I would've given them a 5 Star if they had a dining room , but the picnic tables were a nice touch. I understand the old building burnt down years ago and now they just have pickup available. I've always heard how good they are and I never got a chance to try it when I came to town to visit my sister every few years. I made it a point to go here this time and came here on Thursday , my last day , for lunch before driving to the mountains. Everyone was very nice and the chopped pork sandwich was very good. I'm more used to pulled pork , but it was pretty much the same thing. The vinegar and red pepper bbq sauce was on point like it should be in the Carolinas. The slaw was okay and it also came with a pack of potato chips. It was nice and quiet sitting on the picnic benches and a few people came by while I was eating. I also got a show from one of the local birds flying high enjoying the wind. At first I thought it was a hawk , but after looking at the picture more closely it looks like a buzzard. Anyway , I highly recommend you giving them a try , support local businesses , and it was some good barbecue. read more

Very good food, first but definitely not last.. I ordered 2 meats with sides. Fried Chicken and BBQ pork. My 2 sides were Collards and butter beans. Everything was delicious. You just pull up the take your order and bring it right out. Little to no wait. Karen had the BBQ sandwich she said their sauce was a great addition. Came with coleslaw and chips. There may be a better country cooking buffet that features fried chicken and house made pork barbecue, but if there is I've yet to find it! The buffet is large, and always contains fried chicken and Eastern style pork barbecue. Other meats change from day to day, and might include Fried Whiting, Stewed Chicken, Meatloaf, Stewed Beef, Spaghetti, Ham, and more, even fried bacon rinds. The vegetable selection is also large with corn, lima beans, cabbage, mac & cheese, sweet potatoes, squash, greens, and a large salad bar. There are also a number of dessert choices each day, and on the day we were there they offered great fried corn bread. And the Sweet Tea is on point. The fried chicken and the pork BBQ are outstanding, and the fried whiting was fresh tasting and perfectly cooked. The Spaghetti sauce was very good, and was loaded with ground beef. The vegetables were nice, and very well seasoned. The cost for lunch with drink and tax was a little over $13 each, and while some will find this a bit pricey, the quality and variety justified the price for us. Laurinburg is about 110 miles from Greensboro, and while that might be a long haul just for a buffet lunch, throw in a visit to The Berry Patch in Ellerbe for ice cream and strawberries, and at other times of the year, a search for fresh peaches, and that'll work for us. read more

I return home once a year every October and General McArthur's is always on my "To Do" list. First of all, plenty of room for my family (usually an entourage of 14). We have to come here for buffet style so I can pig out on all the things I can't get in San Diego. The waitresses know my family (small town) so they usually leave a couple of pitchers of sweet tea on the table. Next, on to the buffet to load up all the standard fare: BBQ, fried chicken, chicken n' dumplings, biscuits, cornbread, fatback, and other southern staples that I don't eat such as collard greens, beans, etc. After this complete display of gluttony, if there's room: banana pudding, ice cream, and pies. Then, after a completely satisfactory meal, on to the front porch to digest. There may be other places that are better in some's opinion but to me The General is a Laurinburg staple and there is no way I would go home and not stop by. read more

Laurinburg has more than a few buffets to choose from, but only 1 serves genuine Carolina BBQ everyday, and that's General McArthur's. They are known for their BBQ and with good reason. We've gone a few times over the years and the food is always good. Fair warning: it's a Southern buffet, so that means fried and fatty. That's not to say it isn't delicious. When the have ribs, they are fantastic. Their fried chicken is spot on. They have enough veggies and sides, plus a salad bar to accompany the meats and fish they serve. Their sweet tea is just that, so I always get it half unsweet to even it out. Outside, General McArthur's looks like a cozy log cabin and the interior is filed with country kitsch. The staff are super nice, keep your drinks filled, and the buffet stocked. They close early, so make sure you arrive early. read more

MacArthur's is a great place to eat. The only thing is they close too early on the few days that they are open. We've missed out several times because we couldn't get there before closing. They need to at least change closing time to 9 pm.. We got there one night at 7:40 and they were closing. Said business was slow.. Closing time should be a set time. We were very disappointed cause it's one of my husband's favorite places to eat. They would get a four and a half rating if not for that. read more

Reading the reviews, my wife and I were really looking forward to our visit to General McArthurs. Walking over to the buffet, I wanted to try the fried chicken I had read about and picked out a thigh. I noticed these huge ribs close to the chicken and picked one of those. Dang, I couldn't wait to taste that thing. picked out some cabbage, looked for mashed potatoes and didn't see any. Got me some Mac-n-Cheese... Passed up the veggies as they weren't looking that good. Sat down and grabbed my huge rig and bit into it and it was hard as a brick. I could not even rip a piece off that bone. My wife got one also and bit into hers and it was just as tough and hard as mine. I ate the chicken thigh and it was just average. The only thing I ate that was good was the mac n cheese. Even the peach cobbler was below average. Absolutely nothing looked really good, except those unedible ribs. There were just my wife and I and we had 1 cola each. Our bill was $36.72 plus $5 tip = $41.72. That isn't affordable... Very, very disappointed. We have eaten at, The Main Table and Golden Corral in Laurinburg and love them both plus they were both less expensive. read more

Absolutely love this place. The food is really good. I love the barbecue and the fresh veggies. I also love the cobbler and always put ice cream on top. Every other Wednesday has great spaghetti on the buffet line. Even better than the food is the owner and staff. The General is simply a great person. Standard buffet, price doesn't really warrant food and selection. It's good food, don't get me wrong, and probably best thing in Laurinburg if you're looking for country food on a buffet. But there are MUCH better options within a 45 minute drive. read more
