Went out this evening together with my family to celebrate our grand parents turning 80 years old this year. To be honest, I think this is one of the best dinner experiences I have had ever in my life! The atmosphere was relaxing, at the same time as the place was quite busy. The volume level was perfect, and the staff was super friendly and gave excellent service. As we were 12 people for dinner, we chose their option of sharing starter, main courses and dessert which was made out of a different assortment of their most popular dishes. Not only was a big variety of different meat and side dishes that made our taste buds go wild, but the amount of food was enough to make each and everyone full to the limit and beyond. Personally, this was a huge plus for me, as I hate going out to eat and getting only small portions, paying a lot of money for it, and then leave the restaurant hungry. These guys give you a real bang for the buck in terms of food quantity with this sharing concept of their menu. As to mention some of the dishes, the chorizo, the blood sausage, the meat, the tuna and the mashed potatoes were all out of heaven. As for dessert, go for the dulce de leche cheesecake, even thoigh you think that their chokolate cake is a safe choice. In this case it wasn't, and I am glad I took our servants word for it. Only small negative aspect of this experience wss the price. However, if you are hungry for quality food that will give your taste buds a trip to heaven, it is worth every penny. What a terrible experience. Booked a meal for our daughters 21st birthday and a catalogue of bad service from start to finish. The guy serving us had lost his voice so couldn't communicate with us other than whispering in our ear. We sat waiting for 40 minutes waiting for drinks and had to go and ask at the bar and alert the manager to get them. They'd obviously been sat at the bar for 30 mins so were just water. Despite alerting the manager to the poor service it got far worse. When the food finally arrived the order was wrong, missing items and steaks wrong. My daughters order was completely wrong so had to wait for it to be re-done and by the time it arrived our food was cold and items were still missing. One of the fillet steaks was totally inedible. Again we spoke to the manager who just kept saying he would sort things but made no intervention to make our experience less than awful. The items missing did eventually turn up with some hot but most cold and inedible. The whole experience was shockingly bad and we paid the bill just to get out of there. How you can get so much wrong is beyond me. You ruined our night, you ruined the birthday celebration, the manager just was not bothered. If you're charging those prices then up your game as McDonald's have better service than you. Truly awful read more

They have different restaurants with the decor all different within London, each restaurant has a slightly different menu and cooks the steak a bit different.. The restaurant is great for a romantic meal the atmosphere is calm. You may take 2hrs + on a meal and enjoy the live band music that might be playing in the restaurant.. From the glamorous entrance, complete with chandelier & white lilies, you proceed down into a moody nightclub atmosphere: so camp you almost expect to see Marlene or Liza emerge from the shadows. Instead quietly discrete waiters, who teach you to choose your beef from a mixed platter of the best flown in daily from Argentina. This was a pub in the 18th century when Charlotte Street was known as Charlottensrasse, because there were so many German residents in the area - inc Karl Marx. Food was really nice. From empanadas to steak were all excellent. Service was horrendous from beginning to end. We waited about a half an hour to place our orders. We told the waiter we had been waiting a long time just to order and were hungry and he didn't apologize and just ignored our comment. He proceeded to let us know he had to explain the menu because it would be confusing to us...because we wouldn't know what ceviche or an empanada was. Yes we live under a rock. Our college degrees did not equip us to read English. You cannot see me but I just did an eye roll just thinking about this. We ordered quite a bit and at the end of our order, he goes "You guys don't want any greens or veggies?" My husband replies I think we ordered enough...he looks at us in a shameful manner so we felt bad and ordered a mixed salad...By the way this has never happened to us ever in any restaurant. Anyhow we wait another ten minutes to get served complimentary bread seconds before our appetizers come out...we were thinking, why wasn't this sent out while we were waiting earlier during that first half an hour? Our empty water cups stayed empty for long amounts of time as we tried to grab our waiters attention for more water. My husband's entree comes out shortly after our appetizer but I am missing my entree. We flag down our waiter and I asked if my dish was still coming out...he looked at me in astonishment and said "oh you want that now?" I'm thinking "yeah...it would be great if my entree came out the same time as my husbands." He doesn't apologize or tell me what's happening and walks away. Our water cups still empty. I flag down another waitress and tell her "hey if you guys never got my order don't fire one up now, I'm just going to split up my husbands entree and share his." Anyhow, we split the steak. It was very nice. And we asked for the check from our waiter. He doesn't apologize for not getting my order in or all the terrible mishaps throughout the service. He says sure and nods but spends ten minutes walking back and forth attending to all the tables around us but our needs....at least he was consistent...the whole night the theme was about passive aggressiveness and non existent service. Gotta give him that. We really did not want to feel aggravated any longer so I took matter into my own hands. I grabbed the check and took it upstairs to settle it. Management was quite nice asking me about our night and patiently listened to our experience. The manager tried to rectify our issues and showed professionalism. The interior design is great. The customer services were excellent too. I can't doubt that. They explained different kind of steaks available, which were shown on a board. I think that is a brilliant idea, especially when majority of us were not sure what the differences. It is definitely value for money but only for the London price. The steak was great but the sauces ordered were nothing special. In fact we were a little bit disappointed. The waiter suggested to give us a surprise sides with our steak. He ordered a good number of sides to be shared between the 6 of us. In fact some of us couldn't finish our steak & sides. I don't think he over ordered the sides but I think we the steak was too big for us. If I've never had tasted the local Kerry steak in Ireland... I would have given Gaucho a higher rating. after my first review- in which I was fascinated with the food, I went 4 times and the experience went from bad to worse! I assume there is a mantra at Gaucho that makes all receptionist frown, treat you with an attitude, or make you wait for over 5 minutes to be looked at (one answering 2 phone calls and the other one went inside once I showed up) they took your coat like it was a huge favour, allow you to get a table after checking you out if you suit the surrounding. I don't need this kind of attitude when I want to have a meal and pay 200 quid for lunch !!! the least I can ask for is a fresh food and someone to show me to my seat with a smile! I know I am asking for too much- I am demanding something has changed in terms of food as well- I can put up with nasty reception in order to have succulent piece of steak and salad - but even their speciality didn't live to my expectations or to what I have experienced in my first time there it is a shame but after 4 horrible times eating there I am not going to give this place any more chances p.s. I've been here four times now, and had a great meal every time. There's a lot of snarkiness about Gaucho, since it's been popular for a long time - and many other steak places in London have cropped up with fantastic meats and perhaps a fresher outlook. But I've had no complaints whatsoever about this place. From a client lunch first time round, to two dates I've had following that and a further meeting with a party of five. Being greeted at the door, with all your coasts and bags whisked away with a smile, then walking down to be met and either walked to the bar or your table, is a simple joy - but one that many places screw up. Plus, it's worth noting that on the first date, it was a last minute booking with no problem - and the second we pushed back by about an hour in the end as we were having too much fun drinking cocktails round the corner first ;) I've always thought the venue itself would do well as a club, with classic Gaucho cowprint everywhere complimented by fancy glass and mirrored highlights. Sitting in the bar with a drink (the bloody mary here is the best in town) isn't painful, and the food is just divine. Though a full explanation of the cuts of meat isn't really necessary for a carnivore like me, it's a nice touch. I usually go for the smallest fillet, and haven't had a bad one yet. I'll always get that with the sweet potato chips with chorizo and humitas (little corn packets with creamed sweetcorn inside - just delicious), plus some bearnaise. Hell. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'll rarely get a starter, as the meat is so filling, but both scallop dishes are ok. I'd skip this course all together though, and stick to a dessert. Both the cheese - and cheesecakes - are usually brilliant. read more

Can't go wrong with Gaucho. I've been to the one on Swallow street maybe five or six times. I love it. This one is cool too. Not that different, really. Just kind of different. The music was a little too loud for my old man friend that I was having dinner with. He kept putting his hand up to his ear, trying to hear was I was saying. But that's to be expected when you are over 35. Everything just starts to weaken. I can't wait. The only complaint I have about Gaucho and maybe just about people in London in general is that they absolutely pronounce filet the wrong way. I get that British English and American English are two different things and I am usually okay with the pronunciation of most things on either side. But I really don't like the way that you guys say filet. Fill-it. Fill-it-up! Fill-it-up-to-the-top! It's fill-ay. It's French. Just say it right, please. This is probably why 45% of Scottish people wanted to get away from you guys. This very reason. Or, you know, a bunch of other important reasons. read more

Great Steak, great choice of wines. Each Steak on its own is between £20 and £40 depending on the cut. They bring up a board that has all the uncooked cuts of meat to show you what to expect. You can choose from 5 or 6 different cuts and 3 different sizes/weights. The side dishes are pretty good too, 3 between 2 people is plenty with a Steak. The decor is sophisticated and contemporary, although If I said there was cow hide (not sure if its real) on the walls you'd probably think that was tacky, but it seems to work. Everything else is clean lines and simple and the lighting is low. Its worth mentioning the wine list too. It being an Argentinian restaurant I expected there to be a few bottles of Malbec but there are two whole pages of the wine list taken up with Malbecs. There's plenty of other choice too if Malbec is not your thing. There is also a Sommelier on hand if you need a hand choosing from the extensive list. I've been to 2 Gauchos in London and havent had a bad experience, the best steak I've had outside of the USA. Its a classy, pricy, meaty, tasty night out. read more

I have been to Gaucho a few times now and every time it has delivered! The first time I went ,I fell in love with the Medallion Lomo medium rare. The Lomo is the tenderest fillet beef and the waiter recommended it because I told him I wanted the softest one. The medallion is the "smaller" size, but at 225g, it was perfect for me. My husband had the Ancho rib-eye steak but even though the marbled flavor was good, it was a bit chewy and not as wonderfully yummy as my Lomo. What I really like in a steak is when it's so perfectly cooked that it brings out the flavour of the meat itself, which perfectly describes the Lomo (I also like melt-in-your-mouth tender steak, which this was too). The next time I went I tried the Churrasco de Lomo, I think it was called, which is big and should be shared by two people. It was marinated for 48 hours in garlic, parsley and olive oil. This was also delicious, but I think is more for people who like to taste spices in their steak rather than just the flavour of the meat. My friend who I shared it with was in heaven. We also ordered some kind of strawberry mocktails with sugar on the rim which were delicious! Gaucho decor is a bit cheesy with the cow print everywhere, but this is the best steak I've had in London and I love it! This branch of Gaucho is easy to miss at the quieter end of Charlotte Street. The restaurant is below street level, and was impressively laid out, but the acoustics bounced around, making it unpleasantly loud. I was trying to have a romantic meal, not really the place. Great if you are with a group, especially if seated at one of the large round tables. We had to sit briefly at the bar before getting a table. I did not really enjoy my Bloody Mary as it was massively over seasoned. However, when I failed to drink it, I was not charged. The steak and wine were delicious. I do try and not eat in chain restaurants, but it is not always possible. Whilst the atmosphere can be impersonal, the food in Gaucho is good, and well priced. read more

Cool decor, good service, but not one for vegetarians - you get a display of the uncooked steaks before selecting what you want to eat. Having enjoyed the Gaucho Grill many a time in Manchester I knew I was on to a safe bet taking a fussy friend here. We arrived late (after being lost on the tube, new in town!), it wasn't a problem luckily, we where shown to the bar area and ordered drinks whilst we waited for our table to be ready, there was a great atmosphere, then we where shown to our table, it soon became apparent that they where short of staff on the restuarant floor as the service became quite unpleasant and ruined our dining experience. Went here on Friday night with my nephew Adam and his lovely girlfriend Zoe to kick off a weekend of 18th birthday celebrations. After much debate B binned all my other suggestions, such as The Hawksmoor, and insisted this was by far the best destination for a young fella's birthday bash. As we stepped into the reception area from a bustling Friday night Charlotte Street and waited while a couple were politely told the restaurant was fully booked all night it was smiles all round as we surveyed the monochrome surroundings. Not the kind of place I would normally frequent but definitely ticked all the boxes for an 18th birthday celebration. Housed in a dimly lit but stylish basement the restaurant has two levels and I would recommend the lower lever over the upper level which is opposite the kitchen. There are some booth type arrangements for larger parties at the edges of the room with round tables elsewhere and funky swivel chairs covered in black and white "cowhide". Good use of the space meant the room was buzzy yet still fairly intimate, put me in mind of a New York style of restaurant more than anything else. The staff were professional, helpful and friendly for a very busy Friday night. The cocktails we ordered hit the spot and loosened things up nicely as we talked through the menu. We were here for a steak dinner but the menu was pretty wide ranging and there was a good looking selection for those not looking to gorge themselves on beef - on reflection later B commented that perhaps going off piste and trying some of the more standard South American dishes would have really kicked the tyres on this place; I suspect it would not have disappointed so perhaps another time. Ordering was actually helped by the by the bit of "theatre" provided by the waitress who appeared at our table with a chopping board laden with examples of the various cuts of beef on offer which she then proceeded to talk us through and most usefully gave us an idea of a good cooking time. Sounds obvious but if you have a cut with a marbling of fat you want a bit of cooking time to soften it up so bleu might not be the best way to go. After much debate we ended up with a couple of medium rare fillets and a couple of medium sirloins with some sweet potato with chorizo and standard chips on the side. We all plumped for the smallest weight available which I found to be plenty without being a gut buster. The fillet is the most popular choice in the restaurant and you can see why, lovely piece of meat which really did melt in the mouth. The sirloin was less successful but was still pretty tasty - B's comment that the onglet at The Garrick was on a par said a lot to me! We washed this meat feast down with bottles of white and red from the cheaper end of the wine list, the Gaucho selection, which kick off at £23 a bottle. We also had some nice fizzy stuff which was significantly more expensive but you only reach 18 once I kept telling myself throughout the evening. After chatting to our very helpful waitress we ordered a plate of five of their cheeses from Neal's Yard to share as a taster while we summoned up the strength for dessert. Adam was raving about the Stilton and I am always fond of a sliver of Cornish Yard; the accompanying chutney was also pretty tasty and a fine compliment to the cheese. The ladies plumped for the toffee and coffee cheesecake while we boys thought we had decided to sit it out until some complimentary chocolate mousse arrived. All good but you would hope so at these prices. In fact that would pretty much sum up my thoughts on Gaucho; the food is good but not outstanding or trying to break any new ground. You are paying a healthy premium for some decent quality product in a "destination" type setting. We had a really lovely evening and it did just what it said on the tin. Looking around at the other punters and the decor, which was all part of the fun, I can see why this chain is such hit with the city boys and girls who seemed to be out in force. This is possibly becoming my favourite Gaucho in London, great decor, lighting and ambiance, the service is always impeccable even if it was 110% busy. Me and the Girlfriend both had fillet steak with a total of 5 sides, yes we had been starving our selfs for 5 days for the sides. With my goddaughters' landmark 18th birthday coming up, and her favourite meal being steak, her mother and I knew that the place for us to go to celebrate this special occasion had to be Gaucho's. I made contact with Guest Relations Manager Luis Alvarez, who assured me that he would make it a night to remember for our birthday girl. How right he was. From the moment we were checked in by the friendly person at the door, all of the staff made a point of greeting the birthday girl and wishing her a very happy 18th - not just happy birthday, but that they knew it was a landmark day for her. Our 3 generational party of six were seated at our table and had the various menu choices explained to us, including a demonstration of the various cuts of beef - the 7 year old present was slightly confused as to why the meat wasn't cooked, to the amusement of all. Gaucho have a Sunday roast set menu available all day, which had attractive pricing. But we were here for something special, so we all went a la carte. Our waiter Alibek proved his worth again, offering advice as to what cut of meat would work well with how we prefer it cooked - as someone who likes steak well done, he offered no judgement, but rather the appropriate advice. And yum! Was he right! The steak cut is generous - I ordered 400gm which I thought would be 'medium' size, but it's a plentiful helping and although I somehow managed to demolish it all, there wasn't any room left for dessert. The steak was just perfect, we all agreed, whether we had tried the sirloin, the rib eye or the fillet steak. Alibek also helped us select the sauce or marinade that went with our selection. Kathleen got another surprise in the form of a glass of bubbles (she was 18 now, after all) and a special birthday dessert. What a treat! I mentioned that I didn't have dessert, but I did finish with a dessert wine - a very enjoyable Riesling. We all had a fabulous time at Gauchos and we waddled our way home after a fantastic meal. I think the birthday girl herself summed it up best when she said her stomach would remember the meal for the rest of her life. Great venue. Nothing really argentine about the place other than the menu. Like the pao de queijo they bring out with the bread which is typically Brazilian. Overall everyone in the group was pleased. I had the ribeye everyone else had the chorizo and the fillet. The sides were all good I'd pass next time on the mashed potatoes but the shrooms, spinach and sweet potato chips were great. Good place to take a date or biz dinner. The location is generally just a nice side-effect if you're meeting up with people you haven't seen in a while. But I mean, wow, the Gaucho made the vegetarian in me want some serious steak. I have to admit I sat there with big eyes when one of the waiters arrived at our table with an enormous wooden plate having different sized slices of raw meat on it. Made sense though. Explaining quite vividly which cut to take. I had the vegetarian option, truffle tortellini. Which was ok-ish, but nothing spectacular. Tried a bit of my friends' steak and should maybe have considered one of them, too. The wines were excelled. Especially the sparkling chardonnay. I loved the atmosphere, even though it was quite dark in there, it added worked well with the black tables and all. One of our favourite restaurants especially as my husband loves steak!! I cany really fault this place other than its pricey but you pay for what you get. Excellent service and excellent food. They bring out a selection of meats, different cuts for you to choose from and help recommend the best option for you (rather than just sell you the biggest steak) they also recommend sides to go with it (you have to buy separately). We have been many times and never once disappointed. Love the decor as well cowhide everywhere with low lighting to set the mood. A meat lover's paradise. This Argentine steakhouse chain is well known in London for producing a good steak. Personally, I find it very hard to find a good steak in London but Gaucho does not disappoint. We had the Gaucho sampler, which is four whole steaks cooked to perfection (I recommend medium-rare). A bit much for two people, but the steak was the best I have tasted in the UK. Their wine list is very comprehensive, if a bit South American focused. Of course a good Malbec goes great with the meaty fare. Vegetarians stay away. read more

I visited the Charlotte Street Gauchos for my birthday and couldn't have been happier with the service! When shown to our table our waitress had already written a birthday card for me and they quizzed me to find out what my favourite cocktail was. As it was my birthday, they arranged for the gentleman behind the bar to come and show me how to make my favourite cocktail at our table. The food was fabulous and the atmosphere was amazing. My wife and I chose to celebrate ten years from the day we first met at the brand new Gaucho on Charlotte Street. The day we were there was actually their first day open. The place is very tastefully (no pun intended) decorated and is based on a black and white theme. When we arrived (without a booking), we were greeted very well at the door and asked whether we wanted to do a wine tasting session before going to our table. We declined this offer, which in hind sight, was probably a mistake. We were offered a small table for two with chairs facing each other. As we find this arrangement to be not very cosy (it was a romantic celebration after all), we asked to be allocated a bigger table where we could sit next to each other instead of opposite each other. We were then seated on a great round table for six people, which we thought was very nice. The menu is extensive, obviously very meat based, as you would expect at a steakhouse, but with other options too for those who do not fancy meat. A girl by the name of Bruna brought a selection of meat cuts out on a chopping board and explained to us how the meat is cut and cooked, which we found very useful. The meat was arranged in cuts of different sizes and this made it easy for us to decide whether we wanted a small, medium or large cut. The wine selection is extensive, if pricey, with bottles ranging from £20 to £200+. Despite being focussed on South American produce, I would have liked there to be European wines on the menu along with South American ones. The meat we were served can best be described as divine and certainly nothing in our experience touches it for sheer tenderness and flavour. They were steaks as steaks should be and at about £20 for a 225g cut, I feel they represent very good value! All in all, our evening was extremely nice thanks to a superb dining experience. read more

My son's 18th. Just him and his elder sister, his mum, me and our 10-yr old. 4.5 people. Went on a Sunday lunchtime. Empty; and I mean completely. Not very surprised when I saw the prices. Cheapest house champagne £70, cheapest wine £42, meat not cheap but everything is extra: every vegetable dish, sauce, etc. Ended up spending well over £300 before service which, for a simple lunch, was way OTT.
