I wrote a review for the Trio location on North Ave a little over year ago, but that location is now closed and my favorite stylist has moved to this location on Wabash. Reese does the best cuts, bar none. He's good at figuring out what looks good on you and your facial structure--people who just met me are constantly talking about how perfect my haircut seems to match my personality too. I go in and let him do whatever he wants (he's the expert, not me!) and Reese always leaves me beyond satisfied. I followed Reese to this location from the old one because of his excellent work, even though it now requires me to take a bus AND a train (previously I could just walk). I'll continue following him around the city if I have to, because his skill and expertise is worth it. Update 5/4/2011: Reese is no longer at Trio and as such, neither am I. (See, I said I'd follow him anywhere!) The staff at Trio is great though, and I would never hesitate to recommend it to a friend. And online booking--who can argue with that? I'll miss it now that I'm going somewhere else. read more

I recently relocated from Chicago to San Diego... Still searching high and low for hair stylists and an esthetician like the ones at Trio on Wabash! I'm sure the guys at Trio are great, too. I just never had a service with them. However, just like the girls I've worked with, they're all extremely nice and professional. In all of my years at TRIO --- never once a snooty attitude! Jeri and Roz have both cut my hair and are AMAZING!! They really listen to what your needs/wants are -- and they deliver. They're both the best hair stylists EVER! They cut long, short and curly hair. My hair is shoulder length with layers but never looks overly layered, exactly the way I like it. Only wish I could find someone in SD to do the same!! They don't judge what you request and also offer ideas to update your hair. For waxing and facials Nicole is the VERY best!!! A total pro! Discreet, kind, fast and gentle. I highly recommend (and MISS!!) all three of these professionals at TRIO in Chicago. Worth the $! read more

I LOVE going to Trio and Jeri is the girl to get! I have very textured hair and she knows exactly how to treat it and style it. She makes you feel good about yourself before you leave. The only thing I have to rag about is that because cutting my hair takes so long, Jeri usually leaves after shes done cutting and directs the styling part. The first time I went, she styled most of my hair and this time, she was gone half the time and it didnt come out as good as before. But I still love the cut! read more

Choosing an apprentice for a haircut can be a scary situation. Luckily, mine didn't have to be! I had Megan as a stylist and she did a fantastic job on my cut. She's an apprentice but was very talented and enthusiastic. Megan seemed to know exactly what I wanted and paid great attention to detail. Plus, we had great conversation. I used to go there for years - back when Trio was on Walton and then after the move to Wabash. I've seen plenty of stylists come and go and ALL were fantastic! Now that I shave my head, there's unfortunately no need to go back - but I have brought my girlfriend in & after years of so-so cuts in the suburbs she's HOOKED! She's been there twice and both times she's floored by how good her cut is & how easy it is to style herself because of how well it is cut. She's had Kim both times and LOVES her. I am a transplant to Chicago and for the last seven years I have been trying to find that hair stylist that really knows how to cut hair and actually listens to what you want. Yes, I have tried many, many salons around the Chicago area and I would also travel back home to have my hair done. That was until I found Karah at Trio. She is wonderful at what she does. I have longer hair and she didn't cut too much off and actually listened to exactly what I wanted. She even was able to fix a bad haircut that I had by another salon in Chicago (the stylist gave me a semi- mullet). It also helps out that she is very easy to talk to and has a great personality. I give TRIO Salon 5 stars because they simply deserve it. Since the very moment I took the phone to schedule an appointment to the time I left the place, they were really attentive and professional. I wanted to have my hair cut and blow dry. They have super competitive prices and use great products. I'm trying to get over how bad my haircut with Cecilia was at Trio. Not only was it cut way shorter than what I asked for but it has these very uneven layers which make it impossible to style. I should have waited to see Roxy who if you are getting a haircut at Trio is great. I considered extensions but they quoted me $500. I booked a vacation instead. I also booked an appointment for color and retouch on highlights and the price was $193. Reminder I have short hair and have never paid that at Trio even when I had long hair. Definitely over priced for what it is. Needless to say I will not be going back. Disappointed. read more

I had a eyebrow tinting, Milbon moisture treatment, and the keratin express treatment done. It was my birthday and I wanted to treat myself to a salon day. Upon arriving I was lost since the salon is located in a hidden alley behind Prada. Once walking into the alley itself than their is a door guy at the end, that takes your name and lets you up to the salon on the third level. Would have been better if this was explained via email/phone once I made the actual appointment. That definitely would have saved myself time walking back and fourth a couple blocks for 20 minutes . Anyways, I call them a second time and the receptionist stays with me on the phone until I figured out the location. The salon is very clean, organized, and professional looking. I check myself in and my stylist Joseph is very well experienced and took care of my hair really greatly! I am of mixed race, Middle Eastern and Ethiopian so having thick hair is more prone to being drier naturally. The Milbon moisture treatment, definitely helped add shine/moisture to my dry hair! I noticed a huge difference once he styled it straight. I received many compliments from my boyfriend and family on both my hair and the eyebrow tints. read more

I LOVE Trio! I have had EXCELLENT care from Annie and Harlow. Harlow took a my hair color that had been done horribly, corrected and perfected it! Annie is the best at cutting my fine hair so that it look great! I only wish that I could go more often, but I had to relocate to another state for work. I found out about Salon Trio through the website salon apprentice in which I signed up to be a hair model for Vanessa. Initially I wanted to do an all over color on my hair to lighten it up but after meeting Vanessa she advised me against it. I am glad that she did because otherwise my hair would've looked damaged from all the stripping and pulling of color. Instead she gave me a partial foil which looks really natural. I would definitely go back to Salon Trio and see Vanessa, she was very professional and on time! I hate when you make an appointment at a salon and the person doing your hair makes you wait! The overall vibe at the salon was very upbeat and everyone working there was friendly. I was also shocked that they had someone blow dry my hair at the end. I recently moved to Chicago from New York, and was in desperate need of color and a cut. I consulted with a fashionable friend in the area and she swore by Trio. Making an appointment was really easy and the hours and location of the salon are great. I had my hair colored by Nikki, who was wonderful. She's fun and friendly, and really understood what I was trying to do with my hair. With winter right around the corner, I wanted to tone down my hair and make it darker. Nikki picked the pefect shade of brown, and I've been getting compliments ever since. I had my hair cut by Jimmy, who was also awesome. My hair was already pretty short, but he convinced me to shorten it up a bit more and add in some short textured bangs. I'm usually pretty comfortable letting a stylist take the lead, and I am really glad I did so in Jimmy's case. My haircut came out great and his vision was much better than mine own! After a move from California and 14 years with the same stylist, I was nervous. After talking to people in the neighborhood and visiting a few salons, Trio was the perfect fit. I was 100 percent satisfied with the results. I had Nikki as a colorist and Marisa as a stylist and both were outstanding. They truly listened to my needs and coordinated services with each other. Both were confident and took their time to address my wishes. At the same time, they made professional recommendations which I appreciated. I could not have been more pleased with the finished product. The entire staff was friendly, helpful and up beat. Although busy, the salon seemed organized and client friendly. I am very happy that I found Trio and Nikki and Marisa; it has helped to make my continuing transition to Chicago a positive experience. Chicago is a great city and Trio is a great salon. I have been getting my haircut by Jeri at Trio salon for a couple of years. The most recent haircuts have elicited rave reviews from men and women. It is the kind of haircut where you can get out of bed and do NOTHING to your hair and it looks great! I have never liked a haircut this much. I have never had a man stop me and tell me my haircut is cute and they love it..it's really great since I am in my sixties..why not be sassy right? I must say it's lovely to not be invisible..you know what I mean, right? Great qualities of Jeri are: a great listener even if I can't tell her specifically what I want, she keeps trying. In this instance I said I wanted it to look cute coming from under a hat, don't want to do anything to it and for it to be sassy and messy... She did it! I've visited so many salons in my lifetime that I can't keep count, but Trio definitely stood out as one of the best in service, quality, and expertise. I wanted to lighten up my dark hair for summer, and there is this great new look that I've been seeing on celebrities lately. I just didn't really know what it was. THANKFULLY I went to Allison @ Trio Salon. After just a few seconds of trying to describe it, she knew exactly what I was talking about - and exactly how to do it! She did a balayage/ombre color on me and it turned out JUST as I had pictured. It's a newer technique that not many stylists know how to do. It was pretty obvious that she has tremendous experience with color -- and a natural artistic talent. Sharie Valcin - Trio Salon - has been taking care of my hair since I moved to Chicago, a year ago. I simply adore her and recommend her to all my friends! I am from out of state. I didn't know I couldn't tip with a credit card. I apologized for not having money and told the receptionist I needed to come back to give a tip. After knowing this, the receptionist treated me like dirt. She frowned didn't even acknowledge my apology and proceeded to walk away and didn't even hand me my jacket. I was so uncomfortable that I didn't want to see her again when I went back to tip the hairdresser. When she realized i came back, she greeted me with a smile but it was too late. It is not her job to make people feel bad for not knowing that tips are only accepted in cash! This was my first hair salon choice here in Chicago and I'm very disappointed. Ill look for a new place and hopefully I'll have a better Midwest welcome. read more

I went in to use my Groupon for a Brazillian blowout or I probably wouldn't have hit up this salon in the first place. My hair looks great! Vanessa did a fantastic job and was very friendly. I think the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that aside from my stylist Vanessa I had 3 other people working on me. Two separate people washed my hair (had to have it done twice for the process) and another person did my final blow dry. They were all so friendly and helpful that I felt like I needed to tip them all, and then unfortunately my tip for Vanessa was a bit lower as a result. I understand and appreciate the apprentice program and letting people get experience, but I really do prefer to have one person see me through from start to finish. read more

I came here with a mass of thick, unruly hair that was in need of an understanding stylist. I knew that I wanted a change (yet no bangs! and not too short!) and booked an appointment with Gerri. The first thing that I'll point out is that the salon is refreshingly attitude-free. I wouldn't have known that Gerri is an owner, unless she told me. I felt welcomed upon check-in and when I left the woman behind the desk even helped me on with my coat. These things sound trifling, but it is truly the little things that make a difference. Upon settling in Gerri's chair, the consultation process began. This was definitely not rushed, as we spent a decent amount of time bouncing ideas back and forth and looking at photos-both of myself and inspiration that Gerri had on her iPad. I appreciated being able to pick out the line of shampoo and conditioner that I wanted used on my head, and truly felt like I was being listened to, and not just one on an assembly line. At the end, Gerri even styled my hair, adding in a few soft curls. I felt like a celebrity when I went to grab drinks and attend a library event later on that evening. The follow-up also helped cement my experience that this is a salon to which I will be returning. A couple of days after my cut, I received a phone call indicating that I can come back to receive a complimentary blow out/styling. I have since booked my appointment and am looking forward to returning to the salon for upkeep, a new look, or special-occasion hair. read more

I really needed a new stylist, and found Trio on the one occasion I used Groupon. Jeri is one of the absolute best, and still 'my girl' even though I moved out of Chicago. I wait to get my hair cut until I return to Illinois, simply because not many can navigate thick hair, with a wave, that does nothing to said hair: a good cut shows its nature through all I mentioned, and especially as it grows out! There have been times I wanted to cut all my hair off, and Jeri knew me well enough to know that was a bad idea. She is incredibly knowledgable at her craft! She is also one of the sweetest, kindest souls you ever could aspire to meet! From the moment you enter their space, the vibe is palpable - from the space, to each and every person you encounter: they are all the absolute best! Trio was the first salon I went to upon moving back to Chicago summer of 2007. Since then, I have never gone anywhere else. I love the personable stylists and the quality they give to all customers. I have sworn by Shelley's cuts and Renata's coloring. Both have made it impossible for me to go several days without a compliment on my hair. It's all because of the Trio team. My favorite addition is the online appointment booking. It suits my last minute need for "a little fixing". I also the the fact that if Shelley or Renata are not available, I can trust every stylist there because they all have amazing training. Def best place for hair! read more

Trio is an upscale salon that gives you an excellent cut. I followed my stylist, Annie, from another salon. And as always, she did a stellar job. The owner, Alex, was helping Annie a little with the cut (it was something she'd never tried before) and he was a very personable guy who totally knew what he was doing. Later, his little daughter came into the salon wearing a purple princess outfit- pretty damn cute! Anyway, the staff at Trio are friendly and professional. Annie is awesome (as always) and Alex seems like a great stylist as well. If you're looking for a cut, this is the place to go! read more

I'm writing this review for Nicole, the Aesthetician. I have been getting a brazilian since July 2007. Her price is very reasonable for Chicago ($50), she is nice, gentle, and her products are GREAT. My regular colorist was busy so I went to Maria who I found through Salon Apprentice. When I went into the salon my hair was a warm medium brown with copper highlights and 5 weeks of gray roots outgrowth. A very natural look in need of a touch-up. Maria and I talked about what I wanted which is exactly what I had minus the gray roots. Maria's teacher stood by and listened to everything. What I had when I left was at lease 6 or 7 shades darker. I was now a brunette. Even worse the coppery highlights had been re-interpreted as an overall aubergine or cabernet-colored. An un-natural purple haired looked. Figuring that these things happen and were part of seeing an apprentice albeit under the supervision of a more experienced colorist, I called the salon when I got home. Explained how I was unhappy and asked if this could be fixed. Maria was not there so I left a message with the Salon front desk for Maria or her supervisor. I did not demand that they fix it the next day but offered to come at their convenience. Maria called me the next day, listened to my request and said she would check with her supervisor and call me back. That was 10 days ago and I am still waiting. I have gone to another salon that has told me the "fix" is about a 4 appointment process over the next 6 months. I am dis-appointed that the color is not what I wanted. I am furious that I was ignored and no attempt was made to correct anything. I blame Maria who cannot color hair properly and her supervisor (whose name I wish I could remember so I could list it here) who did not supervise anything. Do not go to this salon. its location and prices may suggest Gold Coast quality. The results suggest you'd be better off at Walgreen's buying a box of Miss Clairol. read more

Trio Salon is the best Salon, I have been to many salons, but Trio has won me as a customer for life. From to receptionist to the owner, your greeted by name, you are offered a beverage, and your professional stylist comes to greet you, usually with a hug! I love the fact that when I visited the salon, with my grandson, there was never a problem, in fact he got so much attention he always wanted to go with me. Every time I leave TRIO I come out feeling like a Million Bucks. Nikki's color skills are beyond fabulous and Roxie gives a fantastic hair cut and style. I love the pampering Trio offers. read more

So I went for a cut & color because of their reputation. The cut was awesome. The color? A different story. About the color: I basically wanted them to dye my hair back to my natural hair color which is a dark brown. Dark brown meaning not black. I'm Asian, so this isn't really a 'normal' natural hair color. I explained to the hair stylist that I wanted my hair color matched to my roots and she smiled nodded, and then proceeded to dye my hair jet black. The color was so dark, in fact, that every single one of my friends asked me why I ruined my hair... which is not a response that one wants to hear when they had just spent ~$150 on their hair at the salon? (Or maybe I just have too high expectations) Also, there's a bit of sales pressure, but not more than I would expect from an average salon. read more

I've had about a dozen cuts at Trio now, and I've never had a bad experience. Aaron excels at giving me exactly the cut I want -- short and precise, but not dominatrix-y. He's meticulous about making sure that every hair falls perfectly into place, and I love that I can make it look just as good at home each morning with only 5 minutes of blow-drying and a dollop of hair gunk. The scalp massages during shampooing are also a plus! read more
