I came in with pretty unclear instructions and reference photos and both the stylist and the owner were able to figure out what fit my needs. This seems to be a huge strength here. 2. They were able to fit me in last minute. What was bad 1. The total time listed online was 1.45 hours, the service ended up taking 2.45 hours. I have been to many salons and never had my hair take that long, especially when I was getting all over color and a blowout (no haircut). Perhaps this was due to me booking last minute. However, the website booking made it look wide open and I think it is the responsibility of the salon to accurately represent their booking capability. I would not have booked with them had I known what experience was to follow. 2. The salon overall seemed overbooked and people were bouncing around. Three different people worked on my hair. Personally, I really didn't like this set up. I like to build a relationship with my stylist and this hectic atmosphere was not synonymous with that 3. The blowout I had was so uncomfortable. The rollers were tangled up in my hair and I could feel it ripping out as the stylist took them out. I have never have a blowout be so painful. My hair had so many split ends after I looked in the mirror at home. 4. My hair fell the moment I stepped outside. Granted it was a windy day, but my hair doesn't typically fall that fast. I think this may have been due to the stylist rushing at the end. On one hand I'm glad she did because I had been sitting alone for quite some time, but on the other hand I paid for essentially nothing. My old stylist back home (moved cross country) had no problem giving me a blowout that lasted at least a few hours. Even on windy days. 5. At one point the owner took my stylist in the back and seemed to be scolding her. This is never something a new client wants to see. I immediately felt anxious that something had gone wrong with my hair color. It ended up great but tbh experience was awkward and handled strangely in my opinion. 6. Finally. The price came out to $260 for all over color and a blowout. I wouldn't mind this price if it wasn't for the lackluster experience. Hair salons are charging luxury prices without offering luxury experiences. The pricing structure is also strange. They charge $60 extra for toner but I have never had a color job that didn't need toner to look good. It feels strange to not include it all together. The toner charge was added after which was a surprise because toner has always been included in the price. To be clear, the website did ask if I wanted to add toner for $60. I thought that was for someone coming in looking just to tone and not add more color. Perhaps this was my mistake but I found the whole pricing structure strange. A few other things to note: water was offered but never given and they only accept cash/zelle/venmo tips. Overall this salon was not a fit for me. A lot of this is subjective preference but I think it's important that people understand what environment they are paying for when they sign up to spend hundreds. That being said, the color was beautiful and I am grateful for that.

What disappointed me most was not only the result, but the way my concerns were handled afterward. Instead of taking responsibility for the result and trying to understand why I was unhappy, the stylist repeatedly shifted the conversation toward blaming me. I was made to feel that the problem was somehow related to my language barrier and cultural differences in communication. At one point, the conversation even became about money and what I had paid for -- essentially, "You didn't pay for the whole highlight, right?" -- which felt completely inappropriate and shaming. I have never experienced this level of disrespect or lack of accountability in a beauty salon. I left feeling sad, embarrassed, and unwelcome, when I had simply come in expecting professional service and to be heard as a client. I want to be clear that I don't believe this experience represents the values of the entire salon or its owners. My issue is specifically with this individual stylist and the way he handled a situation when the result did not meet my expectations. I am sharing this so other women, especially those who may have a language or cultural communication difference, know to make sure their concerns are genuinely listened to and treated respectfully. A client should never be made to feel guilty or ashamed for expressing disappointment with a service.

I joined Yelp for the sole purpose of writing a review about TRIO. I want to make it clear I receive no benefits in exchange for writing this as well. WARNING THIS IS A THOROUGH REVIEW!!! total for a totally new look cut/color and from 1:30 pm-4:30 or 5pm was $180 (like half what I usually pay to give pop and style to straight fine hair that usually does nothing but look flat and greasy in the summer) I ended up with a very natural golden blondish-caramel highlights to compliment my warm skin (I naturally have very dark brown hair but haven't seen my natural color since I was 12 and I'm not 24). Also I thought I might want to go dark but the light adds volume (controlled damage) to my fine fine hair. Never thought I'd look good in bangs or layers with my length, fine straight hair that does nothing, easily split ends so go blunter, but Roxy did both and seriously never gotten so many compliments ever. BACKGROUND: I am originally from Cleveland, Ohio, and even though I have not lived there for the last 6 years (living in ATL for 4 years and Chicago for the last 2 years), I had managed to avoid getting a hair cut/color from anyone but the same man in Cleveland, the only man to have styled my hair for 12 years. Unfortunately the inevitable happened and after 6 months since my last hair cut/color in Cleveland I could not wait any longer and resigned to the fact that I'd have to put my hair in a Chicagoan's hands despite my fear, mistrust, (and guilt from a feeling of disloyalty) . I was referred to TRIO by a woman who lives in my building whose taste I trust and whose hair is always perfect. While all the stylists seem wonderful she specifically told me to request Nicki to do my color and Roxy to do my cut. SCHEDULING AND ARRIVAL: I called Trio and a nice gentleman scheduled me for the following day. He not only patiently listened to my story about never having gone to any other stylist etc until now (without making me feel crazy), but he calmly eased my concerns by telling me how the process would go from start to finish step by step and about the strengths of my stylists as well. I never had to worry about whether to schedule a full or partial color, creative or whatever option consultations etc. and was basically hand held like I needed after telling him what kind of hair I have etc. From the start I was put at ease. ARRIVAL AND CONSULTATIONS: What sets TRIO apart from other better known or larger salons is the extremely individual and personal treatment that makes the TRIO experience worthwhile and unique. From the moment I walked in the staff and stylists made me feel like I was special and the most important client there getting their absolute best. Literally every woman in the salon is smiling and friendly because of the positivity there from the staff that is just contagious (and i went in trying to be negative!) Of course the sofa/benches are comfortable and the place is clean and luxurious and the staff offers you beverages etc. but even when I checked in the receptionist said "Blair? I recognize your voice from the phone." I changed into a silk "robe" and sipped on coffee for 5 minutes on a nice cream sofa until Nicki came to get me and bring me to her station. I LOVED the consultation because NICKI and ROXY (color stylist and cut stylist respectively) conferred with me from the very beginning so I never worried about everyone being on the same page and at least they shared the same vision about my hair and I sort of pretended to lol. I again gave Nicki my back story and had a few ideas of what I might want to do about color but gave her permission to take charge because I wanted first and foremost a totally new look and honestly I have no vision when it comes to hair/color and what will actually look good on me and never had to think about it with my regular hair stylist. Nicki stepped up and took charge, basically went in the opposite direction of the bad ideas I proposed and made me feel totally at ease. She then called over ROXY, who was doing my cut right after, to tell her her ideas about my color. BASICALLY, ROXY NICKI and sort if I worked as a team to give me a rocking new look my only requirement being to keep the length as much as possible. EXPERIENCE: BOTH women and the girl who washed my hair treated me like I was their only/most important client, made me feel like my hair was special and that the outcome personally mattered to them. Nicki's part was done, yet she came over to watch Roxy finish cutting my hair and encouraging me to go for the wild bangs and less conservative more stylish cut. The three of us were very happy with the outcome, I felt like I got a fresh look and a make over, and 2 weeks later I'm still receiving compliments. Clearly those women are happy working at TRIO Salon and its amazing how something like enjoying your job can totally take my experience at the salon from happily satisfactory to extraordinary and excited to go back read more

Please do not go here! The girls at the front counter are rude and obnoxious! I was hung up on 5 times!! I wanted to give this place a try because I have a family member that goes here. I didn't want to spend so much money so I decided to give a color apprentice a try. Its supposed to be an advanced color class, which means that they are in their final stages of the program. Well BS, the educator(if I should call her that) was showing this colorist how to part my hair to get started. Are you serious? I should of got up and left right there! Well needless to say that my long beautiful hair looks a mess! I wanted natural highlights(not chunky)! I instead got subtle highlights, very uneven, with wide big black roots on the top of my hair still showing!!! Then the instructor had the nerve to say, "well you wanted it natural." NOOO I said I didn't want chunky bleached highlights, not with my black roots still visible on top, where it looks like nothing was even done. I had some chunky splotches of bleach in some spots and no color at all on the crown of my head!!! Yes, I paid only 30 dollars but it was money and time flushed down the toilet, not to mention that I was there 4 freaking hours and parking is 4 dollars an hour!!! It would of taken so much longer, but I was getting annoyed and told the "so called" colorist that I didn't feel like paying more money on the meter!!! I tried calling back there because the instructor told me when I left that if I got home and still was not happy to call them back. Well I called back to see if they could refund me, so I could go and get it fixed correctly, but the rude ass instructor told me NO and she had the nerve to hang up on me, after listening to her babbling on and on about it was a training program!! She was talking over me and would not even let me say anything!! She told me she checked the work!! Well if you checked it correctly and listened to the customer then you would see that it was completely uneven and partially done! I don't understand why people that have absolutely no creative skills go to beauty school!!! I am so disgusted at the way that instructor behaved towards me on the phone, and the receptionist too. They would not let me talk to the owner, and told me he would call me back, which of course he did not!! This place is garbage! I went to a salon apprentice at Salon Buzz, a much more higher end salon that doesn't even charge as much as Trio for normal priced services. UPDATE 4/18/2011: I was terrified to receive a call from the salon notifying me that John Blue was no longer working there. When I asked where he was, they were quite rude in not giving me any information, leaving a bitter taste in my mouth. Luckily, thanks to the Internet, I found him at another salon a block away. life. Is. Good. JOHN BLUE IS THE BEST COLORIST IN THE CITY!!! I cannot tell you how difficult it is to find a good colorist in a city where everyone claims to be the creme de la creme, but low and behold I've found one in John Blue! Blue has taken my mid-lengthed mane from brunette to blonde, to red to copper to chestnut; infused with caramel pieces and back around again effortlessly and without damage or any awkward "transitional" period that many colorists give you while changing your look. He's recently introduced to me to baliage, which creates soft natural God-given highlights without the contrived uniformity of the old school foil. Can you tell that I'm a fan? His professional demeanor and keen eye for detail are just added bonuses to the exceptional work that he creates and service that he provides. He is funny, charismatic and a true genius that I truly trust to give me a look especially customized for me. Over 5 years ago I started going to a salon called Mane Attraction in Phoenix Arizona. I had the absolute best hair stylist and her name was Marisa. Two years ago I moved to Chicago and was absolutely lost without my trusty go-to. I spent those two years trying out other salons in the city, some fairly high end and even the occasional sports clips (eep!! I was desperate) trying to find a comparable stylists to no avail. Well, I was beyond thrilled to hear that my stylist Marisa was making the move to the windy city!! I went to see her within her first few days of working at Trio. It was great to have her cut my hair again! She does a phenomenal job and I have referred many many friends and colleagues her way, everyone from high profile artistic industry folk to just plain dudes and they have all thanked me for the referral. She is really great at gelling what you want to do with her extensive knowledge of shape and technique. She creates a personal connection with you and you never feel rushed that you do at lower end salons. I also want to touch quickly on the owners of the salon. I just read the review by Jenna H. regarding Theresa and Diana. What planet is she on. Was she looking not to pay for the excellent services she received? I've been a client of the dynamic duo from their days at Vidal Sasson. When most other salons were overprocessing my curly hair, Theresa and Diana taught me how to "work with" my hair. Theresa's cuts are nothing but perfection. With Theresa's cuts, I can transform my shoulder length curly hair into straight hair in a snap---all with a barrel brush and no straight iron--my straight hair looks completely natural with lots of movement--and not bone straight. Diana let's you have fun with color-- from subtle to bold if you choose. I choose to experiment and change my color. Change from hi-lights to panels. My color looks fabulous on my curly or straight hair. Neither one is going to let you walk out of the salon if you don't look good or are not happy. I always receive nothing but compliments on "my spiced up" hair. If Jenna knew her hair, straightening curly hair (and keeping it straight) in Chicago's summer humidity ain't a happening thing. ASK FOR BLUE!!! HANDS DOWN THE BEST COLORIST I HAVE SEEN IN THIS CITY IN YEARS!! i had heard about balliage (an alternative to highlights that seems to be all the rage with the stars) and was interested because i am so lazy when it comes to color maintenance. prior to seeing john/blue, a colorist that many of my friends have been seeing for years, it was mid-august and i hadn't had my highlights done since february... he is an absolute riot and a true artist! i had a great time while he painted on highlights and layered strings of cotton in my mane, making me look like some sort of rasta-lion as i processed... the results were amazing, very natural looking sun-kissed highlights. i just went back this past week for another round. this time blue "brightened" me up a bit, adding more blond and making me feel like a pampered princess! i am sick with a sinus infection and the staff made sure i was comfortable and kept the hot tea coming! this is a great salon with a very talented and attentive staff. and blue is by far the best colorist i have been to in the city!!! definitely recommend! My friend got her hair color done at Trio Salon by Vanessa and I absolutely loved it; so I had to try it out! I live about 45 minutes away, but I was in the city for an event and made an appointment to have Vanessa color my hair. I am a pretty picky person when it comes to my hair, so I was a little nervous having someone new color it. She was very friendly and listened as I explained my hair color concerns. I have dark brown hair and have been getting blonde highlights for the past year. I have tried numerous salons before finding out about Trio Salon. I have to say this was the BEST my hair has ever looked. I didn't know that my hair could actually turn out how it did. I loved the color she used, and the way she highlighted it. I have no idea how to do hair, but I do know there are different techniques in the way people foil. Vanessa took the time and it turned out great. Harlow ROCKS at TRIO Salon. I screwed up my hair on Labor Day weekend with a blonde box kit. My hair was two shades of blonde: sun yellow AND ash and it looked terrible to me. I hated it and I wanted it fixed. My friend recommended Harlow at Trio. She was very friendly and accommodating and asked me to send her photos of my hair. I felt like I really screwed my hair up and I wasn't sure that anyone could 100% fix it---fix it to be one, nice, even color. But I emailed her and we made appointment and Harlow DID IT. She performed a miracle on me. My hair is a now a perfect and even platinum blonde color and it's awesome. I love the color! ALSO, I wanted a haircut. Harlow recommended her coworker and cutting expert, Annie, and Annie gave me a great haircut. She added some layers to my fine hair, cut a few inches off, and fixed my bangs. My hair looks and feels awesome! I LOVE IT thanks to the both of them. I want to know what planet Jenna H. sailed in from? I have been a client of Diana's and Theresa's for years. When I first started my hair was something from a horror movie. I have very curly coarse hair that was also dyed a horrendous color. With loving care and attention and utmost professionalism both Diana and Theresa have transformed my locks. Living in the humidity of chicago where my hair is frequently designed by "wind and rain." I now have hair that others actually admire and stop me to ask about my colorist and stylist. As for Theresa the most difficult part is that she is a perfectionist and will not lt you out of the salon unless the cut is perfect. I have followed Jeri for 20 years and love seeing her at Trio. The salon is quiet and pleasant - without the hustle and bustle of being passed from one person to the next that you get at many other high end salons. The vibe is relaxing and comforting. I honestly can't say enough about Jeri and the quality of her work. She has never given me the same haircut twice and I've had long, short and everything in between. She pays so much attention to detail and really focuses on giving you the best shape for your face - a truly unique cut just for you. I am constantly asked who cuts my hair. I often say, "it's the hair cut that keeps on giving" because the style always changes and evolves into something great and therefore I don't have to worry about upkeep. What can I possibly say about TRIO Salon except that the staff is AMAZING. I recently moved to Chicago and had not found a perfect fit for a salon yet, but after my experience this past week at TRIO, I can say that I have! I called TRIO on a weekday evening with a major issue, I had gotten a gallon of liquid latex paint stuck in my hair and practically glued to my scalp! After working overtime that evening and squeezing me in the next day, they were able to remove ALL of the paint from my hair. Before going to TRIO I was told my countless salons that I would probably need to shave my head, and to me, that was not an option. Thank you so much TRIO for your dedication, time and determination to get the paint out of my hair. I have referred them to the rest of my office (we all had paint in our hair- office parties can get out of control!) and others visited them as well, also receiving success! This place is fabulous and I will most definitely be going back for my *normal* hair routine... no more paint for this girl! read more

I walked into this salon a hot mess- like rocked a ponytail and hat on a daily basis type of mess. I had an appointment scheduled with Christie hoping that she could do something to make me feel beautiful again. When I walked in, she was finishing up with a client that couldn't say enough wonderful things about her. I can see why. Such a precious little gem- Christie and the staff at TRIO made me feel like a triple platinum member, chatted me up, listened to my concerns, and took before and after pictures of my transformation. Let me tell you, my previously measly hair looks 17348 times thicker, healthier, glossier, and sexier than I ever imagined was possible. So much so, that my mom almost died when she saw me- so I made an appointment for her. It was amazing to see how what looked like three scraggly hairs could be transformed into an incredible hairstyle that lifted her self-esteem, rejuvenated her spirits and commanded attention. I arrived in Chicago on Friday morning, desperate for a haircut as I'm getting married in New York next week and after 10 months of backpacking boy did it need doing. I had seen the reviews on here for Trio and decided it sounded perfect. I am very picky about my hair salons so went to check it out first. I popped in about 3pm asking if they had any appointments free and they did with the fabulous Roxy. I told her she was mentioned a lot on here and she had no idea but was really pleased. It cost me $60 and took just over an hour to deal with my mess of hair and I came out with a fantastic looking bob. She took her time and listened to everything I said I wanted and also made suggestions which I love as I find it reassuring that they want to make sure you have a cut that suits you. If I was living here I would defo make this my salon and anyone looking for a place that treats you well and doesn't try to sell you all their services and stuff whilst you are there, this is the place for you. read more

I have been to a lot of salons and this one tops them all. I feel so lucky to have Vanessa for color. I previously went to the amazing Jacki but as my economical situation changed, the salon was gracious enough to offer up Vanessa who trained under Jacki. That is all I needed to hear. And the rest is history. If you have just moved to the city, don't do what I did: explore several cut-rate salons by using a coupon, only to discover you get what you pay for and the emotional result is devastating. Trio was recommended to me eight years ago by a friend who is one of the vice presidents of Elite Modeling. Does that tell you anything? At first I was shocked at the price because unbeknownst to me my friend's recommendation happened to be a level 5 colorist--the most experienced-trainer. I like everything about TRIO. I've been coming here for years to get my hair cut, and I am always pleased by how relaxed and full of good feeling this place is. The stylists are clearly happy to be working together, and when they are helping the apprentices, the attentiveness and mutual respect you see on both sides is lovely. The talent level is very high, and there isn't any pretension anywhere. I am writing this review in praise of JIMMY, who is very, very good at what he does, and is good company as well. When I first saw him, and saw him change a good haircut that I was tired of, into a haircut with a great new shape in maybe twenty minutes, I thought, " this is wonderful. I hope it grows out nicely, because I bet I can't afford to see this guy too often." Turns out it looks great longer, and he actually charges less than my previous person. I had the most amazing experience at Trio Salon. Everyone was so nice from the minute I walked in the door, including the girl at the front desk and the shampoo person. I had an incredible shampoo that went on forever with a little massage. This place really knows how to treat their clients well. The girl who did my color - Jackie - took a lot of time consulting with me to be sure she knew exactly what I wanted. She did such a wonderful job. I finally got the ratio of highlights and lowlights I have been trying to get for some time and she successfully removed the brassy orangey color I had going on. Usually my color either ends up too dark or too blond, but this was just right. Then I got the best blowout of my life. My hair was so smooth, sleek, and fabulous. The location is great just west of Michigan avenue shopping, so after you are beautified you can go for a little shopping spree or out to lunch. What a pleasure! I highly recommend it. read more

I am not the type of person to take time to write a review, due to my schedule, unless it is truly deserved. But here I am. I made an appointment to get my hair colored at Trio with Vanessa. She listened to what I wanted and then made suggestions that actually reflected what I was telling her. I feel that many of the high end salons downtown are so snobby and they don't listen to you. I was truly surprised with my entire experience. From Vanessa listening to me and the great job she did all the way to the price. My hair has never looked better and I didn't feel like I overpaid for it. I have been to many of the upscale salons in Chicago and paid a fortune and I my hair never looked this good. I always left feeling like they didn't quite listen to me and that I paid too much. I will only go to Trio from this point on. I was so happy to hear that Alex I. and the George Charles Salon were once once again accepting appointments after over 2 1/2 months of restrictions due to CoVid19. This was my first time to the salon (on SAT-06JUN), since Alex moved here in February and I was very impressed. Not only is the salon located on one of Chicago's most iconic and chicest streets but the salon is beautiful. Alex has been my stylist for over 30 years and I have loyally followed him to every salon he has worked in and owned. The George Charles Salon is fortunate to have such a creative and talented stylist as Alex working for them and in turn Alex will definitely help the salon to continue in its success. I just moved from NYC where Kyle from Oscar Blandi salon on Madison did my color. Kyle came highly recommended and had an A-list clientele with lots of magazine covers. He was so great and I was so worried I wouldn't find someone comparable in Chicago. A friend recommended Renata at Trio salon and I was thrilled with my color. She took so much time to make sure the highlights were super close to the scalp and the color has never looked better. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for great color. Also, my hair was pretty damaged from the color/technique used by a stylist at the Charles Ifergan salon. So when I first went to see Renata, she recommended I begin using a conditioning treatment which got my hair back in good shape. If you want fabulous color, go see Renata. read more

I have had my hair cut/styled by several salons and stylists in my lifetime but noone better than Patricia Arredondo. Patti is amazing. She has a unique combination of talent and style that is rare. Patti truly wants her clients to have the best cut for them and works at it each time by continuing to look for new ways to reinvent their hair but knowing their style, using her own talent and style and even researching other styles in magazines or other media for hair styles her clients may look good in and then recommending how to get that style going with her client. Patti truly cares about you, your style and how you look. She is the best stylist I have ever encountered. Not only is she a great listener but very sweet. She always makes sure I like the end result of my hair. The salon is in a great location that makes it easy for me to get there from the loop on the brown line exiting off Armitage. Their website makes it easy to book your next appointment. I found Simone through a Facebook post and we scheduled very quickly via Instagram. I sent her some pictures and explained what I was looking for ahead of time and she totally got it right away. I got there a few minutes early and she took me back right away, where we talked through what I wanted in more detail. I showed her a couple pictures of what I did and didn't like, and she explained to me what she planned to do. I have a lot of hair, but the foils took less time than usual which was great! For processing and washing, there is a very chill area in the back with minimalist furniture and a toasty fireplace which is great for when you're processing wet hair. The aesthetic and vibe were posh but not pretentious, I loved it. Everything was sparkling clean too, it's clear that the salon owner/manager has impeccable attention to detail. I could tell as soon as I sat down for my blowout that the color was perfect, even though my hair was still wet. And it is - she turned my overly bleached hair into a more lived in blonde with lots of dimension, and it is super flattering with my coloring. I feel very fortunate that I found Simone after 8+ years with my last stylist, and I definitely will be making myself a regular client of Salon Shiloh!

I never try anything new with my hair so this was a huge step for me and she did a beautiful job, even teaching me how to dry them so they will lay correctly. She was so patient with me during the haircut and blowout as I had a last minute phone meeting I had to be on... she turned off the music and continued to cut my hair while I was on the call.
