It's a family run shop and the guys there know their customers and don't try to upsell them nor sell them junk. They take the customer and the customer's unique needs into consideration. Other businesses try to upsell. I have never gone to Town Fair for example and not been encouraged to buy four new tires over a flat. Bought my car there for a misfire. When I picked it up, it ran terribly, it shuttered and ran nothing like it did when I dropped it off.; They lied to me, saying the check engine light was on, which it was not. They said they checked the coil and wires and put a new spark plug in cylinder 1. They tried to say the car was shot, and cylinder 1 is not working. They charged me $160 for 1 spark plug. I had a second mechanic check it out, and it turns out the coil and spark plug wire were bad, which General Muffler said were fine, and they had tested that. I deserve to be refunded. They have a terrible mechanic JD and they lied to a long time customer. Ther place has gone way down hill . Dont go there they are dishonest and have a horrible mechanic read more

I used to be very fond of general muffler. A few days ago, I had the front tires on my truck rebalanced, and the tire technician damaged my wheel. I brought it to the owners attention, and he was willing to replace it until he found out how much the wheel costs. Then he offered to split the bill in half with me for a used one. I understand things happen but if it's your fault, it's your fault and you should pay for your mistake. So, as of now, they refuse to replace the wheel because of the cost. read more

On behalf of this review I will give the positive before the negative. I went in for an oil change for my vehicle while I was at the front desk I told the gentleman that my heater control valve was leaking to also take a look at it; if he could try to fix the leak first (obviously), option B if he couldn't fix the leak to change it out. I got my truck got back to my apartment the next day I walk out to check my oil. In the process I notice a new heater control valve, so obviously I wanted to make sure everything was good so I crank my truck as I was about to take a picture it starts leaking worse than the old one. So I call them up they tell me to bring it in and they take back to the garage the gentleman calls me up takes me back there and then basically says that they didn't put such part on there! Lol I said do you think that I would've made the bullshit up and that if the old one was leaking worse and y'all didn't mess with it I would've been calling you? Pretty much told me that I was a liar. Which me being mechanically inclined I know what I'm looking at know what I seen. Pretty shitty of a company to do something like that. I mean overall the oil change was good the costumer service when I brought my truck back was pretty shit basically calling me a liar. Won't go back that's for damn sure. The lady I met at the laundry mat wasn't kidding when she said this town was shitty. Southern hospitality here shit like this don't happen back home. I'm disappointed. read more

This is a family owned business. They've been around for decades. They know my family, extended and immediate. They are knowledgeable, very decent and professional mechanics. Whenever I've been in a jam they have been honest with me. To my knowledge they do not price gouge. I moved away for twenty years. When I moved back to Ansonia and told them my father passed it was like talking to an old friend. They have always worked with me financially when money was tight. Being that I am female, in case you hadn't realized, I have had my many misfortunes with auto mechanics. Yes, it must be true that they use pink slips for women and blue for men; and it doesn't help that I am gullible and trusting. But seriously, don't take advantage of me or I will stab you in the back.... I was the original owner of my 93 Toyota 4-runner (sparkly red, 4-wheel, manual transmission...ahhh, those where the days. Alas, the car has since gone to parts heaven...sigh). After moving to Connecticut in 1999, small things started to need repair. I used a shop in Berlin, where I lived for a couple of years, who were total morons. Because if your going to screw a woman, whom you think knows nothing, don't do it to one who is a friend of someone who took their family's cars there for years (needless to say, he lost all of our business). Anywho, I jumped around from mechanic to mechanic, never doubting once when any of them would tell me I need a 4 wheel alignment, costing $80.00, twice as much as a "regular" alignment. It wasn't until I walked into General Muffler, asking for my usual 4-wheel alignment, and the guy behind the counter gives me a blank stare, did I realize there is no such thing. This employee proceeded to explain to me, that basically, I had been robbed all those years. That the "regular" alignment, costing half as much, is all there is and all ANY car needs. Needless to say I have been a regular patron since. Also, it doesn't hurt that my boyfriend knows everyone there and they are all part of the local volunteer fire departments. But that aside, everyone I've ever talked to about General Muffler, young, old, male, female, walks away a satisfied customer. And another bonus, my honey has an Audi and they referred him directly to their Audi mechanic, saving us their middle-man fee!!! Kudos!!! read more

These guys are the best! We recently moved to New Haven, and went to a bunch of stinker mechanics before finding these guys. These guys are great on price, and explaining the repairs and problems in an easy-to-understand way. Most of all, this shop is super honest. I've spent a couple Saturday mornings there waiting for repairs to be done, and always hear 2-3 people coming in saying that they have been fleeced by some other shop and have been referred to here. As an example, we've been having a recurring problem with a misfiring piston. General Muff replaced one of the O2 sensors roughly a month ago. The problem came back, and they replaced the sensor free of charge. It's not fixed yet, but I know back in Maryland, where I'm from, I'd definitely be getting bent over a barrel. Wow this place is amazing. My car broke down on the side of the highway and this was the closest place to tow. Everyone working was so friendly and all were eager to assist with my car even though it was near the end of the day and I of course did not have an appointment. They even gave me a phone charger since my phone was dead. My car required towing from their facility and they allowed me to wait even after they were closing for the truck. I am so grateful for everything they did. I highly recommended anyone stuck in a bind or needing car assistance to come here! read more

I went in because my car needed to keep being jumped, What these people forgot (and I had the receipt for) was the battery they installed 11 months earlier.. $900 later, A rear brake job that did NOT include the brake pads!!! A neighbor works at a garage in Beacon Falls (I was unaware), He installed the rear brake pads, Told me nothing had been cleaned or greased as it should have been. And based on the amount of parts they used the bill should have been no more than $500. He also told me they installed two different brands of calipers, 1 steal, 1 cast aluminum. NEVER Again!!!! Lived in Ansonia years ago but still often recommend them to ppl for a quick oil change. Sent my teenage kid there first time alone. Noticed when he left an item in center console (which was closed) was missing. Very dismissive when asked manager and guy who worked on car. 100% the item was left in there and now missing. They did "look" around but they didn't really seem bothered. No cameras or anything to prove what may or may not have happened to item but it was new and highly popular and re-sellable. I don't like the feeling of feeling taken advantage of. Needless to say we will never go back. As everyone advises you should always keep valuables out of car. Lesson learned. read more

I have lived in Ansonia for five years now, and I wwas so so satisfied with this shops service, that I refer all of my friends there. I had taken my car to get an oil change at the tire center across the street, and they told me a tune up would cost $800. I took my car for an oil change at the Sunoco next door, and they told me my motor mounts were cracked and needed to be fixed...$1,000. Thank god I never got these services form these other shops. For the third oil change I went into General Muffler. I told them the last time I had an oil change next door they said my motor mounts were cracked and needed to be replaced. Lou (the older gentleman) looked at me and asked how old my car was, I told him it was a 2000, and he said" your cars old, they probably are cracked, but is your engine jumping around"? I told him no, that it wasn't, and he said "you'll know when there's a problem, there's nothing wrong with them". I have been searching for a good mechanic for years, and I am so glad that I found General Muffler. Anytime I bring my car in they take excellent care of me, and my car. They are honest and do excellent work and I would highly recommend anyone in the area to bring there car there for service. read more

STAY CLEAR OF THIS PLACE!!!!.........had a "quarter size" hole in my exhaust pipe which they soldered closed and a missing tail pipe support bracKet( part worth about $8) and they charged me $185 for 45 MINUTES WORTH OF WORK.... had them replace an 02 sensor WHICH I PROVIDED and the owner "Lou" copped an attitude with me when I questioned the why's.. BTW- Tracy, Derby.... you MUST be the owners' neice or something!! read more

I have been going to General Muffler for over 20yrs. I recommend them to everyone. They don't screw you. Very honest, reasonable pricing. I had a serious computer problem with my Ford Escape, they told me they weren't able to fix the truck it had to go thru Ford. So off to Healy ford I went. They told me it was going to cost over $4000 to fix my truck, for new computer, spark plugs wires and put all new fluid in. I called General Muffler back and they said Have them do the computer but the rest bring it back to us. Healey wanted to charge me over $1600 for the new spark plugs, wires and etc. Needless to say Healey Ford is no longer in existence. But General Muffler is. These guys are the best around. Returned on fourth occasions for original problem only now to have them now claim it's something else. Rude on the phone and in person. Father is more pleasant than the son, but not by much.
