I have a sensitive stomach to most ice creams because of the dairy but the ice cream here doesn't bother my belly at all. The servers are always so nice and patient. I will not be back to Graeters for a while. I got a single scoop of ice cream and my scoop didn't even fill the width of the cup and was the tiniest single scoop for $7. He even acknowledged that he gave me not enough ice cream, so was very confused by the whole purchase. Graeter's Ice Cream has quickly become a family favorite for local ice cream shops. We have visited frequently this summer and usually find the line to the hallway. Last night we lucked out and there wasn't a line. Several teenage employees were just waiting to take our order. My son tried the s'mores ice cream, fully knowing he was going to get his tried and true favorite, birthday cake. We also ordered the key lime pie and salted caramel ice cream scoops in a cup. We had three different employees scoop our ice cream, but my husbands scoop was the only one that got shorted. Most of the time our cups are filled to the brim with ice cream, but last night you could see the button of his cup. We didn't complain but he almost asked for more. This isn't the norm though, usually the cups are filled and the ice cream is always delicious. Pricing is about $5.60 for a cup. They have 5-6 tables inside if you want to stay in the a/c, but we usually prefer to sit outside on the stone wall to people watch and eat ice cream. We will definitely be back! read more

With so many ice cream shops along Bardstown Road, the Graeter's in Douglass Loop sometimes gets overlooked. But it shouldn't. Graeter's is -- gasp! -- probably my favorite ice cream. Like many of the other Graeter's, this one includes a larger ice cream counter, where you can buy scoops, shakes, sundaes and more. There is also a seating area, with some additional seats outside. Don't know what to order? Well, allow me to help you. Get the Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip. Do it!!! The chocolate is the signature in this. Several years ago I got to visit a Graeter's plant; and the secret is that they pour in the chocolate when it's melted, and then it hardens as the ice cream is churned -- hence the pieces being all different sizes. I wish the chocolate was also sold in bars. It's primo for sure. The Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip ice cream is also amazing. Plus if you get a single scoop, it's a healthy scoop -- and "healthy" as in not healthy at all. The staff has always been polite and helpful here. And different from other ice cream shops is the fact that you won't see tubs of open ice cream behind the counter. All of the flavors are listed on the wall behind the counter. The seating area has been a little messy in the past, but I think that's just due to going when it's a rush of people and the staff not getting over to clean it up as quickly as they'd like. I have definitely become an ice cream connoisseur and am quite particular and this is simply the best ice cream I've had. There's nothing I can quibble about. They have a huge variety of flavors, all of which are delicious. The amount of milkfat in their ice creams is high, and that's a very good thing when it comes to texture. Their ice creams are not overly sweet, but have great flavor. The ingredients are simple, the way they should be, not filled with a bunch of crap. The shops are very nice inside, with an upscale yet classic feel to them. The employees are usually on top of it and know their stuff. There's a lot more than ice cream in these shops, but I've never tried anything else like the cakes, donuts, or coffee. Anyway, just go wild with samples and then get a double scoop of your two favorites and you can't go wrong. read more

One of two of our favorite ice cream places Graeter's in the Douglas Loop area has some really good ice cream. Service is always good and the one scoop in a cup is plenty for my wife and I. It is very rich and creamy so unless you have a huge sweet tooth I would recommend a small portion. Of course since it's located next to one of our favorite restaurants, Havana Rumba, we sometimes stop by for an ice cream after a meal. The one downside is parking can be iffy especially before 6 pm Monday through Saturday when the parking meters are hard to come by. read more

Being from out of town, I couldn't keep myself from exploring all of the great finds of Louisville. I'd heard about Graeter's, but until you experience it , you don't know. I walked in and was greeted by my friendly dealer...err, server. I said " I'll have what he's having, not realizing that cone had about a 1/2 galloon of the worlds best ice cream loaded onto it. As I strained my arm to old the beast, I realized that I was going to have to lick this thing like a dog to a water bowl. Then, it hit me: inside this raspberry delight was a chunk of equally wonderful chocolate that sent me into a sugar coma. I remember bits and pieces after that, as I stumbled out to my vehicle and continued licking away, looking like a cross between a dog and Linda Blair from the Exorcist. A voice not my own was telling passersby that they need to get their fix, it was otherworldly. As I ran out of the ice cream, I started having withdrawal pangs and delirium tremors. I was a little disappointed during my last visit here. My colleague and I were planning on doing an ice cream social for one of our clients and decided to get our ice cream from here. To our disappointment, they were out of a couple flavors that we were looking for. Also, aren't ice cream stores supposed to appeal to your senses and make you want to try all the ice cream in sight? Well the problem here is that no ice cream was in sight. They are all in covered up little containers, so for someone like me who is not too familiar with the flavors, I struggled with which one I wanted to get. When I looked at the wall to see if there was some type of menu, there really wasn't much of a list so I had to grab a paper menu sitting on the counter and choose from that! Too much unnecessary hassle for a friggin ice cream cone if you ask me. The ice cream I finally ended up trying was the bourbon flavored one. You can really taste the bourbon and wonder if you can get drunk from ice cream? Not the taste that I was looking for. I'll probably never come to this location again. Also try the seasonal flavors because they change it up and sometimes I wish they were be permanent flavors on the list. Be warned: the sizing of the scoops is very generous. I love ice cream, but oh man, even a small can be an overload for 1 person. Best be ready to have a separate space in your stomach for just Graeter's ice cream.
