We had a reservation for 8:30 and we called to tell them we were running a little late. 10 min later When we came in we were greeted and guided to complimentary coat check. Then walked us to our booth which we requested ahead of time. And our waitress explained the menu, and suggested her favorites and most popular food options. I've been wanting to try Geja's for years. My only other fondue experience has been at the Melting Pot, but I prefer to support local Mom and Pop type places when I can, especially when they've been around Chicago for years. After reading the great reviews I figured I was in for a solid meal. Although the food was alright, I feel we could have had a much better meal for a lot cheaper at another restaurant. We had made a reservation days before but we were seated in the first table which is essentially behind the host podium and between two narrow aisles, so I spent the meal tucked as close to our table as possible trying not to get bumped. Being so cramped, you also had to speak loudly if you wanted to talk. The table next to us was so close that I didn't feel comfortable having any type of romantic or private conversation, it sort of felt like being at a work meeting before it had begun. Our server had a robotic personality and did very little to explain how everything worked, although we told him I had never been to Geja's and my date had never been to any sort of fondue restaurant. I suppose that added a certain exciting challenge to spice up the meal. On to the food. You don't get a choice on the kind of cheese or chocolate fondue you get, which wasn't as fun. The cheese had a chalky consistency that I didn't mind so much but my date didn't like it at all. The bread dippers seemed a bit stale, my date said his lobster wasn't very good and my $38 vegetarian meal included baby carrots... something I wouldn't expect to see at a nice place (basically the reject carrots that get washed in bleach). I saw another review that complained about the vegetarian meal but I'm pretty easy to please and assumed they were just being a "Yelp critic". Unfortunately, they were pretty spot on with their review. There was a nice selection of dipping sauces which we liked and the chocolate seemed good quality. Really, the only part of our visit to Geja's we enjoyed was the guy who came to check on the fondue pots. He was able to answer the couple of questions we had after our waiter disappeared, and he was really friendly. I found every step of the experience to be lacking and uncomfortable.... I'm really not sure how so many people find this place romantic! Had we been seated at a booth it would have been more comfortable but I still would have been disappointed with the service and the meal. We drank water and I got the cheapest meal and still spent enough to cringe when the bill came. All in all, a big disappointment. As we left, we gave each other a "well, it was worth a shot" look. While not as high end as I remember, it is still worth a visit. We had great food, excellent wine suggested by our server, and wonderful service. The ambiance makes for a cozy and inviting feel. We were pleasantly surprised by the wine prices being 50% off, so we were able to afford two bottles for the table. We went with our daughter and son-in-law who had never been before. We all had a wonderful time. This is not an inexpensive meal, but a nice change from a more traditional restaurant setting. We have been going to Geja's Cafe for the last 22 years in the week (or two) before Christmas, to celebrate our youngest daughter's birthday. More than just a tradition, it is a celebration at year's end. Last year was difficult, but we took advantage of the take out fondue, and it was ... great! Just what we needed at the end of a difficult year. This year we returned to the restaurant, with a request for a table for eight. Initially we were told that their large tables were booked, so we reserved two four tops, requesting they seat us at adjacent tables. Once again, Geja's was magical, and when we arrived they had created a table for eight, just for our family. It was wonderful! We really appreciate the consideration, and everyone loved their meal. I heartily encourage you to go for dinner, make it an experience, and enjoy the evening. Perfect atmosphere to be intimate and personal. I used this place to celebrate my anniversary. The servers made sure to make that special for me. The food itself was decent. So I'm going to out myself and open myself up to ridicule and shame by saying, I loved The Melting Pot and was super bummed when they left Chicago (I know, I know). But for my wedding anniversary this year, since I live right by Geja's in LP I figured it would be a fun place to try. For starters, they noticed I mentioned it was our anniversary in my open table res, and when they called to confirm my res they asked how many years and wrote us a lovely card which they gave us when we were seated (so thoughtful!). We had a great table right in front of the guitar player - another nicety I appreciated. One thing that I kind of think Melting Pot did better is that they had options for cheese and chocolate. This place has one cheese option, and one chocolate option. You can pick your proteins for your main, but the rest is set. I liked what they offered, but again - it's nice to have choices! Service started out GREAT. Super attentive, really nice, all the way through our entree. And then, it was like we just could not find our server. He was there, but he was waiting on a bunch of other tables, and remember - there's a lot for the server to talk about with fondue (how long the food cooks, which sauces go with what, etc etc) so he was just so busy with everyone else it took forever to clear our entrees and bring dessert. (I'll also mention I'm 9 months preg and due with a baby in 2 weeks, and after sitting for 2+ hours I was starting to get a little uncomfortable). But - we waved him down, got our dessert, and were on our way. As far as food - I liked the cheese and the chocolate. Entrees - eh. I mean I feel like frying pieces of meat and seafood in a vat of oil is not exciting (and it costs a lot which is weird), so if I went back I'd go for just app and dessert. I also wished they gave you a little basket or something to help "fish out" stuff that falls off your fork, because that happens, and then you're screwed. Melting Pot used to give you one (sorry to keep mentioning MP but that's the only other fondue place I've been!). Great spot on the border of Old Town and Lincoln Park. I had a blast at this place because the meal is super interactive. The starter is the cheese fondue which was amazing. I didn't know onion slices and cheese could be so good! Next was the meat portion of the meal. We got chicken and steak which was delicious - you cook it up in oil in the pot and then you have a TON of different dipping sauces. The last was the chocolate fondue served with a ton of great stuff! Make sure to wear something you dont normally wear everyday because the smell does not come out of clothes for a while - but it is definitely worth it and the atmosphere is really fun! read more

This place is so amazing and thanks to Groupon we were able to find this place during our short trip to Chicago. My girlfriend made a reservation for our anniversary at this restaurant and it was such an experience. This is a three course meal, which stars off with a cheese fondue as your appetizer. The cheese fondue included a variety of bread and fruit, which can be enhance with a quick dip to your melting cheese fondue. It was fantastic and the cheese has a hint of wine in it. So delicious! Second is your main course which you cook in a pot of oil. Such a great way to spend dinner with your significant others. Lastly, they end your three course meal with a chocolate fondue and a cup of coffee. Nonetheless, it was one of the most unique experience I've had in a restaurant. We spent almost 3 hours there. This is great for an anniversary, birthday celebration or a significant event/celebratory event. Nice experience here. The restaurant was quaint with a nod to a very European style setting. I can see why it's rated the most romantic in Chicago. The variety of fondue was great, and I loved the aspect of cooking our own meats right at our table. It definitely set this restaurant apart. We got a couple of the 4 course meals (salad, cheese/bread fondue, beef and chicken with veggies, chocolate/fruit fondue for dessert) and it was fun combining all of the different foods. Awesome cocktails and wine here as well! The only reason I knocked off a star was because it was almost pitch black inside. We couldn't read the menus or really see any of the food without the source of our phone's flashlight. I understand the romantic appeal that a candlelit dinner vibe brings, but being so dark that we can't see isn't fun. read more

WOW! If you want the perfect date night with INCREDIBLE service this is the place to go! This was our second time here tonight and our waiter was Horacio, and he was one of the best waiters I'VE EVER HAD. He made sure to constantly check if our drinks were full, and explained every sauce that came with the meal, he also explained very thoroughly any of the questions we had for him! We had reservations at 8:30 and got seated on time, we had a table right by the hostess station, I was a little nervous about this since we were by the door but she the hostess was so quiet and respectful as well! (Very Pretty Blonde, Sorry! We didn't catch her name!) Anyone that walked in she seated right away so that we wouldn't be bothered with people standing right by our table waiting! I really like this place, I would give it 4.5 stars. I read some of the reviews, and understood some of the critiques, but some didn't make sense to me. So here's my take on the pros, cons and neither. Pros: - Good portions: Don't worry, even though the food is cut into bite sizes, you will be full. - The food is solid. Very good, not the best ever, but still very good. I liked how a salad is included. I've been to a couple fondue places before and they usually don't offer a salad. I liked the cheese fondue, surprisingly, fresh cut apples go well with cheese. I liked the entree. The combo had chicken, beef, lobster, scallops, shrimp, mushroom, onions, peppers, potatoes and broccoli. I don't understand the complaints about the meat not being seasoned. I've been to a couple of fondue places and the meat was never seasoned. It doesn't make sense to me either, why would you season the meat if it's dipped and cooked in a seasoned broth and served with sauces? Seasoning the meat seems like seasoning overkill. I read the complaints about the oil not being flavorful so I opted to not go with the oil. I don't know what know it tastes like so I can't comment on it. Instead I went with the vegetable broth, which is an option, as stated on their menu. The vegetable broth had a salty flavor and was decent. We let the onion slices cook in there from the beginning to add an onion flavor. The sauces were average, nothing spectacular. I didn't that much sauce anyhow, the broth already had salt in it. My favorites were the barbecue, horseradish and one of the sweet chili sauces. The dessert chocolate fondue was my favorite. I like how the fondue was on fire for a little while so you can roast your marshmallows. You should mix the sauce after the fire goes out. They had crushed graham crackers, which you can sprinkle on the marshmallows to make s'mores, strawberries, banana, pineapple, apples, rice krispies and pound cake. - You can book reservations online at Open Table. I get Google calendar invite with the address and reward points, so this is a plus for me. - Ambiance. It is a very cute, quaint and romantic place. The lighting is dim, there's candlelight, the decor has a nice vibe and there is a live guitarist (whom my boyfriend tipped, I'm not really sure what the protocol is or how much we should've tipped). - Service. The waiters were attentive and checked in frequently. I have no complaints. Cons: - The tables are small and tightly packed. I would not bring a large party here. It's really more of a place for a romantic dinner for 2. If you have to bring people, I would go no more than party of 4 max. - Related to the small space, I had to use the bathroom twice (I drank a lot of water and diet cokes) and wasn't looking forward to getting up. I was kind bumping into chairs, had to wait in a line (note the bathroom is unisex) and it was hard to maneuver around the limited space. There are 2 bathrooms. - The place gets packed. We were here on a Wednesday night and it was pretty busy. I definitely recommend a reservation. Neither: - Pricey if you pay full price (which I wouldn't), but not too bad if you use a coupon. We purchase a $65 Groupon for $25, there were also Restaurant Week deals going on during the week. We got the combo, which was about $60/pp before the Groupon. It included salad, cheese fondue, meat/seafood fondue and chocolate fondue. In total, with 2 combos and a diet coke, the whole thing came out to be about $125 including tax and 20% tip ($100 at the restaurant + $25 for the Groupon) for 2 people. To me, that's pretty good, especially for fondue. If that's too much for your budget, this is probably not the right restaurant selection for you and you'll be happier going to a less expensive place. - There's a coat check in the front. I recommend using it, there will be no space for your coats/jackets at the tables. read more

Excellent experience. This establishment is so wonderfully romantic. It has a dark, old world style to it. Appropriate dress attire is required. Perfect for date night. Service was fantastic. Our waiter Michael was amazing. Very informative and polite. The food was great. We are at our own pace and was never rushed. Restrooms were very clean. All staff was pleasant. We will definitely be back. Only "complaint" ( I loosely use that term) was that we noticed all of our clothes, coats, hair... everything... smelled like a deep fryer afterwards. Lol. When it comes to price in regards to food, in my opinion they need to be in perfect marriage. This was my first fondue experience, and I was glad I chose this place. First, the service was great! I mean all the way from the call to verify my reservation, to being asked if I was celebrating a special occasion (which I was) and with no question the caller mentioned a booth seat that could be available and that he would put me down for one. Upon arriving I waited no more then 5 minutes to be seated from the time of my reservation. The booth option was a hit! Now, the price.....it is steep, your gonna spend a bit over a 100.00 dollars for two people without drinks if you go with the four course meal, but it is the best bang for your buck. I will be honest though, I was a bit worried that I was in a place only using the area as a mask to be high priced, but I said "meh, YOIO It..." So, getting to the point...delicious, eat here, everything. The quality of the food was perfectly matched to the price, I saw perfectly why they would charge the price they charge. The portions were perfect, even for fat guys like me (chubby, cant speak for bigger than that sorry). The four course meal included the most delicious cheese fondue with bread and apples. Now, I have never had melted cheese on apples, holly s$%t is it a party in your mouth, and every freakin cheese flavor, ans apple cider was invited. My wife and I literally left the fondue pot so empty, that the scrapes of cheese leftover hardened. Lastly, we got a sexy chocolate fondue for dessert with a plethora of fruit, marshmallows and wait for it....rice mutha f'in crispy treats. WOW! Now, they were normal sized portions so I maybe exaggerating a bit, but OMG. So if your reading this, go spend your money, don't be a negative nelly, and enjoy the flavors. Okay. I just didn't understand paying that much..I guess maybe they charge so much for the experience? We went only because there was a Thanksgiving thank you deal, but I wouldn't ever go and pay full price, that's just ridiculous. First off, you'll get a cheese fondue with bread, apples, and grapes, and a side salad. I felt like they almost rushed us through this first course because they kept asking, are you done? Are you ready for your main course? Can we take this away? When we were clearly still working on it... Then came the main course, I was so excited since I ordered beef tenderloin, shrimp, and lobster tail. Then they brought out the main dish and I was so underwhelmed. The portion was SO tiny. But they give you a heaping pile of veggies. Then the waiter explains how many minutes everything needs to fry in the oil. Which also was kind of annoying because we had to set timers on our phone each time we fried something. Also what grossed me out was the fact that we were frying every veggie and meat/seafood. My clothes smelled like oil afterwards. I was quite unhappy with that. Then came the last part, the chocolate dipping sauce. Get the Prince Geja's combo if you like seafood & meat. In my prior experience, my husband ordered Deluxe Seafood because he wanted seafood and I ordered Prince Geja's. The orders was the same amount of seafood except I had extra meat, which I ended up giving him because I felt bad I got more food. Dinner starts with bread, apples, and grapes with guyere cheese. Then you get your order with 4 fondue sticks, and 8 sauces. You can ask for more bread or sauces. You end with desserts (s'more to start, and I can't remember the rest because I was too full). This seems to be the only place in Chicago that sells fondue. How? How does a place with such a cold climate not sell fondue anywhere else? But anyway, I saw the Groupon for it and decided to purchase it as it seemed like a good deal. I also hadn't had my winterly fix for some hearty fondue. So when I got to the restaurant, I was initially a bit confused by the whole set up in the set menus, but ordered it anyway. The place itself felt very old, rustic and quite disneyland-ish. It is also very, very cramped and to an extent, feels a bit dirty because of how old the place is. There are empty wine bottles for decor which I can see adding character, but to me was just concerning. The only redeeming quality for me for this place was the cheese fondue, the starter of my meal, which I wish enjoyed more during the rest of my meal. It was good, hit the spot, but really just was not the best quality fondue I have ever had. The entree, for me being a vegetarian, was a couple of vegetables I could fry in the soybean oil pot. Its an interesting concept but the soybean oil really gets everywhere and makes you feel like you smell as if you were fried. It tasted good and was a fun experience but the sauces to dip it in were really not great. I did not think any were exceptional and it felt a bit awkwardly put together with some Asian sauces and then 2 types of mustard and some other sauces I didn't quite know. Lastly, the chocolate fondue was good - but the quality of chocolate was really quite poor. I also wish they gave more toppings that were nice like marshmallows and strawberries! 3-4 of them for 2 people feels way too little. Ultimately, the experience was nice for the first time but probably never again. The waiter was not friendly. I told him 3 times and he wrote down the voucher for my groupon and he still forgot and charged us full price. The time between courses was extensive and the waiter was no where to be seen. We were stuck with dirty plates and boiling oil. I took my boyfriend here for his 36th birthday and I am so glad I did. We had a great dining experience with exceptional service. Geja's lived up to it's reputation as Chicago's number 1 romantic restaurant. I bought the Groupon to save $20 and made a reservation for Saturday night. We arrived a bit early so we sat at the bar and ordered drinks while we waited to be called. A must try is the cheese spread at the bar, absolutely delicious. The bar is relatively small and the bartender this evening was fabulous. We had requested a booth upon arriving as other reviews had recommended and the request was met. It was definitely worth it, especially for a more private and romantic dining experience. Our server was Mario, and he was exceptional from beginning to end. We ordered a bottle of sparkling wine to celebrate and Mario made sure our glasses were never empty. To start, I really enjoyed the cheese fondue, it was rich, creamy, and smooth. Geja's salad was also very good, I really liked the dressing. As our main course we both chose The Connoisseur, which included aged beef tenderloin, jumbo gulf shrimp, and succulent lobster tail. The meat and seafood were all very fresh, and delicious. As a sauce person, I couldn't have been happier with the selection of eight to choose from. After, my boyfriend received a birthday dessert and our server set up our chocolate fondue to roast our marshmallows. Pretty full by this point, so we just dipped a few items. Classic Fondue with Cozy Atmosphere! I went to Geja's on a date last Friday, and it was terrific. The service was attentive, and each course was delicious. The cheese course was especially flavorful, and I loved the bread and apples that came with it. We went with a surf & turf-type combo for the main course, which was delicious. The chocolate was exactly what I would have expected except that it also included an open flame to toast marshmallows! Overall an adorable atmosphere, a setup that makes you think the classic days of the 1950s are back, and delicious food. What more could you want?!? read more

This is honestly not the best fondue I've ever had. The place smells so strongly of sterno (the little gas containers they use to keep the fondue hot) that its actually really off putting when you first walk in. Its very dark and stuffy inside which is probably meant to be romantic but for me was uncomfortable. The actual fondue was not great. They only have one kind of cheese fondue which isn't a great flavor. It was pretty strongly cut with wine. I usually love apples and cheese fondue but it really didn't mix well with their kind of cheese. I typically have a hard time pacing myself with cheese fondue but this was pretty easy to put down. Geja's Cafe is outstanding. Lovely atmosphere, location, and food. They are also on Groupon so that's always a plus.

This is a place where you go on a special occasion, like an anniversary. It is SO romantic, with rustic decor and VERY dim lighting. It was definitely hard to read the menu by candlelight, so I needed to use the flashlight on my phone (showing my age haha). We did the dinner menu, and started off with the cheese fondue. There was a variety of food, such as grapes, apples, and bread to dip into the cheese, all of which were great! Next we had a side salad, which was lettuce and little else. They put the dressing directly on the salad, and don't have an option to have it on the side which sucks. Next, we did the meat fondue. He got beef and shrimp, and I got chicken and scallops. Since it was so dark, I was a worried about our food being cooked all the way through. There were 8 dipping sauces, all of which were amazing. The Sriracha sauce was the best one I think! Finally, the chocolate fondue was the highlight of the dinner experience with strawberries, marshmallows, rice krispies, etc. I would only come here for very special occasions, because $150 for two was a little intense. read more
