On a recent trip to Sequoia my friend Denise and i stayed here. When I booked the place I did so after consulting a few websites but not really diving into them, so I did not know what this place was about. I just knew it was rustic--- on theme for a woods-forward trip- and close to Sequoia. And I assumed it was, at its core, an inn in a town. When Denise and I arrived we discovered that what awaited us was different than what we expected- not in an extreme way, but, in a way that separated where we slept from where we had to shower. These two points were far enough that we would need to walk from our room to another structure. Not a far walk, but still a walk that felt inconvenient because we are city folk, not outhouse people, even if they are modernized. I do not know if I made it clear, Denise and I discovered that what I booked was a cabin with no bathroom and the bathroom was like a 10 to 15 feet walk to a modern outhouse that felt impossible to get to, especially in the black and cold of the night. Denise and I were introduced to our shed turn cabin at around 10::00 p.m. We quickly accepted that we did not have a typical inn room, I had opted for the green cabin. It was a form of glamping. The actual room was snug. She took the bed up that up a ladder, like the one one walks up when they have bunk beds. And I stayed on the bottom bed. The place had a table, hooks, the beds a tv mounted on a corner and not much else. It was a place to sleep, and watch tv while laying down on the bed, it was not much more. So when I call it a cabin, do not imagine a cabin in the woods with a fire, a bear rug, a couch with quilted cushions and a mounted elk on the wall. It literally was what I described before--- mostly a couple of beds with a shed built around it. I showered in the outhouse the next morning. It had two stalls with a toilet and three to four showers, with one out of order. I had stepped into the bathroom of mountain folk and as a vacation experience it slapped, if it were my regular life, I would miss the privacy and comfort of a city bathroom with its sturdy plumbing and opportunity for me to blast my beats as I shower. When I went inside my shower, I saw that the shower was not a shower-head mounted on a wall. Instead it was one of those shower heads that is like a hose. You can pick it up, and shower with it while you scrub yourself with one hand, and hold the shower head with the other. I did not fully understand how to change from old clothes to my new clothes, so I ended up wetting my new clothes. I left them in the corner of the shower, and I believed that the water from the shower hose would not get them, but it did. For those who think that they would have handled the situation better than I did, even thought it was their first time, like it was my first time, I say they are probably right. I tend to be clumsy and miss hooks, and not really think of clothes enough to protect them from hose water that can run wild. In this place, one has to prepare logistically to tackle a shower. When Denise and I woke up the next morning, we were able to see the expansive wood scenery that awaited us. It was precious and majestic and the pay-off of enduring the lack of city comforts. The place also had this patio area with fairies, they were ceramic of course, but maybe at a certain time of day they awake at least for seconds to tend to the woods so they keep green and strong. I sat there. Took pictures of the trees, through a netting roof, and at this moment knew I was in a rustic-wood dream sponsored by dust of fairies, and I was in a state of stiff calm that settled by a nymph's blessing. With the poetic stripped, the place offered me peace because I was surrounded with pronounced nature in the form of tall trees, dirt trails, a blue sky, and I was not in a rush. I could simply enjoy the blue, green and brown all around me, with ticks of the clock ignored. I guess that is the promise of a vacation in the woods fulfilled. There was also a cat that belonged to the place. It was peached colored and clipped in all its glory. I forgot its name. Denise and I took a short walk to the small clearing behind the inn. And the cat decided to nestle besides her. So this place also has another charming quality of a good inn: a permanent guest, of the feline persuasion, that always greets visitors with a purr and a paw. Those kind of touches transformed our wooden cabin in the woods, into a wooden cabin in the woods where we interacted with a four legged creation, not a moose or a bear, but still the spirit of nature's animals was all around us. I just re-saw the picture of the tall trees behind the netting roof and I felt the umph of nature's breeze hitting my inside again. We had a bit of a mixed experience at Genas Sierra Inn and Restaurant on July 4th. We were able to get seated right away on the (dog-friendly!) patio. There was also plenty of seating inside, which had an old-school cabin-like vibe. All four of us ordered the Morro Rock Ribeye Steak, medium rare. Service was generally friendly, but our server was super young and a little nervous. I ordered a glass of red wine and she brought out a white, and they were definitely a bit thrown by my friend's request for an Old Fashioned. They did make a solid one though! The steaks took a while, which was fine since we weren't in a rush. Mine came out great! I liked the Montreal steak spice flavor and general preparation. Unfortunately, I seemed to get the only good steak of the bunch. The other 3 were very overcooked and under-seasoned. Otherwise though, we all enjoyed the veggie and baked potato sides. I had mixed feelings on my rating. I chose this location because it was close to my destination. From the start, booking was simple and I did use a third-party. However, the notifications and instructions and reminders were fantastic! When I called the Inn, I spoke to a live person right away, and they were friendly and helpful. Here is where they get a full star. I arrived pretty late on my first day, however, because of the great instructions, I know exactly where to park. I know exactly how to get into my room. Just a couple of minor things about the room, and I knew this in advance again because of the emails. There are no microwave or refrigerator for your convenience. There is an additional fee to use their community kitchen. The walls are extremely thin, you hear EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING! The bed is a bunkbed. Unfortunately, my bedding was so dirty that they stink like a trash can. Interesting enough, I was watching the men clean up after I left, and they only took the sheets to wash, but not the top bedding and I think that's what smells pretty bad. I'm assuming because the top bedding is too thick to put in their onsite washers. Whatever the case is, it was terrible for two nights. Another part is that if you want to watch the TV, you have to keep the lights on because somehow the electric outlet is connected so that was frustrating. I will say that there were plenty of towels and shower hygiene available. The air conditioning unit and heater came with instructions, but somehow I still was not able to get it to work properly. It was pretty chilly at night. There are also not a lot of outlets available for your use. The room is very small so if you are planning to travel with the family, keep that in mind. I was traveling solo so it worked for me. Would I return? Probably so. It is convenient and it's not terrible, but they could use some improving on the bedding and what not. Another plus, is that they are connected to a restaurant and that was convenient for getting coffee and food. My first trip into the restaurant was pretty poor. I had some customers looking at me sideways. I understand this town is primarily white and they may not come across a lot of Latinas. When I asked for the free drip coffee, the server seemed very irritated. I still left a tip. On my next visit to the restaurant, it was slightly better. I ordered a specialty coffee and a bread to go. The servers seem to be having a difficult morning and the coffee wasn't that great. Didn't test anything like the menu description. The coffee bread was amazing! I didn't get a picture of the room but just know they are very small and again it was conveniently close to where I needed to be. There are a couple of general market stores on that same highway, should you need anything. read more

Stopped here after heading back home from Kings Canyon, grabbed the eggs Benedict with some coffee for breakfast and it was great! They have indoor seating with A/C or outdoor seating with a koi pond in the back, it's the perfect stop with plenty of parking and the food came out quick. read more

Cute little Cafe in the way to or from the Sequoia nat'l park. The food looked amazing but we only bought coffee. It did take a bit to get the macchiato's but the ambiance & loudness of all the staff made it worth the wait. I don't understand how this restaurant is flooded with good reviews. The only positive thing was that the waitresses were very friendly. The service was extremely slow. The food came out one by one and it took an hour to get the food. They told us they were out of fries 20 mins after ordering. My burger came out under done after specifically asking for it to have no pink and the chili was barely warm. They did take the burger back but it still came out with some pink in the middle. There were only a couple other tables of people at the restaurant and it was a Friday evening. I wouldn't recommend eating here but maybe it was an off day. read more

This is one of the closest lodging locations to the entrance to Kings Canyon NP. That, and the fact that it was clean are the two positives I can give it. Otherwise the rooms are very old and run down, extremely small and very noisy. The highway is literally right outside your door and traffic is 60 mph plus headed up the mountain. We had two twin beds that were actually cots (see pic attached). It should be $50 per night not $150. read more

Our family had a wonderful experience this evening at Gena's Restaurant. We sat on the patio, which was lovely, and enjoyed delicious food and the friendly atmosphere. The guys enjoyed the Wild West Cowboy burgers, and my daughter liked the Chicken Alfredo. The pot roast hit the spot for me (the half order was plenty), and the peach beer was tasty. The restaurant seemed to be a nice mix of locals and tourists. We had fun interactions with Gena as well as Chris and the restaurant dogs (Sven and River). Finding accommodations in this remote area is not easy, so for anyone touring Sequoia National Park and King's Canyon National Park will find the location in Dunlap perfect. Stopped by for lunch after completing a backpacking trip at Jennie Lakes Wilderness. My first reaction upon entering was "wow.. it's warm". This place does not have AC, only a bunch of fans going. So depending on where you're seated, you may be extremely warm. The bathrooms are even hotter than the dining area. Just be ready for this when coming in the summer. On to the food! It's pretty standard home cooking diner food. Most of our table got burgers and enjoyed them. FYI the fries that come with the burgers are steak fries. Our table also had an order of chicken fried steak which was super good! Crispy and doused in home made gravy. It also came with a home made soup (chicken noodle) that didn't have much flavor. Overall, fine place to grab some food on your way in or out of the park. Not the most comfortable depending on the weather. read more

The restaurant was kind of empty and locked even during business hours. But the Chilli Burger (Garden Burger version) and the Weekend Burger were delicious with free range condiment bar, so there is nothing much to complain about. Maybe a little more work on creating an inviting atmosphere for the restaurant would be great. read more

We stayed here one night before a multi-day backpacking trip in the Jennie Lakes Wilderness and King's Canyon National Park. For its proximity to King's Canyon and Sequoia National Parks it can't be beat without paying the higher prices for the lodges inside the parks themselves. This is a prototypical roadside inn, very much like those that I stayed in during family road trips across the US. You pull right up to the front door of your room. Check-in contactless - we received a text and an email from the motel on the day of arrival with the keypad code to our room and the instructions for the use of the AC and appliances in the room. The rooms here are very small. We booked a 3-person room, and the third person slept in a loft bed above the double bed. There's no rail on the loft bed, but if you're not in the habit of falling out of your bed at home then it shouldn't be a problem here either. The beds were comfortable and the sheets were clean. The bathroom was cramped with only a shower, and in our unit it wasn't draining very well. The bathroom amenities were very basic and for the life of me I couldn't rip open the shampoo pouches. The towels were clean, fresh, and large. The window air conditioning worked reasonably well but we still felt a little warm during our stay, as the temperature that day had been warmer than average. The in-room fridge/freezer was cold and larger than the typical mini-fridges found in most hotel rooms. There was also a microwave that we used to to heat up our breakfast burritos, which we had purchased from the restaurant the night before. These were big and pretty good. The atmosphere here is convivial. When we pulled up in the early evening, many guests were hanging out on the veranda drinking beer, listening to music, and striking up conversations. Doors were left open to allow the rooms to cool down, and the resident cats wandered in and out and sat on our beds. It was a really pleasant variation from the typical experience of hotel guests retreating behind locked doors without so much as saying hi to the people they pass in the halls. read more
