We had heard this place makes the best gelato in Louisville so we were excited to try it. On first impression I was very skeptical. Most of the tables (and chairs) outside and inside were incredibly dirty and had melted ice cream all over them. I ordered a scoop of the salted caramel which was good and a scoop of the blueberry cheesecake which tasted sour and spoiled. Then I had to use the restroom and the smell was beyond awful, trash on the floor and sink, overflowing trash, no paper towels. The best ever!!!! This gelato is comparable to the actual gelato in Italy, so happy and lucky to have this here in Louisville. Not to mention, one time my husband and i had accidentally came when they were closed, I am pregnant and was overheated and a lil sad to not have gelato, the owner happened to be inside, and saw and came outside to welcome us in and gave us some extra gelato they had from a wedding reception. There was a line out the door, but she was quick and friendly and helped everyone without seeming to succumb to the stress. And Gelato Gilberto rightly had a line out the door! Our friend group walked here after dinner to try a sweet treat on a hot August evening. There apparently was an issue with some of their refrigeration units, but staff were making an attempt to limp along and conduct business as best as possible under those circumstances. We each got a scoop or two of various flavors and happy, happy, happy. The inside cafe dining area was cramped, limited seating, and difficult to navigate to the counter to order. Cute decor. Outdoor seating is offered in the front lawn area, but it was too hot in the full sun even at 7 PM during this visit. One thing I missed terribly from my visits to and working in Rome was gelato. It was the perfect dessert after an excellent meal or a hard day at work. And it was all so good. You can tell that the owners love what they do and their gelato is as good as any I had in Italy. I think their winter sabbaticals there pay off! Gelato Gilberto is a really cute spot to get gelato in the Clifton area. Frankfort Ave has several restaurants and I would love to explore it more. They have some indoor seating, but the outside area is the best part. They have turf and tables and chairs scattered around the lawn. They have so many different flavors of gelato that I was a little overwhelmed at the options! I was glad that they offered samples to help me decide. The person working was friendly and helpful. I tried the goat cheese flavor, which was unique but not what I was feeling. I went with the cookie butter and the cinnamon roll, both of which were delicious! Happened upon this adorable gelato spot on a night I wasn't ready to reach its end and will definitely return! Asked for a couple of samples before buying for our group and the person behind the counter refused to let a couple of people to try a flavor because there wasn't a spoon in the container and the sample that was given of another flavor was so small it didn't even cover a fourth of the small sample spoon.
