Saturday and front desk person said come on in. I arrive at noon and waited an hour while they were on lunch. Saw Dr Potter and not once did I feel like he was in a rush. He explained my options and suggested to have the 2 teeth extracted. He numbed me up good and pulled them at a cost of 280.00out of pocket to me for my insurance. He told me he would like me to come back for a consult to go over some other issues he saw. I said I will make an appointment and he said they'd be glad to have me. I was very impressed with Dr Potter and the staff. He was honest and up front. He handled me with care because I'm such a big baby when it comes to dental work. I highly recommend him and as a plus, they have Saturday hrs. read more

Dr. Potter is very nice and I had a very nice cleaning, but he told me that I had two cavities that needed to be filled and that I needed to get my wisdom teeth out. I got a second opinion, who saw no cavities on X-ray or exam and told me there was no reason to remove my wisdom teeth in my mid-20s if I had no discomfort from them. Two years later, I have since moved and seen another dentist, who also didn't see cavities. He also told me that if my wisdom teeth still aren't bothering me at this point, they're probably staying put. I'd go here again for a cleaning if I were still in the area, but nothing diagnostic. When someone recommends surgery to a symptom-free healthy young person without explaining what the risk/benefit would be, I give a little side eye. Of course every doctor has different preferences and maybe Dr. Potter just prefers a more aggressive preventative strategy, but that would need to be explained for me to be able to make an informed decision. I didn't get the impression from him that the wisdom teeth removal would be elective. read more

I have been wanting to write a review for Dr. Potter for years! For one, because I checked these Yelp reviews before going in the first time. It helped sway me and I am so grateful. Since I was little I have had so much dental work done. I have had numerous bad experiences so was never crazy about dentist appointments. My most recent experience before coming here included going in for a cleaning and having a hygienist cut my gums up so bad that I cried in the chair and they bled for 2 whole days. I almost needed stitches from a cleaning! Needless to say, my anxiety level was high when I first went to see Dr. Potter 3-4 years ago. Thankfully, he is amazing!
