When I first got home from Italy I tried many local Barbers but kept looking until I found the right one. It's not just a haircut, it's a comedy lounge and psychologists office. Rick is my primary therapist and Gene backs him up with under the breath, high intellect humor. I've been going to Gene's BS for about 3 months now. This guy is the real deal. You have to understand I have a skin condition called psoriasis that affects the scalp area. So I'm always a little apprehensive about going to a new barber. I informed Gene of my skin condition, he was well informed about the nature of the condition and even offered some advice on keeping my hair at a perfect length that wouldn't reveal as much of the "troubled" area. I honestly couldn't ask for a more customer conscious barber that really takes a invested interest in his clientele. The price point is fair for the service he provides. I used to go to a barber in a city over that did probably about as good as he does, but the price point was 25 bucks and it took about 45 minutes to an hour to achieve what Gene accomplishes in...(wait for it)....15 minutes! Found the classic neighborhood barber shop I always wanted ! Went in for a beard trim and left exactly if not more than what I was hoping. Gene did an awesome job. We talked about how I wanted my beard and continued to talk throughout the whole process. He explained what was happening while he was trimming which was educating and as well as brought some peace of mind. I wanted a full looking sharp beard but needed some work done by a professional without removing overall length - I got just that. My son is 20 months old and he really needed a haircut. Looking online I decided I didn't want him to be super lined up with designs in his head AND I surely didn't want to go to a shop where the music playing or conversation would make me feel uncomfortable--there it was --Genes Barbershop! Perfect. I called ahead and spoke to Rick who reassured me that he was comfortable with my son being young. Totally professional and polite. I arrived at the shop and had to wait for maybe 15 minutes and it was a delight to observe the men there waiting. All were complete gentlemen and Rick and the other barber greeted every customer with a smile, a compliment, and by name. I didn't even have to tell Rick what kind of style I wanted for my baby. This review is for my son who had his first haircut at only 3 months old. It's a family tradition to see Rick at Gene's Barber Shop for the baby's first haircut, but usually that doesn't happen until they're at least a year old. I was a little skeptical to see how this would play out since my son was so young...I mean 3 months, he's just learning how to have some head control! As we sat waiting (not too long) I was admiring the work of all three barbers. You can just see that it wasn't like a Super Cuts or anything of that magnitude, because they really took their time with listening to what each person wanted and doing it right. I was shocked to see them finish off with a straight razor, but that's what finished off each haircut! When Rick called for my son's turn, he had a warm and pleasant smile that made me feel a lot more comfortable, especially being in a barber shop for the first time. My husband sat in the chair while our son sat on his knees, each with their own smock on. And YES, they had a cute little kids smock which was cute for photos:-) Rick was SOOOOOO good because he was quick, very gentle, patient, and cut our sons hair better than I imagined for a 3 month old's first haircut! Rick knew it was our son's first haircut, so during the haircut, he saved some hair for our son's keepsake. To finish off this already wonderful experience, Rick filled out a first haircut certificate that they have there for that special memory. We come from Tracy, and I think we'll have to come back for his next haircut because Rick was THAT good! I mean come on...if it's got the barber pole outside, then it's got to be pretty amazing, right?! I just left Gene's with my beard freshly trimmed; Gene's IS old school! I used to come here with my dad as a kid but now, as Gene points out, all in good fun, I don't have the need to get my haircut anymore. I usually have my wife trim my beard but I thought I'd make my return to Gene's and give him a shot. He definitely didn't disappoint! Gene even remembered me and my dad, just like he seemed to know everybody that came into the shop, greeting people by name and just very friendly. Most of my life, I've been getting those 8 dollar haircuts from those Asian shops. I left with a different haircut each time. They were consistently inconsistent. I will not subject myself to these mediocre haircuts anymore! I decided that I should spend a little more and get my hair cut exactly the way I ask. Due to the high reviews, I checked out Genes.I walk in to a warm greeting from Gene. Everyone who came in had appointments to see Gene. The other barber Rick called my name to his chair. I'm thinking "mannnn I wish Gene was cutting my hair. I mean, his name is on the door." My doubts were put to ease when Rick was done with my hair. He did exactly what I asked for and we shared lots of great stories. They have one other barber but he was on vacation. You know this place is old school awesome when they have that red, white, and blue barber pole. They also finish you off with a straight razor! They are really great people who cut hair very well. I definitely recommend checking these guys out. The shopping area that the barbershop is in is really run down. Don't let that fool you. I will be getting my haircuts here for quite some time now. This is a throwback to an earlier age. I used to go to the same barber for 11 years in central Virginia. I always got a predicable haircut in a setting Norman Rockwell would love. Gene's is a taste of ol' Virginia here on the western frontier. I walked in and found three bearded gentlemen behind the chairs and when I asked if I could get not only a haircut but a proper straight razor beard trim I was told absolutely. This place is great... if you want a military haircut... otherwise, don't make the mistake of thinking that you're going to get what you asked for. The first time I went there, my hair was down to the middle of my back. I asked them to take off a couple of inches to even it up, but they cut it back all the way to the middle of my neck. Gene and Rick are always glad you came, kind of like Cheers, but without the cold libations. I've been getting my hair cut by the owner Gene for the past three years and have always been satisfied. They are closed on Sundays and Wednesdays are by appointment only. They can get really busy, especially on Saturdays. Wait times can exceed an hour at times. I must say barber shops aren't for all men. You cannot get your tips waxed or your roots dyed, but you can get a tight fade with a baby butt smooth shave. I am a transplant from Portland and was hoping to find at the very least a decent shop. Gene's Barber Shop is as good if not better than Rudy's or Greg's in the northwest. Keep it up guys! Went here on a whim to get a cut while we were visiting the area. This place is OG, forsure. There were a few barbers working when I went in on a Saturday, I got cut by a burly old man named Rick that's been doing his thing for over 15 years. I asked for a low and tight pomp and after showing him a picture from a previous cut, Rick instantly knew what to do and needed no further instruction to give me the cut I wanted. He told me a little of the history of Gene's, it's impressive how long they've been grinding in the same shop! The cut was clean, simply done, and you can tell these guys are experienced and skilled. He also recommended some pomades and different products to use for different styles. Only hesitation, remember to bring cash! My hair is starting to grow out and was beginning to feather at the sides so it was time to find a classic men's barber shop close to home. Gene's totally delivered ... down to the striped pole out front, which is what I told my son indicates that this is a place for men to get a haircut. The kids barber he used to go to doesn't have one, and neither does mommies salon. Even though we were walk-ins, we were both up in chairs within 15 minutes and the cuts were performed with skill and speed. A barber on your first visit asks you a few questions, looks at your hair and delivers exactly what you wanted. I visited Gene for the first time this week (Wednesday's you can get an appointment) and this is a real barber shop not someplace with glitter and no substance. Gene did a great job in 20 minutes for $15.00 ( I am a young 62). So for $20 out the door in 20 minutes with hair that looks as god the days after the first cut what is not to like. My father-in-law recommended Gene's, and it was a great experience. I walked in and was immediately greeted by Gene, and there was only a short wait, on a mid-day Wednesday afternoon. Rick cut my hair, and paid close attention to my request just to trim it up, as I'm growing it out a little bit. I used to always get my hair cut at the standard chain salons like Supercuts and the like. However, after trying a couple of REAL barber shops in Seattle, I realized what I was missing out on. Back in Fremont for a short while, I searched up the well regarded barber shops and decided on Gene's since it is located right by where I used to work in high school. It was not busy when I arrived on Friday morning and I was seated right away by Rick. Rick carefully listened to my request for the cut and did a great job with the fade. Exactly what I wanted and probably one of the best cuts I have ever had. He took his time, and even shaved my back/side hairlines with a straight razor!
