We are visiting the Rancho Mirage area and have experience patronizing a Gelson's in Del Mar, so we were not surprised by the abundant selection of....everything! Produce, canned and dry goods, and some options not available in other stores, like gluten free, organic, vegan, etc. A great many grab and go as well, from a large salad bar to deserts and sandwiches,even a carving station for hot off the bone turkey Sandos. Parking is sufficient, staff is courteous and helpful, and the atmosphere is sort of a Wonderland. The only reason I give them a four-star rating concerns the prices. Not just a little more than their competitors, a lot more, from 25% to double, in the case of the rotisserie chickens. So, my recommendation is to stop in but to be selective in your choices. read more

Wandering through the food fantasy world that is Gelsons we enjoyed the ambience of abundance. It wasn't too crowded on a mild October day and we ordered sandwiches to go and also explored the fruit aisle where I got fresh berries. I also walked by the bakery section and admired their seasonal cake display, as well as the baked treats that are on offer year-round. The peach topped muffins looked particularly tempting. I still couldn't find any sugar-free soda or sugar-free drinks. But I will return to Marvel at the endless aisles of tempting treats. read more

I really like their salad bar. Everything is fresh and there is a lot to choose from. They also have a superb deli counter for sandwiches and entrees. The rest of the store is clean, well lit and has a big selection of keto, organic and vegan products. Staff are friendly and helpful. All in all it's a pleasant place to go grocery shopping or just for a quick lunch to go. Free parking in the lot out front. Also there is a lot of EV charging available. Highly recommend. read more

I called to let the deli know, I bought a organic rotisserie chicken and it was still raw. But the manager was busy on her break to take my call. The attendant who answered my call spoke over me, while I was trying to explain to her about the raw chicken. Before I finished my sentence she said to me was "well if you wanna refund you're gonna have to wait until she off her break". Rude! I don't need a refund! I picked up this dinner for the Jewish holidays again. This holiday is Rosh Hashanah. It was just as good as the Passover dinner I picked up before . It was easy to pick it up this time but last time it was a bit of a struggle. Everything was delicious for $95. It's enough to feed eight even though they say it is for four . You need to make extra matzo balls if serving more than four. I'm very impressed with the job that Gelsons does. I will definitely order it again for the next Jewish holiday. read more

I am very disappointed with Gelson Meat/Seafood counter. In the past three times I have gone to their counter I am continually pointed to the pre-packaged meats. For these prices I don't want prepackaged meats. Today was, for me, the last time. I wanted two salmon cuts and again I was pointed to the pre-packaged meats. This never happens at Bristol Farms. I don't think they even have a prepackaged area. For fresh cuts of meat or seafood I will drive the extra mile to Bristol Farms. read more

This year for Halloween they have great selection of decorations...I wished they had much bigger portion of store for their decoration! As someone who has shopped at high end groceries for decades, let me say Gelson's is pathetic. Everything is over priced and if anything is listed at a sale price, the full price is what you'll be charged. All the deli and bakery items looked extremely tired. I'll happily not return. read more

If you love Gelson's, then you are in store for a real treat! This Gelson's is HUGE, has an amazing selection of whatever you are looking for, and the staff provides top notch service. There is a notable selection of lovely olive oil and balsamic vinegar available for tasting at this location. We are frequent visitors to the desert and love shopping here because we don't have the store back home. Always a treat to grab deli items, breakfast fixings and gift items. The hot turkey sandwich in the Carvers section sounded amazing because I could see the actual turkey and not some pre-fab deli meat. I took a number, got called and told the lady what I wanted. She asks what kind of bread do I want so I got sourdough. The sandwich was going to come with turkey breast, cheese, gravy, stuffing, and cranberry sauce. As she is walking back-and-forth between pulling out two slices of bread and one slice of cheese and then walking over to the turkey, she comes back and starts assembling the sandwich. I said if any turkey skin happens to fall off, I'd like a piece. She didn't really "get it" and says we don't put skin in the sandwiches. I looked closer at the flyer, and it said it was supposed to be on a brioche roll, which would have been a better choice than a slice of sourdough. I asked about it and the lady said they didn't have brioche rolls, period. Once she puts this sandwich together she walks back over and puts it in the oven or some thing and then returns to try and put it in the plastic box. By the time I got home five minutes away, it was kind of a gooey smashed mess. Flavors were good but it seemed kind of a production to get the job done and it doesn't look very appetizing. read more

This review is mostly about the bakery and their fabulous team. We had a baby shower and ordered our cake here. The pricing was great compared to some other places (Jensens wanted $118 for the same cake ) I talked with the decorator and printed out a few photos, she was so creative and helped pick out our flavors. We went with a white vanilla cake with fresh strawberries and strawberry jam, great choice The cake was so cute and everyone loved it. We will no longer shop at Gelsen's!! After many years of shopping there I'm appalled that we were given four vouchers from them that we are not able to use. I was very happy that they provided us with these vouchers because we spent over $400 in gift cards at their store...the promotion was $10 vouchers for ever $100 purchase of gift cards. We didn't notice till we went home that the vouchers were going to expire in two days time. I figured it was A mistake on their part and we should have gotten vouchers that expired in a months time, at at the very least 2 weeks time. When we went back 5 days later they would not allow us to use them, we were only able to use one, AND they took the remaining 3 from us so that we could not try to use them. I've been shopping at Gelsen's stores for over 20 years...they just lost my business. read more

I choose to shop for specialty items from time to time even as I know we are paying steeper prices than other markets. Still, the superior quality is worth conceding to the price points. Gelson's continues to be a great place to browse and shop. The deli is a highlight of the experience and enhanced by a couple of familiar faces assisting me. Call it fate, even with taking a number, Tim has assisted me numerous times. Always pleasant, makes the effort and takes the time to ensure that my orders are prepared to my request. Couple that with a great personality and it becomes a terrific experience. As expected, I have seen "difficult, self-entitled guests" and Tim keeps the demeaner professional. Yes, I am fantasizing about all of these things but don't we all when we are envisioning what a perfect grocery store would look like? I never really thought about grocery stores until I moved to the Coachella Valley area. They were just a routine part of life. But now that every type of grocery store known to man plus farmer's markets exist around every corner in this area... I can now do massive research on this topic. Time on my hands..? Maybe ;- It's remarkable, to me, that a customer, little ol' me, can enter a grocery store and get swept up into the beauty of the way the aisles are stocked, the way the vegetables are stacked, the varieties of soups, herbs, condiments, pastas, yogurts, milks... Just standing in the aisle, staring at the shelves... what can seem like hours... trying to absorb all the variations, ingredients, exotics and non-exotics It is truly a learning experience and for someone who read the ingredients on EVERY package of food before buying it can be quite the process to vet what is good or not good for you before placing in the cart .. The OTHER customers that are also taking their time reading labels and just moving a nice slow pace will actually look UP... from reading the labels to acknowledge that you are there and maybe even smile... which is a rare activity and one that is thoroughly enjoyed between two people. I don't remember what kind of music is playing at Gelson's when I am there but for me it is classical music, symphony, opera (when I find something extremely special to buy) and then beautiful symphony again that plays in my mind while I'm shopping. Even the employees at Gelson's are SO nice and they will really try to help you and they will SMILE at you which is also a rarity in this world. Poor location compared to other Gelson's I've been to. Maybe I went at the wrong time, but items were fairly sparse for late afternoon/early evening. Normally we love the panko breaded chicken tenders from the hot food bar, but we ordered a bunch from here and they were way more dry than I remember. Also, the mac n cheese from the hot food bar was old and not fresh. One version was bright orange and didn't look appealing at all, whereas the 12 cheese one we ended up buying was dry and all the cheeses had hardened. Overall, would only come here out of convenience, but there are other grocery stores nearby that might be better. read more

What the heck happened?? Have been buying fresh Diestel Thanksgiving Turkeys from Gelson for a few years now, but decided on Gelson's own label this year mainly due to the smallest size of Diestel vs Gelson's. Picked up the turkey on the Wed morning, only to get home and find ice inside the cavity and on the underside. Had to double check their ad/website to make sure that the Gelson branded turkeys I ordered were not sold as frozen or previously frozen. Not much I could do at that point. Used cold water to get the innards to thaw/loosen, left it submerged to fully thaw. The worst of it was the turkey, once cooked, was tough (ie: old). What a waste of time and money....never again Gelson's. PS. I wrote to Gelson's in hopes of getting some explanation before I posted this review, to give them a chance to change my mind about warning others. No response whatsoever. I received a promo email from Gelson's on Dec 26,2023. In the promo, it had a discount code (Gelsons$20) for online orders of $20 off $50 in online purchases for pickup. It clearly stated that the code could be used three times. It shows no expiration period. On the 27th, I ordered, used the code and received the discount and picked up my items. Today I went to order, input the correct code and was shown that the code was invalid as it had been used by me. Yes, once, not three times. The manager has called to relay that there was a tech issue with their Instacart partner. Unfortunate but happy that I brought to their attention. The issue has been fixed. read more

I thought I had submitted a review recently but realized today after another visit and once again interacting with Ken that I had not submitted my note about him. On April 12 about 4pm I went to the store to pick up a pre ordered dinner only to find out no one could find my order. At that point I met Ken and he provided me with outstanding service in a very calming way. He quickly got others together and put together my order as I was about to panic thinking I would not have the dinner I ordered with guests coming for dinner at 6pm. Ken knows how to look after customers with his focus, determination and professionalism that you rarely see these days. I meant to provide this submission right after my experience but unfortunately forgot. Today I was back waiting at the prepared food counter again and while waiting as 2 or 3 people behind the counter walked by and said nothing out of no where Ken came over to ask how he could help. I asked him if he remembered me and reminded him about his help the last time. He remembered after I reminded him and looked after me just as well as the last time. Terrible selection of premade salads that were not fresh one or two days old. Horrible produce lettuce was brown wilted and ridiculously expensive twice the cost of anywhere else. $45 a pound steak not even prime just ridiculous premade meat products such as burger patties, skewers again a day to two days old and prices just really unimaginable. I've never been so disappointed as the Gelson's where I live in San Diego is top-notch. This store needs to be closed . They have an excellent produce & quality meat departments, a large selection of cheeses & deli meats for one's charcuterie boards, and first-class offerings of appealing pastries & baked goods. This location also offers a self-serve seafood bar, olive bar, salad bar, and a large offering of ready to-go items in their full service deli department. There is a good selection of beer, wine & other adult beverages. Gelson's offers of premium products & selections, and convenience, come at a higher price point. read more

I just spent 10 minutes waiting in line behind some dithering old woman using some kind of coupons or gift cards at the checkout. She didn't seem to have a lot of items to purchase, but she kept digging in her purse for more and more of these gift cards while I stood there fuming, and the lines on either side of me we're just going on through. I'm shocked at the level of discourtesy, not only of that woman, but also of the checker, who allowed this to happen. She should've told her to come back another time and use the rest that she had at the bottom of her purse. It was ridiculous. . I usually shop at the store quite a bit and that's never happened to me before. But it was aggravating enough to make me consider just going back to VONS. read more

This is a review of the Wolfgang puck eatery located inside the market. There are two separate stalls - one serving sushi, poke, and other contemporaries, and the other, a full size pizza oven- centered pizzeria, dishing out some fantastic pies. I paid a lot of money the past weekend at a horrible, teppanyaki in this area of palm springs; so, to find such a good eatery at fraction of the cost was a welcomed relief. The pizza (when ordered in person) takes about 20 minutes to bake so make sure to put in the order before shopping, and it'll be ready for you when you're done. My favorite market in the Coachella Valley! Great produce, high quality beef and salmon, excellent sandwich's. Thrilled to be able to buy pumpernickel bread and spumoni ice cream. However, today I bought Simple Kneads, an organic pumpernickel gluten free bread. When I opened the package, the bread fell apart, crumbs all over the kitchen. I looked for an expiration date, but just saw "sell by February 5 which is tomorrow. In all the years since Gelson's took over Von's Pavilion's, I have never had a problem. I also felt the clerk was a bit rude. I mentioned my husband and love to shop on Tuesdays, as we save 20%. She corrected and said 10%. I reminded her that residents of Rancho Mirage get an additional 10%. I had mentioned losing the Gelson's in Malibu, and she immediately corrected me saying it was the Palos Verdes store. She has never waited on us, thank, God, as she seemed to be confrontational. My husband, thought maybe she had seniority and was transferred here. Anyways, in the dozens of times we have shipped here in RM, there has never been a problem! Highly honored California retired School Administrator. Except for this incident, I could shop here every day and leave happy! I will certainly avoid her next time. read more

BIG TIP - when you are handling meat or fish you should wear gloves AND wash your hands. Shame on you Gelsons - you need to train your staff better. While I appreciate the clerk, who was previously stocking shelves, trying to pitch in and help get me my ahi tuna out of the fish counter, I was completely disgusted that she didn't first wash her hands or put on gloves.
