To die for gelato!! Really! Anywhere else, and there would be a line out the door. I had the brownie cookies that sandwiched the cafe latte gelato. Super yummy. Paired with a lovely (read: strong) cup of black coffee, and it all became a sublime melange in my mouth. They would have gotten 5 stars if there were outside seating, but that's not currently feasible on a just-opening economy. The employees are super welcoming and accommodating. Anywhere else and you'd spend a small fortune or wait 45 minutes for this experience. Enjoy! read more

How am I just now hearing about this spot?! Gelato and I have a long history. When I graduated college, some 76 years ago, we went to Europe. One of countries we visited was Italy. There was a heatwave, it was in the 90's (both temp AND HUMIDITY) for days on end. There was no rest from the beatings. There was no refuge. None, except: Gelato. I was on a Gelato diet. (should write a fad diet book...) What is Gelato? I don't know, and you don't either! Ask 10 people what the difference between Gelato and "ice cream" is, and you'll get 10 different answers. Fat content, air content, egg yolks, etc. You'll hear one has more of one of those than the other, you'll hear one has less than the other, you'll here "______ should NEVER have _____ in it!" It doesn't matter. Just think of Gelato as "Italian Icecream" (not to be confused with "Italian Ice" which is amazing only if you're 4 years old). The main thing that makes it different are the flavors (they are very into nuts-as-flavoring!). In my personal opinion, Gelato has a bit "smoother" of a consistency/texture. It sits somewhere between classic ice cream shop ice cream on one side, and softserve mega-smooth (but the machine is always freaking broke) dairy treat on the other side. Anyway, the Gelato here wasn't as good as what I had in Rome (groan, sorry to sound like a DB), but it was still pretty damn good! They've got classic Italian flavors like hazelnut (filberts for y'all Oregonians) and pistachio. I tried many flavors and ended up going hazelnut. You can definitely tell real nuts are used, no fake over-the-top nutty flavor! The woman working here (Mary Anne) was very friendly and patient with us. Semi authentic Italian gelato in Anchorage. It's unlike other ice cream shops in the area. They pay homage to Italian gelato while still putting their own twist on things. They offer a variety of classic flavors, but also some more eclectic ones. Their sorbet is also pretty good though I only had a small sample! Service was super friendly, and very helpful. They were patient as I tried to select what flavor I wanted. The shop also looks to be expanding into pastries and sandwiches as well. The portion sizes were good for the price, and the ice cream was very tasty. I definitely welcome this addition to the Anchorage area! We went to Gelatte on their opening day, so we weren't sure what to expect... the store didnt really look like it was ready to open yet (seating, the lights weren't even on, the buckets of gelato weren't even labeled with flavors yet). My honey got the pineapple and I got a mix of passion fruit and something else, I can't even remember. It was good, but WAY over priced compared Wild Scoops around the corner for what you get, especially when you consider that gelato is mostly water and icecream is more milk and cream. Was hoping for some great gelato and it was pretty good. So first, stay away from any of their fruit flavors. The orange and watermelon both taste pretty watered down. Was totally disappointed they didn't have pistachio. Seriously love pistachio gelato, it was always the best at the little Italian places in Germany. We decided to try hazelnut, mocha, tiramisu and chocolate. All of these flavors were rich. I will say this is sweeter than the gelato you'll find in Europe, but what isn't in the states? Still it was very creamy and definitely good. Would we go back? Probably not. It's pretty good stuff but there are better ice cream places around here. This stuff is so sweet you might as well get some ice cream anyways. Summary- $3 for a kids scoop, $4.50 for a small...the staff is friendly and the gelato is good, albeit a little too sweet. This place has really delicious gelato. My favorite is their strawberry and lemon gelato. They change their flavors quite frequently, and always have something original. It's conveniently located near the PAC center and near the mall. It's also a few feet away from Steamdot and Kaladi's cafes. It's pretty accessible and not that long of a walk if you've parked in either parking garage. I'll be back in the summer time to explore more of their flavors. read more

Cute! Definitely what downtown needs. Parking is really on accessible by street parking, but the JC Penney garage is just past it on the adjacent block which offers free parking up to an hour. Inside is very sleek and modern, but don't let that scare you off to a (perhaps) foreign concept. Gelato is a wonderful ice cream alternative! This place offers some great simple flavors while offering a few tailored toward the more adventurous palette. They also sell fancy coffees and small "coffee/bake" shop items like prepared sandwiches and the like. The staff are generous enough to offer ample sample tastes especially since this is such a new addition to downtown Anchorage. They're knowledgeable about their products, respectful and polite. They also offer a great rewards program through Clover. We tried the Ube (purple yam) and Chocolate which were lovely together! We ended up combining Sweet Cream with Salmonberry and Caramel with Hazelnut, both mediums which was the perfect size. We'll definitely be back to try more flavors! read more

Gelatte is a new business in downtown Anchorage right near Pangea. The store makes its own Gelato and seems to want to have a set up to serve coffee and gelato. I think it's doing a soft opening. The staff were friendly and excited but none of the flavors were labeled and it was disappointing that they were not displayed beautifully; as gelato should be. There are dairy and gluten free options available from fresh fruits that were pretty tasty but I think there was something missing. I will go back in a few months to give it another try after more practice and the shop has had sometime to put itself together fully. Right now I'm not sold. read more

This is a really good gelato place given that we are in Anchorage. The space is clean and well maintained. It is also well lit which will definitely come in handy during winter. Now for their products the main attraction are of course the gelato! There are 18 flavors available during my visit, I choose pistachio after sampling several flavors. They clearly do not use artificial coloring in their gelatos which is a sigh of relief. Be prepared to see how well packed your gelato is in the cup! They do not scoop it like traditional ice cream. They pack it all in flat! There are also an option for sugar waffle cone instead of cup. Purchased an Affogato, tiramisu flavor with a shot of expresso. The gelato was smooth and creamy as expected, and was already tasteful by itself. The expresso mixed in made it incredible. This is such a gem and just what downtown Anchorage needed. A sleek, clean, and inviting gelato shop. No more having to go to Seward or Homer! Pleasantly surprised to find out they also offer a full espresso menu as well as pastries. All the flavors are rich and smooth. They also had 6 vegan options, which is great since I'm lactose intolerant. You can put more than one flavor in a cup and they're reasonably priced. I should have been suspicious of the complete lack of decor or signage. This place appears to be just trying to make a few dollars off the tourists while it can. Absolutely the most bare minimum investment. This can not possibly be real gelato. The chalky texture and rancid nut flavor screams powdered mix! Also, the sizes are very deceiving. I am no gelato aficionado, but this place blew me away. Even to a knuckle dragger like myself this stuff was OBVIOUSLY freshly made, and OBVIOUSLY a superior product. This place is amazing! Pretty sure it's the first Gelato shop in Anchorage. A much needed and welcomed addition to our little town. All of their Gelato and Sorbetto flavors were delicious! I got to try free samples of all their flavors which was pretty cool I thought. My husband and I tried a combo of Chocolate/Almond and Tiramisu/Pistachio and we did not regret our choices at all. The owners were sweet and very knowledgeable on their products. The employees were very friendly and greeted us with smiles as soon as we walked in-the service was immediate and very welcoming. Oh and don't forget to get a cup of coffee! They serve Cafe D'arte coffee and the gal that made my coffee (Lani) made it just right. It was a perfect spot for our date!
