Wow. I came here on my way to work in the evening and I was extremely disappointed with the food. I think it's because the last time I came here three years ago I had jury duty for a week and came twice during that stint and the food was great! I had the western burger and the pastrami burger on two separate occasions. They were both great and worth talking about. However, flash forward three years later and here we are now. First, I have to mention some positives because the place here is a typical roadside highway joint that delivers old fashioned comfort food. It's a staple in Shafter and one of the few places that opens late in this small town. They even advertise it on their receipts that they open until 11:00 PM. Also, they are usually pretty friendly and provide good service. However, good service can't save bad food. Man, I ordered the pastrami burger and I hate to say this, but it's probably the worst pastrami burger I have ever had. It used to be so good! The pastrami was dry and almost seemed burnt! It just had a weird color to it. Plus, it was beyond tough and gristly. Also, the burger patty was thin and very bland. The only good thing was the thousand island dressing as it was decent, but just couldn't save this sad, sad burger. I only ate it because I was starving, but it was definitely the most disappointing burger I have had in a while. Those who have read my reviews know that I'm a pastrami snob and this place's pastrami ranks as the worst I have had. The fries were good, however, but a little cold. Also, it took a while to get my food (15 minutes), and I expected to get it sooner. I ate the fries like that because I would be late to work, but had I more time, I would have sent them back. This place used to be a favorite of mine and now it seems that the new management is not doing things right when it comes to the food. The quality of the food here has gone downhill and the pastrami is just terrible. Hopefully, they change things around because this place is iconic in Shafter and provides good service. Their only saving graces are their service and perhaps their legacy. Other than that, this place is not recommended unless you want mediocre/borderline-terrible food. read more

I called to place an order and the male employee was extremely rude and impatient I asked him to hold on and he got frustrated and yelled on the phone "oh my God the burger no pickles" and kept saying stuff I cut him off and told him he was extremely rude and I would call to speak to someone else well I ended up going in person to order and while I was there it was obvious who yelled at me on the phone because the way he yelled out to customers for order numbers and his body language and facial gestures said it all he made rude comments to another customer , my burger was try because it was made wrong but they do have good food most of the time but today was not the vibe with that guy read more

Service was okay. Girls seemed unenthusiastic about serving the three times I've gone. First two trips I ordered a small Vanilla milkshake which good. Second time the milkshake was really thick that I needed a spoon to finish consuming it. The last time I went I tried the Biggie with the meal (double cheeseburger). Had Large fries. I hardly ever get back to Shafter since we moved to Bakersfield four years ago. A perennial favorite of all Shafterites is the local iconic restaurant Generals Headquarters (used to be Fosters Freeze owned by the amazing Wyman Stark. Prior to Wyman it was owned by the Lavertys. I am soooooo disappointed. This is a landmark in our little town and the staff is ruining it. We decided to grab an ice cream after church on Wednesday. This place doesn't close until 10 PM so we hurried over. There were several cars in the parking lot as well as a fam in the dining room. As soon as a truck and my car pulled to the lot, one of the girls hurried to turn off the open sighn. It was 9:25 PM. I asked what time they closed and one of the girls slammed the little order window and yelled CLOSED!!!. I tried to ask the hours but got CLOSED!! Yelled at me again. This is terrible customer service. The rudeness is totally uncalled for. I didn't need to be yelled at. If you are so miserable with your line of work it doesn't need to be taken out on the customer. According to my father, he has brought us here before, but I don't remember. The service was great and place was clean. Seating outside and a few booths inside. Good a/c. We came here on Monday evening and hungry for patty melts. We all got the patty melt combo, you can choose the type of bread, it has American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and mustard. They also ask if you want ranch or peppers. You get a 32 oz drink with the combo. Great drink selction. Diet Dr. Pepper, yes! Fries are the best. Crinkled, hot, crisp, and just enough seasoning salt. My order was taken by Tanya (according to the receipt) and she was very polite and patient as always. I think her great customer service was the best part of my experience this evening. I ordered a taquito combo and a pastrami sandwich. Taquitos were good, avocado sauce was okay. I opened my pastrami sandwich and was hesitant to bite into it. The meat was gray with very few pink spots and was pretty flavorless; think roast beef in terms of appearance and flavor. The bread was soggy on the inside and falling apart which meant the meat was falling out. Needless to say, I didn't finish it. The fries were tasty thanks to their saving grace, the seasoning salt. However, basically all my fries were undercooked, evidenced by their mushiness and the fact that they emulated oil sponges. I literally picked through them to find the ones good enough to eat, which were few and far between. I typically don't use the restroom here unless I absolutely need to. It is small and usually not too clean. When you try to wash your hands, you can end up with water all over your shirt if you're not careful. Water literally sprays out of the faucet instead of streaming out at a steady pace. I want to like this place, I really do. I have to say that the owner is a very nice man although I did not interact with him this evening as he was not there. However, I feel that it has slowly declined in quality over time (I have been coming here since about 2009). I think I will stick to Frosty King in Wasco when I want this kind of food. Not to mention, I had a pastrami sandwich from there the day before that was on the complete other end of the spectrum from the one I had from here.
