An antique dealer locally advised me to try Gilt when I asked her about a brooch I have for sale. So I took it, and several other pieces, to the little house on NW 23rd. What professionalism. Jesse, I think was her name, was a fount of knowledge about my pieces. She knew the stones, the quality of the gold, the amount I might expect if sold, and all this for FREE and even before I asked. She just whipped out her tools and got the facts for me within five minutes. Now, I'm armed with knowledge that will make my sale much better, but as well I could not resist the gorgeous antiques on display. There was a pair of old 1960s bell earrings, and I was able to put them on layaway! They require 1/3 down, with weeks to pay, and I so look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with this beautiful little store. There was a couple in there getting diamonds and people just staring in awe. You MUST go here. My purchase was under $100 - so don't think you need an arm and a leg! Bought my engagement ring here, as well as the earrings for the wedding. Great selection of unique everything in a wide price range. I'm still thrilled with the uniqueness of my vintage ring and that I didn't have to shell out thousands for something that is still everything I hoped for in a ring. Bonus: a year after buying the ring, I found that there was a teeny, tiny etched date on the inside of the band, from 1922. Gave me shivers. You can't buy that from Fred Meyers. This is the kind of amazing little place that I love and hate ;) I'm a sucker for neat/old/unique shiny things, and dragged my friend into this store when I saw it. I liked a few rings but they were all too expensive. (not by nature, but I didn't want to spend the money) Well, I lingered just long enough for one of the ladies to approach me with a couple of gorgeous ones I hadn't noticed... One was destined to be mine. Vintage 1950s ring with a huge, beautifully cut smokey quartz in a delicate but sturdy 14k setting. I fell in love right away and pulled out my credit card before I could change my mind. (It was only a tad over what I was willing to spend, bonus points for no sales tax in OR!!) I don't regret the purchase for a second - I wear it all the time and am so proud of my fun find! These ladies know good jewelry, and apparently they knew me just by the few words I muttered. They're VERY good sales women - not pressuring at all, but damn good - and very nice and friendly. Don't wander in there if you're the type to fall in love with a piece... you'll probably walk out with it! I'm a big research-before-you-buy person, so when I decided to propose to my boyfriend, I started making a list of antique and vintage jewelers in the Portland area. GSL was one of a handful that we visited - there are plenty of estate jewelers in Portland, but not very many reputable retailers who specialize in antique and vintage, are passionate about curating their collection, are a long-standing retailer, and offer the service you want for a large, once-in-a-lifetime purchase. Of the places that fit those criteria (there were really only 3 or 4), Gem Set Love had far and away the best selection, both in quantity and quality. I had been eyeing a late 1700's Georgian design on their website, which was a bit above our budget but a great example of the depth of character we were looking for. In fact, I looked extensively on EraGem, Brilliant Earth and auction websites to learn about the market, and while they have amazing pieces, I never saw another quite like this particular ring. I thought I might check it out and let the salesperson know that it represented my taste. This was early in the day, and by the end of the day traveling around the city, it was clear that this was my "soulmate" of a ring. It's hard enough to find a genuine c. 1780's diamond ring in good condition outside of a museum, let alone one that you absolutely adore. The extra investment was worth it, no question. Paula (the owner) loves the Georgian era, and it was an awesome treat to hear the passion in her voice as she talked about her work discovering these treasures. After wearing my ring for a week, I ended up getting it resized just a bit, which obviously was included in the price. Everyone there remembered me (probably because they remembered the ring - either way, it was nice), and the service was great. Paula gave us lots of tips to make sure we take the best care possible of my beautiful ring, and if we ever need to get it repaired or are in the market for another piece, we'll be going directly to her, due to her specific knowledge and experience. I'll be keeping my eye on their site for any irresistible pieces to add to my wedding ensemble. :) Basically, I'm so glad GSL exists, and I'm so thrilled to own such a gorgeous piece of history. read more

This is my favorite jewelry shop! Not just in Portland. I live in NYC now and still go to them for all my adornment "needs." All the ladies are extremely knowledgeable and amazing at what they do and the selection is impeccable. My husband has been able to work the GSL team to upgrade my wedding band and get me a gorgeous gold locket to commemorate our daughter's birth all over the phone. The gals there remembered my engagement ring well enough to suggest complimentary bands and they had the locket beautifully engraved with her name and date of birth. I had no idea I wanted a vintage wedding ring until I fell in love with a STUNNING set from the 1930s at Gilt. I was in without my man and felt kinda funny about it, but the ladies were SO kind and fully indulged me in what must have been at least an hour of staring at my hand and gesticulating excitedly as I mimed through fake conversations in the mirror. Not kidding. It was so much fun. My (now) husband had no problem, reaching out and procuring this perfect pair from across the country in New York, where we live. PS it appraised for a heap more than he paid. Fast forward to a couple years later and a tiny diamond fell out of the wedding band. I had to mail it in for repair, and decided to toss in the engagement ring for good measure. Within a week and a half, the rings were returned, all diamonds secure, fully cleaned, re-rounded and more beautiful than I even remembered! Jessie and Carley were extremely kind and super informative. I paid a minimal fee for shipping and am so glad I decided not to get hasty and just use a more conveniently located jeweler. I don't get what all the fuss is about. Fiancé and I went in to look for his wedding band. Given he's never bought a wedding band, we had lots of questions. Apparently having questions is not appreciated by the staffers. God forbid wanting to try on several styles. We were passed around from employee to employee, until a very new one took us on. She was friendly, but didn't know a lot about jewelry. I tried on a few small "vintage" wedding bands with tiny diamonds. The cost was almost as much as my truly vintage 1930s engagement ring with multiple large diamonds. I can see how this place appeals to the quirky Portlander. But definitely not the place for those who like to be treated nicely and can tell the difference between old and vintage. read more

A veritable candy land for the jewelry lover!! This lovely boutique has vintage wares such as engagement rings and costume jewelry that is clearly carefully selected for the store. They also carry new pieces, most by local designers. Carely Johnson creates a line of progessive pieces using beads and clasps from vintage pieaces. It's like taking your favorite pair of grandma's earings and bringing them to the 21st century. Also worth noting are Ann Beebe's earrings using vintage material. Since its in such a great location, Gilt is really easy to pop into and see what's new. You'll often leave with something new, even if it you weren't planning on it. read more

I purchased a 1912 necklace with tiny freshwater pearls for my wedding day. I enjoyed the selection and my experience so much, that I brought my mom on my wedding weekend and she purchased a beautiful vintage bracelet and a gift certificate for me to use on our anniversary. My husband and I got temporary rings for our wedding until we found ones we really wanted. I recently went in to spend it and panicked because it was slightly expired, but the wonderful assistant said it was absolutely no problem and she helped me pick out my new wedding band (1941)! I used to love this shop! And to be honest I still love the items they carry however I had a very negative experience yesterday while shopping for my engagement ring. I don't think it reflects the business as a whole necessarily but the interactions with the employees were very unusual and quite frankly rude. I'm not sure if there was tension between the two women working or if they were both just having a bad day but it was obvious they were not in a professional capacity to do their jobs that day. I waited patiently for assistance and after trying on several items the clerk became impatient with me and stated that she was having back problems and couldn't bend down to retrieve any more items from the case. I kindly asked if she needed to sit down and rest for a min I could wait but she sharply said "No I'd rather my co-worker get to eat something first since it's already 4pm." She was for the most part polite but also quite snobby as if my family including my partner and young daughter were a nuisance to her. While I have sympathy for her pain and conveyed that to the clerk I was looking to potentially purchase my engagement ring that day and was very put off by the lack of customer service so I left without getting to see/try on everything I wanted to. We did end up purchasing a ring that day at another store in that area because their customer service was impeccable, without attitude and welcomed my family with very friendly service. I'm honestly just very disappointed because I was really excited to finally be able to try on rings at a shop I have admired for many years. My soon to be fiancée had purchased a ring from there some years back and had a great experience with the owner so I was shocked at the way we were treated. I hope that this was an isolated event but It's disheartening that employees would behave in this manner especially to a customer who wants to potentially spend a considerable amount of money at their store. I saw an ad for Gilt in The Mercury and that piqued my interest so I decided to investigate further on Yelp. After reading the reviews I could hardly wait to go! We went in twice within a week and a half -- the first time we found a few possibilities but nothing that was "it." Every one of the staff members is knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. My man and I both got our engagement/wedding rings here. His ring (a delicate 1930's white gold band with small diamonds) came to need repairs, and Gilt did those repairs quickly and for FREE. We can also bring our rings in any time for a quick and thorough free cleaning. Since buying our rings we have been back to buy some Spanish/Portuguese silver filigree pieces. I came here to get ready for an office holiday party. It had a 20s/Art Deco theme, and I thought this would be the perfect place. I admit I was a little hesitant at first, given the polar reviews GSL seems to get from reviewers, and although I can only speak for myself I have to say I had an extremely positive experience. I was a bit wary over the higher ticket items--however beautiful they are--and the saleswoman I worked with seemed to understand I didn't have thousands of dollars to spend adorning myself for an office party. She was witty and helpful, and didn't make me feel cheap for being... cheap. Haha. She was extremely well versed on both Art Deco jewelry and Deco-inspired prices, showing me a few items that, although they weren't entirely era-appropriate, she was sure that no one would know the difference. All in all, I have to say I'll be back! I love the vintage oddities and unique pieces. Where else can I find Victorian brooches made of human hair and antique diamonds with personality? I had a TERRIBLE experience here last Saturday. My friend and I only asked to have five pieces pulled from the cases downstairs (the estate jewelry section), each time extra politely. The salesgirl with short blond hair "helping" us could not have been more rude! She acted put out, as if she didn't want our business, never smiling at all. You would've thought we asked her to bend an iron beam with her bare hands, such was her weary and irritated expression at our request to view the merchandise she was supposed to be be selling! Needless to say, we didn't buy anything. This shopping trip was doubly shocking because we had been to the store a few other times---and received friendly and helpful service on those occasions. Normally, I would say this was just a "bad apple" salesgirl, but there were at least three other women behind the counter, and none intervened to salvage the scene that played out a couple of feet away from them! Clearly, not one wanted to provide service commensurate with what a shopper should expect in a jewelry boutique. On top of that, on each of my previous visits I had purchased something (totaling around $1000). A reminder in good business policy (if you won't just do it out of simple human decency): TREAT CUSTOMERS KINDLY! YOU LOST NOT JUST A BROWSER, BUT A BUYER! read more

I didn't know that I wanted my wedding ring to be from Gilt, but I did know that it was not going to come from Fred Meyers (the place I buy potatoes), or Kay's, or Ben Bridge or wherever. I also knew that something like Margulis was violently outside my price range. And I'd heard good things about Gilt, so to Gilt I went. The bottom floor is a little daunting. There's a lot of shiny to catch the attention and it can be difficult to hone in on individual pieces. I spent some time trying on simpler, small wedding bands, choked a bit on the prices, and was about to resign myself to going somewhere else when I spotted THE ring for me. I don't really wear jewelry and I don't like how really flashy things look on me, but this particular ring just seemed to fit, and I loved it. It was a little simple, a little glamorous, and I'd never met anyone who had anything like it. It cost three times what I had planned on spending, but that was just that. I had my ring. Pros: lack of conflict materials, recycled metals, first sizing and cleaning is free, some unique pieces that no one else will have. Cons: The staff was a bit intimidating and could have been more open and helpful. I felt very timid about asking questions to any of the ladies working. When I did ask questions the answers I got were rather perfunctory, which is too bad. I would have liked to have felt more of a connection to the place where I bought my ring. When I do have the budget to jewelry shop for fun, I'll probably go to somewhere I actually feel welcome. read more

She looked down her little nose at me and snarled, "ONLY vintage jewelry from BEFORE 1960, which was clearly before she was born and more than her yearly salary.The selection was vast, but much of it was stuff I see at garage sales with inflated prices. Now that my long term bf has said that we should "check out Gilt sometime", I stepped in to the store ready and willing. Never before purchasing something of this importance, price point and magnitude, I was especially nervous. I want to really LOVE something before I commit to it-this rings true in all aspects of my life, and didnt want to pick something because I liked it at first glance. However, once I walked in, I zeroed in on my likes: 1920s, filigree detailing, somewhat square in shape, and under $1000. Lo and behold, the wonderful sales woman pulled out the first ring and it was THE ONE. She showed me several more, but nothing compared to the ring she showed me first. It was literally fate. After a couple minutes of mulling over the importance of this purchase, we went for it. I cannot stop thinking about it and cannot wait until my boyfriend proposes with this beautiful piece of jewelry that has history and attention to detail. The staff were gracious, not pushy at all, and let me know that I could clean my rings with them at any time in the future at no cost and let me know about insuring it. They have such a beautiful, affordable selection that you will fall in love with. Their inventory constantly changes so if you don't find something now, you most certainly will later.
