"Ooh that's good," said my husband. He doesn't say that about many restaurants, especially not restaurants I pick to try. Its a little off the Hwy but the moment we pulled up and saw the packed parking lot, we knew it was a good choice. This is a great casual family-friendly pit stop when road-tripping. Prices are good too. Don't get the fries; they have a plethora of side options to choose from that are way better.

What Barbeque place do you know of that has its own 2300 foot turf runway ! Yes , people can actual fly in their airplane or helicopter and get some great Southern Barbeque or Fish . Stanton's has been in business for over 30 years and is a family tradition for many living in or near Bennettsville . The food is great and the service is down home . My favorite is the Pulled Pork Sandwiches with Cole Slaw on it and the buns are nice and warm . They make great Flounder and Hush Puppies too . They have a full menu of fish , shrimp , and other seafood , and also chicken , hamburgers , and desserts . Unfortunately since I live in Las Vegas , I only get to go to Stanton's when I come home to visit . I make it a point to go once since it is a family tradition . My mother would only eat Stanton's BBQ when I was growing up . We had another place in town called Revel's and we never thought their quality and taste was anywhere near Stanton's and of course they are no longer in business . I even made a video on YouTube of Stanton's with lots of pictures of the food and vintage planes and helicopters that came by to get some food , so check it out ! Also if you are in the area , find a place that sells Blenheim Ginger Ale and get the Hot one . They make a Mild and a Diet too , but the Hot is the special one .

I stopped by Stanton BBQ on my way home after church this past Sunday. I pass by so many times but I've never stopped in before today. I wanted fried chicken to go with the field peas I cooked earlier that day. I called and a nice young lady told me to stop by soon as they close at 2:30pm. I arrived just before 2pm. Stanton BBQ is located off Highway 79 between Gibson NC and Marlboro County. Looks like the business has been there well over 50 years. Truly a family restaurant. Passed down through the generations. Let's get to the food. I ordered take out. 4 pieces of chicken mixed. Breast, thigh and 2 legs. Side order was Mac and cheese with rice and gravy. Southern sweet tea. As I patiently waited for my order to be cooked. I noticed that many folks just walked in and found a place to sit. The dining area is really open and there's 2 sections to the eatery. The servers seemed pleasantly nice and carried on heartfelt conversations with their customers. It was like talking with family. This being a southern food establishment, I was looking forward to my meal. The Mac and cheese was really oily. It literally slid across my paper plate. My mom was laughing so hard. But it tasted like Mac and cheese. It didn't finish it though. The rice with gravy was tasty. The fried chicken needed seasoning for flavor. I was just a little disappointed but my mom's comment was on point. Next time, I'll just cook fried chicken at home. It just wasn't my style of food this go around.

This is that little slice of Americana that is the goal of all road trips. This is the holy grail that you hope to happen upon - the non-chain, small town restaurant with a specialty and a whole lotta charm. My husband and I were driving from Rockingham, NC back to Charleston and needed a spot for lunch. As we approached, the building itself was unassuming but the green airstrip and small planes set the stage for what turned out to be an epic countryside parking lot picnic. The inside was plain and comfortable and the service was friendly. We asked for takeout because we had our dogs in the car and it was pushing 100 degrees. Chopped pork BBQ with a vinegar sauce is their specialty (so we were told) so we settled on two plates. These came with two sides and hush puppies for $8.99. A sandwich was something silly like $2.99! They also offer a lot of seafood but it just kinda seemed like BBQ was the move here - ocean is not that close and I don't think the airstrip is for fresh flounder deliveries. Our to go order was happily packaged up and we sat in the parking lot, taking in the airstrip and the planes. The BBQ was excellent - in the drier side but flavorful with a moderate touch of pepper and heat. The yams were melty and so cinnamonny sweet that a string of syrup followed each bite. The slaw was finely chopped and included pickles. The beans were great - maybe flavored with sorghum? There were layers of flavor in their that I couldn't pick out. Hush puppies were average but served as nice little vessels to even out the heat of the meat. If this place isn't on the list of Carolina 'Q places to hit, I'm not sure why. Doesn't seem like the have garnered any of the press that they deserve - maybe that's the way they want it, keep it local and quiet and that way everyone feels like they found the treasure all on their own.

I remember when this used to be the Sanitary Cafe and Harry ran the place. He had a small display case with some of his old military stuff in it from when he was in World War 2. I was happy to see the stainless steel wall cover still there behind the counter. I met a friend of mine for lunch on my way to Myrtle Beach. We've been friends since 3rd Grade ! I had the Country Ham Plate with Mac-n-Cheese , Mashed Potatoes and Gravy , Roll , and Sweet Tea. He had the Patty Melt with Fries. I love getting Country Ham when I come home to visit because we can't get it in Las Vegas. It was good , but I have to say the portion was a little smaller than I expected. The Mashed Potatoes and Gravy was good , but the Mac-n-Cheese I didn't really care for. Sweet Tea was on point. My friend liked his Patty Melt and fries. He knew our waitress and she was nice enough to take a picture of us. Bennettsville is still the small town community that I remember and grew up in. I would love to see it grow again like many places have even though all the jobs moved away years ago when the factories moved overseas. My father and I walked the streets of Bennettsville everyday after he got off work and we visited many of the shopkeepers after his first heart attack to give him some exercise. He grew up in Bennettsville and never moved as many of the people that he grew up with. Bennettsville was a tight knit community then and I know the ones that I grew up with still have this place in their heart even being thousands of miles away like me.

Schuler's is a buffet style barbecue and all you can eat. Their pulled pork is their best meat. I wasn't really impressed with their ribs though. Don't get me wrong, the were pretty good but I certainly wasn't blown away. Their fried chicken is good but again not much different from most buffets in South Carolina. Their collards are nice and they do offer hash. If you're thinking corn beef hash, it's not that. It's a BBQ or liver hash and it's definitely an acquired taste. I usually put it over rice if I get it. Hash was highly popular in South Carolina for many years. It can't hurt to try it as Schuler's is actually pretty good. I would recommend Shuler's if you are in the area and look forward to trying other items the next time I return.

However there wasn't so we were able to walk right on in. There were some folks inside as well, and tables for us to sit. It's similar to most BBQ places where you order your meats by the pound. We had brisket, ribs and pulled pork. The ribs were so tender they fell off the bone. Literally just pulled the bone out. The flavors were outstanding. There was bbq sauce but truly wasn't needed, more just to enhance the flavors. The brisket was moist and tender. Seasoned to perfection. It as well needed nothing more. The pork was really good. Tender and juicy. We had a few sides but the most amazing one was the watermelon salad. With the mint, lime, cojita cheese, cucumbers, and red onions it was mind blowing. The way everything in the salad blended so well together was perfection. The Mac and cheese were just as top tier. The way the cheese pulled, the kick it had you could tell this was recipe that has been used for years. There was a bite to it and it was perfect. We also had the Mexican street corn that burst with so many flavors. And lastly we tried the hash brown casserole. It was definitely different but equally as delicious. The service was quick. The ladies that assisted us with our sides were the most friendliest. They encouraged us on the selection of sides, and shared their favorites with us. Overall one of the best BBQ I've had, definitely the best BBQ in NC.

After the restaurant opened at 11, we waited in line for probably another 45 minutes until we got inside to order. The brisket was great, but the best things we had were the kolaches (stuffed breakfast rolls available before they open), Cheerwine hot link sausage, and fruit crisp. The Cheerwine sausage was the biggest surprise. It had a great flavor and wasn't sweet - I've never had anything like it before. When we get a chance to go back, we'll probably skip the pulled pork and mac & cheese. They were fine but there's a lot to try and these weren't anything special.

We also got the cornbread and I'm not exaggerating when I say it was the BEST cornbread I've ever had. So soft and flavorful. The brisket sandwich was a little dry (could be because we went during closing) but still had really good flavor. The mac and cheese though... WOW. I am very picky with mac and cheese and most places miss the mark, but this tasted homemade. Easily a 10/10. My husband got the peach bourbon burger and said it was great. After driving 15 hours on March 21, 2026, my husband and I were genuinely excited to try this place and planned to take our food back to the hotel. Unfortunately, the experience started off poorly and never really recovered. First, parking is extremely limited out front, which is frustrating when you're tired and just want a quick pickup. Inside, things only got worse. The front-of-house staff was shockingly unprofessional. The employee helping us clearly didn't understand her job and had to be corrected multiple times by another staff member--something no customer should have to witness. It created confusion, delays, and zero confidence in our order. We paid about $50 for a sampler, which is not cheap, and yet the same employee argued about giving us the sides because she entered the order incorrectly. If another, more competent employee hadn't stepped in, I'm convinced it would have escalated further. Even then, we never received one of the four sides we paid for. To make matters worse, we were never asked if we wanted drinks to go, and we weren't given plates, silverware, or even BBQ sauce--basic essentials for a takeout order. That's just unacceptable. While waiting, we also watched this same employee tell three separate dine-in families to go sit and wait while she stood there rolling silverware. Completely rude and dismissive. If I had been one of those customers, I would have walked out. This is the first impression customers get, and it's a terrible reflection of how the place is run. Between the disorganization, poor communication, and outright unfriendly behavior, the service was a mess. The only reason this isn't a one-star review is because the food itself was actually very good. The burnt ends and ribs were the standout--absolutely delicious. But great BBQ can't fully make up for such a frustrating and poorly managed customer experience.
