On this visit, we tried the Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper, and it was absolutely amazing! I never expected balsamic vinegar to pair so perfectly with strawberry. I've only been to the San Ramon location and there was a crazy line there! I love this place! I got a cup with two scoops that were each split to get four flavors total. strawberry honey balsamic & black pepper, honey lavender, pear & blue cheese, and arbequina olive oil. Honey lavender is my favorite, the lavender is very noticeable and the honey more subtle. Strawberry honey balsamic definitely has a vinegary flavor to it which I found really interesting and enjoyable. I didn't notice the black pepper as much. I couldn't really taste the olive oil flavor besides noticing that it tasted savory and "oily" -- I'm not sure if I was expecting a more olive flavor to it even though olive oil itself probably doesn't have too much olive flavor in it. Other people have told me olive oil is their favorite though! The pear flavor was really crisp and there were both pear pieces and blue cheese pieces in it that added texture and were subtle but definitely there. The savoryness of the blue cheese really popped at moments against the pear which I really liked. Staff is also really pleasant and helpful whenever you have questions. The place is really clean and there's outdoor seating with shade available, I came on a Tuesday at noon and there was plenty of seating. read more

The open air courtyard this shop is tucked in offers a slightly quieter break from the busier mall around it. Service is quick, and the team members are happy to provide you with as many samples as you'd like. I've tried many of the unique flavors from Salt and Straw's rotating menu, including apple and cheddar cinnamon rolls, strawberry pretzel salad, and cake batter chocolate fudge (one of my favorites). All of the flavors have been great, even the ones with unconventional combos! Their best flavor, though, is on their permanent menu. The salted, malted, chocolate chip cookie dough is by far the best cookie dough ice cream I've ever had, and one of the top ice cream flavors I've had period. What's nice as you can sample the flavors before you choose and I tried three flavors and Settled on the apple pie, which had big chunks of apple and pie crust. The ice cream was creamy but not overly fatty. We actually walked by a half a dozen ice cream and dessert places to get to salt and straw so definitely seek them out before you settle for something Less amazing. Traci took us to a new area and there was Salt & Straw. What a life saver! These little boys had all met up in front for I think a birthday. As we walked to the entrance, I heard one yell let's go and get our ice cream and started running, and when he ran past me... Me: Heeeeeyyyy no cuts! Then I heard a parent tell him to stop. Laughing, I said I was only kidding, but the parents were great and said, "no, go ahead please." The young women inside were very friendly. Definitely one of my favorite dessert spots in the bay area. There are lots of other ice cream/soft serve/gelato places in Valley Fair, but their ice cream flavors are unbeatable. Their scoops are large and they switch flavors out often. My favorite is the snickerdoodle, but I also enjoyed their apple seasonal flavors this month. Also, their waffle cone is perfectly sweet and crispy. The only reason why I took off one star is because their ice cream is one the sweeter end and probably a little too sweet for me. It was partially good but I'm not sure they've got the format right. Yes I'm morbidly curious (and maybe we all should be?) about the more exotic flavors - "blue cheese and pear" and "goat cheese / marionberry / habanero" come to mind - but does the minimum serving size need to be the size of a baseball? The "goat cheese / marionberry / habanero" was indeed tasty, for about one or two bites. And then I'm like, you know what's also good? Just having some goat cheese and marionberry and habanero in non-ice-cream format, without adding massive amounts of sugar and fat to it. I had a somewhat similar reaction to the "caramel ribbons and sea salt" - which tasted oddly like.... plain milk? Again, an interesting concept but why does this need to be ice cream and why do I need this much of it? My friend and I didn't come close to finishing either of those. From the "more recognizable as ice cream" part of the menu, they had the "salted malted" which was tasty but not that novel. The overall winner for me was the "arbequina olive oil." The whole "Olive oil and salt on vanilla ice cream" trend started taking off in SF about ten years ago, and it's interesting to see someone just cut out the middle man and make a flavor of it - and a successful one: super creamy and just sweet enough. Incidentally, arbequina is the right varietal of olive oil; something woodier like koroneiki might've tasted off... you know, like blue cheese and pear. Sorry, low blow. I'd like to see them offer a paid tasting flight with smaller portions. Something in between the free-but-time-consuming samples and the ginormous-but-quick full scoops. read more

This is coming from someone who is crazy about sweets. I've given this place a try two times, but I won't be coming back. The only time olive oil has let me down is when it's nowhere to be found. This location is at a mall and that can be a bit annoying in consideration of parking, but I will often brave the crowds to satisfy my cravings. The decor is wood heavy.
