I admit that one of the primary reasons for our trip to London was to find the best fish and chips so I was giddy after eating here. Mission accomplished. There are a few different fish options. I would suggest to stick with the cod. We ordered the sole as well which was still delicious, but the cod was much flakier and "meatier." The fry was absolute PERFECTION. A good fish and chips should be light, crisp, and poufy - meaning elevated and separated from the fish. None of this soggy mushy nonsense offered in the States. Geales executed this to the tee. Add some malt vinegar and aoli, take a swig of your London's Pride beer, and this will send you right into food heaven. Geales alone can warrant another trip back to London. A bit on the pricey side for fish and chips but it is an upscale restaurant and the best fish and chips in the world makes it worth every penny. read more

Geales is the place, atmosphere and food take center stage. This place prepared the best fish dish I've had all week in London. Three at our table had the fish n Chips, great comments to say the least. Lightly battered and nice piece of fish and the chips were crispy too. I had the Lemon sole, with capers and Bernese sauce, with roasted potatoes. The mixed drinks were impeccable, the staff was fantastic, very nice people. Loved the location of this place. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the Notting Hill Gate station area is Geales. We had the chance to soak in the sun and sat in their outside seating. Both of us tried the cod fish and chips. I went with the lunch special which was very reasonably priced. The salad that came with it was much better than I expected in terms of quality of ingredients and size. Fish was fresh and moist and the chips were crispy! Great place! read more

I find it difficult to write a review for a venue that I'm not that excited about, but I feel that it is my responsibility to inform others that are considering trying it out. Geales is one of those places. Before coming here, I read all of the reviews on Yelp. The reviews are pretty mixed, and I wanted to discover for myself how many stars this place really deserves. Geales first opened its doors in 1939. My in-laws used to dine here with their parents. Given it's longevity, my love of fish & chips, short walking distance from my flat, and the fact I've never been here, I decided to give it a try. It is located in charming Notting Hill. The decor is a pleasant mix of contemporary and traditional with dark grey high-gloss walls, hardwood-floors, and white tablecloths. Although Geales considers itself to be a classic fish & chips house, it isn't. I believe a fish & chips house should be casual, friendly and low-key. This place isn't. The clientele is pretty stuffy, and the host, who was also our waiter had an attitude and was very impatient as he took our order. He pretty much demanded that we order a starter and sides even though we weren't that hungry. We requested ice water from the very beginning, and were never served it until we asked a food runner towards the end of our meal. We all ordered the haddock fish & chips special with a bottle of beer for 16.95 pounds each. I asked our waiter if I could have my fish grilled instead of fried since this is an option on the a la carte menu, but he said no. I also asked if I could substitute the fries for a vegetable, and was turned down yet again. Everything took a long time to arrive. While waiting I noticed dark food stains on the bottom of the tablecloth near my lap. The only thing positive I can say about this place is that the haddock fish & chips is massive - - the length of the fried fish is about a foot and a half. The sad part is that about a quarter of the fish length and depth is fried batter. I've had excellent fish & chips where the golden batter is crisp, tasty and floats in your mouth. This batter was doughy, heavy and bland. Two of us had to pretty much dissect through the batter to get to the white flesh haddock. The fries were overly salted as well. After completing our entrees, we weren't in the mood to stay for pudding as sadly the overall dining experience wasn't pleasant. Even though, this place has been open for over 70 years, I have no desire to return. read more

It was our last day in London and I craved the traditional fish and chips meal before departing. Our tour guide earlier in the day suggested this restaurant in Notting Hill for the best "chippys" in the neighborhood. We were fortunate as we walk in without reservations and got the last available table! We were on a walking tour of Knotting Hill and Portabello Road Market on our last day in London. The guide recommended Geales to the group and said they served the best fish-n-chips in London. He described to us how to find the place, behind the gate. After enjoying the market which included a really good whole hog with rocket (arugula) and apple sauce on a ciabatta roll we decided to have our last meal at Geales. Up to this point I had been slightly disappointed with the fish and chips that we consumed during our week stay. The fish here was by far the best of the bunch. You can choose from pollock, cod, haddock or sole. We went with the cod. It was a fresh tasting perfectly fried piece of fish. The batter was much lighter than at the other places. The chips were nothing special. Also, we had starters of olives, dill pickles and bread with olive oil and balsamic. Waiter forgot to bring my onion rings but we really didn't need them anyway. read more

I didn't expect to be impressed by a fish and chips place, but Geales ended up being one of my favorite meals during my stay in London. My husband and I were pleasantly surprised by the appetizers, namely the fried whitebait and the ever so humble sounding pickled herring & anchovies. Geales has happily shattered my preconceived thoughts of herring and anchovies as being blech. I had never seen herring and anchovies look so fresh, silvery and appealing before. I liked that they were served nearly whole. Tasted very fresh, and accented by a light pickling and great balance of saltiness and acidity. As for the star of the show...the fish and chips were cooked perfectly. The batter was crispy and light. With a nicely chilled bottle of white, made for a delicious meal overall. read more

simple, very good brit seafood. stuck in an odd middle ground price point, as it's upscale fish & chips, but the wine list starts at 15GBP (and continues above 150, if that's your thing) and I felt quite a good value. I called on a thursday night at 8:30 and was offered a reservation for 9:15, which was perfect. The service is friendly, and the atmosphere is quiet and nice. I overheard an older gentleman at the next table tell his waitress that the last time he ate at Gaeles was 25 years ago and it's just as good now as it was then. read more

Quite an interesting story. I've travelled a number of times to the UK and have heard great things about Geales. My colleagues and I travelled 5000 miles from West Coast US searching for the "BEST" Fish & Chips. That is where the excitement stops. Before we even had a chance to taste or see the "BEST" Fish & Chips in town, we were told by the waiter at the door that the place was booked for the night, OR so we thought. We checked the reservation system and found out it was completely open. This is extremely disappointing because we expected more from a "classy" restaurant in the heart of Notting Hill. Was there something about us? We were three leaders from a world class publicly listed company - certaintly it wasn't because how we were dressed? I am just confused, and downright disappointed. I guess we'll have to experience Notting Hill another way through another restaurant that cares about our business the next time we travel. What a shame. What a shame. If you like to be abused by the staff and wait exceptionally long amounts of time for your mediocre/ bad food, this is the place for you. We ordered drinks about 10 minutes after we sat down ( were we thirsty? Yes). We ordered food after that. Well, that small order took the better part of an hour to arrive and then it was incomplete.We ordered extremely simple dishes. Salmon toast/chips/crab cakes. My friend guessed that they had run out of food. She was right, but not in the way you might think. She asked our server and was informed that yes they needed to go get food, but it was for the staff. This is a restaurant. With food. Why are they getting take-out from somewhere else? Anyway, our server, when asked about this, said "Well, we need to eat too!!!". Shame on us for not sitting (more) patiently by as they had lunch. She was "fiery". Another table got fed up with the wait too. Granted he was rude but he had been sitting for a long time as well. People that came in after us were served before us..... The argument ensued and the server got right up in his face and asked "Are you a chef? Are you a chef?!!". Lovely. She kicked him out after he told her to shut up. They were both idiots. Our food eventually came. My salmon toast very "crispy", my friend's chips were good but the crab cakes were no were to be seen. They had forgotten them. After an hour?? The crab cakes came 5 minutes later, ice cold inside. Ridiculous. I didn't want to tangle with the server because all though she was small, I'm not sure the both of us could have taken her. The breading on the fish and rings were both quite bland, to the point that I finally salted it. The fish was not very fresh despite my going on a Tuesday. We had trouble eating well in London, but this was one of our favorite places. We had a reservation for 5 and I was glad we did because it was crowded on a Tuesday night. We all had the fish and chips cod, except my husband ordered the sole. I thought the fish was excellent. He didn't like his sole and ended up finishing mine. The only negative about the food is that our order of mushy peas was burnt. I never went to the old Geales (pre-2006 at least) which I've heard had a lot of old-school charm, if not the best fish-n-chips in the world. It's now quite a posh place with a soothing gray/black/white interior - a pleasant spot for a nice dinner out. I only like fish and chips done a certain way and I guess there is a lot of debate as to what constitutes "proper" fish and chips. The best I've had was actually in Edinburgh, battered just enough to be crispy and eaten with soggy chips and extra vinegar on newspaper. Unfortunately, the last time I was there at least, Geales served theirs with a thick fried casing and after cracking into it, I was able to manipulate the fish flesh out quite easily. This is not how I like to eat it. My dining companion loved his, however, so perhaps it is simply a matter of personal preference. The chips were at the other end of the soggy spectrum, so I was disappointed there as well. Finally, we shared a bowl of lobster tagliatelle that was mainly tagliatelle. We skipped dessert but I did want to try the blueberry muffin with custard... not sure that I'll return just for that. read more

There are few options for vegetarians, but the sides are quite good, and the desserts should not be missed. This is a very lovely place in the Notting Hill area. Hub and I literally searched all pubs and restaurants that offers the best beer battered fish and chips. And we def found it here. Among their local fav is the sticky toffee pudding that was not listed on the menu.So good that I wish we were on the next flight to London. No reservations required but most locals do. Waitress was very attentive and friendly. We also had their Shepard's pie and it was delicious. The entrees also came with salad and a bread basket. And Geales is also known for their fresh seafood. Not really worth the prices, IMHO. Being a visitor, I was expecting great fish and chips (£16) but it was nothing spectacular. The fish pie had plenty of seafood, was kind of hearty and filling, but tasted quite bland. The risotto, on the other hand, was flavorful enough but was presented poorly. Note we were the only patrons for the entire time we were there for lunch, and that's never a good sign. One of my goals while in London was to search for the perfect fish & chips. After many misadventures in various pubs, I discovered this gem in Notting Hill. Without a doubt this was the best fish & chips I've ever had. Light, fresh and mouthwatering. And the portion of fish to bread was definitely in favor of the fish. This restaurant is a beautiful blend of rustic and homely. There are at least 50 shades of grey that give the place a modern, shabby chic feel. The food however was a slight letdown. The starter was delicious and came on time. However, the plate was littered with breadcrumbs and Himalayan rock salt, a pointless and annoying decoration.
