We were relieved after a long morning of driving and hiking to find a nice place for good food like this! Despite the crowd, service was quick - the staff up front were VERY efficient at handling more customers than most staff can deal with. And the food came out of the kitchen hot and fast. The sandwiches were good, although portion sizes were not as large as in some restaurants. The only real disappointment for us was the use of almond (?) flavor in the chocolate chip cookies - ugh! I wanted to like this place. I got here around 10:30 to get lunch but apparently they don't start serving lunch until 11:00. Okay, so I'll get breakfast- either way that works. I had the chorizo and eggs. Despite not serving lunch until 11:00 they manage to accomodate the request of a local to order a salad before 11:00. Um? The food was fine. The potatoes that came with the chorizo and egg were oversalted. I put everything in the tortilla the plate came with to make a burrito. Decent, but nothing special. The coffee was very good. The service was... well... my water was never refilled. If I hadn't gone to the counter to pay, I don't know if I would have ever left. I really do want to like this place more because I like Patagonia and visit often but this place felt like there was just something missing. I bought a chocolate chip cookie to go and the texture was great but the cookie seemed slightly salty. I don't think I'll be back- there's better places to eat in town I suspect. Patagonia, AZ. Wine capital of the state. But - sorry guys - not much to write home about... It's tiny (think one three block-long street) and really not that special. So that was a little bit of a let down when we got there on a Wednesday afternoon, after a super scenic (and bumpy!) drive through the Coronado National Park. But we were hungry. Like starving. Here comes Gathering Ground. In our vision field, that is. Almost surprising in such a little hole of a town, GG is a classic coffee shop with all the usual suspects - coffee and tea drinks, mochas, lattes, cookies, scones and co. And a lunch/dinner menu from which I picked a hummus wrap. Because sweets just wouldn't do it this time. Since there was no A/C (really?!?!? In AZ?!?!? Geezzzz....), nobody else in the store and - I have to admit - since I was a little cranky (hungry!!!!) I wasn't expecting much. I watched the guy prepare our fare from a remote table; he was singing in tune to country songs. I was dozing off. Well - you know what?!?!? That was damn good. And not only because I was damn starving. My wrap was huge and all the veggies inside, super fresh. And tasty. Lots of avocado, tomatoes, peppers....a real treat that I engulfed in a few minutes. After spending the day hiking along The Arizona Trail a bit and then hopping in the car to go explore ghost towns Harshaw, Washington Camp, Duquesne, and Lochiel we were ready for a bite to eat when we got back to Patagonia. Gathering Grounds was the perfect stop. Friendly staff and great selection of food and coffee. The soup, breads, and blueberry muffins were very good. It was a casual and relaxing place to just hang out at the end of the day. This is a great little all round bistro, expresso bar, breakfast joint, lunch place, bar. We found this place online and decided to try it for breakfast. We had our dog with us, and there was a table outside that we could sit at...and a large water bowl titled 'Doggie Java'. Ordered the Bisquits & Gravy and it came with 2 eggs and some potato hashbrowns. The meal was absolutely wonderful! Service was great and no complaints here! We stopped here on our way through the AZT. Sadly, they were out of (local, grass-fed) hamburgers at the time. Fortunately, their sandwiches are quite good (recommend the club sandwich on croissant) and the potato salad is fantastic. The chocolate malt was a treat. I have not had the coffee at this place, only a few delicious baked goods and an average vegetarian sandwich. The baked goodies I enjoyed on two different occasions included a chocolate-chip-cherry muffin, a morning glory muffin, and a buttery oatmeal scone. The muffins are huge and have crispy tops, which I love. The average lunch I had was a vegetarian sandwich consisting of a thin slice of havarti cheese, hummus, avocado, sprouts, cucumber, tomato I think, and way too much mayonnaise and yellow mustard. They squirted out the end of the sandwich as I bit into it, getting all over my hands, but maybe I'm just a messy eater. The bread was just sliced whole-grain bread you could find at Costco, I imagine. The thing I could not eat was the side salad. The greens were not fresh, and the house balsamic vinaigrette had a metallic taste that was very off-putting. The quiche looked really good. Perhaps, I should have ordered that.
