I became a regular at the Gendarmerie in 2010, the first time I lived in West Hollywood, when I lived about a half-mile away. I immediately became such a fan(atic) that I would forego other items in my budget in order to supplement my massage and facial allowance every month. I ate in more. I drank out less. Day old bread. Retread tires. You get the idea. I was a hardcore fan and my want quickly became a dire knead. Get it? Wink, wink. When I moved away in 2012, and was missing LA, half of that longing would be for a Gendarmerie visit. Unsurprisingly, when I would inevitably travel to Los Angeles from San Francisco on business, usually twice a month, I'd make an appointment immediately following my Sunday meetings. Disloyal to a fault, I made certain to rotate which practitioners I would see on every trip, perhaps making me uniquely qualified to comment on pretty much the entire staff here. Except not 'pretty much' - I've literally had services from everyone on the staff here. Here's the breakdown: Sean is their newest hire, although I understand he worked here back when they first opened, and missed it too much to stay away. For a relaxing massage, he's your man. I melted into the table, just felt like hot butter by the end of the two hours. Kendon, on the other hand, simply makes me so comfortable that I fall asleep during the massage. Which has literally happened to me zero times with any other therapist. Zero. I'm so relaxed that I start going cross-eyed like that little kid in the dentist video that went viral a little while back. Javier's massage technique works 100% of the stress out of my body every time. And I'm a guy that used to drive 7 hours for a meeting on a Sunday. I know about stress. Perfect balance between Swedish (relaxing) and Deep Tissue (therapeutic), that I've not experienced anywhere else. Goldilocks would've calmed her @$$ down and just enjoyed the first massage, that's what I'm saying. Not too hot, not too cold. Just... Perfectly balanced. Everardo's technical expertise second to none. It's 100% intuitive. You're thinking where you'd like him to go next, and he's there before you make the suggestion. I am so grateful for my experience here tonight. My girlfriend and I came here for facials, and it was such a pleasant experience. The prices are truly as written on their website and no one tried to upswell us anything. We felt pampered and rejuvenated afterwards, and both really appreciate the super thorough extractions as it's been a good long while since we last got facials. I've been going here for years, the services have not disappointed one bit since I started. I was just here on Saturday, April 20, 2019; got a way overdue sports massage. This time, my massage therapist was Tyreik, one of their newer staff, at the strong recommendation of a friend. Javier is normally my go-to guy, but I'm always willing to give new staff a shot. The "Gendarmerie Signature Massage" is what has brought me here 3x already, and that's just in 1 month. This is the real deal when it comes to massages. I live for deep tissue, but also want to be relaxed (hardcore shiatsu is not my thing)...but not TOO relaxed, the type of spa massage that puts you to sleep. Answer to my prayers: JUAN. What a magical place. Yesterday was my 29th birthday, so I decided to treat myself to my *first ever* massage. I've always been hesitant because I didn't know if I'd actually enjoy it or be able to relax. But hey, getting another year older makes you more adventurous. I sent a request for an appointment to The Gendarmerie due to its incredible reviews and convenient location. An hour later, the owner of the boutique and spa, Topper, called me and happily accommodated my request. When I arrived a little early, I had the option to relax in the steam room before my therapist was ready. Right on time, Kendon fetched me and made me feel comfortable, asked general questions to tailor the massage, and then delivered an hour of relaxing ecstasy! He could not have been more professional, skilled, and set the bar incredibly high for my first massage. However, I can't imagine going anywhere else now that I've been to The Gendarmerie. After a second quick steam, I headed to the desk to pay. When I arrived, there was a red velvet cupcake and a candle waiting for me! It was incredibly sweet, and they sang happy birthday to me. Aside from this, I had a facial done by Kendon as well, which went terrific! He took his time by exfoliating my skin and treated it with care. The theme of today.... "So that's what it's really supposed to be like. This is the best I've experienced in my entire life!" I started my journey to LA frumpy, grumpy and worn out. After all of my business was done, I wanted to click my heels three times and end up that the Emerald City for a Dorothy style make over. Okay so maybe it didn't go down that way but I did pick up the phone and call the Gendarmerie to make a few appointments. They were super accommodating and my experience started with a facial. First, I'd like to apologize for the nice receptionist who, while giving me the tour, I became distracted and went straight in for my facial instead of finishing the tour. You are so sweet. I appreciate you and I apologize. The facial was relaxing, comfortable and the best part of this facility... quiet! You can talk quietly but you don't get abrupt sounds from the outside like you do at other spas. Next, the massage. Juan gave me the massage of a lifetime. What made him more special? His understanding of anatomy, the muscle groups, their insertions, and origins. Yeah, I just got anatomy geeky on you. But that's important when you feel like a crumpled up piece of paper that someone needs to iron out. And believe me, there was a lot of tension between my shoulders that he had to iron out. So how good was he? I'd get on a plane and fly back to see him again. Yes, that good. Next, my hair. Joseph greeted me and made me feel right at home. He discussed what was going on, what needed to change, and not only gave me a stylish make over but one that was practical to my lifestyle and the amount of time that I realistically will spend on it. Being from out of town, he even gave me the color codes for in between maintenance until I return in August. He's not only talented but a huge sweetheart. Everyone at this facility made me feel right at home and like part of the family. If I lived in the area, I would be a regular too. Since I don't, I'll just be a regular when I make it back to town. Finding a good masseuse is soooo hard!! When i came upon this spa i was so happy because i knew that i had found my place. The massage therapists are all good and all have their specialties. Before I go into details about my experience at the Gendarmerie, I would like to say that this place is the spot where I want to be at all times. I fall in love with this place after my first visit. I am writing this review while I am on my flight to Hong Kong. I used my three-hour layover in LAX airport to visit the Gendarmerie. I did not mind at all the fact that I had to take a taxi for 45 minutes to get there. When I got there, I was greeted by the Gendarmerie owner, Topper, and served with a glass of delicious red wine. I had an amazing conversation with Topper about my flight from Austin to LA, my trip to the bay area the week before, and my future plans. After 30 minutes passed, I got a body scrub followed by a nice relaxing body massage. The massage I got was probably the best one I have ever received in a long time. My masseuse, Juan, is an expert at what he is doing. He adjusted his massage to fit my preferences. With a calming music playing in the background and a marvelous body massage, the fatigue I got from sitting on the plane was gone, and I felt so refresh and delightful. In fact, I have held off on the massage until I arrive in LA because I know that I cannot get the massage anywhere else like "the G," especially Juan's. Actually, right now I am about eight hours into my flight, and I still feel great. I am so glad I got the massage. In my perspective, the Gendarmerie is not a business but it is a community full of amazing people that happens to provide incredible services. I can spend the whole day at the place. Everybody is so nice and genuine; I have become friends with them right away during my first visit. The place feels like home to me. When I left the place to head back to the airport, I gave Topper a hug instead of a hand shake. I know that a business would feel lucky when customers continuously support them; however, with the Gendarmerie, I actually feel lucky that there is a place on earth like "the G." Great pedicure that's still holding up 2 weeks later! Wax / Grooming by Ever: My first time doing this. I was nervous but he was SO very kind and professional. He handled everything with obvious care and explained the process; he even advised on after-care. I'm totally going back for more; I'm afraid it may be addicting . Massage by Juan: This was suggested, NOT planned or requested. I don't do massages because as a 48 year-old guy I've only had 4 massages in my life and 1 was uncomfortable/awkward, 2 of them PHYSICALLY hurt me; I was sore afterwards, and the last 1 was over a year ago at a Day-Spa and it was "okay"; it was just okay. With all that said: JUAN has shown me "the light". WOW! A massage is truly personal I guess and Juan somehow found my level of comfort in regards to PRESSURE and SPEED. He so freakin nailed it! Nice, clean, and positive environment with a great sauna. Masseur was very good and was able to apply medium/high pressure which is hard to find for me. I would definitely recommend to others and come again. Even the girl at the front desk was very pleasant and accommodating. Everardo was my masseur. I like his technique and pressure he applies. I got the "Royal Treatment" facial from David and OH MY GOD! A facial massage never felt so good. He was also really thorough with extractions and microdermabrasion, and he helped me feed my parking meter when I was afraid it was running low. He's the best! It was my day off from work and I wanted to make it a spa day because it's been a while and I really needed it. After doing some research, I found this gem of a place and made an appointment to come in for David's Absolutely Fab Spa Day Package (Body Scrub, Massage, and Facial) plus a manicure. When I arrived I was greeted by Noel, such a sweetheart and a really nice guy! He made me feel so welcomed. Just the atmosphere when you walk in makes you feel right at home. I arrived 30 minutes early but David was ready for me. David was absolutely fabulous and the attention to details he gives you during the treatment was phenomenal! I didn't want it to end! I felt so relaxed and so refreshed afterwards it was like I was floating on a cloud. Following David's appointment was my first manicure ever and it was with Yolanda. She is such a sweetheart and a caring person. We had great conversations during my manicure along with lots of laughter too. She did a great job with my manicure. I am not overly careful about skin care so when my partner encouraged me to try a facial I searched for a place and came across Gendarmerie. Best decision (and selection) ever! Let me tell you, David had his work cut out for him getting my lackadaisical skin condition under control but he was literally amazing! He explained each process as he went through the steps and I left feeling like I was glowing. After the second treatment he had completely reduced wrinkles and smoothed out blotched color tones. The best part? He does this massage thing on my neck that just feels so relaxing! To say David is skilled is an understatement. I once had a facial done after bleaching my hair (which is a technical foul according to any hairstylist worth their salt) but David carefully maneuvered around the limitation and delivered his usual amazing results without affecting the bleach job in the slightest. Sadly my visit here was mediocre for the facial, but awful for the manicure. I read great reviews, kind greetings and wine when you enter, didn't have either of those. The facialist was kind and did a decent job. The manicurist, poor thing, did an awful job. My 5 years old would have done better, really, so sad. It was so slow and so bad ( nail polish uneven, on my skin on every nail, jagged edges of the nails) that i made up an excuse to leave before i had the pedicure. I've had acne most of my adult life and used accurate, retin-a and various products. With a regime of cleaning and treatment, it's under good control now but I sometimes have breakouts in my body. I went to see david for the first time, for a "back facial". Like a regular facial, it's steam, scrub, extraction, mask and peel (sorry if I'm getting the order wrong). David extracted 8 or so pimples and he was understanding, polite and professional. I had mini facial & Advanced Oxygen Skin Therapy with David. He made me feel as I had purchased a Groupon. Actually I've been treated better when I have. He didn't walk through any of the steps when he was applying them to me, no consultation. I don't really recall getting any extractions. When I was done with my facial it was goodbye I'll meet in the front desk. A mirror would have been appropriate to see what he actually did. My girlfriend had the complete opposite treatment. Her esthetician Everardo was excellent! I'm still paying for a service regardless of which package I purchased. The only good thing I can say is everyone else was really nice ..but that's about it. WOW love this place! This is my new favorite massage place/neighborhood spa. Today was my birthday so I treated myself to a facial and a massage. They are having an amazing deal right now where you can get a 50 min custom massage and facial for 160 - such an amazing deal. Plus this place is literally a block away from my house, and in the rain its as far as I wanted to treck. The ambiance of this spa is awesome - a bunch of faboo gay dudes sitting around the fire place and drinking lemon martinis and wine (all which are free and don't stop flowing by the way). I was greeted by the brassy New York-esque lady who knew me by name as soon as I stepped in - I met my facialist and he took me on a little tour and then back through the courtyard (which is also apparently the place to hang out and get drunk before and after treatments sans rain) - and then I went into the facial room to change. The facial: The music was soothing and his individualized treatment was awesome, informative, gentle and soothing. The extractions didn't hurt at all and my skin was glowing after. Plus I loved the dermatalogica products they used, nice. The massage: My facialist warned me that my massuer was the best, and the hardest and that his massages were notoriously very very strong. I was excited. Let me just say Juan gave me the best massage I have ever received in my life. I don;t even know to describe it - he found every sensitive spot on my body that needed extra attention without me even saying anything. I run and prob don;t stretch enough and he massaged, pressure pointed and stretched my muscles in ways i didn't know were possible. We had a quick introduction and then I sat down in his chair and pretty much watched magic unfold. As far as consultations go, the question I usually get is "What number do you want?" Joey asked me about pretty much everything from my general hair care to styling to my desired results. While listening to my responses, he would occasionally interject with his own thoughts about what would look good for my facial structure and hair type. He was extremely professional knowledgeable, and cheerful. His work is very meticulous; he practically obsessed over every detail of his work in cutting my hair. Needless to say, I am definitely the one reaping the benefits of his fantastic work. I never thought that I would be able to justify a haircut that was more than twenty dollars. What an incredible experience I just had at The Gendarmerie! Everyone there was so welcoming! My massage by Juan was by far the best massage I have ever had! Ever!! Kaamilya, who gave me the most thoughtful and detailed mani/pedi was super personable and flexible. I couldn't decide on a color and she couldn't have been more patient. My girlfriends and I went there yesterday for a bachelorette party and were immediately greeted by the warm, welcoming Nancy. Nancy immediately made us at home and offered cocktails. The lemon drop martini is a must when visiting Gendarmerie. The spa has an inviting, homey atmosphere. It's not like those corporate massage places that are all about the bottom line and looking to get you out of there as soon as your hour is up. One of the owners even introduced himself, welcomed us to hang out as long as we liked and have lunch and as many cocktails as we wished. We spent about an hour just enjoying our martinis in the garden patio after our treatments. One friend and I both got the Very Berry Scrub and massage package and when both of us walked out of the massage room, we were high from the endorphins released during the massage. Gabriel gave me an amazing massage; especially focusing on my aching neck. By the time he was finished, all my neck pain subsided. The Very Berry Scrub made my skin feel like butter. I highly recommend the expert hands of Gabriel. The treatment lasted an hour for only $99. The prices on everything were actually quite reasonable compared to other places, especially considering the quality of the services provided. The bride to be received a facial as well and her skin was absolutely glowing when she was finished. The owner also told us on weekend, Gendarmerie provides lunch and drinks all day for people to just come and hang out and enjoy whether you have an appointment or not.
