As a person who lived in Italy for several years and visits often, I'm used to the good quality gelato in select locations in my favorite cities. I've tried many locations that claim to be gelato and they certainly aren't. Until I found Gelato 101. First of all, this is a dog friendly location with seating area inside and outside, along with doggy bowls filled with cold water. As you walk in, there's a great variety of gelato to pick from. The young lady behind the counter was nice and helpful. I tried couple of flavors and purchased two scoops for us. I got Mascarpone with lemon zest and Mojito. They were delicious! My husband got Pistachio and Coconut. He absolutely loved it! There is a limited amount of space for parking on the side of the restaurant. But if it's filled up, there's plenty of free parking on the street (depending on time of year/tourist season). Looking forward to coming back and trying more flavors. The staff also informed me that they create new flavors every day and get recipes/ingredients directly from Italy. read more

Solid. I wanted some caffeine, so went with a black tea boba with 25% sugar. It was barely sweetened, which I really liked, but if you're into sweeter drinks, it is surprisingly less sweet than standard boba places. I also tried the chocolate gelato, which was a decadent, bittersweet chocolate. It was delicious. Outdoor patio has cute seating. It's also a great corner location for people watching. read more

The gelato was the best I have ever had! They have lots of flavors that switch out every day. The service was very fast but it gets busy sometimes so there is a short line. The out door patio is perfect for enjoying your treat. The flavors I got were passion fruit and black vanilla. read more

I've been craving some afogato for a while, but wherever I went so far didn't have afogato due to limited availability.(literally sold out everywhere I don't know why! Probably we visited at least 5 gelato shops and Italian restaurants) Fortunately, this place had one! Afogato was ok, the gelato might have been a little bit too sweet or espresso wasn't strong enough or both... it was ok:) This place has very pretty outdoor seating and located in the heart of Downtown Encinitas, I enjoyed staying and admiring the city since Encinitas is one of the prettiest town in my opinion. The gelato was pretty darn good! I must say it isn't one of my favorites but pretty darn close! The service was ok the girl kept ignoring us as I kept trying to talk to her to order she kept talking to another person and not paying us any mind until finally she said I can help whenever you are ready and I responded with we've been waiting for you. It's definitely perfect for a date night to hanging out with friends and family it's not quite nor loud it's the perfect amount of noise. Parking was crazy today which was a bonus. read more

Ice cream here it's very tasty! You can tell the quality of their gelato, it is super creamy and very rich. Have a great writer, dairy free options available as well. The gelato as well as the coffee was excellent, perfect spot to grab some ice cream before heading down to the beach. Located right on the main shopping street, parking is sparse but you should be able to find some thing in the area and walk within a block or two. Highly recommended! read more

I was craving something sweet to drink and I saw they had boba drinks. There are a ton of flavors like rose, lychee, thai tea, etc. I got the peach snow bubble with boba. The boba was the perfect texture and had a slight sweetness from the honey. The workers were super sweet and I got my drink pretty quickly. The atmosphere is adorable and there is a ton of seating. I want to come back to try the gelato. read more

This was a fun place by the beach. We came here at night and ate our gelato by the fire. There were plenty of flavors to choose from. We waited in line for about 10 mins to order. The line moved fast. Service was friendly. It seemed like a popular place to hang out. read more

The gelato is good not great. Consistency more like ice cream. Doesn't have the stringy nature of real Italian gelato. I ordered a small size (actually a kid's size) on a small sugar cone. Not a waffle cone. They charged me $1 extra for a cone. Are you kidding me. I don't think I'll be back. They charged $5.80 total for my mini scoop and cone. read more

This is a very nice gelato place in the busy strip of Encinitas. It was like walking into a nice little house with a pretty front yard where you can sit. They have really good coffee, affogato and other drinks to cool you off. I'm a sucker for anything with hazelnut chocolate, or some unique flavor. I went straight for the Nutella crunch, and it definitely was the right decision. It was delicious, smooth textured, and just perfect for a warm summer day. The seating area is really cool, you feel like you're sitting outside a nice cottage as you get to people watch and enjoy your cold treat. The service was great, and overall a really good experience while visiting the city of Encinitas. read more

We came here after finding out that Handel's was closing for the evening (& closing for good to become another ice cream place!) So, I forgot to take a picture; we just dove right into our gelato! Lol. We got black vanilla and Nutella. Yummm!! Black vanilla was the family favorite choice of the two. Customer service was great! Both employees were friendly and they were fast, so we weren't waiting in line for long, at all. Customers have to wear masks and social distance in line, so that was nice. The employees were wearing masks as well. We will definitely come back. There isn't a ton of parking, but we got lucky and got a spot right away! read more

Great snack on the way back from the beach. You might have to stand around when you get yours since there's not much of anywhere to sit, but it's a great corner to people-watch from. And as exotic as the black vanilla flavor sounds, it's totally just vanilla -- any other flavor is the adventure you want. read more

Absolute must if you're in Encinitas this is my husband & toddler's favorite go to spot they have came here twice in one day just to have the gelato. They love this place it's wonderful because they also have boba and chai. I'm Taiwanese and have had some of the best boba around the world and this place surprised me as the quality of their drinks are top notch. 5 stars and a must try! read more

These past few days have been pretty hot outside. We wanted to cool down with some gelato Gelato is a frozen dessert that originates in Italy. It is similar to ice cream with the main difference being that gelato uses less fat and is packed with flavor. We ordered the black vanilla, pistachio, and sugar free hazelnut in one cup. And we also got the tiramisu, mixed berry, and the sea salt caramel in another cup. Each flavor packed such a strong punch, and each taste very different from the others. Unfortunately when I had walked in the young lady was occupied on her phone and we weren't really greeted I understand it may have been close to closing and she is younger may be her first job but still not a great impression to have as everything else was enjoyable. read more

The cutest little gelato shop in the cutest little Cali town. Delicious flavor profiles and wonderfully warm staff. We had an affagato-- The espresso was delightfully bitter and the ice cream smooth and sweet. I would like to shout out to the young female brunet (you were working at 8:30 on Saturday night) . You manned the entire front with a smile on your face, quickly, and efficiently. While the two blonde gentleman working with you, one on the register the other standing in the back, goofed off. All the staff and everyone are wearing masks. The areas for eating and drinking are all sectioned off and six feet apart, which is really nice. Plus, the entire place and the ambience is super cute and nice. My boyfriend ordered the thai coffee boba and absolutely loved it. It's a lot of coffee and boba for a good price. Very poor customer service. They forgot our order, when my husband went to go check on it (after waiting 15 minutes and watching the works enjoy a pleasant conversation with one another) they questioned my husband and spent 3 minutes looking for his receipt to make sure he wasn't lying. They weren't apologetic about the matter and really handled it poorly. The açaí was also super soupy. Because of the customer service I can't say I'll return to try the gelato. read more

We finally got to open a store in our hometown of Encinitas. After 17 years in the business, we did not want anything more then to serve our own community.

Meet the Business Owner: DAVID A.

David is the owner of Bottega Italiana, which is a privately owned company with several store locations around the west coast US. He moved to Seattle form Italy in 2003, where he learned the trade from the best in his home region of Veneto. My daughter and I are always in pursuit of amazing acai bowls. We actually drove over to Encinitas to try Eve but their hours changed. Lucky for us Gelato 101 is across the street. What a super cute place! We loved the whole vibe. It was a beautiful morning to sit outside and enjoy our bowls. We got the Peanut Butter and the Go Nuts Bowl. Both were excellent. Very generous portions, creamy (not watery) acai base, fresh fruit, delicious granola! Not too sweet, just very refreshing. The bowls are fairly priced at $11 & $12. I have paid more for sub-par acai bowls. I can't wait to bring my husband. I have a feeling this will be our new go to spot. read more
