California's highway rest areas are universally magical, disappointing, sketchy, lovely, and weird. We would stop at them occasionally on cross-state trips when I was little, mainly to use the bathroom, but as I grew older and drove long distances myself, I never really understood their value. Why not stop somewhere you could also buy gas and food? But then I got into this habit of doing the San Francisco-to-Los Angeles trip on the 5 in the middle of the night, and rest areas became essential, because many 24/7 gas stations' restrooms magically go out of order in the middle of the night. Since the pandemic, I've been pretty annoyed by how many of the rest areas along the 5 have been simultaneously closed for long periods of time. I understand if they're doing major renovations, but Caltrans should schedule the construction so that at least some of the rest areas are open along the same route. Rest areas on other freeways feel like a bonus, like that random one on the 280. Who uses that one? Why? I know, I know; I already told you why people need rest areas. The Gaviota rest areas along the 101 might be my favorite in the state. Especially this one, the one on the northbound (eastern) side of the freeway. It appears not long after the 101 goes from hugging the south-facing coast to almost due north toward the curvy hilly section on the way to Buellton. And unlike its 5 counterparts, this rest area has a lot of character. It has gorgeous views of the surrounding natural features, and it feels perfect in scale. Is it safe? It's not unsafe, but compared to other rest areas, you might say it is unsafe. For one thing, the parking is a small bank of angled parking spots right off the incoming lane. People are usually coming fast off the 101, so when you're backing out to leave, you need to very careful. Also, the only thing separating these parking spots from the highway is a short stone wall and a lane for semis and buses. That lane is usually occupied, so you're usually physically protected, but when it's unoccupied, it would be very easy for a car to careen through that wall and into the parking spaces. There are also signs that warn about rattlesnakes, but I've never seen one here. Unfortunately, this rest area has been closed on two separate occasions in the last three years for renovations. The second closure was only for a few months, but it was still annoying, as this is a good place for me to use the restroom, stretch my legs, and catch some sleep if I need to now that Pea Soup Andersen's is permanently closed (RIP). The bathrooms are generally pretty clean. Even though you're right next to the freeway, it doesn't feel as loud or obnoxious as you expect it to. They have some tables to sit at and a couple of pet-relief areas. I love looking across the highway at the craggy hills. It reminds me so much of the geography farther north around the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo. read more

Needed to stop to use the restroom and take a nap and Gaviota saved me! I pulled off the freeway and I was in the parking lot! Go slow when you exit the freeway because people are walking through the parking lot with their kids. I didn't encounter anyone, but it was scary when the big rig trucks would exit and they're barreling through because they're trying to slow down. This spot is nice, there's plenty of restrooms available and they're clean. Definitely a great rest spot. Stop here even if you don't need to use the restroom it's super convenient and you're back on the road in less than a minute. read more

This is one of those rest areas that I have passed by and actually stopped at, every once in awhile, for more than 40 years. In other words, it's been here a long-long time. It has continue to evolve over the years; slowly of course. In fact, I can't actually tell you what has changed, but I'm sure something has. It used to have payphones, but those are long gone. Overall, it serves it's purpose fairly well. Whereas some of the rest areas along the highways in California have vending machines with various types of waters, soft drinks, and other items, this rest area is fairly sparse in its offerings. Basically, it has the restrooms, a couple of water fountains, the traditional map behind glass on a wall, and a doggy rest area. Pretty much that's it. But, that's pretty much all you need. The one downside to this rest area is that there's not a lot of parking here. I guess that's due to the fact that this rest area was designed a long-long time ago. So, it is not uncommon, on those sunny summer days, that you will find people either in a line to come into this rest area or stagnant cars waiting for a parking spot to open up in the one lane in and out of this facility. This can be a little frustrating. And, if you see this going on, my suggestion would be to just keep on driving you because if this is happening it usually takes a long time for it to stop happening. Overall though, this is an attractive, well designed rest area, that functions as a rest area should. read more

Gaviota rest stop is in an beautiful area with clean bathrooms, a few picnic tables and enough room for pets to run around and stretch their legs. Also there is posted information and maps about the area. Parking lot doesn't have many spaces but since everyone is in/out, it not a problem finding space to park. There is also pay phones and they do work! For .50 cents you can make a local call. read more

The view is scenic and beautiful all around. A few picnic tables make for a relaxing lunch before getting back in the car. The restrooms are clean. When we were there a huge cluster of wasps had a nest close to a tree situated right next to the parking. We just walked around it and thankfully the wasps did not seem to care about the close proximity of people to their nest. So nobody got chased down by the wasps thank God. This is our favorite place to stop along the journey from point A to point B and back again. read more

UPDATE: [Sun, SEP. 2, 2018, 20:00] Earlier, today, I decided to perform a "drive-by", of the Rest Area (to see what the status might be) when, lo-and-behold, the Rest Area was "Open, for Business"... but (judging from all of the indicators, that I have seen) it appears to be "Only Temporary"! It looks like that it was re-opened [primarily] for the LABOR DAY WEEKEND travelers - and may CLOSE, again, when the Holiday is over! One more thing, about the Rest Area: If you become thirsty, when you arrive (and you're thinking about reaching for their WATER FOUNTAIN), "BEE WARNED!" One of the water fountains has become INFESTED (with BEES!) I (myself) suspect that there might be a HIVE/NEST/something, INSIDE of this water fountain, and ANY ATTEMPT to "shoo-away" the bees MAY RESULT IN AN ATTACK, from the ENTIRE SWARM - leave the bees alone! Of all the rest areas in America, this one has the most meaning to me. It's the one along US 101, the El Camino Real, in Gaviota, California, just as the highway turns inland from hugging the Santa Barbara coastline and approaches Buellton, and therefore Solvang, in the Santa Ynez Valley. As a rest area, Gaviota is on the smaller side, mostly because it is shoehorned into a canyon, it was built a long time ago when California probably had all of 15 million people, and it is one of the boilerplate ones found from the top of California to the bottom of it and next to the state's major highways. That said, there won't be a lot of parking, but the rest area will be clean and attractive. The cars pull in diagonally while the trucks seem to parallel park closer to the roadway. If one understands that this rest area was built a long time ago and when US 101 actually went through Santa Barbara with signaled intersections, then you can put it all in perspective. This place has it all - the scent of the nearby ocean at Gaviota (after all, gaviota means seagull in Spanish), the indigenous vegetation, the dated look of a Norm's or a Denny's doubling as a rest area building, and all sorts of cues that you're in Southern California. Not only that, the rest area and the nearby tunnel crossing under the mountains toward the Santa Ynez Valley are featured in countless photos and publications about Santa Barbara County and California. And, there's even the all too familiar triangular sign telling you that rattlesnakes might be in the area. Don't say they didn't warn you! read more

Beautiful rest area, very limited parking. If you're not following the signs before you get there, it would be very easy to drive right past it. And then once you exit go very slow, chances are you'll be looking for a space and waiting for someone else to leave. But once settled in, it is well maintained and right at the bottom of a canyon, just before highway 101 makes its way through a tunnel if you're headed northbound. Look for it right after exiting the tunnel going southbound on the highway. read more

This rest stop is a welcoming site for the weary travelers. It has a bathroom structure closest to the freeway exit. The men' bathrooms are in the front closest to the parking spaces and the women's bathrooms are to the back closest to the mountain side. This rest stop has many amentities. There are 6 stalls available for the each men and women's restrooms. The facility uses 1 ply toilet paper, air blower to dry your hands(no paper towels) and foam soap. They have wild life information for an easy read and tables and benches to eat your snack until you reach your destination. Most of all, it has a pet exercise area, which makes it pet friendly. It is clean and a very peaceful rest area. Please be advised that there are two rest areas, one to the exit northbound and one on the southbound of the 101 freeway. read more

What to do when you've had six glasses of ice tea and you are heading home from a weekend trip? Stop at the Gaviota rest stop why of course! You'll find this rest stop bustling with families all with the same agenda, but for the most part it's a fairly nice rest stop and the bathrooms are cleaner than I expected them to be. As always you should proceed with caution anywhere you go, lock your doors, always be aware of the surroundings, but in the long run it's a nice enough place that I wouldn't hesitate to stop again... but next time I'll try keep the ice tea drinking to a minimum. read more

For almost 11 months every time I've passed by this rest stop, it was closed. Low and behold, to my surprise, one time driving down from a recent visit to S.F., it was open! I can see that they just "beautified" the place with newer benches, landscaping, and the bathroom facilities. Also the building looks like it's been remodeled. Of course on my next return visit from S.F. it was closed (maybe due to cleaning?). I sort of got used to passing this by, but if it's open, I don't mind pulling over and stretching out my legs and possibly taking a nap in the car. read more

As far as rest area go, this is always a welcome stop. there is one on the north bound side and one on the southbound side of US 101. The wonderful thing about these stops, is they come at the right time. What that means is someone in the car needs a restroom, and there is nothing on either side, or in any direction that is convenient, We leave Santa Barbara - someone needs a stop. We leave Buelton - some one needs a stop. Based on shear ease of use. This place makes the grade for both humans and pooches. Reasonably clean and maintained. We will continue to stop here. read more

Great place to stop if you don't want to whizz in your pants and have time to make a rest stop before driving down to Los Angeles or if you're heading up to the Central Coast or Bay Area for Southern California travelers. One thing you got to keep in mind though, is that parking is VERY LIMITED, so you may have to wait for a while until someone leaves. Just a note: The rest stop is CLOSING ITS DOORS on MAY 5, 2014 for "approximately 9 months" according to a news source, for renovations! UPDATE: As of 2/23/2015, the rest stop FINALLY OPENS after months long of closure for renovation work. read more

Worst rest stop ever. Stood in line for a long time to use the restroom during Memorial Day weekend. The person cleaning the bathrooms was rude, cursing and very eerily staring at the patrons that were just passing through. When I asked him if the other women's restroom was open, he snapped at me and said they were closed for cleaning. On a holiday weekend, at a time where everyone is passing through to get home, why would you act so terribly unpleasant? I won't be stopping at this location again. Whoever the worker was at that time should be terminated and find a new profession, perhaps something he enjoys. read more

I needed to use the rest room to wash my hands at the rest stop but there was a long and so i used the other one which said closed. An older man with glasses by the name of Steven was verbally abusive and I felt physically threatened by his presence. He cussed me out. I apologized and siad that I just needed to wash my hands. This is the perfect to stop for some fresh air and a bathroom break on the way to San Luis Obispo from LA. The bathrooms are clean. There is also area information to peruse. The only issue is that parking is limited. That being said, I have never waited longer than 3 or 4 minutes for a spot. There is a rest stop just like it on the other side of the freeway for southbound travelers. For some reason that one is not nearly as busy. read more

Quick stop for a pee or a dump. This is only rest area between Santa Barbara and SLO. The place is clean and have a pet walking grassy area to do their business. The rest area though is smaller than the ones you find on I-5 between L.A. and SF. read more
