I will start by saying that the person helping us, possibly the owner, was the nicest man. He had such a wonderful personality, was super kind and helpful, and you could see the passion he has for gelato. He even mentioned making the passionfruit gelato freshly that day. While I truly enjoyed him as a person, I can't say I loved the gelato. I like that they have different-colored spoons for the vegan options so they are clearly distinguishable from the non-vegan options. But, I think it's strange that you can't sample to determine which option you like. You basically have to go all in and hope for the best. I mentioned being on the fence about which flavor to choose because I already have a favorite passionfruit gelato at another shop (see reviews). The maybe owner boasted about winning awards and how it would be much better than my favorite. I loved his confidence, so I decided to go with half lychee and half passionfruit as they are two of my favorite fruits and sorbet flavors. I thought they both were just okay, not as creamy as I expected and too sweet for my taste. I love passionfruit because it's typically sour and refreshing; this one was good, but it was sweeter than I expected it to be, taking away from the fruits' tangy, citrusy sourness. The lychee was even more sweet, and I feel like the floral and slightly tart flavors didn't come through because of that. I didn't finish my small cup, which isn't completely uncommon for me when it comes to sweets that are too sweet. I'm not sure if I would come back to try more flavors because I didn't enjoy what should be my top two flavors and I'm not able to try before I buy. read more

There's something special about strolling along Historic Murphy Avenue after dinner and finishing the evening with gelato, especially with the beautiful weather we've been enjoying lately. My all-time favorite gelato flavor is banana. Unfortunately, I usually leave gelato shops disappointed because they either don't carry it or try to make it too fancy. I've been told I'm a "purist" when it comes to food, and I have to agree. Nothing ruins banana gelato for me faster than mixing it with chocolate, caramel, or other add-ins (except for nuts). I like banana to taste like... banana. So you can imagine how excited I was to see that their banana flavor was simply that--banana. Even though I ordered a small, the gentleman behind the counter kindly offered me two flavors. I happily added Chocolate Mint. While preparing my order, the grandson shared that his grandfather was in the back making another batch of banana gelato by mashing fresh organic bananas. In fact, many of their fruit gelatos are made with fresh fruit. That's one of the things I miss most about Italy, where so many gelaterias rely on simple, high-quality ingredients. My banana gelato was delicious and exactly what I'd hoped for--fresh, creamy, and pure banana flavor. My husband ordered Mango and Lychee. Those were delicious too. One final note: they don't offer samples, and it's clearly stated on the display case. Personally, I appreciate that policy. We've visited shops where endless sample requests slow the line to a crawl. My philosophy is simple: if I enjoy it, I'll be back. From so many flavors to choose and 365 days in the year, there's no reason to make one decision your final one. Just come back next time and try something different. read more

Was in the area and wanted dessert after dinner so I stopped into this shop for some gelato! It was pretty quiet in the small shop on a Friday evening. I asked the employee if they offer samples as it was my first time there but store policy doesn't allow it so I just asked for flavor recommendations instead. They have plenty of flavors but I am lactose intolerant and asked if they had any non-dairy ones and they had a good selection! I ended up getting the mango flavor which the employee said was made with fresh mango and a coconut base and it was delicious. The mango flavor was refreshing and not artificial. The coconut base was not really distinguishable which I was relieved about because I was afraid the coconut would overpower the mango but that was not the case. Talked to me and my boyfriend like we were idiots. When my boyfriend tried to pay he kept yelling and saying "you're not doing it the right way. other way other way." Stopped in for an afternoon sweet treat with the nieces. There were an abundant of flavor profiles to choose from and the best part -- everything is made to its perfection in-house. The young man running the front of the house was the grandson of the mastermind himself (grandpa was in the kitchen putting together his perfected gelato recipes). We each ordered a different flavor and they were all exactly as such -- not overly sweet or overbearing, and with the right tones of chocolate or fruit. I love a gelato or sorbet (I opted for sorbet) on a hot afternoon. It hits differently in comparison to its ice cream counterpart. The design against the wall using the cups to draw out their name is clever and a subtle marketing tactic -- love it. Samples are not honored so you should have a pretty good idea of your flavor preference. By not providing samples, it can help manage costs (extra spoons, etc. and prevent the spread of potential germs). I support it and am not complaining. In addition to Italian Ice Cream, these guys also offer milk shakes and pints and quarts to take to-go. Grab a sweet treat and keep strolling through the various surrounding shops and restaurants. Their pistachio gelato had a stronger pistachio nut taste than other ice cream shops and those sold in grocery stores. The guava gelato is closer to a sorbet than ice cream. Gelato... no, this isn't gelato, it was watered down mealy beads of sugary ice water. Very disappointed. I had quite high expectations for this gelato location. The store looked promising and the flavor choices gave off classic gelato vibes. I was excited. After trying out some of the various options, I soon realized that it's pretty bad. The gelato completely lacked the quality and traits of what gelato should be. A true gelato should have unbelievably creamy texture that blends the flavors together harmoniously rather than the mealy texture of watery sugary beads that this location offers. We asked if we could sample any flavors but unfortunately they don't offer samples. They do let you mix the flavors you get so you can order the mix that you'd like. And the server let us know the yellow handles were the sorbet while the blue handles are ice cream which was a really nice add. I ordered lychee and lemon. The lychee was mild and paired well with the tangy lemon. Both were white so it was a bit of a surprise as to which I tasted first. Rude and unacceptable customer service: We have been a regular customer at Bella Roma in Sunnyvale for years and often come with my three sons. But after our visit last night, I'm seriously reconsidering ever coming back. The owner gave me the wrong flavor in my order. When I politely let him know, he looked at me and said, "There is nothing I can do," and walked away. No apology. No effort to fix the mistake. Just completely dismissive and rude. This isn't how you treat loyal customers--or any customer, for that matter. Mistakes happen, but refusing to correct them or even acknowledge them is unacceptable.
