I cannot recommend Gelson's enough! I go when I want high quality and to treat myself. Every time I visit, the store is immaculately clean, there is plenty of parking, and I have never once had to wait in a long checkout line. The meat counter, pre-packaged sections, and deli offer by far the best selections in the area. The deli is where I visit most frequently, and it is truly a standout department. One of the associates there--I believe her name is Gloria--is by far the friendliest and most caring worker I have ever encountered. She makes an effort to remember your name and treats every interaction with genuine care. When she is busy working on an order, she will politely tell others, "I am helping my customer." That level of pride and personal ownership is incredibly rare these days, and she deserves highest praise. Interesting fact, the first Gelson's opened in July 1951 by Bernard and Eugene Gelson. Funny thing, this was my first time visiting Gelson's. I'd say it's more of a bougie grocery store. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the delicious smell of baked goods the permeated the air. The second thing I noticed was how pristine everything seemed to be. The displays were all lovely. For the most part, you'll find the same items that you see at chain supermarkets, except the prices here are a bit higher but not as outrageous as Erewhon. I ended up paying $3 for a grapefruit. Ouch! Renaud's Bakery is on site, and you can get freshly baked Wolfgang Puck Pizzas. There is also a deli counter, butcher, & fresh seafood too. Everything at this store is either expired or sold out. I go frequently because it's close but end up regretting not driving a bit further to go somewhere else. They will be sold out of the most simple things: organic tomato's, burger sauce, lean ground beef, cottage cheese.. if you see somethings are constantly sold out maybe do something about it. This Gelson's used to be my favorite market. Employees were very helpful and friendly and It was an enjoyable shopping experience overall. Now it seems the (latest) employees don't care. I don't mind bagging my own groceries, but considering the prices they charge, I would imagine that they would be a little more helpful. The cashier (Sabino?) basically dismissed me and greeted the next customer with a smile and friendly attitude. Nonetheless, the manager has always been nice and the bakery is good so the stars are for the service. read more

Walked in today to grab a couple items and to buy a couple lbs of poke. Once I finished packing my poke, I noticed a fly flying around the poke bar. It honestly made me feel disgusted and I just prayed that a fly didn't land and lay an egg on my poke. Just a suggestion. PLEASE put a cover/lid on the poke or better yet, put it behind the bar and have it served by an employee. It's really not sanitary to just have raw fish in the open like that. P.S. I love shopping at Gelson's. They always have what I need, even the most random products which are hard to find elsewhere. The meat and chicken may seem pricey, but there is a noticeable difference in the quality. It's the only place where I can find boneless chicken breasts with skin on. Some of the produce is also expensive, but taken as a whole, the shopping experience is stellar, the service great, the store is clean and there is a great bakery, hot food bar and deli. I had to threw out about half of this large pizza. It was unevenly cooked, unevenly sliced and 1/3 of the bottom was burnt to an inedible degree. And the rest of the normal looking slices could not hold their shape when you tried to pick them up - soggy towards the tip end of the slice. I trusted the Gelson's brand and I would think they would want to protect the Wolfgang Puck brand so I didn't even bother checking or doubting when they told me one of the slices was damaged and so they offered me a free slice. I only understood why it might have been damaged when slicing when I got home - poorly cooked with ingredients unevenly and carelessly distributed. And the two staff members were talking into my pizza without masks when they were talking about the damaged slice. I did not listen to my instinct. That was my fault. It is unfortunate though. Gelson's has a nice variety of prepared foods compared to tiger grocery stores. Lots of their prepared foods are vegan friendly and very fresh . They also have Wolfgang puck pizzas delish! Their cheese selection is huge and parking lot is ample. I usually order via Instacart since I don't leave the house much these days, but the times I have come in person everything is nicely stocked and very clean. Husky recommend! Gelson's is a top qualify supermarket. High quality foods and expect expensive prices if you want the best. Staff is very well trained and accommodating within reason. Parking is available on its premises. It's deli foods are fresh and high quality. I may not like their prices but the quality of their product overrides what I like or don't like. I know they have an employee that regularly checks the temperatures of foods under refrigeration. read more

I'm a black woman and I have been coming to this location for many years. Every time I get fresh food from the Deli the employees allways ignore me for a white person. And when I tell a manager it doesn't seem as if they care, because the same thing keeps on happening to me. This is unacceptable and not fair or nice. My money spends the same. I've given up on this Gelsons. I purchased a few canned drinks the other day only to realize they were all expired after taking a sip. Not just expired but over a month expired. How does that happen?! A little while ago, I purchased a raspberry pastry for my aunt and we plated it as soon as we got home. An EARWIG BUG CRAWLED OUT OF THE PASTRY! I can't make this stuff up... we will always remember this and laugh about the infamous earwig pastry at Gelsons but just... no! Lastly, thanks to a cashier the other day, we were spared a moldy quiche. The cashier noticed and said we shouldn't buy it. We appreciate you for noticing, hence the 2 stars. Gelsons has good people working there. Nevertheless, these are first world problems so I'm not too concerned. Although I wish to never find an earwig in my pastry again. Wow! The service here is incredible! I walked in around 10:40am and grabbed a latte up front and they young man was incredibly polite and so kind. I was in aww... then I walked to the back and a gentleman in all white came out from behind the counter at the poke area and explained every type of Poke they had and how delicious each one was. Just the kindest man for no reason other than I was standing there looking at the poke. I grabbed an entire tub because he made it sound delicious! Then, I had an easy checkout experience. Really, just such happy and polite employees. All wished me a good day and smiled sincerely. This is just unheard now, customer service everywhere else has lacked in the last 5 years and I'm just in aww of the service at the market of all places. I love Gelsons!! It's a bit pricier than other grocery stores, but it's worth it. Here's why: The produce is outstanding. It's clear that they value quality and taste above all else. And the occasional samples have helped me explore new types of fruits and veggies. The meats are high quality. It's easy to come by plenty of organic, great looking meats - even during a pandemic. No time or energy to cook? The deli offerings are terrific. The kale salad is great, the spicy Thai noodles are delicious, the caprese pasta salad is so good. I haven't had a loser in the bunch! Checked out with my overpriced food then went to the deli counter. No numbers left in the "take a number" machine. Caught eye contact multiple times with two of the workers, smiled and say hi, but they just continued chatting with each other. After about 5 minutes another guy stepped up. We both waited patiently a few more minutes staring at them till they finally stepped over to us. They helped him without even glancing at me. He gave them his order knowing I was first. I'd forgotten how obnoxious and un-neighborly La Canada residents were but I was surprised the staff was so inept at this Gelsons deli counter. I shook my head and mentioned I was first. No apologies just had another worker in a rude dismissive tone say she could help me. Talked to the manager and she started making excuses- "Did you already have your bag? Maybe they thought you were leaving". Um, I stood there staring at them and saying hello for what had to be at least five minutes... She said she'd talk to them but didn't seem bothered. read more

The service is always good. The bagger boy had the best outgoing manners. The cashier girl bright and fast. Prices are a bit on high priced side compared to your other chain grocers, so if you're shopping at Gelsons keep that in mind. I've been ordering groceries from Instacart since the beginning of the pandemic. I live in Sierra Madre and typically order from Whole Foods or Sprouts; however, their produce has gone downhill (especially Whole Foods in Hastings Ranch) and they're often out of several products we've ordered. Recently, I switched to Gelson's. So far, so good! The produce has been consistently excellent and, although they don't have everything organic (Gelson's, if you're reading this, consider organic russet potatoes and red bell peppers!), they have enough. And after placing several Instacart orders, they have only been out of one item. I haven't physically been to the store but am pleased with the products we've received, especially the produce. They seem to care more about quality than other local grocery stores, which I truly appreciate! read more

This Gelson's is an older location but the service here is excellent. As Gelson's expands, they may loose that top notch at service that this location provides. The location is older, but is clean, well stocked and the staff is friendly. I do feel that somebody the Gelson's are not inviting. This location is. 11/23/2016 Came here to purchase last minute Thanksgiving food. Thank goodness for my coupon for $5 off of $25! Even though it's more expensive here than Ralph's, I LOVE their deli section. They seem to have different kinds of salads monthly. Depending on who's working, the people behind the counter are efficient. I hate it though when they talk to much to each other instead of serving the customer. I rarely see it happen, but for me, twice is more than enough. I love how they renovated this former Von's. Because they aren't that busy, usually there's only 1 or 2 lines open. When it gets busy though, they are very good about opening up another line. Clean seating area inside and out. read more

This is by far the best Gelson's supermarket of all the other locations. The seafood section is superior to Wholefoods, and the sushi section offers sushi style brown rice. So if you're in the mood for poke, just mozy on over to the seafood section and get a half pound of the Hawaiian tuna poke, and then go to the sushi section and get a bowl of sushi style brown rice and you're golden. For those who don't know what sushi style brown rice is well let me tell you, sushi rice is basically vinegared rice (rice wine vinegar to be exact). I heard that Gelson's is a "high end" supermarket w/ prices to match so I made a strategy of buying only things from Gelson's which are not common in other chain supermarkets but are of superior quality & worth the premium price. For example: 1) I buy their organic lettuce, broccoli, & other vegetables that have a high surface area which may otherwise absorb insecticides & herbicides. Perhaps no amount of soaking in water will get rid of all the pollutants in non-organic produce so I feel that buying more expensive organic produce is worthwhile. It may be my imagination, but I find the green lettuce at Gelson's tastes better, & fresher w/ a slightly wilder, green bitterness. However, I do not buy organic vegetables & fruits where I can peel the skin which gets rid of most of the insecticides. Hopefully, farmers are not using systemic poisons to kill insects in produce & fruits since the roots or leaves would pick up the poison & spread it throughout the plant including what we will eat. Such are the dark days of mega corporate owned agriculture that we live in. 2) The meats here are not injected w/ growth hormones nor antibiotics. They do cost more, but I would rather pay more for wholesome meat than animals injected w/ hormones or antibiotics that will sicken me in the long term. I find the beef here to be particularly flavourful w/ a beefy meaty flavour, & tenderness. Yes, eating too much red meat almost everyday may cause colorectal cancer, but an occasional indulgence should not be too deleterious especially when eaten w/ a lot of colorful vegetables w/ plenty of antioxidants. Also the expensive meats here may lessen our consumption of meat so that we become healthier. 3) Certain specialty items not found in other major chain supermarkets are stocked at Gelson's such as Olio di Tartufo Nero e Bianco/Black & White Truffle flavoured oil; high premium European & American cheeses; Truffe de Bourgogne/summer or Burgundy Truffles; high end salts such as Sel de Fleur de Guerande or de Camargue; Rotisserie Half Duck Partially Boned by Maple Leaf Farms; McConnell's Fine Ice Cream, etc. Fortunately in my local Glendale Newspress every Thursday that is good until Sunday, there is a coupon for $10 off a purchase of $50 which is theoretically 20% off. The staff generally is helpful & friendly. The manager w/ the moustache was especially helpful & kind on my first visit to Gelson's La Canada in August. 4+ Yelp stars for a grocery store that dares to stock truly superior items in taste, quality, purity, & specialization. read more
