Loved the location of this place. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the Notting Hill Gate station area is Geales. We had the chance to soak in the sun and sat in their outside seating. Both of us tried the cod fish and chips. I went with the lunch special which was very reasonably priced. The salad that came with it was much better than I expected in terms of quality of ingredients and size. Fish was fresh and moist and the chips were crispy! Great place!

I find it difficult to write a review for a venue that I'm not that excited about, but I feel that it is my responsibility to inform others that are considering trying it out. Geales is one of those places. Before coming here, I read all of the reviews on Yelp. The reviews are pretty mixed, and I wanted to discover for myself how many stars this place really deserves. Geales first opened its doors in 1939. My in-laws used to dine here with their parents. Given it's longevity, my love of fish & chips, short walking distance from my flat, and the fact I've never been here, I decided to give it a try. It is located in charming Notting Hill. The decor is a pleasant mix of contemporary and traditional with dark grey high-gloss walls, hardwood-floors, and white tablecloths. Although Geales considers itself to be a classic fish & chips house, it isn't. I believe a fish & chips house should be casual, friendly and low-key. This place isn't. The clientele is pretty stuffy, and the host, who was also our waiter had an attitude and was very impatient as he took our order. He pretty much demanded that we order a starter and sides even though we weren't that hungry. We requested ice water from the very beginning, and were never served it until we asked a food runner towards the end of our meal. We all ordered the haddock fish & chips special with a bottle of beer for 16.95 pounds each. I asked our waiter if I could have my fish grilled instead of fried since this is an option on the a la carte menu, but he said no. I also asked if I could substitute the fries for a vegetable, and was turned down yet again. Everything took a long time to arrive. While waiting I noticed dark food stains on the bottom of the tablecloth near my lap. The only thing positive I can say about this place is that the haddock fish & chips is massive - - the length of the fried fish is about a foot and a half. The sad part is that about a quarter of the fish length and depth is fried batter. I've had excellent fish & chips where the golden batter is crisp, tasty and floats in your mouth. This batter was doughy, heavy and bland. Two of us had to pretty much dissect through the batter to get to the white flesh haddock. The fries were overly salted as well. After completing our entrees, we weren't in the mood to stay for pudding as sadly the overall dining experience wasn't pleasant. Even though, this place has been open for over 70 years, I have no desire to return.

The best fish & chips!! And mushy peas...

It was our last day in London and I craved the traditional fish and chips meal before departing. Our tour guide earlier in the day suggested this restaurant in Notting Hill for the best "chippys" in the neighborhood. We were fortunate as we walk in without reservations and got the last available table! The service was excellent as it seemed to be a team effort for drinks, food, etc. The fish was fresh and fried lightly...and my mushy peas were the best! I loved the location and the ambiance of the restaurant and was very pleased to have found it on our last night.

Looking for an authentic intro to genuine British fish and chips and found this based on several local references. It did not disappoint!

However, on deeper inspection - the Cow is a marvelous dining experience - complete with an extensive wine selection, rotating specials, and a bespoken approach to food preparation. The food? Well, it's British pub fare - with a slightly divergent menu on Sundays. Everything is fresh and beautifully plated. The bangers and mash was exceptional. The green bean salad was so unique and popping with flavors, I scribbled the ingredients list in an attempt to reproduce the dish at home. The atmosphere is hopping - it's a small pub ambience and there is not any wasted space. Not to fear, the delightful staff can help find a table for your party. I was a bit intimidated walking in on a Sunday night all by myself. My trepidation quickly went away as the server made it easy to relax and enjoy my evening. As a small aside, I sat next to the small kitchen space on the main floor. To see the amazing plates being prepared one after the other in that tiny kitchen, well . . . that was an amazing experience in and of itself. Chapeau to the chef. Truly a masterpiece to put out such accomplished food from a space no larger than most bathrooms.

The cauliflower itself is more on the salty side, but the sauce and grapes help to balance out the salinity. Duck fat fries The fries were hands down the best part of the meal. The size of the fries were perfect and they were nice and crispy while maintaining a soft pillowy interior. They were also well seasoned and didn't need any sauce. 30-day Tamworth Pork Double Loin Chop The pork chop is an interesting situation where it takes over 45 minutes to prepare due to the sheer thickness of the pork chop. After the wait, the pork chop just ends up being just alright. It's nicely cooked and served with some kind of jus. Ultimately this dish would've been eliminated on Culinary Class Wars because there was some sinew in the pork chop. Ginger Beer This ginger beer was the most expensive one I tried and it just ranks third out of 4 ginger beers. The flavor is more tame than I'd like.

Incredible service, perfect food. So happy to have them around the corner! I absolutely love Pescheria Mattiucci! This new place open around the corner from me and at first glace I though it was a new fish monger opening up on a very hot piece of real estate, but then walking by at night I saw people dining there! It's a fish monger by day, seafood restaurant by night. It is run by a family from Napoli who import fresh fish from the family fishing boat. Each day there is fresh fish of the day that was just caught. The owner is super friendly and more than happy to tell you all about the day's product and recommend the best wine to accompany it. They have a couple outposts in Italy and this is their first venture outside the country and it is a huge hit, especially with the neighbouring Italian competitors. At first I thought it was another place that would shut down 6 months later, but I have found myself back here time and again, each time saying "this is THE spot, the best local!". I recommend just putting your meal in the hands of the owner who will most definitely come by your table (there are only about 6 or 7 tables) and order what he suggests as it changes daily. There is always a veggie starter dish that is excellent! Highly recommended, usually consisting of 5 small tasters, and all very well though out. If you have a complex of not mixing fish and dairy (with the obvious exceptions) this place will change your mind. I feel so lucky to have this around the corner, in fact I am about to run out for some fresh fish to cook in tonight! Definitely swing by when you're in the neighbourhood.

We actually walked up to another restaurant for a second meal as we were still hungry. Tip: Avoid this place.
